Darling,
Many thanks for your letter to hand this morning, but why enclose the Xmas card Envelope. I am going to send it back in it. I conclude from the Post frank [deleted] mark [/deleted] that it was from Joan. The weather has been just fog here for the last 3 days but today it has cleared up and we have been up for 1 hr (over Skegness)
I have got to go to our plane (K is the letter) this afternoon & check over one or two little jobs. So I am snatching a few moments to get this off to you. A week tonight I hope to be on my way home. That will be good. I am afraid I shall have to have a day at Wyrley though darling as much as I don’t want to. I really don’t [sic] know what to do about the car? It is quite a problem. I feel that if I could get a good price, I would sell the damned thing
[page break]
By the way when are you going to answer my query Re- your allowance That is the allowance for you and the two boys. Independent of that [underlined] 17/6 [/underlined] Also the form that you have should be filled up by me I think
I am enclosing this newspaper cutting for your guidance.
Well beloved, heres [sic] all my love for Ever & Ever
Just yours
Ian

Many thanks for your [sic] letter this morning. I must say I dont [sic] like the news in it. & I am not taking it either I have been to see the Pardre [sic] tonight who seems to think I have a good chance of getting at least half of it back. He wants to know what your weekly allowane [sic] is (Total) & what commitments you have. I.E. Rent etc. The amount of any outstanding Bills [underlined] Dr & Colchester) [/underlined] etc. How much were we paying Carters for furniture was it 3/- or 3/6 week? Please let

me know immediately by return. In the mean time you might write to the War Service Grant Dept? or whatever it is asking why you should suffer this reduction as you still have the same expenses etc. just to see what they say.
Oh! And another thing I only received £4-16-0 for a months [sic] money so I have to go to Binbrook to see about that too
I am utterly and thoroughly disgusted with the whole Bloody Show.

He was [corrected] moaning [/corrected] like hell about his pay but within half an hour he was playing hell with the C.O because he could not get him any more operational flying. What can you do when chaps are as keen as that? Well dearest I hope I have not moaned too much but in any case Ill [sic] see you don’t loose [sic]

I bought another Pair of Pyjamas yesterday so if you get any coupons dont [sic] get any for me use the coupons on yourself & kids.
I will write to Bert over the weekend but I dont [sic] feel like writing to anyone at the moment, now How are the boys?

[Two words missing]
Many thanks for your letter today. The post seems all to cock because you should have had my letter by the time you wrote to me. I am sorry about that note but I hadnt [sic] heard a word from you and I had written twice as well as the Card from Lincoln.
I do wish you would not worry about flying. What flying I do is negligible & at the present Rate of things I shall not be doing any serious flying by this time next year.
The Squadron leader who was my skipper has today been posted and that means our crew are at a loose end again As I did not like the chap I am pleased but as far as flying is concerned it will mean more delays. Still if John got back to the original Skipper +/0 Stammers I shall be [corrected] quite [/corrected] happy as he is reckoned to [deleted] By [/deleted] be the best pilot on the Station
I bet poor Sqd [sic] [corrected] Rist [/corrected] felt Rotten when he went back let me have his address & I will write to him. You must occasionally see Mr Turner, because he has always been decent to you
Yester [missing] d [/missing]ay I received a letter from Rex who tells me that he has heard that the Lawyer has now died on us so that is going to delay things again. He was going to Wyrley this weekend I think anyway I can’t get away now I must try to get over there during my January leave. There is plenty of time for that though yet
Tomorrow is Pay day. & am already I am broke I dont [sic] know how much I have to come but I hope it is Plenty. Have you received that extra 17/6 yet?? If not let me know. I will send you that £1 too.
Well dearest I must close now but I am missing you like hell tonight

Dearest,
Thanks for the parcel & leter [sic] which I received yesterday (also the Wine). The delay was at this end & the Waaf [sic] officer who is in charge of the Roy’ [sic] [Royal] Mail Dept [Department] had gone on leave without appointing a deputy. She was recalled yesterday & hauled over the Coals. I contributed to the agony by reporting my delay etc.
Thanks again for the Pills wallet and Cig case not forgetting the onion too I am looking forward to my supper tonight. We are still quite busy here yet. I have not yet done any Cross Country flying may do a short trip tomorrow though. We are likely to pass near Delamaine on one of our trips but as I have
[page break]
The Sq [Squadron] /Leader for a pilot I doubt if I can get him to “Woble [sic] his wings” Still we will see what we can do when the time comes.
The weather here at the moment is mild here but mainly Misty which rather spoils local flying. The other chaps have come back off leave in the billet so things will be a bit more [corrected] cheerfull [/corrected] although they are not too cheerful as you may guess.
I was pleased to hear that the boys were OK & of course yourself. That Cold cure is really a preventative. It is “MIDGLEY’S ANTI-GRIPPE” sold by Taylors or Timothy Whites. Excellent stuff
Touching would [sic] my [indecipherable] is better so I shall not have to take any pills for a bit I hope. Well dearest I will close now
With all my love

My Dearest
Just another line or two to tell you that I am (O.K. but frozen. Every where [sic] & things around here is ice bound: we have had two days now. Tonight we are holding a dance & Cabaret in the mess as a sort of House warming party most of the fellows have invited girls up from Lincoln. I wish you were coming, it would then be quite enjoyable then.
I [smudged] was [/smudged] expecting a letter from you today. I hope my parcel of laundry arrives tomorrow or I shall miss the laundry here again. Have you seen any more of Bert? Dont [sic] forget to let me have his address will you. I will write him occasionally anyway. Last night I wrote to Rex. It is getting tim [sic][time] the estate was cleared up now, and in any case I would like to know what is going on & what is happening about the Garage Rent
[page break]
The boys in the billet have just been having short discussion on "Morals in war time" The Canadians have a very poor opinion of the morals of English women. (So have the Americans) It is fairly obvious that they (morals) have certainly gone to the dogs during the [corrected] war [/corrected] It will take a long [corrected] while [/corrected] after to get normal again.
Well darling I must close now with all my love for you & the Boys.
All yours
Always
Ian.

Dearest,
Just a line or two while I am waiting for a line from you. I have not heard since Friday. I was hoping for one today.
Well what do you think of his news now. I bet Pop is pleased. I hope we can keep it up now. Although if we get them out of Africa without opening up a second front It will release a lot of his Airforce to Bomb us, but that will be after they have recuperated their losses in Egypt which have been tremendous. Of course their powers of recuperation will be getting less & less now.
I am still as busy as hell now still I am enjoying the Course. It is the barrack life that is so upsetting I get awfully depressed if I stick around too much. I can understand Chaps continually going on the beer & getting hectic when They get away from their Camp, and those chaps going mad when they come off the Submarines.
By the way have you heard anything from Grandad? Did you write him about those coupons. Oh. would you send to Ipswich? or oblige me if you
[page break]
dont want to send from there as I have had a letter Again & I cant do anything myself for a fortnight anyway. Well I must close now & turn into my little narrow bed. so Good night darling. I wish I were actually saying that dont you?.

My Dearest,
I have just found out it is Friday. I had intended to write you for Saturday, but we are so busy here that I had no [corrected: was now] idea it was Friday already
Anyway thanks for your letters of this week. I still am fed up with this place. It is not the course that is worrying, it is the Bunkum & [deleted] B[indecipherable] [/deleted] silly regulations that one has to content [sic] with after working hours. However with luck I should be away in about a fortnight. Within five weeks of then [sic] I should be at home all being well. I should be able to tell you more definitely after I leave here. I should be able to let you know well in time for
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
you to get your hair set.
I went to the Camp flicks last night and saw “Dangerous Moonlight” It was quite good too Have you seen it? If not it is worth your while that is if you are lucky where it is being shown.
Today I heard from “Bing” (The Chap from Ellesmere port) who tells me they are working like very devil now. As busy as blazes. That is certainly a devil of a Unit for work. I am glad to be away from there any way [sic] By the way it should be getting time you hear “ from the Shetlands” If you have not: Let me have the address & Ill [sic] write them again.
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
How are the boys doing.
I must tell about the chap who sleeps oposite [sic] to me here. He has just come back from the middle east after 3 years. His wife is living with his sister, & they have a boy about 4 Any way [sic] when he came home the boy was asleep in his own room. However next morning the boy (David) came to get in his mummy’s [smudged] bed [/smudged] as usual He climbed up on to the bed, then turned and fled screaming “Auntie Auntie Quick, there’s a man in bed with Mummy”. Poor kid! & Poor Daddy!
Oh would you please take my brown shoes somewhere (Northwick?) and have them DYED BLACK. So that I can wear them with my R.A.F. clothes
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
I think that the heels are a bit worn, if they are would you get [underlined] Quarter [/underlined] Rubbers put on them please and then I can collect them when I come on leave. Well love I must close now as I want to write to Cranwell. I nearly [corrected] forgot [/corrected] too I dont [sic] know what to advise you about the ear I am afraid I dont [sic] know the details of the ear.
All my love [corrected: was loves] darling
Yours Ever [underlined] Ian [/underlined]

SHETLANDS 25-8-42
Dearest,
Tomorrow I expect you would get the letter that I wrote on Saturday telling you that I had arrived here. It is rather difficult to write a letter because there is so much that is VERBOTEN! Such as comments on the local weather & description of the camp & my work here etc. I can’t tell you much about the Island itself because I have not been
[page break]
[inserted][underlined] 2 [/underlined] [/inserted]
out of camp yet. However I hope to have a day at Lerwick before I leave.
The other chap & I are working like the devil to get our job finished as soon as possible so that we can get back to our own station but dont [sic] think we will be away before next Wednesday. However if you write put your name and address on the back in case of none [sic] delivery. I will wire you when I am about to leave then you will
[page break]
[inserted][underlined] 3 [/underlined] [/inserted]
know where to write to. By the way I should get your letters quicker than you would get mine. It is a two day post up to here.
How are the boys behaving now they are back. I suppose that they have told Grandad all about there [sic] adventures in the sea, on bykes [sic], & on Donkeys etc. I am anxious to know what they did on their last week. & what you did too. By the way how would to [sic] like a pair of “Fair Isle” gloves? I am not promising anything definite though yet.
[page break]
[inserted] [underlined] 4 [/underlined] [/inserted]
There was a funny [deleted] indect [/deleted] incedent [sic] this morning we get the Daily News broadcast at 8 AM over the camp loud speaker system. When it was switched on this morning there was a Record on playing “Home sweet home”.
Well dearest I must Ring off now & Roll into bed.
All my love to you & the Boys.
Yours Ian.

Dearest,
Many thanks for, your letter yesterday. I am cheesed off I want to come to see you but unfortunately I dar’nt [sic] take any-time off In case I have to go to Wyrley this month, & if I dont [sic] go to Wyrley this month I shall try to [corrected] get [/corrected] 48 hrs added on to my leave in August.
I have been to the flicks & seen a very good comedy called “Skylark”. Featuring Claudette Colbert & Ray Millan. etc [sic] I was quite amused. I thoroughly enjoyed it but coming back here made it

ten times worse. There is a chap in our billet though who is a damn sight more cheesed than me. He is a corporal clerk & is fed up to the teeth. His wife is expecting a baby soon & he has her parents living with her & Joe doesn’t get on with them at all & they will not leave.
So we have not got all the trouble With regard to [corrected] that [/corrected] Flight Engineers Course. It probable that it will be compulsory for all fitters soon to take the course because of the Ferrying of planes over the atlantic [sic] & they will want all the Available Fit F E s to go to operational units (stunts)( as you call em [sic] )
I hope that it turns out that Vee. is pregnant especially now she has had that “Mummy Sickness”. Old Bert will be disappointed if she is not too wont [sic] he

You know my Dear I do miss you all a lot. I feel I am missing such a lot of the kiddies growing up & quite a lot of their fun too. I am proud of my family you know.
Well love I must close now & make my bed & get into it.
OH! did I tell you that we had an invasion here the other night by Commandoes? Well there were 26 hospital cases 21 were commandoes & two others were R.A.F. to night [sic] Midnight we are having a Gas Attack. They do pick the times dont [sic] they

1st July 1942.
My Darling,
Many thanks for your letter this morning. I am pleased to hear that Hilda has a girl. They had not told me Auntie has not even notified [corrected] me [/corrected] as to whether she has received that £5-0-0 or not yet If you are writing you might ask her to let either you or me know. If she has not I must put in a claim to the P.O.
I am browned off. I am missing you & the boys & we are starting to get really busy again now. On top of that there are bags of overseas postings. My name came out of the hat (Thats [sic] how we work it here.) last, but I was just one too many so I got off that lot once more. There is going to be a big clearance over the water soon.
I dont [sic] know what to do about this Flight engineers Course. I would certainly not be abroad with that but I am afraid I shall soon be for the boat otherwise I dont [sic] fancy being a prisoner of war for 3 or 4 years any how. It is a bit of a bind altogether still we shall have to
[page break]
grin and bear it.
Dont [sic] bother about Pyjamas if aunt Jessie does not send any well Ill [sic] see if I can touch grandad for enough coupons for 1 suit any way I thought it was 12 coupons for 2PRS.
Well my love I must close now but I missing all awfully
All my love dearest

My Dearest
Just a line [smudged] or two [/smudged] to tell you that I am still OK. I half expected a letter from you today. Still I s’pect [sic] it will be here tomorrow. I have enquired about those coupons for Pygamas [sic], and find out that none are issued, except of course to officers. The only coupons available to men of the services are 3 a year for Handkerchiefs. / I think it is a lousy trick Why should they diffentiate [sic] between Officers & Men to that extent they are all in the job together.
Further they have sheets to sleep in & men dont [sic] get that priveledge [sic] & comfort.
What do you think of the state of things in [corrected] Egypt? [/corrected] after 3 years of war we still havent [sic] got a quarter of the staff we need to defend our selfs [sic] never mind attacks it is a disgusting state [deleted] ey [/deleted] of affairs. I am afraid that the
[page break]
type of gov’t [sic] we have in this country is doomed after the war for ever. Thank goodness. The Germans were quite right when they said we were decadent. We certainly seem to have lost that iniative [sic] and drive that used to see us through. The Govt will loose [sic] us an awful lot of lives & territory yet before they wake up [deleted] that [/deleted] to the fact that it is action & not speeches that is wanted
Well love I must close now but I am missing you badly again this time. Still it wont [sic] be long until I am over again so till then all my love

I have had a letter from Rex today in which [inserted] he says [/inserted] Grandad has written him a nasty letter telling him off about a lot of things also complaining that “we had taken a trunk of his Therefore I have written to Grandad saying that you will be writing to him when the trunk is returned to Wyrley. As far as “We know the trunk was dads [sic]”. I had to pack up in the middle of the last sentence last night & go out and finish a job off.
Oh! When I was coming to Manchester the other day I saw some Para troop Exercises. They were dropping them at Mobberley. They looked nice coming down with [corrected] their [/corrected] white parashoots [sic] I was away from here just at the right time, because the whole of the while I was away they were working like hell& no one had had a single night off the whole time. Things are not quite so bad as that now
Hurry up and write a nice letter because it will probably be two months before I see you again & I shall miss you lots of times in that period & the boys too.
Well I must be closing now I want to write to Rex, & to Worcester.
All my love
Yours
Ian

Dearest,
Just a line in haste to tell you that I have got this far. I arrived here last night after not too bad a journey that at first did not look too promising.
I am afraid Dad is very poorly & looks it. He has gone as thin as a couple of match sticks.
It is good to hear that Tony is getting better it is not like him to be poorly though

Cranwell,
2 [9 corrected: was 8] th April 1942.
Darling
Many thanks for your nice letter & also the Card. I hadnt [sic] forgotten the date but I did not realize that it was upon me.
Well old girl much water has Passed under the bridge during the last 5 years. Much of it has been troubled but we have had a good trip so far taking everything into consideration & we have shipped a couple of good little chaps as crew. If this Ruddy war had not come along we would have been so happy now. When you think of David as Mrs Jolly’s "Sausage" & how he used to pull the books out of the Book shelf at Watton & then look at him now he has progressed a lot too has he not.
Well I have applied for my leave from the 18th to 25th of May, because that is the first available date. If I leave
[page break]
it any later I may not get more in July and it is also rumoured that we shall be moving up to Carlisle on the 11th June, so around about that date all leave passes will be suspended.
I was on guard last night and it was bitterly cold so I am going to [deleted] work [/deleted] bed early tonight because I feel a bit dopey at present.
Have you written to Wyrley lately Dad says he has not heard from you and also wants to know if the furnitures [sic] OK etc. I think Rex is paying Mrs Ross. to look after them at least that Is what I can gather from Dads [sic] letter.
I have hardly had time to get down to that German book yet but It seems quite interesting Really. As to when I am going to get my dance pumps on I dont [sic] know. I tried them on the other night. They did seem long and narrow after service boots but they are quite comfy Really. In due course I suppose I shall bring my "Gym back to Norley un used [sic].

My Dear Kathleen,
Just a line in haste to let you know that I am alive. I am writing this in Rex’s Office I came down here last night to see Rex Re Dads estate. There have come one or to [sic] things up that we have had to get together about. I gave em [sic] a little shock by knocking them up at 3.30 this morning. I leave again at 2.35 this afternoon.
It is a difficult place to get to from Cranwell as Norley.
I have just been out to the station to inquire the times of trains & met Mr Lupton (from near Elmers) & he inquired as to the family & was surprised to hear I had two.
By the way we have just had a warning here. It was of short duration & nothing happened. A single Jerry came over here on Sunday and caught him napping not a shot was fired.
Well love I must close now with all my love to you & the Boys
Love Ian.
P.S. What was Tony like this time after my departure

My Darling,
Many Thanks for your letter to hand this morning. You are not half disappointed about my leave as I am There has not been a cloud in the sky since Friday morning I have never known such an [corrected] absolutely [/corrected] clear sky ever before. Apart from a slight breeze we have been having June temperatures. I dont [sic] know if you are getting similar weather there or not but it is milder day to be here & see weather like this when one has to work all hours God sends.
With regards to the furniture I would make enquiries to see if you can get the glass put in because if you can you might as well because they will have to pay. [deleted] as [/deleted] please yourself about the replacement but make them pay through the nose because they would not consider us when I was called up so they have not hesitated to help us [corrected] with [/corrected] the sale of the goods for default of payment etc [sic] Was the cashier the hand painted one? If not you must say it was! Also state that the lino was un laid I think there was about 12 square yards change then 3/- a square yard tell them that it cost 5/6 a sq [square] yrd [square], and was practically new as it was not used at Walton at all.
What do you think of the Budget hey! The poor old smoker is going to catch out
[page break]
you will have to cut it down a lot
I have not had [deleted] had [/deleted] a cig for several days now I am not smoking anywhere near as much as I was. I cant [sic] smoke at work see so I am always at work therefore- no smoke. That is why
It was my intention to come via Manchester, there are no through trains from Lincoln though. Newark is much better for connections really. If when I come I can get the bus for Newark in time I can be in M’chester [Manchester] by 5PM.
I am pleased to hear the boys are getting outside a lot you cant [sic] beat it. If I dont [sic] come round about the 28th April I shall leave it until May 3rd or something like that.
I dont [sic] know if I can sneak a week and in between [corrected] that [/corrected] time but I intend to try it.
Well my dear I am really missing you terribly now but we must grin and bear it I suppose only it makes one very bitter at times doesnt [sic] it?
Well all my love darling
I hope to see you soon
Big Hugs
Your
Ian.

West Camp R.A.F.,
[deleted] Camp [/deleted] Cranwell,
Lincs,
4th April, 1942.
My Dearest
Many thanks for your letter. Received this morning. I am pleased to hear you have the furniture at Norley. Although I am not a bit surprised about the Moths. As long as the Mirrors are alright we must be content. You must certainly write to Carters about the missing articles. It is certainly their Responsibility. They must send them along and defray all expenses too. The Railway will pay for all their damage. Get a [underlined] Cabinet Maker [/underlined] to Repair the goods & have a good job made of them.
I have also Received your letter sent to Kenley together with one sent there by Rex, He said he would try to get up there. I expect he is probably there now. I might write to him this week if I get the time. When we came here a corporal in our Billet said he had been here 9 months & not worked [corrected] overtime [/corrected] once. I have been here as many
[page break]
days & have had two nights off. I don't mind that a bit but I have the chance to get away tomorrow at diner [sic] time & I am stuck on [corrected] guard [/corrected]. Can you beat it? Still for all that I like it. There is loads of intresting [sic] work. It is a wonderful feeling when you have finished a major overhaul & the plane takes off O.K. but it is a still better feeling when it comes down again without all the bits falling off.
I think I told you that I had applied for leave for the [underlined] 10th [/underlined] well I have not yet heard anything to say that it will not be granted so if you don't hear anything to the Contrary you can expect me at Norley on Friday night. I would not bank on it [underlined] definitely [/underlined] (PLEASE NOTE THE CORRECT SPELLING OF
DEFINITELY. NOT [underlined] DEFINATE) [/underlined] I had thought of spending it all at Wyrley but I'll come to Norley [corrected] first [/corrected] anyway to give the furniture the Once over, and collect a few personal belongings. I shall see if I can get coupons of [sic] dad for a pair of flannels. I feel I would like to shed this uniform for a bit anyway. It gets a bit of a bind
always wearing the same clothes

Darling,
Many Thanks for your letter to hand this morning. I t seems ages since I heard from you last. I have not yet received any mail from Kenly yet. I also had a letter from Dad by the same post.
I am enjoying the work at this station alright but the food is not too good. Furthermore the comforts of Kenly rather spoiled me for the more primitive life here but never the less I am enjoying the change. There is heaps of entertainment organised
[page break]
here, if one has the money to go. However this last two nights I have been working late. Having moved northwards the tobacco problem has become acute once more. I am alright for a couple of days as I forsaw [sic] the state of affairs & procured 3 ounzes [sic] in London, but henceforth your kind assistance will be very welcome.
It is a pleasure to here [sic] that the furniture is on the move at last. As soon as you get it I can do with my bathers I dont [sic] know where the ones got to that I had at Newquay.
[corrected] I have [/corrected] applied for leave commencing 11th of April I dont [sic] know whether Ill [sic] get it or not yet so dont [sic] bank on it. I should know something deffinate [sic] next week, when I will let you know. I think I shall spend it
[page break]
at Grt [Great] Wyrley this time. With regards to the long weekends, I think I can get to Delarne[indecipherable] alright if I can get away from here early enough but it will be a matter of £.5. D mainly
What do you think? The whole unit is expected to move to Carlisle in May! That would be accessable [sic] to Norley but it is a lousy climate up there. Still there might be a good few plane trips to Sealand [sic] from there which would be a good lift on my way to Norley at weekend. I haven’t found out how far west they fly from here yet but I should think I could get a good lift anyway to Ringway would be a help!
[page break]
Well my dear that is about all for tonight except of course to tell you I love you & I am missing you awfully still.
All my love to all.
yours Always

My Darling,
Just a few lines in haste to inform you that I have changed my address. Surprised? I was! I was offered the chance on Monday & jumped at it.
This is an exceptionally large camp which may have its [sic] disadvantages, but it will also have quite a few advantages. At first glance it seems quite free and easy, but I am not taking that as granted yet.
I expect to work on Whitley bombers and will have no days off a week but get 72 hrs a month which will suit me better I think I can get home easier too from here.
As I have only been here
[page break]
a few hrs this evening yet I have not had time to find out much except that there is a nice swimming Pool (Indoors) here, and it looks good!! Also a [deleted] cinamera [/deleted] Cinema on the camp.
The camp is right in the wilds and is situated as near as I can make out 14-18 miles from Grantham & about 18 miles from Lincoln.
I have written to dad at Wyrley because didn’t know if you would still be there or not. I will write more as soon as I can find out things I am going to put in for 7 days [corrected] whether [/corrected] Ill [sic] get it or not is yet unknown
Well good night my love always
Yours
Ian.

25th Feb 1942
Darling,
Many thanks for your Sundays [sic] letter received to day. [sic] It is good to hear that are are [sic] reasonably well, but you did not mention anything about David and the specialist Yesterday was my day off but I was unable to get to St Albans, because I did not get away until noon. So instead I went to London, and had a spot of “Gangway” at the Palladium. You would have loved it the whole show was fine But! It is certainly Tommy Trinders show, The others were [underlined] all exceptionally good [/underlined] but he outshone the lot. Despite the war & everything there were some marvellous
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
dresses & scenes though perhaps the quality of the material used was not quite up to the old west end standard.
Tommy Trinder started it by explaining that George Clark had bought 1000 yards of lovely silk to dress the cast in but the government had commandeered the lot to make kit bags for “FANNYS” I am enclosing the programme. The boy that came with me had never seen a West End show before, he simply rolled.
We had tea at the Beaver Club (The Canadians over seas club). It was the smashingest [sic] meal I have had for some time There was Potatoes Mashed with Parsley, Lettuce, Chopped cabbage & Beetroot with tinned pork and for sweet I had baked egg custard and a large cup of coffee & [underlined] Cream [/underlined] all for the magnificent price of
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
½. In peace time a meal like that would have cost 2/- & would not have been served up any more [sic] daintily.
We did not have much time to have a big look round but, we went to the strand Regent st [sic] Oxford St & Piccadilly & the only damage now visible was where the Gas Light & Coke offices [deleted] of [/deleted] used to be opposite Drages. “ It aint [sic] there anymore” If get up to town again I shall have a look around St Pauls & Ludgate hill. There is a lot of Damage up there I believe. Oh! We went into St Martins in the Fields crypt. One Part of it is Shelters another is a W.U.S. canteen which was also very good.
I have not yet heard from Wyrley [deleted] yet [/deleted]. I hope they are keeping as well as possible. I must write for my watch to be sent from there.
[page break]
[inserted] 4 [/inserted]
Whilst Rumaging [sic] about in the Garage at our billet I found a Model Steam engine which I have [underlined] “borrowed” [/underlined] It is a bit old for D yet but his grandad can set it going for him [corrected] too [/corrected] show him how it works. It works with “Meth”. Also some [underlined] good [/underlined] toy wagons (Ry) & a Clockwork engine Chassy [sic] that is extremely good & powerful. May be his Grandad could build him an engine onto the Chassy [sic].
I am glad to hear that you have got Mr Lumer to get a prue [sic] for the furniture I would see if any other firm could give you a price by Road as well.
All the chaps who are on this embarkation stunt have been taken off work today & we have just got to stand by. I think it is a mad idea myself
[page break]
[inserted] 5 [/inserted]
because Chaps have been sent back by the dozen from embarkation centres because they are not ready for them and have nothing for them to do there.
Oh! I was thinking of Dad & you spend a holiday in London with me one February? When I was in Town yesterday I did wish you were there it would have been quite like old times Although I had a nice time I was missing you all the while. It is funny when ever I have a nice time like that it lingered with a feeling of incompleteness because I cant [sic] share it with you I wonder what it is that [deleted] that [/deleted] makes you so necessary to me? I never though I would ever miss [deleted] every [/deleted] anyone like I miss you darling? And as you say after 5 yrs [sic] of Legal partnership
[page break]
I remember reading somewhere some years ago that it was impossible to love a person to the same degree always, but the love either [corrected] diminished [/corrected] or increased as time [deleted] when [/deleted] went on. I can understand it now too. I had better close now my love before I get to [corrected] sloppy [/corrected]. I dont [sic] think I really could though somehow.
So heres [sic] all my love darling for you always.
Yours Ever
Ian.

Thanks for the letter, I am pleased to hear that you managed a lesson or two. I would not go to Wyrley with Eric though it might seem funny to them. If you write to Dad’s ask him to see Fred & [corrected] Exchange [/corrected] some coupons for some transport coupons which you can cash anywhere, you should obtain a (Form RMS 5) to send for some to the Regional controller & state that your Dad covers about 90 miles a week. The consumption of that Morris is about 33 M. PG.
I hope you can read this I am sunbathing on the Beach. I have finish my work for today
[page break]
so I have lopped it. It is not so hot today though. Yesterday I was here well after noon & am getting as brown as a berry. In fact my face is copper coloured now.
I am having a grand time now I work like hell in the morning & then I am free in the afternoons I wish you & the kids were here too though. I have had a swim although the atlantic [sic] is a bit too chilly for me yet. If it was not the fact that 99% of the people here were in uniform you would think it was the holiday period at its peak with the crowds on the Beach.
There are crowds of kids here umpteen schools have been evacuated from the London area
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
Also there are Mothers and women too so the place is generally [corrected] crowded [/corrected] out There is at the moment a crowd of convent kids [corrected] buzzing [/corrected] around! & I can hardly hear myself think.
This scribble is far worse than my than my usual I know but I cannot get in a really comfortable position for writing
By the way cant [sic] you get any more tobacco now? I was rather disappointed that there was none in with my pullover which is very nice & Thank you for the same XXX. Oh! I passed the maths exam of it all (only just) & what do you think I came out top in PSycological [sic] Test. Competing against Mas BSc & Dr Ph etc [sic] also top in the Antigas [sic] exam & if I had taken the Aircraft Recognition exams I would have had 100%. I liked [indecipherable] stuck I would have a choice well into
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
By the way. You have never mentioned my watch once?
Will you ask pop to have a look at that Pocket Watch in the Dressing table draw I think that it just needs fingers.
[corrected] Boy [/corrected] Jove you’d Larf [sic] I [corrected] have [/corrected] just had a bunch of Br [indecipherable] of any things park their blooming carcasses next to me here (From a finishing school). One has just informed the world at large that she must just simply finish orf [sic] a letter to her Grandpopah [sic]! Dear oh Dear! Isnt [sic] Laife [sic] in this awful place Vaile! [sic] Gor [sic] Blimey!!!
I had to pack up this noon I couldnt [sic] stick that crush
[page break]
[inserted] 5 [/inserted]
So when I was coming Back to the hotel I was collared by this Sargeant [sic] to check over some stores so could not finish this note off.
In a way it is a good thing because I may have some news in the morning as to whether I am likely to be moved soon or not so Ill [sic] tell you if I can do
