Sunday
Dearest,
What has happened this week? Only 1 letter!! Blimey. I thought it was me who didnt [sic] write. Well we cursing & surviving, and as busy as hell. Still there is only another 6 weeks of it at this pad at the most. (I hope). Well we won the wing cup for smartest crowd on Drill. The C.O. was very pleased considering some of us had only had 3 weeks training. As a result we were sent to Penzance yesterday to give a display & Parade. For two hrs [hours] during the Show it Simply poured down, but turned lovely afterwards. We had a Slap up feast afterwards, Boiled ham & pickles Bread and [underlined] Butter [/underlined] Cubes etc [sic] Tea
[page break]
Then at night the C.O. stood Drinks Round. On the whole we had a very pleasant day anyway it was a change of surroundings – Dinner Time
I am more than delighted to hear that David was improving & I [underlined] do [/underlined] hope he keeps it up. What annoys me is to see the folk around here who have lots of Brass doing nothing. Although it is not so bad here as at Torquay.
If only the training was a bit more leisurely I mean not more than 8 hrs a day & free wa[indecipherable] I would enjoy the life that is as much as one can enjoy barrack Life. I have never been so rushed around in all my life.
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
When I get my Scotch leave if I can give a scotch address I can get about 48 hrs extra so I shall try to fix it before I go [corrected: was got] otherwise I should only get about 5 days at home. Dont [sic] say anything to anyone though.
I really must write to dad today & answer his letter although God knows I do hate writing letters. I hope you can do pullover soon dear because these with sleeves are too warm now & yet you cannot discard them altogether yet.
Just before lunch I was over at the Naafi which is right on the edge of the cliff & we were watching the sea The most marvellous rollers coming in you ever saw. Just like the pictures of Tropical beaches you would love the lovely beaches here if only for the kids
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
It is a pity that I am not here under Happier Circs [sic] : ie [sic] working as a civilian in peace time & you and the kids were here.
By the way your remark about that [corrected] Photo [/corrected] & me being the tallest was correct there but here in this flight there are at least 8 who are taller than me
I am pleased to hear that a little progress has been made with the shelter.
Have you recieved my watch yet? & your Brooch?
I do think you could write more than once a week because when D was ill you could do it then. & have you got the Car Back yet
Love to all
Ian

Dearest
Just a line or two to let you know that I am still alive & kicking Thanks for the snaps. They are quite good arnt [sic] they. Have you heard from Wyrley. [sic] Regarding Baccy I have reached the stage when I don’t mind what it is but I prefer Ogdens Turret, Legation or Tom Long.
There is still no news of when I am likely to be posted so I am still in the store here. The Sergeant comes back next week so Ill [sic] possibly have a little more time off.
Oh! When you send a Registered [sic] letter or Parcel (If ever) do not send it so that it will arrive on a Saturday because I wont [sic] get it until Monday if you do.
I was lucky today I managed to get a ¼ lb of Chocolate for the Boys so I am sending some along.
Have you heard from Auntie Jessie lately?
[page break]
I have not heard again. Well I cant [sic] think of anything more to tell you dear now except I watched a convoy being Bombed the other night Nothing was hit though. The Drome was raided here the other night. 8 ground gunners were killed but no serious damage was done.
Well love to all
Yours ever
Ian.

Tuesday
Darling,
Many thanks for your nice letter received on Sunday. I have heard from Dad and he has fixed up the car O.K. He said he was [corrected] writing [/corrected] you by the same post so I expect you have heard now.
There were several things that I was going to write to you about but I have forgotten them now. Yesterday was my day off so I went into Purley to the “Flicks” I did not bother to look what was on but was annoyed to see when I got in it was “It began with Eve”, but do you know think I enjoyed it even better than at Chester. I was able to study Charles Laughton more & I got more of the jokes.
I have my day off next week on Wednesday. If Jean manage it I shall go to see Vee & Bert. It all depends what time
[page break]
I get off and on the weather. At the moment we are Snowed up and frozen up. Quite artic conditions.
Up to the present I have done very little work on airplanes, except dig the buggers out of snow drifts. This is a very nice station but has a lousy C.O. Even his officers detest him As the Echelons are dispersed all over the drome [aerodrome] a Naafi Van comes round in the morning with tea & buns which are most acceptable Today. Just as the Van came over to us, he drove up and sent it away & said that we were far too busy to stop for tea. The men were to get back to [corrected] their [/corrected] work which was shovelling frozen snow off the dromes [sic] & there was about 10% of frost at the time to [sic]. In consequence when he had gone all the men packed up & there was nothing more done today. He is the sort of Divine that will get bumped off quick if he ever goes overseas. Fortunately or unfortunately? I was not there at the time. I have been doing station defence etc [sic] for a couple of days we all have a turn at this
[page break]

and are known as backers up.
The actual work on engines is much simpler than we had at Hednesford but at the same time the Responsibility is greater because successful flying & fighting depends absolutely upon it.
[corrected] I [/corrected] was wondering if I am here doing enough if you could meet me in London on a 48 hr pass? & perhaps your Mother could look after the pair for that long if you ask her nicely.
Well I must go to French class now so tell after that. Oh! Yes! [underlined] Recevoir [/underlined] means = To RECEIVE” “RECU” is Received Voice! “j’ai recu votre letter”.

What is the great interest these days? Your letters seem scrappy & written in a hurry.
I had a shock on Friday night when I found out it was so near the 12th, & I had not written to Tony or sent him anything. It is more or less impossible for me to send him anything because I just cant [sic] get nothing here abouts
Last night we had
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
A rush job on & I was working until 2 A.M. & was dog tired this morning. Tonight I have finished early so I am going to look in the dance for an hour later.
Have you heard from Cheslyn Hay yet? I have not so far I dont [sic] expect to now but I am buggered if I am going to write and ask em [sic] now. Further more if the £5. Has gone astray I shall pay it out again.
How is Vera getting on have you seen anything of her yet? let me know wont [sic] you? That chap Hinchmoor from Ellesmere Port has gone on 72 hrs this week & he is going to make arrangements for his wife to go into hospital I think too. He is a very nice chap & he & his wife do want children.
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
I am sending that P.O. to Ipswich tonight so that will be a bit more off the National [corrected] Debt [/corrected] By the way how are you getting on with your Commitments have you sent anymore to Taylors at Walton yet?
Well love I have no news for you tonight except a bit of stale news. I still love you dearest strange as it seems & despite all the worries you cause me you are just about worth it. Aint [sic] you?
Good night my love
Yours Ever
Ian.

My Dearest,
I have received your letter today. I cant [sic] understand why you have not received my note. I wrote you on Monday Last It was posted on Tuesday Morning so you should have had it on Wednesday at the latest. You need not worry about this place getting bombed. Our own pilots cant [sic] find it at night So I am damned [corrected] sure [/corrected] that Gerry cant [sic] find it
If I dont [sic] hear anything from Rex I think I shall go to Wyrley some [corrected] time [/corrected]
[page break]
This month because I dont [sic] want to muck my leave up in August. I am trying to get it postponed till then although there is a great Possibility of the unit being moved at that time though.
I wonder what William wants the boys [sic] full names and ages for. I wonder if he is going to buy them some certificates or something?
Well Darling the light has faded now & I cant [sic] see where I should be writing so Ill [sic] finish this in the morning. Good Night Dearest
[underlined] Saturday [/underlined]
Well last night just as I had finished the last word the [corrected] sirens [/corrected] went. There was a mock invasion on & we had to turn out until 3.30AM & man trenches. Apparently we have to do that for 3 nights Last night we were attacked by Commandos & they soon Captured the Camp,
[page break]
It’s Paratroops [sic] or Homeguard [sic] tonight. [corrected] Probably [/corrected] the latter & the Paras on Sunday.
One night is not as bad but 3 on the run and carrying on with normal work as well is too much. Last night it was 10.o clock when we finished & then had that job.
I dont [sic] know whether other units of the R.A.F. & army working like we are but we are certainly busy.
Well my dear I must close & get this away to the post & get back to work. I have just sneaked up to finish this off
All my love to you dearest for now
Yours Ian

Pardoney [sic] moi mais j’ai [sic] been to une Class francais ce soir.
Well what [corrected] do [/corrected] you think the wire was that I worried about all last night? Well if you will look at the enclosed you will see and that accounts for a phase in your letter that I could not understand. Apparently it [corrected] had [/corrected] reached the Warrington area. So I am sending this letter to the same address IE [corrected] addressing [/corrected] it exactly the same, to see what happens. If you get this OK enclose the Enollope [sic] (& the telegram?) in a letter to the Post master because I want my 9d back. I phoned the wire and the girl repeated it correctly
I addressed it to Stevens to avoid any possible mistake because there is or was another Wynn somewhere about there
[page break]
I have not yet heard from Wyrley & have you written to Aunt Jessie yet?
I will do so sometime over the week end Well my love I must close now with all love to you & the “Lads” & hope that you soon OK again

My Dearest
I bet you have been wondering what has been happening this last week. Well I dont [sic] quite know myself yet. I have been to 5 stations in 4 days so you can guess I am fed up with it all.
However I have been crewed up this morning & the Skipper of our crew is the Flight Commander. Flying Officer [underlined] Stammers [/underlined] (no relation to Frank) All the crew that I have met yet seem very nice blokes. In fact all the Squadron are good chaps
Of course I cant [sic] give you any written details of anything but I think it will be extremely interesting here when we get settled in.
Still I hope to be seeing you on Tuesday so I will tell you all about it then.
All my love
Yours Ian.

Good Friday.
My Darling,
Many thanks for your letter Received this morning. Time has gone so quickly since I came back, that I had no idea it was Friday today. Although I have not done any ops. I have been Airborne quite a lot. I have been to Northholt London (I think Ken Jones is there) & to Exeter & Warmwell and quite busy with Station duties. I am expecting to go for my interview for my commission any time now. It should have been on the 20th but the A.O.C. was away.
I was afraid of [corrected] David [/corrected] getting that cold. although I dont [sic] think it was the “move” that did it. It was running around in the garden without

a Jacket.
[underlined]I am [/underlined] fearfully fed up dearest. I shall be mighty pleased when this lot is over.
[underlined] I am [/underlined] glad you enjoyed your [corrected] day [/corrected] & M/C School too.
It was almost like old times. Never mind there are more to come.

Cranwell,

Dearest
Many thanks for your letter which was most warmly received this morning. I cant [sic] understand how it is you have not received my letter though? because there is still one that you have not yet apparently received.
I am in a state of acute browned offed-ness. Today it has been decreed that no one can get away on pass or leave before 4.30. In that case it means that I shall not get home before 8 am on the following morning. Well that is not so bad on 7 days but it is going to
[page break]
[inserted] 2 [/inserted]
shorten a 72 hrs down some what [sic]
It is funny every where[sic] I go I seem to land there just at the time when they decide to put the screw on. There will be bloody Revolution when this war is over I can tell you. Some of the upstarts who at present hold the authority are in for a very severe kick in the pants, and it wont [sic] be with gym shoes either
All the Decent chaps, like old Beamish seem to get bumped off it is the Binders who have not the guts to go into action themselves but like to be stink makers & have a crowd of underdogs [corrected] kowtowing [/corrected] to them, and take a sadistic delight in using [corrected] their [/corrected] present authority
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
to vent their spleen on all in their power. Such authority & such power could not & would not be tolerated under normal conditions. It is of such muck as this that Fascists are made The only thing that one can attribute it to is [corrected] narrow [/corrected] minded ignorant vanity, or an inferiorety [sic] complex given a dictatorship. It is such bunkum as this that makes any one keener to get on with the war & impatient for its end, if only just to be able to tell them where they get off. I am afraid that things have altered very little in the last twenty odd years of peace as regards that sort of thing. If this war was a commercial proposition, I am afraid there would be a good many changes
[page break]
[inserted] 4 [/inserted]
in its administration. This is far from being a happy camp at the moment, and will remain so until the administration learn that the men appreciate a little encouragement for their efforts. There comes a limet [sic] even in the Air force to being driven
Anyway that is about enough bind. Unless you hear anything to the Contrary from me expect me some time on the [underlined] 19th [/underlined], as I am afraid I cant [sic] make it now on the 18th with this new stunt. Oh! I forgot though I am calling at Wyrley first so it wont [sic] effect you so much. Ill [sic] write you from there of course let you know when to expect me, and perhaps we can arrange for you to ring me up. Still I shall be writing you again before then.
[page break]
[underlined] [smudged] 5 [/underlined] [/smudged]
I didnt [sic] hear Winstons [sic] speech because I was on guard, but I read it in the paper the next day. It was typicually [sic] Wintsonian [sic]. A lot of sarcastic blarney with out [sic] telling much. However we cannot expect to hear much yet in any case, but I suppose he had to make a speech to bring himself into the public mind again. It is [deleted] def [/deleted]
devilishly difficult for him, because the public are more or less continuously expecting him to perform and pronounce miracles, instead of realizing that we are not yet properly organised [deleted] and [/deleted] despite everything [deleted] whe [/deleted] we are not yet in our stride with production & reserves of supplies that must necessaryly [sic] be available before we dare move a finger & furthermore the public do not seem to realize how serious is the
[page break]
[inserted] 6 [/inserted]
shipping situation & that is of paromount [sic] importance to the whole war effort.
I am sorry if I am being somewhat political tonight but I just cant [sic] help it I feel like a good argument somehow.
I have just been to "supper". Cold greasy sausage & a mug of cold stewed tea. not forgetting a chunk of stale brown Bread crust. Really it is disgusting The food at this camp is terrible. Honestly it is the worst I have struck yet. The dining rooms are never properly cleaned & sometimes the tables are like pig troughs with slopped tea & porridge all over the place. Of course that is largely due to the men themselves but it is engendered cheifly [sic] through the method of serving. Imagine
[page break]
[underlined] 7 [/underlined]
what it is like standing in a queue first off [sic] all one collects a plate of porridge (usually the best part of the meal), then a Plate of what ever [sic] else is going. Inveariably [sic] some minced up & indiscribable [sic] mess, slopped all over with some oily greasy solution misnamed gravy. From there you procceed [sic] a little further & collect a Round of Brown Bread & a Hunk of marg' & Butter mixture Still struggling & Balancing precariously the grub you have aquired [sic] you advance stratigically [sic] upon the tea urn & draw off a pint of murky leather rotting liquid. This much ackomplished [sic] the next item is to find a seat at a table. Fortunately there is quite a [deleted] few [/deleted] [inserted] number of tables [/inserted], but all are more or less populated so with one Eye on the fellows already seated & the the [sic] others on the grub lest it should fall down the afforsaid [sic] fellows necks you feel gently with one foot for the Bench having found it you must make up your mind to do one of two things. One. to do as nerveRacking [sic] tight Rope-[corrected] cum [/corrected]-trapese [sic] and balancing act or shut your eyes - Flop down & hope [self-corrected] for [/self-corrected] the best. Whichever you do you are bound to spill something, & so you hope it is the [corrected] table [/corrected]
[page break]
[inserted] 8 [/inserted]
that gets it, and not a fellow "erk". Espeaslly [sic] if he happens to be bigger than you.
Well I feel better for discribing [sic] that as long as we can see the funny side of things we can tolerate them[?] but I am damned if I can see the funny side of working all hours as God sends without a break & then getting your passes curtailed or Rather in this case beheaded. That is just mean, and that [corrected] type [/corrected] of meanness isnt [sic] funy [sic], It is criminal
I am glad you have written to Dad again because I am sure that he feels he is nearing the end of things & it behoves us to make what little time he has left [corrected] as [/corrected] pleasant as possible. This of course cannot be done, but with out [sic] some considerable discomfort & inconvenience to [corrected] ourselves [/corrected] but such selfishness should not stand in our way. Dad has had is [sic] faults which God knows have been many. However he has always been a Generous father to me if not a wise one. He has frequently assisted us to his own cost & I cant [sic] forget that. Even though I get annoyed at much that he does now.
[page break]
[underlined] 9 [/underlined]
That is why I dont [sic] want to cause any trouble afer [sic] R & R. I may be a fool I know but I would rather be a good [corrected] hearted [/corrected] fool [deleted] & then [/deleted] a mean natured twerp, but in any case what I would be & what I wouldnt [sic] isnt [sic] altered by [indecipherable one word] fact that [deleted] one [/deleted] I cant [sic] go belyond [sic] my nature so to speak.
Blimey! [deleted] I [/deleted] aint I writing somfink [sic]??
Gosh darling, Do you ever think of what we will do after the war? I want to go some where [sic] on a holiday with you alone. not even the two dear little chaps with us. Just you and I. Say in the Lakes, or in Wales & then finish up with a few nights in London. Just like in our Old days of palmy [sic] peace. hey? Something combining the best of all the holidays we ever had together In the mean time however (I seem to have written however a lot) I am making no plans. Lets get the blasted war over, & then get down to planing [sic]. We shall have our past mistakes to guide us for the future & God grant us the wisdom to learn
[page break]
[inserted]10[/inserted]
well by them.
Think of it Dear I am 34 years old but I still feel as irrespinsible [sic] as when I was 16 yrs. I am still a boy at heart for which I am duly thankfull [sic] I should hate to be unable to join in the spirit of my lads pranks when they get older. Even if I must sometimes appear to be the Rightious [sic] - never-to be-disobeyed-father at times. I only hope I can be as [corrected] generous [/corrected] hearted to them as my parents have been to me and as tolerant.
Well my beloved I must close now with all [corrected] my [/corrected] love because it is so damned cold tonight and there is no such a luxury as a fire in the [corrected] billet [/corrected] & my little reenforced [sic] concrete bed is warmer if not more comfortable than this pew so good night dearest. Just grin & bear it till we meet once more. We have all got to do it
All my love
Ever Your
Ian

liked the pilot of the other crew immensely: I am not over enthusiastic about this change yet although it means that we get an easier time and we more or less able to pick our own trips.
Well love I am afraid I cant [sic] tell you much now as I am still in the very browned off stage which always occurs after leave, & of course I am missing you o’ nights.

Dearest
Many thanks for your letters. I have not Received the parcel though. If you have sent it I may get it on Monday night. Has Pop done my watch yet? By this time you should be having your lessons with Arthur. If the weather up there is similar to this it will be grand. Yesterday was a scorcher. I spent all the morning on the beach with a book (I had to work in the afternoon though)
Well whether I have passed my exam or not I am off the course now & have re mustered as an Aero Engine Fitter so will in due course be getting transferred. I hope to Cannock. It may be Blackpool though. That would not be so bad either. Still I may be my luck to be sent to Scotland or some God forsaken spot off the map altogether. I cant [sic] say how long it will be before I go. It may be next week or it may be a month

The Reason I re mustered as an Aero Engineer Fitter is because it is the best pay.
My Ear was the [corrected] cause [/corrected] of this re mustering I had another Medical Exam on Friday and they spotted it then the M.O. here is very thorough. He wanted to know how they had missed it at Polegate.
I have signed the Prop’l [sic] Form & am posting it today. Let me know how much they want before you remit the cash, and By the way did Spann sign that Certificate?
I received a letter from Dad yesterday too. he enclosed a couple of Stamps and 2/6 PO from Grandad.
He was quite perturbed our David so let him know how the “Wikka Chap” is getting on.
I must really close now dear because I am doing Guard duty today & it is almost my turn to go on.
Love to all
Yours ever
Ian.
