Dearest,
Many thanks for your note received yesterday.
I am afraid even before I start I have not much to tell you in this letter darling. Still I'll send it along if it is only a couple of lines.
Nothing of interest has really happened here lately. I had the first exam in Engineering Science yesterday & Have [sic] just learned that I did quite well. 76%. Which is a class A pass.
If I could maintain that standard throughout the course I could probably get a Commission
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
Quite [sic] easily. However I am afraid that was only a flash in the pan. Or that I shall certainly find that portion of the course particularly interesting. The whole of the course is extremely interesting. It is astonishing the amount of work and calculation involved in planning a trip say for a raid, apart from the non technical organisation. For instance the varying speeds for certain distances all have to be worked out & altitudes in order to see how much petrol will be needed to get you back home & How [sic] many bombs or

or if you are on Anti Submarine patrol Depth Charges can be carried [underlined] etc [/underlined]
[underlined] I am [/underlined] pleased to say that the food here is much better than we had at Cranwell but the Ques [sic] here are worse than any where [sic] I have been every where [sic] is terribly overcrowded, & Everyone [sic] stays about the camp during the week because it is Rather [sic] awkward to get away from & Back [sic] to.
I am pleased to here [sic] that Vera is better & I shall write her tomorrow.
You know David

Aught [sic] to go to School as soon as possible now, so that he can get used to a bit of discipline before he gets too unruly altogether.
Well my love I have covered a page or two and dont [sic] seem to have said anything & yet my source of news is dry.
So by sending all my love on paper I'll Conclude [sic]
All yours
Ian

My Darling,
Just a line in haste to let you know that I have received your letters OK, (but I am [underlined] urgently [/underlined] in need of [underlined] pygamas [sic] [/underlined]) You should have had mine before Friday anyway. You remember that last parcel I sent to you? Well I have a similar one to come at any time now. Ill [sic] send it with my Dirty Pygamas [sic] So hurry up with my clean ones please because these are awful.
Well dearest I have not operated since we have been here yet but at the same time have not been out much to have a look round. I will let you have the full details as soon as I can get organised.
[page break]

Oh! I am glad you mentioned those pyjamas. I would be glad if you would send them as soon as possible
Well beloved I must close now with all my love.
Always yours

3rd March.
My Darling,
Many thanks for your note of a long while ago. What has happened I was looking forward to one on Monday or yesterday. [sic]
Well in the first six nights back here I was on 4 Raids. Nuremburgh [sic]! Cologne! St Nazaire, and BERLIN. All were highly Successful The [sic] Berlin one espesially [sic]. That Rate of operating is far too quick. It is extremely tiring. I have had a return of my catarrh too.
I have really been too busy to get too browned off at being back here but now I have had a moments [sic] respite. The realities has set in & I do feel really miserable & I missed you terribly last night dear.
Up to the present I have not heard any more about my Commission I do wish they would hurry up about it
Niether [sic] of the Boys or Pauline have developed measles have they? I hope not anyway.
Well my love I love you so much & do wish you were nearer but I must close now darling
All my love
Yours always

[inserted in red] My last letter – he was killed 26-5-43. [/inserted in red]
[inserted] P.S. yes that mirror would do nicely Thanks [/inserted]
My Darling,
Many thanks for your letter to hand today. I intended to write you yesterday but we were flying (went to ST Mazaire last night) The weather up here was foggy last night so we returned to Pershore in Worcester alive. It caused a mild panic when 16 Lancasters landed there too
Adverting to that additional 19/= you are already getting 17/6 & if the WSG people can
[page break]
tell the A.M. how to get that 1/6 a week your welcome.
I am going to try to get to Skeg [Skegness] on my next day off to see Bert No one seems to know where this Higher Pollin [sic] is
I am pleased to hear that D & T are reasonably well but it is unfortunate about Pauline.
Well love this is all my paper so I must close
All my Love
yours always
Ian.

Darling,
Many thanks for the letter forwarded by you [inserted] Received [/inserted] this morning I didn’t want it really though. I am browned off again dear. Fed up and far from home. I had a letter from Rex & they are still waiting for something from the Inland Revenue people. He said if you had not disposed of the gold He could get a market for it So [sic] will you please get it to Chester.
I am expecting to come on leave again about the 3rd of June for 6 days, but I am not banking on that too definitely yet- I shant [sic] be surprised if it gets put

back as usual. I could do with it now really as I am in a restless mood.
The other night (Wednesday we [corrected: was “was”] Inaugurated our new Flight All the Air crew took the Ground Crews into Grimsby on a binge. There was about 120 of us. We Monopolized [sic] the biggest Room in the Poshest Hotel & Fairly lit the town up. I have never seen such a big Booze up, and so orderly too There [sic] were two chaps who passed out, but none misconducted themselves in any way which was very surprising. There was one particularly amusing incident with The Revolving Door when a chap [corrected] couldn’t [/corrected] find his way out and just kept on walking Round & Round.
I wish this ruddy war was over I am utterly cheesed off with it
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
I was looking at that snap of us where we have D in the sea and was longing violently for such times again I hope the war is over before I am too old to enjoy em [sic] again.
I wonder what will really happen after the war? [sic] Things are going to take a hell of a lot of straightening out again you know.
Have you sent the School bill in to the WSG Dept [Department] yet? get it off as quickly as possible please also the Drs. [Doctors] bill too.
Well Dearest I must close now. All my love to you darling I love you more than ever & wish you were here. Please tell me about David & what he is doing at school

Dearest
I thought there would have been a note from you this morning. Still I suppose that it will be here tomorrow.
When I wrote on Sat or was it Friday I was waiting to know if I was going on a course to Derby. Well I am still waiting.
We went to Kiel last night. It was disappointing from our point of View because low clouds obscured the Target. It was a very heavy raid & I dont [sic] doubt it will be found that heavy damage was done.
I am putting in my "PRO FORMA" (formal leave application) today, so it looks as though we might get it this time
[page break]
The weather here at the moment is the cats wiskers [sic]. I hope it continues for my leave period too, then that should be wizard.
Well my dear I am a bit Sleepy so I will close now with all My Love for you & The boys.
Always Yours
Ian

Dearest one,
Many thanks for your little note of this morning. I am sorry to hear that you are not well & hope you are soon fit again.
I am afraid that I have no news of any kind to impart so I am damned if I know what I am going to write about. I am browned off. When I was operating every night nearly, time went much quicker & one had not time to get browned off although I thought at the time I was being [deleted] being [/deleted] worked to [corrected] death [/corrected] .
I shall be ages finishing my tour if I keep on at this rate I would not mind if you were near so I could spend some of the time with you
Now it is after 10. P M & I am going to turn in because I too have a slight cold, & an hour extra in bed wont [sic] do me any harm. So Good night & god bless.
[page break]
[underlined] Wednesday. 31st [/underlined]
Many thanks for your letter this morning. You did not tell me when [corrected] Bert [/corrected] was leaving Skeg [Skegness] though. I have written to him but unless I hear from him before Saturday I shall not go.
I am more than pleased to hear that you are much better. I may [corrected] be [/corrected] coming to Derby for a course at Rolls Royce soon I have applied & The Engineering officer has said he will see what he can do.
While I am writing this Victor Silvester is giving a Rumba lesson. I wonder if you are listening too
Well my dear I still miss you terribly & am about browned off with "all this here" being separated The beggar of it is I dont [sic] see any signs of the war ending yet at all.
Ill [sic] Close now darling with all my love for you
Always your Ian xxx

My Darling,
Many thanks for the parcel & the letter. I am writing to Bert by this post & I shall try to see him this weekend.
I was at St Nazaire again last night but I was not on the Berlin show for a change. although it was an easy trip this time the weather favoured our chaps
I hoped that you wallopped [sic] the pair of them for eating those tablets? You should have done as a warning.
On Saturday I received a parcel from Aunt Jessie containing Sea Stockings. They were
[page break]
most comforting last night too. She said she can let me have another Pair [sic] for some one [sic] else so I am getting a pair for our Rear Gunner. He has a terrifically cold job at the best of times.
By the way my leave now is due to Commence on the [underlined] 14th [/underlined] of next month. If we get any more postponements [sic] It [sic] will B- well be August Holidays.
Well my dear I must close now because I have to write Aunt J. & Bert. It is a marvellous Lake District morning now I wish you were here darling
All my love for now
Ever yours
Ian.

My Darling
Just a little note to let you know I have written to the G.A. & returned them receipt Well one more trip done. We went to ST Nazaire on Monday it was a good trip & we got a good photo again. Scarcely any opposition at all. Just how I like it.
Did I write you yesterday I think I did? If I did I [smudged] probably [/smudged] told you that we had been to ST Nazaire anyway. Time is so funny I am damned if I know what day it is at all now. Still Ill [sic] start this & leave it open in case you write tomorrow
I only know that my leave

My Boys too. I am missing all there [sic] little devilments. Still when one thinks of Harold Ashton, & Bert Burgess I suppose I have a [corrected] hell [/corrected] of a lot to be thankful for too.
Well my dear I must close now & get some shut eye

Dearest,
Many thanks for yours of this morning also the 16 /= Cheque, which I received at Wickenby before coming here.
Well first of all Ill [sic] give you the Gen. My Skipper was posted here as Flight Commander. So now him being the exalted Rank of Squadron Leader he can be a bit dictatorial so he said he wanted his own crew from Wickenby with him. So here we are.
This is a very nicely

Situated spot just a ten minutes bus ride from Grimsby & a bus every 20 minutes. The grub (up to present) is better than at Wickenby., but The Billets (2 Sgts in a Room) are 2½ miles from the Drome & ¾ mile from the mess.
The Billets themselves are very nice really 2 beds 2 chairs Table & Stove & Polished Lino on the floor.
I think I shall like it here.
Last night I went into Grimsby & to the flicks.
The suburbs of Gy [sic] are lovely The nicest approach of any town Ive [sic] been too [sic].
The town itself

is a bit Dingy though Reasonalby (sic) clean. The Shopping area is spread out over the [corrected] town [/corrected] & in consequence The (sic) are patches of Drab [corrected] warehouses [/corrected] in between.
Adverting to your letters I have not yet written to Aunt Jessie but will do so tomorrow.
Now as regards the car. It will not be worthwhile licencing [sic] it after all because I shall soon have finished Ops & then will not be able to any Juice In the meantime I will write to Ghents. See what is happening

The insurance you have seems alright as it covers it while standing idle. By the way my leave still stands at 10th of April (I should not have many trips left to do then. I hope)
I hope you can [corrected] read [/corrected] this Pencil because I have no ink here yet. Oh! I did not tell you we have a Radio in our Room to [sic]. It is not fixed up yet but that is my first job tomorrow.
Today I have been down to Marham near Swaffham

My Darling
Many thanks for your short note Received to day [sic]. Well I have now not operated for two nights & I dont [sic] think I shall be operating tomorrow either. The last op was Stuttgart. It was quite good too. We have had about six new crews in so that should relieve the pressure a bit anyway
I have one disappointment for you & that is my leave has been put back into April [corrected] about [/corrected] the 9th I think.
I have heard from Rex again. He told me that he had been to Gt Wyrley & had been chasing the Lawyers. Apparently there is some hitch with the Inland Revenue people, They apparently want some more duties.
[page break]

Poor old Bert is still getting trouble isnt [sic] he [deleted] re [/deleted]
I feel terribly fed up at times. That is one reason why I dont [sic] mind a lot of “ops” because the time just flies & one has no time to reflect. At times like this one at least I get awfully homesick.
Last night our crew went to Lincoln, The Skipper has his wife & daughter up for 3 days and I met them last night I felt miserable after wards though I wished you were here.
Still by my next leave should have finished my tour of ops & we can do something then to celebrate
If I can I shall get my
[page break]
[inserted] 3 [/inserted]
11 remaining trips in about 20 days then I shall come on leave then. What will happen afterwards I dont [sic] know. Where they will send me God knows. I think I might try to get transferred to Ferry Command. I dont [sic] fancy instructing anyway
I am pleased the boys are keeping well. It seems funny to have you talking about Davids [sic] School Clothes. Also I hope you have not been too upset by having your tooth out as you say you are doing tomorrow
Well my love Ill close now & see what is for supper
All my Love
Always yours

Just a line to enclose with D's card I wish I were coming too really Last night as you probably know from the papers we were at Hamburgh. [sic] It was quite a good show too. We are certainly giving the B's a real rough time now and believe me there is worse to come for them yet. We are not operating from this station tonight for a change. A welcome one too. My Dearest,
Just a line or two in haste. I have only just recently got up. We went to Nuremburgh last night, and it was a long eventful trip (for which we were really duly thankful) except one of our engines went unservicable [sic] just as we were leaving Germany & we came back quite comfortably on 3 engines. It is very comforting to know that if anything happens to 1 engine you can still cope. It was quite a minor defect & can be remedied in ½ hr or so.
You were slightly out about [undecipherable] but I did it last night in school
Also you will be pleased to here [sic] that I have been placed in charge of all the other Flight Engineers on the Station This is one step [underlined] nearer [/underlined]
Poor old Tony! He is a love of course David is older & has other interests now, and yet he doesnt [sic] understand.
Well my love, this is about the lot for now so Ill close with all my love for you & the Boys. I am missing you darling.
Yours always
Ian.

My Darling,
Many thanks for your nice letter received yesterday. It was the nicest letter I have received [deleted] yet [/deleted] for a very long [smudged] while [/smudged]. I am glad to hear that those people are nice & that they are company for you. It will be a change any way to get a bit of Social [sic] life at Norley.
I have my old driving licence here so I will attend to that. Also I would be glad if you could see A Wharburton because I believe that Ghents [sic] are taking over from yesterday the 8th
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
I am trying to write this under great difficulties. Everybody in the billet is trying to jabber at once & make toast etc etc.
I bet D did enjoy himself [sic] How is it that Norah is unattached? What is wrong with her? She seems to be attractive enough or used to anyway.
[underlined] 10th [/underlined]
I had to pack this up last night. There was too much of a hullaballoo. (Is that how it is sppelled).[sic]
Well let me thank you for the Pullover, we have had a few cold days again so it has been most [deleted] y [/deleted] useful [corrected].
It has already been to the South atlantic [sic] coast of France. Lorient
That was a terrible raid for the folks on the ground.
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
but it was easy enough for us.
I hate to think of the poor Frenchies who were living there.
I also got your note of the 8th today too. I am looking forward to this leave & all being well I should be home on Tuesday 16 [underlined] th [/underlined] [sic] There is a slight 'possibility' of the leave being postponed but I should know in good enough time to let you know too.
Well my darling I must close now with all my love to you and the boys
Ever yours only
Ian

22. January 1943.
My Dearest,
Many thanks for your letters of [deleted] last [/deleted] yesterday & today. It is distressing to hear about David again, but please wire me if he gets much worse. I dont [sic] like asking for time off but my boys & you come first in cases like this
We are certainly having a rough time of it lately with Drs & what not.
I am feeling terribly fed up too I could do with a real good holiday again. The weather at the moment is enough to give any body the gripes apart from anything else. Nearly everybody has gone out of camp tonight & it is pouring with rain. This place is no health resort at the best of times so you can imagine what it is like now
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
A few nights ago I was in Lincoln & went to the pictures to see “BAMBI” It is a beautiful film but it is not a film for very young kids The picture was almost stolen by the rabbit “Thumper”.
Well my love I must close now. I do hope darling that David is soon better for your sake.
I do wish I were with you
All my love
& keep your Pecker up
Yours Ever
Ian

28th Dec 1942.
My Darling,
If ever you get this note one of two things will have happened. I will either not be alive or will be a prisoner of war. In either case darling I shall be leaving you a great responsibility with our two lads, but I know that you will always do your best for them. Please dont [sic] coddle them. Many times they will do things that make you fear for them & their safety, but if they have the confidence to carry out there [sic] exploit dont [sic] try to hinder them You must encourage them to be self reliant.

If I should not come out of this war alive I would like them to complete [corrected] their [/corrected] vocational training then travel abroad if possible, & doing anything if necessary for say two, or 3 years. They will in that way gather a wealth of experience and get an outlook on life that will get them anywhere. Again dont [sic] forget to impress them that they will get nothing without working for it & that they will only get out of life what they put in it.
In conclusion dearest all I have ever done & do is for you & the boys although I have many times annoyed, disappointed & let you down.
I have always loved you & always will
Cheerio dearest
Yours Ian.
