My dear Jessie,
Thanks for your letter today and now you are away I look forward to every other morning for your chatty little notes. It was rather late Tuesday to write you much so I will try and make up for it tonight.
When I arrived here on Monday tea-time I met a W.O.A.G. who came here a week before and he offered to go with me to Doncaster to fetch my kit so off we went and after unsuccessfully searching for the kit-bags we had a stroll round the town. There are bags of cinemas and seems

to be quite a spot of night life about in the town. I should think it is a [deleted] but [/deleted] bit bigger than Peterboro [sic] but is more or less just another provincial town. As Frank had to be back for night flying we left on the 8.45 bus. Its only 10d return and there are buses every thirty minutes. On Tuesday we reported to accounts and various other people and in the afternoon to the Flight Commander of 106 Squadron. As there was nothing for us to do that day we got off sharply at five o’clock and went into town to see Spencer Tracy in “North West Passage” which I thoroughly enjoyed. Its an all colour film of the war in Canada between the French and ourselves each side being aided by various Indian tribes. If it comes your way you

should try and see it. The next morning saw us in the crew room at 0830 and after sitting around all day I was suddenly detailed for some practice bombing. In the Hampden they use the automatic bombsight about which I know nothing so I had to scurry around and collect some gen before I could start. The target is in the shape, and of the size of a submarine and I was surprised to learn that seven out of my eight bombs would have sunk it. Pretty good eh. In the evening I started to take my byke [sic] engine down preparoty [sic] to fitting new rings and after supper went to bed. This morning I was supposed to be going to a lecture on this automatic b.sight but just as I got to the Armoury I was sent for to

navigate a machine down to Hendon. Gee was I in a flat spin. I’d never done any work in aHampden and I was being sent down to London with all those hundreds of balloons and fighter boys Visibility was very poor but I got the plane there O.K. although we were several times challenged by fighters and on arrival found that we were there to show the Observer Corp what a Hampden looked like from the ground and the air. The night before the aerodrome had been bombed up with dozens of incendiary bombs and the Franco sign works on the North Circular Road had been demolished and also a Tube Station near by. There were two warnings while we were there but nothing happened. Incidentally was I proud

of myself when all these civvie chaps came around asking me about my machine. They are fine jobs for navigation and have bags of guns for defence. I feel very happy about my chances in them and prefer them to any machine I have been in. At Hendon I ran into a Southend lad who I met a Prestwick and he was there demonstrating a Battle oh boy did he envy me. I found he was stationed Binbrook which is not far from here and that they had come from Eastchurch in the Thames Estuary from where they had been bombed out. Withal the weather was bad we made the journey back without incident and on landing the pilot said ”simply wizard navigation”; did my chest swell.
I’m glad you sent off Millys [sic] and

Patty’s birthday cards. You will have to decide yourself about Mansfield as [inserted] it [/inserted] seems unlikely I shall even get a day off here to see you where ever you are. Were Gwen & Agnes keeping well? Send me one of the photos of you and Pam as soon as they are ready. Darling, don’t you ever think for one moment that you are a nuisance as having you near makes all the difference to this war, and I am looking forward to when you are near again.
Give my best wishes to Mr & Mrs Gorton and always remember that you and Pam are always in the thoughts of
Your devoted husband

Dear Jessie,
This must be the longest you have had to wait for a letter but as you know I was on guard Monday and did not write last night because I did not know whether I was going to get my pass for the week end. I am glad to say it’s gone through all right, although I’ve heard rumours that there will be no leave until Xmas. Providing these rumours are wrong you can expect me about nine Fri evening. Friday afternoon is Pay Parade so I shall not get away until about four and shall probably have to go via Brighton. I’ve just come upstairs from a Maths Exam which the others took on Monday. That guard duty certainly did me a good turn as the exam paper took the boys by surprise in that it contained a logarithm and trigonometry
[page break]
questions. I had the chance to polish up those two branches. I finished the paper with nearly an hour to spare and think I have got them all right. For P.T. this morning we had a cross country run about half way to Hastings and back. Two months ago I should have said I couldn’t do it. They have worked wonders on me physically. Thanks for the Standard it’s very pleasant reading when one is far from home. and would like it every week. As far as I know we do not get a ration allowance to take with us it just goes to that mysterious “account”. I had a lovely tea on Sunday plenty of cakes and a chocolate gateax [sic] and a home made sponge sandwich it was all very homely and the sister was young and pretty though not to be compared with my sweet little wife. Our evening [inserted] at Xmas [/inserted] out will be the Saturday night and I hope that will be convenient for everybody.
Give my love to all and tell Pam Daddy is coming home. Get plenty of sleep before the week end dear as I shall want to talk to you for hours. Just you and I snuggled up close.
Bye Bye till Friday darling

Dear Jessie,
You seemed to have excelled yourself at letter writing. I had one at tea time yesterday and two this morning. I’ve just written to the Abbey Road giving them particulars of my income and also told them that I had arranged with you to pay £2.7s per month. I hope you can manage that because that is the amount of interest and must be payed. Also I want you to draw from the bank £1.1.9 being the balance of the 7/3s for Sept. Oct. Nov. I am enclosing £2 one of which I want you to pay Ticketts. Sorry to hear you are hard up but still everyone seems to be in the same boat.
Hope you were successful in finding a young man up to a point I shouldn’t mind [deleted] but [/deleted] as you would
[page break]
would [sic] know how far to go.
When I wrote the date on this letter it made Xmas seem very near just twenty days and I shall be home for a long time. The thought of that will carry me on. Well dear I’ve got to dash off to register this so tell you more later. Give my love to Mum and Joyce Gwen and Pat and think of me always as
Your loving husband

Dear Jessie,
I am going to try and write this in between phone calls so I sit at my desk as Duty Pilot in the Watch Office.
As I told you in my last letter I could not get out Saturday night but was fortunate to get to Peterboro[sic] Sunday evening and withal it was late managed to contact a policemans[sic] wife who may be able to accommodate you. I have to go again tomorrow night (Tuesday) to see if everything is O.K.
Providing its all arranged I will send you a wire to proceed to Peterboro [sic] to the address I will give you in this letter, and I will hang on to this until tomorrow when I will include a travel warrant. I am sending your case on and if it does not reach you in time you must leave none of your things behind for Ethel to send on. Take my tip[?] and have light things and then it wont[sic] cost so much to pack on. If you have not already been to the billetting [sic] officer you should go at the first opportunity and fix up for a transfer of your allowance.
I am hoping to have you up here by Saturday so you can look forward to a happy evening with your husband.

Dear Jessie,
Many thanks for your nice long letters but I am afraid this letter to you will be rather short. Reason is I want you to get this by Friday evening.
We had no exams yesterday and providing I had I am being posted to No. 17 O.T.U. Upwood. This is near Peterborough and only 18 miles from Cambridge and we hope to get away Friday night or Saturday morning and to be able to get a night in London. If this is O.K. I want you see if you can leave Pamela with Ethel and Horace and go up to Auntie Nellies[sic] for the week end. To do this you must leave Dorchester Saturday morning and wait for me at Aunties[sic]. Dont [sic] take this letter as definite as I will send you a confirmatory telegram.
Its[sic] a pity I cant [sic] get to Dorchester but still I hope see you at Teddington. Love to All from
your loving husband

Dear Jessie
I am afraid I haven’t much to tell you yet other than to say I got back here about half past eleven. I had to wait until half past seven for a bus and then had to run down the High Street. This afternoon we started to learn semaphore signalling. You know how the sailors do with two flags.
Mountstephen has had his Radio rental transferred so we have got a wireless here now. Hildegard is just singing “The Natural Thing to Do”. This boy and girl song reminds [inserted] me [/inserted] of us.
I feel a bit blue tonight, miss you so much, but hope to see you again soon and have another wonderful week-end. Love to you and all and give Pam a goodnight kiss for me.
Always your adoring husband

Dear Jessie,
Well we've got here at last and are in a big hotel. We went to Barking changed to Victoria and from there to Brighton and on to Bexhill A lorry picked us up at Bexhill Station and took us to the hotel. Had a good dinner and then a medical exam. After that we were given our rooms. There are five sleeping in my room on single beds with straw mattresses and pillows. Four blankets but no sheets and bare boards. There [deleted word] is hot and cold water laid on but no soap or towels. I think it is going to be very nice here though plenty of hard work and drill. The discipline is rather hot and we have been told what we can do and what not. Gloves must be worn with greatcoats and nobody [deleted word] can wear shoes and so on. Well dear we are just going out to recconoitre [sic] the district and find where we [deleted] go [/deleted] find a cup of tea. We have been warned about incorrectly addressed letters so be careful.

My Dear Jessie,
Well now the thaws [sic] set in you will be able to be warm again and I hope it does not bring to light any burst pipes. It was simply amazing here, last night the snow was thick and it was freezing hard and yet this morning almost all the snow had gone. By this evening everything is under water and the streams are full almost to overflowing and the aerodrome is like one huge pond. Flying is out of question [sic] so we have all day tomorrow off but have got to go in all day Sunday. If there is no flying Sunday we shall have to do Plotting all day. The course contains hours and hours of this plotting which consists of laying down the dead reckoning position of an aircraft on a Mercators Chart and the position of the aircraft on this chart can be placed for any time during the flight. I’ll have to send you a copy of our programme for a week and then you will see how busy we are. Actually today I have been writing down notes all day on Wireless and Recco. Dead Reckoning Theory and Maps and Charts.
[page break]
We write pages and pages of dictated notes and then take them home to study them during the evening. Also we have Maths to do in our spare time and I do not know how I’ve kept going this last few days I have felt so queer. I have lost my voice completely through coughing but have bought a bottle of Famels Syrup. [sic] which has cured the bark and I think the throat will soon improve now. I do hope you and Pamela have managed to keep well although in this trying weather it must be very difficult. Tomorrow we are going to have some haggis in celebration of Robert Burns the great Scottish poet. To tell you the truth I am not particularly looking forward to it. You know I never did like strange mixtures. But still by this time tomorrow I shall know the worst. It was nice to hear Tom was home last week end but think that providing I am able to pass this course which in all lasts six months it might be that long before I am home. Then it will be another honeymoon without a doubt. It seems as if Frank may be lucky dodging the army. How is Milly getting along. I am not waiting for sox [sic] but you can send them with the scarf. On Sundays when not flying we have church parade at 9 A.M. so theres [sic] no rest. Well darling I must get on with some homework so with all my love I say
Cheerio and Goodnight my Sweet
Harry. xxxxx

Dear Jessie,
I got back here on time Wednesday and would you beleave [sic] it that all we did in the afternoon was one hours [sic] drill. They might just as well let us have until midnight. Orders have come through from the A.O.C. that there will be no leave this week end [sic] so there will be a rush for next. I hope to be lucky as I think it will be the last chance as we have heard we shall all be gone by the 15 [underlined] th [/underlined] Jan. Some of A Flight are going to Scotland on Monday.
There was a hard frost this morning and at half past eight we were doing P.T. we certainly had to keep on the move. Since dinner it has been snowing hard. If it keeps on we shall find it difficult to drill. We are praying that it does. Snow or not we
[page break]
we are going to the pictures tonight. We are going to see the Crazy Gang in Frozen Limit.
The food seemed terrible yesterday. Beef potatoes and peas and a very small piece of cake covered with custard for dinner. For tea fish cake and bread and jam and after Xmas fare that seemed pretty bloody. Todays [sic] has been better or I’ve been hungrier, probably the excersize [sic] has made my appetite sharper.
Today has been very busy P.T. Drill and Nav. a Morse Test and Recconaissance [sic] lecture and the chaps are waiting for me to go to the pictures so I must close now and get along. Hope to have more to tell you next time. Give my love to all from your

Bexhill on Sea
Fri Dec. 8.
Dear Jessie,
I had quite a fan mail this morning. One from you and Mum and one Milly. You want to know what the R.A.F. inscription means. I believe I’ve told you before it means “To the Stars through Adversity” and is very apt. We are certainly meeting adversity at Bexhill. Thank Mum for her interesting letter and from what she says you are getting more than your share of excitement. Milly says she will try and see us after Xmas. Will you ask Mum to write to her and ask her to come before the holiday as our leave is only from the 21st to the 27th. That means the day after Boxing Day getting up at 6A.M. to go back. We have been told that in the second week in January we shall be going to the Isle of Man and so we must make the
[page break]
[sic] of my Xmas leave. Its [sic] quite possible that once in the Isle of Man I shouldn’t see you for about three months so do you think it worth while [sic] getting a long week end [sic] next week in view of the fact that it will cost 12/6 to get home and the same again on the following Thursday. I shan’t have much money over the holiday but think it worth being hard up to see you. If you feel you would like me to have the week end [sic] let me know [underlined] by return. [/underlined]
We have just been issued with all our flying kit two flying suits helmet goggles three pairs of gloves and a pair of fur lined top boots valued in all at £15. I fail to see how we shall take all our stuff away in one kitbag but still plenty of time to worry about that.
Went to the cinema last night and saw Union Pacific and enjoyed it. Well I want to catch the post so goodnight my love.
From your loving

Dear Jessie,
Thank you so much for your long letter of today and I am ever so glad to find expressed a much happier tone and to hear you are comfortably settled. As you will have heard by now there is no place near hear [sic] you can stop at and you had better find out if you can stay with Nellie and Harold for some time. I hope you can as I think you would be happy with folks you know and who love us all
You say Mum may be going down to Uncle Ernie and later to Joyce so it appears that she is settled for some weeks and as it will be company for Joyce who will be living on her own its not so bad for either of them. I was terribly sorry to hear of Millies [sic] loss and hope she will be philosophic about it and hope for better luck another time. Has she any plans after leaving Tilbury? If not will she be able to live you [sic] and the folks at Teddington. Maybe she will be able to go with you when you move.
It seems the corporation are doing us well over the electricity account but I think the water company have a cheek wanting half rates while nothing is being used.
[page break]
Have you payed [sic] the A.R. anything for this month and if not how are you fixed for cash.
So much for questions and answers perhaps you would like to know how we spend our days here. Up at quarter six and P.T. at quarter to seven till quarters past. P.T. this morning consisted of a cross country run and back for breakfast and on parade at ten past eight. Lectures start at eight fifteen with half an hours [sic] drill at quarter to ten and a break until half past then another two hours lectures until twelve thirty. Just one hour for dinner and back at half past one for three hours [corrected] continuous [/corrected] lectures and one hour for tea. At half past five we are back again to do one hours buzzing. We are simply rushed through and yesterday had to learn all the parts and the action of a Vickers Gas Operated Gun and today a Lewis. Tomorrow we go down to the range for ground machine gun work which should be more interesting I think and we start flying next week. For gunnery we are using some power operated turrets. Quite a busy day don’t you think.
Write and answer all my questions and I shall know how to go on.
Give my love to all and kisses for you and Pamela.
Your loving husband

Dear Jessie,
Thanks for your long letter of yesterday and I suppose that will be the last for about a week until you get my new address.
I hope this finds you and Pamela well and that Mums [sic] bronchitis has left her by now. The news of baby Robert was better this time and I shall be happy to hear that the lad is picking up and taking an interest in life. You will be very quiet at the bungalow next week with Joyce and Pat at Hamble, Gwen evacuated, and Mil in Rochford.
Have you heard any more about evacuation in Southend as the capitulation of the Belgian Army worsens the situation and although its serious dont [sic] worry darling and keep your chin up. Im [sic] very glad that Agnes decided to send Gwennie away because it lessens your responsibilities and in an emergency will give you all more chance. Our difficulty in regard to a voluntary move is that we have spent all our money and if you were to go we should be saddled with mortgage repayments for the bungalow or lose everything we have worked for. Of course if there was a compulsory Government scheme I think we should be able [sic] leave our furniture and let the Abbey Road take a run
[page break]

and they could do nothing about it. Rates as well could go to blazes whereas if we left the bungalow furnished we should still be liable for them and until I am earning Sergeants [sic] pay I cant [sic] afford to keep them going and support you in digs somewhere else. I feel you can rely on a scheme coming along if there arises a real necessity for you to move.
I had a reply from the A.R. and it was only about more money when I am promoted and they are quite ready to wait until that comes along.
You are certainly seeing more of the war than we are at present and your description of Southend at present seems quite warlike. I wish I could get home for a day or two to see it all and just stroll around the bungalow and see Mum and Pam and the different folks we know but maybe I shall be able to after B & G.
Thanks for your snap and that Vickers book and you can bet I shall do my best to be a crack shot
Sunday Dinner Time
Well darling your letter and our meeting at Waterloo have upset all I have written so far but I am going to carry on as it may be of some interest.
Since arriving here we have been running around from one block to another in terrific heat and feeling very uncomfortable. We have signed forms galore and suffered from all the red tape imaginable. We were not allowed to go

out of the camp last night and today have been told that Weymouth and Dorchester have been put out of bounds. That only leaves a small village for us to go out to so I shant [sic] have much chance to get around.
All this morning we have running around [sic] and this afternoon have got to go down to the range. Maybe we shall get some time off this evening when I will try and write you some more.
There is no living accommodation near hear [sic] and as Weymouth and Dorchester are out of bounds I cant [sic] see at the moment much chance of you getting down here but when I can get out and look around I will see what can be done.

Mon May 27th
Dear Jessie,
Still waiting for some news from home but hope to find a letter waiting at Redbrae. I suppose you were very tired when you got home and I can imagine you almost falling asleep over the few lines you managed Tuesday night.
Saturday was a rather dull day and a shortage of cash curbed my activities beyond a couple of trips to Ayr. Paddy Tonker and myself went in during the morning to find a suitable gift for Miss Anderson and a little something for the girls. As they have all been so good to us during [deleted] a [/deleted] our stay here we have decided to give generously and are each going to subscribe one pound each and
[page break]

Mitch is going to send on ten shillings. You imagine our difficulty trying [sic] find anything suitable for one so well provided for as Miss A. and decided on a cigarette box. It came a shock to me the price of decent boxes and after seeing several silver ones were shown an onyx cigarette box that immediately interested us. The price was a bit stiff £3-17-6 but it was something in keeping with [inserted] the [/inserted] quality of the Redbrae furnishings. It is a simple polished white onyx box rectangular in shape with a green inlaid border on the lid hinged with a gold piano type hinge and capable of holding about fifty cigs. We intend to get the girls an R.A.F. brooch each or a crested compact.
Saturday evening Stan and I went to Greens Playhouse and saw “Traitor Spy”
[page break]

and “Sky Patrol”. Traitor Spy was quite a good effort for an English film and Sky Patrol starring Tailspin Tommy was an exciting air picture.
Do you remember the boys telling us about the motor lawn mower and their efforts to start it, well your brilliant husband got on the job yesterday and we had it running in under an hour. The result of that was to get the tennis court mowed and the nets up and from about seven to nine last evening your husband was learning to play tennis. The game is much more difficult than it looks but I made good progress and I think in time [inserted] and [/inserted] with plenty of practice could play a fair game. All this Sunday activity and after swinging that mowing machine during the afternoon I felt stiff and fagged out
[page break]

so after supper went up and had a bath and so to bed. This morning I am wincing at every movement and ache from head to foot. Every muscle in my body is stiff and I must try and get a game with Donald today to loosen up.
I heard on the news last night that they are going to evacuate schoolchildren from your area and I was wondering if the scheme included young children and mothers as did the London scheme. If you get the opportunity to go I certainly would advise you to do so. Gwen can go for certain and I think her mother should send her. When you have seen the damage done to houses and people on the news lately I dont [sic] think anybody should keep their children home now they have an opportunity to go. If adults are obliged to stay they will be able to better look after themselves with out [sic] young children to have
[page break]
5
to shepherd around. If the government evacuation plan does not include younger children and mothers you had better write to the folks at Teddington and ask them if things get too warm could they accommodate you for a while until I settle somewhere. Its [sic] not worth keeping on at the bungalow if there is any possibility of you coming to harm.
Since starting to write this I have had your newsy letter and the two Standards. Congratulate Milly on her having a baby boy and I hope they both progress as well as you and Pam did, Franks [sic] like a dog with two tails I bet. Its [sic] unfortunate that he cant [sic] get a leave to be with Mil when she comes out but no doubt he will be able to when things are a little quieter.
Paddy has just gone across to try find our travelling programme for Saturday and I hope to include some times and directions for you to bring Pam up to London
[page break]
6
to see me.
Well dear Paddy has just come back from the office and I am afraid there is not much opportunity for you to see me as we are leaving Prestwick Friday night on the 9.12 and should be at Euston by 7.05 A.M. We are due to leave Waterloo at 8.30 A.M. and the journey and packing in and out of the stations has got to be done in under an hour and a half. I should have loved to have seen Pamela but for the few minutes it hardly seems worthwhile and it would mean you catching an early train up to London before the Southend buss’s [sic] start.
Tell Mum I am sorry she has bronchitis and hope she will soon recover. Give my love to all at Redwood and let the memories of our holiday and all our happy days keep you going till we meet again.
Always your loving
Harry xxxxx

Dear Jessie,
Was glad your journey went according to schedule and you managed the 8.4. I understand just how tired you must have felt and how glad you must have been to see Pam again. The weather seems to have broken up now and its [sic] raining hard now and we have nothing to do but sit around and while the day away reading and talking. I have finished my flying time here Tuesdays [sic] flight making my total 67.50 hours.
Details of our postings have been given us today and the course is being split up to go Isle of Man, Ireland, and Weymouth. All of us “Redbrae” boys are going to Weymouth and all feel very satisfied with our station. Being so near home its [sic] not too much to hope that you may be able to come down there at some time during my stay there, or perhaps I shall
[page break]
get home one week-end. Its [sic] going to be a long journey down from Scotland and I am afraid it will be direct and that I shall not be able to break my journey to come home [deleted] fro [/deleted] for a night. But still I am lucky to be going to Warmwell which I understand is a good school.
The news from France continues to be grave and I have heard that the training wings at Bexhill and Hastings have been closed down. From the news [sic] it appears you had some excitement as soon as you reached home. I don’t think you have anything to worry about for a while as the Germans have got to get all the Channel Ports and consolidate their French lines before any large scale attacks could be launched against us. For all that things look pretty grim and you should look to your household A.R.P. and dont [sic] forget if anything happens keep calm.
It has just struck me that if Joyce is going to be near Hamble that wont [sic] be far from Warmwell and if I have her address I may be able to get over to see her one day so as soon as you know where she is going let me know. You say Milly has gone to Rochford. I hope that there is nothing wrong. Tell me all you can about
[page break]
Frank when you have a chance. What is Tom doing at Hamble? You must be very quiet at the bungalow now with Mil and Joyce gone and perhaps you will all be able to have a rest. Tell Mum I hope her cold is getting better.
Well my darling thats [sic] all I can find to tell you tonight except that I love you and you dont [sic] need to be told that do you darling. Goodnight my sweet remember our happy days together all the others to come with
Your loving husband
Harry. xxxxx

Dear Jessie,
Sorry my letter is a day behind but I was busy last night and I have been in Lincoln all afternoon and evening trying to find some digs. My efforts were unsuccessful but I have got the name and address of the billetting [sic] officer and I am going to see him at the first opportunity. The great influx of London people has made accommodation very difficult to find and I hope you will be patient. I am so anxious for you to come here and I felt quite despondent this afternoon all on my own. There are not many chaps I know here and in any case as you can only get away early when you have been on ops the day before its [sic] difficult to get hold of anyone you may get friendly with.
As you may have gathered I did my first trip last night and everything went according to plan. We were sent to Kiel and Cuxhaven which in spite of terrible weather I managed to locate. We set off at six in the evening and I set a course for Amrum Island just off the base of the Danish peninsular and after flying through low cloud and rain and hail showers we flew along and
[page break]
and saw the defences at Heligoland blazing away on our right. Our track just skirted the Frisian Islands and from then we saw nothing for about half an hour until we saw heavy flak going up from Sylt. Our track working out as planned took us between Sylt and the strong defences at the mouth of the River Elbe and all we had to do was glide in across the peninsular and drop our eggs right in the middle of the guns and searchlights around Kiel. The German defences give you a pretty sound idea of your position and the course I set to Cuxhaven brought us right on to the guns [deleted] at [/deleted] there and we were able to drop the rest of our load just where we wanted it. The journey back was uneventful except for a fire display of St. Elmo's Fire which struck the plane in the middle of the North Sea. This phenomena puzzled me until I made some enquiries but for all that it is a wonderful sight. We were going through a storm and all of a sudden it seemed as if the plane was caught in a searchlight and on looking up I found that all the framework of my cockpit had seemed to grow a luminous ruffle all along it. On either side the propeller blades were forming a great blue circle and the whole spectacle was most uncanny. Just in sight of our coast I got a fix which placed me about 4 miles North of my position and so we flew down to the
[page break]
Wash and from there to our base. We landed at half past twelve and after reporting back to Intelligence I wearily made my way to my bed. My first trip was safely and satisfactorily completed. At no time was I afraid but that 350 miles of water between target and home made me feel very conscious of the frailness of man and his machines. The flak is [deleted] una [/deleted] unnerving and when it is all around bursting with huge flashes and with vivid white flashes from the ground the whole spectacle is rather terrifying. That’s seven hours towards my two hundred when I go back for my rest. Roll on two hundred.
Yesterday morning when being examined by the dentist I had one of my back teeth filled and did not think much of the experience. He says I am to go again next week so it looks as if I am going to get some free dental treatment now that I have settled down. I have had some super goggles fitted to my helmet and have drawn a brand new harness and Mae West. For flying I have also had from stores a thick white roll neck pull over or 1 Frock Woolen [sic] as it is called in the stores. Gee its [sic] lovely and warm and although the temperature was below freezing point last night across the North Sea I was never cold. Did you see anything of us Thursday or Friday afternoon when we came over Peterboro and beat the
[page break]
town up a bit. Should you see a Hampden performing overhead you can bet it is us. Its [sic] now five minutes into Sunday morning so I must finish up now and hope to be seeing you again soon. All my love to you both and lots of hugs and kisses from
Your devoted husband
Harry. Xxxxxx
P. S. As you are so near its [sic] not worth a warrant and I should enquire about [deleted] buses [/deleted] a bus via Sleaford it may be quicker and cheaper. I did not receive until last Tuesday the letter you wrote after I left you that week end. Others arrived O. K. Could you send me a sub. of 5/- please. I’m broke

My dear Jessie,
I hope my travelling days are over for I have fallen into what must be the best station in the R.A.F. Absolutely no bullshit and everyone going out of their way to make you comfortable. I shan’t be able to convey to you how different the atmosphere in an [deleted] ap [/deleted] ops squadron is to training station [sic] and the Mess is just marvellous.
Heres [sic] a brief record of my impressions up to now. On arriving Sunday night the messing N.C.O found my billet for the night and wanted to know if I wanted a meal. After cleaning up I went to sit in the mess and found a string band playing light music and waiters bringing beer orders to sergeants and their

wives who may come along any Saturday or Sunday. The large room is comfortably furnished with bags of armchairs and large carpets and a grand red brick fireplace houses a monstrous fire. Monday morning I reported to S.H.Q. and found myself a grand room in Single Sergeants Quarters with a locker comfortable bed two chairs a table and large radiator. Having settled in there I went over to report to 44 Sqdn [Squadron] and when I got in the hangar what a shock I had. Music was playing from a loudspeaker on the wall two badminton courts were being used and a number of flying crews were whirling round on skates. As if trying to hide itself with shame a Hampden was being worked

on right away up in a corner. This entertainment is a great scheme and enables you to get some fun and exercise instead of sitting around in the crew room all day. Skates are provided by the squadron and I had a jolly afternoon very cheaply. In the evening I rode down to Cranwell to see Tom and found that he is living out but with a little trouble got his address and saw Joyce and Pattie as well. They are going to write to you this week and I am going to try and find you some digs in Lincoln where you wont [sic] be far from Joyce. This morning I saw the O.C. of the sqdn [squadron] and he shook me by the hand and hoped I would be happy at Waddington and do some good work. I am in A flight
[page break]
and my Flight Commander is one of the Squadron Leaders who was in my class at Finningley.
We had the string band in the mess for the lunch hour this evening there is an exhibition match at billiards between Newman and Davis. Oh boy what a camp. Our boys were over Berlin Sunday night and [inserted] one [/inserted] of them came down to 2000 feet and got a lovely stick of bombs on Hitler's Chancellery. You wait until I can do that. I am definitely here as navigator bomb aimer and the C.O said he would have to use me as a navigator straight away without giving me a couple of trips as gunner to get used to it. As this is my last sheet of paper I must finish now and am looking forward to hearing from you
Your loving husband Harry.

Our postings are through and I am going to a Hampden Squadron. 44 Squadron, Waddington so you must write to me Sgts Mess. R.A.F. Station Waddington Lincs. The other boys are going to Scampton Hemswell and Lindholme so they wont [sic] be too far away to prevent us having a night out occasionally. I shall be only two miles out of Lincoln so you must find out all you can about

Tues. 15. 10. 40
My Dear Jessie,
My journey back went off all right and I have not heard any more about not being back by 2359. When I got to the station to catch the 1216 I found that the 1015 had not got in then and when it arrived about 1210 I got on and arrived in Doncaster at 3.20. On arrival I went in the YMCA and had two cups of tea with Mrs Garton's jam turnover. Gee it was good. Bill Smith turned up about 4.30 and I had some bacon and tomatoes with him and at half past five had an hours [sic] sleep on the reading room floor. You can bet I did not feel very brisk on Monday and unfortunately had to work until half past eight in the evening when I came straight to my billet and went to bed.
[page break]
Today I have been in the Ally Alley and did a night raid on an oil refinery at Osnabruk. [sic] Every went [sic] off well and my navigation earned the praise of the Flight Sergeant Observer in charge. It’s a wonderful thing this crew trainer and simulates the whole thing. Tonight I have been to Donnie and seen [sic] The Westerner and as its [sic] now nearly midnight I must pack up. We must look forward now to the next time we are together and during that week we will recall our happy week-end. Goodnight darling love and kisses to you and Pam from

Thurs. 17. 10. 40
Dear Jessie,
Well I cant [sic] think of much to tell you tonight except that the weather is very miserable and Tiggy says this is typical of the Midlands and almost every other day is like this. I have got on all right with the Ally Alley and my “raids” have been proved most successfull [sic].
We heard some bad news from Bircham Newton yesterday saying that poor Tonker was missing. Apparently he had been on a formation recco of the Le Havre and were returning, when, with the Isle of Wight in sight they went in cloud and on breaking cloud Tonkers [sic] machine was not with them. A subsequent search proved unsuccessful and it all seems very mysterious. Perhaps
[page break]
some German fighter patrol met them after [deleted] he [/deleted] he had lost contact with the formation in the cloud or maybe his engines cut and he came down and sunk. Writing this reminds [sic] that I did not tell you of Mitch who hit the deck at Penhros [sic]. I envied him his safe job and it just goes to show you never can tell. After living with them for five months it comes as a nasty loss.
To strike a brighter note its [sic] pay day tomorrow and can I do with it. Well lots of love darling from
Your loving husband
Harry xxxx
P. S. My moustache is coming on fine.
Tiggy sends his regards.

Dear Jessie,
After your unhappy letter of yesterday I hope you have heard from Gladys & have found another place in Peterboro’. I went into Doncaster last night to see if I could find you anywhere to stay but was unsuccessful in the short period of daylight at my disposal. On Thursday the local paper is published and I will get a copy and hope to find you some digs. If I do I will send you a wire telling you where and when to go. My pass has gone in for this week end [sic] and if you do not here [sic] from me I should get to Fletton Avenue about tea time Saturday and will have to leave about one o’ clock Monday [corrected: was Sunday] Morning.
Glad you told me about your little escapade with the corporal and I think
[page break]
we have known each other long enough now for me to know you can use your discretion and know how far to go for your own safety. As you say it gave you a break and under the circumstances I don’t mind a bit. I only wish I was there to [deleted] th [/deleted] take you out myself which I know we should both prefer. I have been very good in Doncaster and not spoken to anyone, When I see you this week-end I will give you your present money and would be very pleased to receive your silver chain which I am glad you have looked out for me.
Well sweetheart I hope we can solve your troubles before or over this week - end and have a few happy hours together
Longingly. Harry xxxxx
