29th June 1943.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Foster,
We very much regret that up to the present we have not received any information about your son, Sergeant R.N.F. Foster, No.545719, but we think we should tell you that an official German report has reached us through the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva which states that one member of your son’s crew, Sergeant R.C. White list his life on 17th April 1943. The Air Ministry has accordingly posted this airman as Missing, believed Killed in Action. No mention is made of your son or of the other five members of the crew, and no other details are given.
Further enquiries are being made on your behalf, and you will be notifies at one id any reply is received.
We are deeply sorry to send this news as we realise how much it will add to your anxiety, but we should not feel justified in withholding it from you, nor do we think you would wish us to do so.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mrs Hobbs,
We deeply regret that you will by now have heard from the Air Ministry that your husband, Flight Sergeant F.J. Hobbs, No.1262633, must be posted as “Missing, believed Killed in Action”, and we should like if we may to offer you the very deep sympathy of all in this Department.
The grievous news that your husband and all his companions in the aircraft lost their lives has been sent to the Air Ministry and we know they will write giving you all the details which have reached them.
We are most distressed that you should have to receive this tragic news after enduring these long months of cruel suspense.

Dear Mrs. Wynn,
We very much regret to have to tell you that no information has come through regarding your husband Sergeant I.A. Wynn. No.1024298, although full enquiries are being made on your behalf.
We feel it is only right, however, that you should be informed of the grievous report which has reached us through the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva, concerning the crew of which your husband was a member, for although the information which this contains can but add most deeply to your already great anxiety, we believe that you would not wish it to be withheld.
A telegram from the organisation at Geneva reports that according to the official German Authorities, Pilot Officer G. Russell and Pilot Officer H.N. Petts lost their lives on May 26th. 1943, and also one member of the crew whose identity it had not yet been possible to establish. On receipt of this tragic news the Air Ministry has posted the two airmen whose names are given as "Missing, believed Killed in Action" but since the crew consisted of seven men you will understand that until further information is forthcoming the remaining five members must still be classified as 'missing'.
We realise what this report will mean to you, and we wish you to know that every effort is being made in order to

9th August, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
Although we are still, unhappily, without any news of your husband, Sergeant I A. Wynn No. 1024298 Royal Air Force, we are writing to tell you of a further report which we have now received through the International Red Cross Committee about Pilot Officer Russell and Flying Officer Petts, who were flying in the same aircraft.
The German authorities state that the burial of these two officers took place in the Military Cemetery at Venlo, Province of Limburg, Holland, thus indicating in what locality the disaster had occurred. We believe that you would wish to have this statement in your possession, and it is for this reason we are sending it on to you. Unfortunately no information was given regarding the other members of your husband’s crew.
You will know that our efforts on your behalf are continuing and anything which may come to our knowledge concerning your husband or any of his companions will be passed to you
P.T.O.

WAS/GG/RAF/C.7289
6th January, 1945.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
We are writing to tell you of a further sad report which has reached us by cable from the International Red Cross Committee in connection with our enquiries about the crew in which your husband, Pilot Officer I. A. WYNN, was serving.
The Organisation at Geneva has sent an authoritative statement from the Official Bureau in Berlin that three airmen flying in this aircraft, of whose names they were not aware at the time, were laid to rest in the Military Cemetery at Venlo. The numbers 280, 281 and 298 are quoted for the graves of these crew-members, who would seem to rest near to their companions, Pilot Officer Russell and Flying Officer Petts.
We realise how this tragic information, coming so long afterwards, must needs add to your anxiety and sorrow; but we can only tell you the German reports about those serving together are often sent through at long intervals, and it is unhappily not unusual for later records of burial to reach us which apply to airmen not originally notified as having lost their lives.
P.T.O.
[page break]
-2-
The present military pressure around Venlo will not allow [inserted] of [/inserted] our continued enquiries through channels open to us in that area. We are, however, assured the War Graves Registration & Enquiry Section of the war Office will be making full investigations there whenever this becomes possible, and will forward their records to the Air Ministry who will inform the next-of-kin.
While we are sending you this grievous news with the greatest reluctance, realising its possible implications and what they will mean to you, we do not believe you would wish us to keep back any record we may receive about the crew and hope you will forgive the pain our letter cannot but bring you.
With again the assurance of our deep sympathy at this time.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill,
ppJM

RAF/C.7289
29th July, 1943.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
Thank you for your letter dated 25th July regarding your husband, Sergeant I.A. Wynn No. 1024298.
We are so sorry to have to tell you that we do not advise you to address correspondence to your husband until it is established that he is a Prisoner-of-War, and then the Prisoner-of-War Department at St. James’ Palace will give you all the necessary advice about writing.
In the case of men captured at Singapore, correspondence was sent via the Red Cross because it was clear that large numbers of our men had actually become Prisoners-of-War though we had no news of them.
We realise how anxious you are during these days of waiting but rest assured everything possible is being done on your behalf and immediately any news comes through from the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva or any other source, you will be notified.
With our sympathy in your anxiety.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Bain,
We know that the Air Ministry has written to you to convey the sad particulars of the burial of your husband Sergeant A. Bain No. 658930. As this information has been sent to a different address from that which we have always used in our correspondence with you, we feel we should perhaps write to you also and trust you will therefore forgive any possible duplication.
We are informed by the by the International Red Cross Committee that your husband was buried in the Garrison Cemetery at Doberitz, near Berlin, Germany. The number of his grave is 1 in Row 11 Kg. V.
[Page Break]
Please accept our deep sympathy in the great loss you have sustained and the renewed sorrow which this grievous news must bring to you.
Yours sincerely,

14th January, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Bain,
We are writing to tell you of a report which has recently reached us through the International Red Cross Committee concerning a member of the crew with whom your husband, Sergeant A. Bain 658930, was flying.
The Organisation at Geneva has now forwarded an Official German statement that Warrant Officer Fear was laid to rest in the Garrison Cemetery at Doberitz, Germany.
From the records that reach us, we are able to tell you that it is usual for our enemies to bury members of one crew near to one another, so that the name of this cemetery may actually convey news of the last resting place of your husband.
When an official statement regarding him comes through you will be notified without fail either by the Air Ministry or by ourselves. We believe, however, that you would wish to receive this report, which we are accordingly forwarding.
With our renewed sympathy.

Dear Mrs Bain,
We deeply regret that you will by now have heard from the Air Ministry that your husband, Sergeant A. Bain, 658930, has been posted Missing, believed killed in Action, and we should like to offer you the deep sympathy of all in this Department.
The report that your husband and all the members of his crew lost their lives on the 24th August, [inserted] 1943, [/inserted] was sent to the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva in an official German statement.
Further enquires are being made about your husband’s death and place of burial, and you will be notified without delay when any information reaches the Air Ministry or ourselves.
Many answers are being received to enquiries of this kind, but we are afraid that they often take several months to come through.
