23 September, 1944.
Sir,
I am directed to refer to the telegram sent from this Department on 21st September, 1944, and to inform you that the following letter written by your son, Flying Officer Geoffrey Howard Packham, was read over the German wireless on 20th September, 1944:- [inserted] (LORD HAW HAW!) [/inserted]
"Dear Mum, Dad and Pete,
I have now arrived in a permanent camp, and you can write to me here. You can write as often as you wish and, believe me, those letters will be welcome. You must consult the local Red Cross branch for all details. I can write letters - three letters - and four postcards each month to you, so would you spread the gen when they do arrive, and I can send them all to you. I am not wounded at all, and due to the magnificent Red Cross our stay here will not be so bad. There are just two things I should like to say: first, has my kit arrived at home ? You can use any of it that you wish, Pete. [inserted] TRIUMPH MOTOR BIKE [/inserted]
Was (? "The Times") sent along too? I'll be needing that soon - I hope. Anyway, that is all for now. Space is short, so will you give my regards and west [sic] wishes to all my friends for me? One thing more - please do not send any parcels, but letters in their millions are the staff of life to me for the present. So cheerio, and bags of love.
Ever yours, GEOFF "

Dear Madam,
I desire to confirm the telegram from this Department dated 26th January, 1944, informing you that your son, Flight Sergeant Francis Shamus Cahir, is a prisoner of war.
This information is based on a report received from the International Red Cross Committee, through the Prisoners of War Information Bureau, quoting German sources and states that your son was captured on the 20th December, 1943.
It is regretted that at present neither your son’s place of internment nor his number as a prisoner of war is known in this Department. This information, however, will be received in due course, and I desire to assure you that it will be conveyed to you immediately.
In the meantime, I am forwarding herewith two leaflets which have been issued by the Australian Red Cross Society setting out the procedure to be followed in sending parcels and communications to prisoners of war. Should you desire any further information regarding the method of communicating with your son it is suggested that you get in touch with the Australian Red Cross Society, Spring Street, Melbourne, or with any of its State bureaux.
Yours faithfully,

Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Sergeant Ronald Leslie Gard, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 14th/15th February, 1945, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as rear gunner set out to bomb Rosits, Germany, and failed to return.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee, and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your son is received by you from any source you are requested to kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.

June, 1944.

Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Flying Officer Maurice Arnold Monks, Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 12/13th June, 1944, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as air bomber set out to bomb Gelsenkirchen and failed to return.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee, and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your son is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.

ADVICE TO THE RELATIVE OF A MAN WHO IS MISSING
In view of the official notification that your relative is missing, you will naturally wish to hear what is being done to trace him.
The Service Departments make every endeavour to discover the fate of missing men, and draw upon all likely sources of information about them.
A man who is missing after an engagement may possibly be a prisoner of war. Continuous efforts are made to speed up the machinery whereby the names and camp addresses of prisoners of war can reach this country. The official means is by lists of names prepared by the enemy Government. These lists take some time to compile, especially if there is a long journey from the place of capture to a prisoners of war camp. Consequently “capture cards” filled in by the prisoners themselves soon after capture and sent home to their relatives are often the first news received in this country that a man is a prisoner of war. That is why you are asked in the accompanying letter to forward at once any card or letter you may receive, if it is the first news you have had.
Even if no news is received that a missing man is a prisoner of war, endeavours to trace him do not cease. Enquiries are pursued not only among those
[page break]
who were serving with him, but also through diplomatic channels and the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva.
The moment reliable news is obtained from any of these sources it is sent to the Service Department concerned. They will pass the news on to you at once, if they are satisfied that it is reliable. It would be cruel to raise false hopes, such as may well be raised if you listen to one other possible channel of news, namely, the enemy’s broadcasts. These are listened to by official listeners, working continuously night and day. The few names of prisoners given by enemy announcers are carefully checked. They are often misleading, and this is not surprising, for the object of the inclusion of prisoners’ names in these broadcasts is not to help the relatives of prisoners, but to induce British listeners to hear some tale which otherwise they could not be made to hear. The only advantage of listening to these broadcasts is an advantage to the enemy.
The official listeners can never miss any name included in an enemy broadcast. They pass every name on to the Service Department concerned. There every name is checked, and in every case where a name can be verified, the news is sent direct to the relatives.
There is, therefore, a complete official service designed to secure for you and to tell you all discoverable news about your relative. This official service is also a very human service, which well understand the anxiety of relatives and will spare no effort to relieve it.
[page break]
[underlined] CONFIDENTIAL NOTICE. [/underlined]
The names of all who lose their lives or are wounded or reported missing while serving with the Royal Air Force will appear in the official casualty lists published from time to time in the Press.
Any publication of the date, place or circumstances of a casualty and particularly any reference to the unit concerned, might give valuable information to the enemy, and for this reason, only the name, rank and Service number are included in the official lists.
Relatives are particularly requested, in the national interest, to ensure that any notices published privately do not disclose the date, place or cicumstances [sic] of the casualty, or the unit.
The Press have been asked to co-operate in ensuring that no information of value to the enemy is published.
Any premature reference in the Press to those reported “missing” may jeopardise their chance of evading capture if they have survived without falling into enemy hands.

Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to inform you that they have with great regret to confirm the telegram in which you were notified that, in view of information now received from the International Red Cross Committee, your son, Flying Officer Maurice Arnold Monks, Royal Air Force, is believed to have lost his life as the result of the air operations on the night of 12th/13th June, 1944.
The Committee’s telegram, quoting official German information, states that your son was killed on 13th June. It contains no information regarding the place of his burial.
Although there is unhappily little reason to doubt the accuracy of this report, the casualty will be recorded as “missing believed killed” until confirmed by further evidence, or until, in the absence of such evidence, it becomes necessary, owing to lapse of time, to presume for official purposes that death has occurred. In the absence of confirmatory evidence death would not be presumed until at least six

S.W.1.
Your Ref. P430782/45/S 14 Cas/C 7
30 November 1948.
Dear Mrs. Gill,
I am very sorry to renew your grief in the sad loss of your husband, Flying Officer K. Gill D.F.C., and to convey news which I fear will be distressing to you, but a report has recently been received from the Royal Air Force Missing Research and Enquiry Service in Germany concerning the fate of his aircraft and crew.
This report confirms that his aircraft was shot down at Okel, approximately ten miles south east of Bremen, but unhappily, despite an exhaustive search made by the investigating officers in this area, no trace of his grave or those of any other members of the crew can be found, and it must reluctantly be assumed that owing to the severity of the crash there were no recoverable remains.
In such sad circumstances, it is the intention of His Majesty’s Government to erect a memorial in this country, upon which the names of all our fallen who have no known graves, will be inscribed. The exact form and location have yet to be decided, but a full public announcement will be made as soon as a decision is reached.
I do hope the knowledge that your husband’s name will rank in very gallant company upon this memorial will be of some comfort to you in your great loss.
Yours sincerely,
