Dearest David
I had a letter from Elizabeth this morning which I was overjoyed to get as it was the first news we had has of anyone for a fortnight, we don't lead exactly what you would call a very exciting life here - but I was very sorry to hear that you had got the measles, also that Alastair-Pharoah was no more having been run over by a motor, I was very sorry to hear both these sad items of news being very attached to A.P & dreadfully sorry to hear that he had come to such a sad end.
Elizabeth says you have got the measles in a mild form & that Eric has been in communication with your doctor, and that she had had a note from Thrmo [?] to say that you had felt rather wretched on Tuesday as the rash was out, I hope by the time you get this you will will [sic] be feeling much better, & that I shall not come home & find you a nervous wreck, I cannot bear to think that the only one of my .children who so far has had the measles should have it whilst I am in foreign lands, so go on having it slightly – once its over it will be a very good thing to have had it, & a very good time to have had it, being summer time & very tactful of you to have got it over before the holidays -

but I do wish I could come over and see you – Daddy and I are leading a very monotonous and absolutely clockwork life, nobody seems very anxious to have much to say to us, so we amuse ourselves the best we can, Bathe in the morning – sleep in the afternoon, wander round the golfcourse in the [deleted] afternoon [/deleted] [inserted] evening [/inserted] , [inserted] me [/inserted] following Daddy who hits golf balls in every direction, curses and swears because they are not perfect, & a small Poruguese[sic] caddie about the size of Norman (& looking rather like Norman as to size and figure, especially as his clothes are much the same colour & style as Ns old grey pyjamas) manages to find all the balls in the most amazing way – then we come home eat our dinner and go to bed & so we go on day after day, Daddy goes in to Lisbon every morning to see if there is anything doing, we are out here trying to get an order for two sloops & I gather Daddy will be terribly surprised if he gets it, but he dare not go as there is just a chance that he might, a very very remote one, so here we sit & as I said before nobody wants us – there is one other English couple in the Hotel, a baronet and his wife, very affectionate and rather haughty, she wears an eyeglass & smokes cigars, they represent he aristocracy, we are in the middle class, & the next middle class down is represented by a Scotch couple from Glasgow, who are very Scotch and very talkative, he is [sic] great ideas as to how wives should behave to their husbands they do not coincide with mine at all; we see almost too

much of them, then there's an Austrian, 2 Danes, 6 Portuguese & one or two other oddments I don't quite know what they are, but as you can see conversation is rather restricted, unfortunately I made friends with the Portuguese last night, & I dare not go out & sit on the Terrace today because I shall have to go on trying to make conversation with them, & its a terrible effort.
The sea is lovely here I generally have a sun bath before & after my bathe, but my skin has got so tickly in spite of masses of olive oil rubbed in until I feel like a sardine, that I contented myself with only bathing this morning, you can spend as much of the day as you like in a bathing dress of the briefest description, the Scotchman here was telling me that you can never be quite sure [inserted] in foreign parts [/inserted] what does constitute indecent behaviour, that a friend of his somewhere in Italy went down to the beach in shorts and he was had up by a policeman for not being properly dressed & he had to stand under the eye of the policeman whilst his friend went up to his hotel & fetched his trousers & then he had to change then and there under the eye of the policeman, the Scotchman swears that here were people sunbathing [inserted] in scanty bathing dress [/inserted] all round him which I find hard to believe – but its a pity you can't come here & sun bathe, you'd be a lovely colour.
I gather from Elizabeth that Sol is doing his best to get on with Julian, so far neither has eaten the other & so I hope all is well – is there any chance of your being sent home when you are out of quarantine for measles? We don't know when we shall be home, at present Daddy seems to think we might get away about July 18th which would get us home about July 22, but

Sunday
THE ELMS,
42, PEAR TREE AVENUE,
BITTERNE,
SOUTHAMPTON.
Dearest David,
no news except that it looks as if the weather is going to change which won't be so nice.
We made the most of the day yesterday and went off to Park Beach, we being Eliza, Walter & me, it was lovely but I felt “Oh dear I can't enjoy this enough it will be so long before we have any petrol to come again”, so like my [indecipherable word] nature, I feel you will say, not to make the most of the moment and enjoy it.
Eliza bathed, & Walter tickled her toes and insulted her in every possible way he could think of – Today she is going off to Basingstoke to stay
[page break]
the night with the Maloney's [sic] as Brian is down for the night., Mrs M wasnt very forthcoming about it as she already has 7 people in the house & Marie is inclined to become hysterical, but Brian said they could put up more beds in the drawing room, so I suppose Mrs M has done so.
Walter is going to drive her as far as the gate and leave her there & to save his fare & make the journey worth while I am to be left at Winchester on the way to have tea with my sisters – so he will feel he is really driving me and not Elizabeth, do you follow!
Hugh turned up last night, looking very grim and depressed, the Admiralty has told him to stay where he is, & he
[page break]
is becoming a war profiteer, & he longs to be in the navy, we all tried to tell him how lucky he was, but he was terribly sad & wanting to be in the Navy. -
It was so hot and stuffy so we all sat in black darkness so as to have the windows open, until an Air Warden banged on the front door & told us a light was showing upstairs, it was Daddy's dressing room light, where he was reading in bed
[underlined] Later [/underlined]
I am just going to post this, having just come back from tea with Nettie & Dorothy, who were both very well, Nettie was much better than when we were last up there. The traffic on the roads was very bad indeed, like bank holiday, everyone out for their last Sunday jaunt – Walter thinks we ought to be able to run the car on some sort of [word deleted] gas, I do hope so.
Winchester is also lucky in having cinema's [sic], Norman will insist on coming home now – I think -
very much love from us all
& especially
Mummy.

Dearest David
We have been over to see your parents-in-law elect, & we like them [underlined] very [/underlined] much I only hope they liked us as much as we did them – we felt completely happy with them, as if we had known them for a long time, I think you are very lucky, (or should I say wise) to have chosen such a nice family – Did you tell me that Mrs Edwards would remind[deleted]ed[/deleted] me a little of Reine in looks? if so I had forgotten, Daddy noticed it also, I liked her so much, & Daddy liked him so much.
We went off this morning feeling rather like an elephant & a chimpanzee, we were shy, & it was a cold & foggy day, & we had to wait for nearly an hour at Guildford station on the way there
[page break]
but once we arrived we felt quite happy & returned home feeling our normal selves. I think their house is very nice.
Have I written to you since we settle into our pink & blue homes[?] at Flintham, we [deleted word] have been there a week & we like it very much, I think we shall be very happy there, & we have got two extra bedrooms for the family, & we can always get more accomadation [sic] at the Crompton Arms.
We have not seen much of Charterhouse this weekend, Norman introduced me to "the Uncle" who explained how the D.F.C. was – I found he was a friend of my brother Geralds, & he used to come to tea at Winchester, perhaps he would have been kinder to you if he'd known, I did not see Mr. Thomson to speak to [missing word] Mr. Russell, I should have liked to as they both wrote such nice letters about you, which I am keeping for you to see –

Dearest David
I feel so neglectful of you, there never seems time to write to anyone except Ian, whom I feel must have a letter as he is so far from home – We settled in quite comfortably & I think we shall be allright[sic] once I become a less inefficient housewife, at present I sympathise with Mollie as I never seem to be quite finished & always on the go, which I should not be if I was a good manager like your wife – Norman is very good & helps me tremendously, I shall hate it when he goes – I have managed to feed him and Daddy for a week [inserted] with my attempts at cooking [/inserted] so I hope I shall go on doing so successfully, Norman is very scornful & said he took it for granted that

event in ones life, one has no idea how thrilled one is going to be with it all, and I feel more an more thrilled at the thought of being a grandmother.
I was very sorry to hear from Joyce that you had got boils again & were going to see another Doctor, I do hope she will be able to do you some good, the man who massaged me back to health swore that they could be cured by some form of electric treatment,
Did I tell you that N. is to have an interview with someone at the War Office to see if he is a suitable person for map reading &

interpretation of photographs – no more news of Ian or Elizabeth -
Thorny is allright [sic], looks rather well on the whole but he is very careworn I think everyone at the office is very tired and on one another's nerves -
Goodbye, I wish there was a chance of you coming over here and seeing us in this place, I suppose you never come to Eastleigh or fly anywhere near here?
Very much love

THE ELMS,
PEAR TREE AVENUE,
BITTERNE,
SOUTHAMPTON.
Dearest Dave
Just a note to send you a line to give you my blessing before [word deleted] I see you, I should like to have written so that you had it today Sunday, but dreadful to relate could not get time to sit down & write you an unhurried letter, I have been using my brain too much this last week & making too many speeches & my poor spirit has had to look after itself with dire results – But I think you know enough of what I feel about religion without
[page break]
my saying any more, how intensely I feel “things spiritual” are the only part of life that really matter, & that that connection is one of the surest indications of the existence of God, that one has to spend all one's life searching for him by developing that [word deleted] spiritual side, I feel the search goes on like a temperature chart you know [illustration of jagged chart] with high marks and very low ones but I always [underlined] hope [/underlined] in the end it reaches a high point, its so hard to be bothered about it, [inserted] especially [/inserted] when one is young & other things are so important – but I cannot tell you how [indecipherable word]
[page break]
2
people who are what I call the really truly good they make me feel at once “The peace of God which passes all understanding” & that to me means they are so sure of what they are after - & knowing that are afraid of nothing, [inserted] living their lives with [/inserted] eternal life as a background to the whole of this one –
I am going to give you another translation of the bible, unless you can think of anything else you want, also Addresses by Lord Haldane, because I think he is [inserted] or was [/inserted] what is a rare combination, [character deleted] a very great intellect & a still greater soul,
[page break]
so many nimble little intellects ate always so busy doing away with the soul, so its a great comfort to find a really large one proving conclusively its [word deleted] [inserted] existence [/inserted] – you may not enjoy them now but I think some day you will enjoy them -
We shall be over by 1.45 tomorrow & will call at Oak Braces, if you are not there go straight on to chapel
This does not seem a very what shall I say affectionate letter, but I expect you would dislike me if I told you how fond I am of you, in spite of the home truths we hurl at one another from time to time, but I am! Your very loving
Mother
[page break]
I thgink probably Alistair & Poga will come to lunch with you at Oak Braces – Daddy, Nannie, Dorothy & myself will arrive after lunch about 1.45. Norman is not coming.

THE ELMS,

BITTERNE,
SOUTHAMPTON.
Dearest David
I was regretting that I had not got your address to write to you just now, & Elizabeth said she had got it, I would have written last night had I known
Thank you for your very nice letter, but you know we have loved “educating” you, you have been our life's hobby, (or a ¼ of our life's hobby) & such a nice hobby, we do enjoy you so much, I don't think [character deleted] there can be a single “happy warrior” anywhere - & I think this time every family feels most desperately being torn apart, & so everyone has the most
[page break]
tremendous sympathy for each other, as the woman who lives in one of the bungalows at the bottom of the garden said 'I didn't know I was so happy'
I do feel so frightfully sorry for you just as you've got to to your finals, & also Ian just as he is starting - but I feel its & everyone but I feel its time I [deleted] started] [/deleted] stopped having a perpetual cold in my nose about it all & pulled myself together
When war was finally declared yesterday morning the whole of the domestic staff had hysterics, I didnt blame poor Dorothy who feels badly
[page break]
about her husband, in fact I didn't blame anyone, how could I, but I gave them a whisky & soda all round, which helped them to recover – we have all been been waiting for air-raid warnings all night & day, I don't like to add none in case one comes at once – Luckily Elizabeth did not have to go back to London last night, as I see they have had several false alarms there today.
Ian turned up Saturday night, he said he could not bear the thought of sharing a closed up sitting room with eight other people, so he came
[page break]
home – He has an idea he might try for the navy as an engineer, there was a note in the paper saying they [inserted] were [/inserted] wanted – I hope he won't just enlist, it does seem such a waste, He & Walter were very comic, they decide to join the Ministry , but were going to see Syd about it, which all sounds silly, but Ian & Walter made it all sound very comic
I enclose a nice letter from Mrs Reason about Anna, who [inserted] continues to be [/inserted] [deleted] seems [/deleted] one of the bright spots of the international situation -
Write & tell me if there is anything I can send on to you in the way of a home comfort, you know how I should love to -
very much love

Dearest David
Just a note to wish you a happy Xmas or perhaps its better expressed as sending you good wishes for Xmas -
We are going over to Peartree on Xmas Eve & staying there until Boxing Day, Its lovely having Frances & Joyce there, Frances squeals of delight over nothing & everything would cheer anyone & we are much looking forward to going, & only hope we shall not make too much work for your wife – It was sad that all the charwomen fell ill, so far I have not been able to find anyone to help in the house, but I hope before long, ie after Xmas to find someone to give a hand, Joyce seems to be managing very well up to date, & she has made the dining room look charming -
[page break]
We have been fog bound for two days, dead still & a thick white curtain of mist most everywhere, nobody stirred last night, Papa stopped at Peartree & brought up his meal from Mrs Malone, he said it was a lovely meal, I don't know whether he really thought so or pretended to to save trouble – Its a very good thing he can put up at Peartree for the night.
Very much love & all good wishes
from
Mummy
Its lovely getting stockings & Xmas [character deleted] Tree Decorations out again, & I felt quite sentimental when 2 children came & sung carol at the door & we made them come in & sing to Frances in the hall.

Dearest David
I feel so stupid, I thought Jan 31st was Monday & that I should be in plenty of time catching the early post today (Saturday) & to my horror I realise that Monday is Feb 1st & your birthday tomorrow & that I have missed the post – so I shall have to be content with a telegram to say many happy returns of the day. I have been racking my brains to think of a present to send you
[page break]
came to the conclusion a book was the only possible one, & then tried to find one with small success, I bought Ann Bridges last. thinking it might be soothing like most of hers, but glancing idly at it I find to my horror that its all about war in Spain & I don't think you will much want to read it, if you have the energy send it back & I will send you another – I always think the loveliest birthday present I ever had was the enormous pink azalea you
[page break]
gave me on my birthday nearly 3 years ago – I never forget it or cease to feel grateful to you for giving it to me, that & the little packet of odd treasures you liked to put under Nannies & my pillows when you were a small boy & thought we deserved a treat, I've got one still – all ready to show Frances for a treat.
Papa as got a cold & a cough he's not very bad, but thank goodness had a slight temperature
[page break]
this morning so stayed at home, to his horror last time he took the temperature it had gone, & now he feels a fraud which is almost worse than having influenza he feels.
I hope your cake arrived safely, & was eatable.
Very much love, I am so glad you have got your old navigator back & that you like the place where you are – very much love from us both
Yours with love
Mummie

Dearest David
I went and saw Joyce and Frances on Wednesday last & enjoyed myself so much, Frances was so lovely & was so kind to me, sat on my lap and gurgled & poked fat fingers into my mouth. And with a rapt & inquisitive expression, I loved her & I don’t know when I’ve had such a pleasant day, & been so happy not since you were all here for your last leave I think – I enjoyed seeing my co-grandmother she’s always so nice and welcoming.
I stayed at the flat for three nights came home on Tuesday after a very comfortable journey in the train and altogether [page break] was very much refreshed.
Elizabeth rang up from Mattingley yesterday, Brian has got the job at Farnborough so now they are looking for some accomodation [sic] round that way, she expects to come into residence here in September.
I enclose a letter from Norman & Ian, it will be nice to have Ian home for a week.
Thorny and I are very well, we are enjoying having Emma wait upon us hand & foot and being proper ladies & gentleman for a space, & its [sic] so soothing to see the silver shine & the furniture polished, & I feel I was living in [page break] a pleasant dream.
[deleted] Joyce [/deleted] I hope Joyce & Frances will manage to get up to you for a bit, I think it would be so good for you all, & I think Joyce is such a remarkably capable young woman that I’m sure she will manage everything allright. [sic]
I see Mr Perkins, Wendy & [deleted] the [/deleted] her new baby yesterday, Wendy was in the throes of taking herself & baby off to two rooms at Odiham, feeling very nervous at the prospect. The baby is just half the size of Frances, very sweet & lively, very pretty, does not [page break] look such a capable woman as Frances.
I don’t think there is any news of any sort from this end – don’t bother to answer, I get news of you when I telephone to Joyce.
Very much love from us both
Mummie

P.S. I have not sent on Ians [sic] letter as I have mislaid it but there is nothing in it except to say that he is coming home for a week on July 25 he hopes.

Dearest Dave
sorry I have been so long in finding out what you wanted – Your man can write to the Magistrates Clerk of the Local Bench where he resides, & asks [sic] for a summons for application for legal custody of the child (Guardianship of Infant Acts 1886 – 1925) . We had a case of an Airman who applied for a summons under that Tuesday - His other course would be to apply to the N.S.P.C.C, who would investigate the case for him talk to his wife, & see if she could be persuaded to mend the error of her ways & look after the child
[page break]
properly, in which case he would simply write to the Inspector – Local Branch (or nearest Branch) of N.S.P.C.C. - I hope that information is of some use to you.
I was home yesterday for an hour or so & when I arrived & a strange man [inserted] in [/inserted] [deleted] outside [/deleted] the garden who turned out to be Hugh Arnold, he looked so well, & seems very happy with his wife & daughter, they live in Camden Street just off Church St. I have got his address, & if when you come up for your jaunt to Buckingham Palace we must see if we could get them to come along – I'm just writing to Joyce so I will continue to chat in her letter -
Love from Mummie

BITTERNE,
SOUTHAMPTON.
Dearest Dave
this is only a note to send you best wishes for Christmas, Joyce said there was a chance of [inserted] your [inserted] spending it at Oxshott, I do hope you will, I rang her up last night & heard that you had moved to Norfolk, also that Mabel was going down to Oxshott for Christmas day, I had a jubilant letter from Mabel rejoicing in the kindness of Mrs Edwards at having asked her. Two letters arrived today, from Ian and Norman, they had met and spent 2 nights together, which was lovely, I was so pleased, I will send on heir letters after Xmas, there are several you have not seen, but I think its best to wait until the Xmas rush is over – Ian thinks he may be moving, Norman is at New Delhi, & when he wrote sounded as
[page break]
if he was not loving it overmuch, but he had only just arrived there, it was the day before his birthday, he was rather cold & had got a sore throat, so I hope by now he has recovered. Ian sounded very pleased to have him. We are all very well William Francis continues to thrive and grow fat, eats and sleeps, & yells from 8 – 10 every evening, Elizabeth is very well, she has been very lucky all through and has got on splendidly, she seems to have found her vocation in life, having and feeding babies I have not seen her so placid, & happy & well for years & years, we had a nurse who kept us all in order for a fortnight but thank goodness she has gone – we have shocked [inserted] & shaken [/inserted] Brambridge House to its depths by hanging the washing out on the veranda [deleted 'h'] & all over the radiators Masters being the only one that sympathises with us, he said in a hoarse whisper in my ear “Coo, it would drive me crackers to live in this house all day”.
[page break]
I do hope you are less cold in Norfolk than you were at Lincoln –
You cannot imagine the amount of reflected glory I get from you[deleted 'r'] in Southampton, my fellow magistrates are always digging me in the ribs & asking me if I am not proud of you, I feel so [word deleted] grateful to you, May Durst (née Blakiston) wrote to me and said she felt proud to think you had once been sick all down her skirt!,
I must stop & go to bed, Thorny is already in bed & snoring – I have not done any Xmas shopping or written to anybody; I feel quite awful, I shall have to content myself with filling William's stocking and ringing up Frances to wish her a happy Xmas, Joyce says she
[page break]
now has a lovely smile, quite different to William's [word deleted] windy grins, I see the great rivalry has started – I'm longing to see Frances again, I must try and get up & see her in January – very much love from us all, I should love to see you & I do hope you get over to Oxshott in Xmas day
very much love

Dearest David
very many happy returns of the day and very much love, not to mention the admiration and pride,[deleted] we [/deleted] I often have to restrain myself from writing a Victorian letter telling you all about our emotions concerning you (our being Pa & myself, no ['t' deleted] allusion to myself as royalty intended), but I refrain as I should only express it so badly that it would sound silly – I had a shock the other day when I thought the ocassion [sic] demanded a moving speech, & with a good deal of embarrassment & diffidence put down in a hurry what I thought, but could not express, on paper & got

the typist to type it out, as usual I put in no stops, the result when she had put them in was so startling, not to say appalling, that I shamefacedly put it in the fire & have returned to my natural instincts not to try and express what I cannot begin to.
I sent you off a cake on Thursday made by Mrs Fudge, who is also going to make William's christening cake, & if no one is able to come to the party, (no good or bad fairies) Mrs Fudge, Elizabeth, myself and Daddy will sit round William and eat it all up wishing him luck with every mouthful. They are [inserted] both [/inserted] going home on Feb 9, I shall be very sorry to part with them – I hope the weather will not turn
[page break]
cold as I'm afraid their commodious modern residence will feel very thin after these steam heated baronial halls. The spare room has made a lovely nursery with a fire in it. I am going back with Elizabeth for 3 days if I can I want to get on and see Frances & Joyce before I come home again but it all depends if I can leave Papa to do for himself for so long -
I think William will object to being dressed up in a [word deleted] christening robe since he lives in a nightgown and I'm sure he will object to the ceremony & a strange parson, I think Frances

was very lucky to have a grandfather in the business.
I enclose a letter from Norman & one from Ian if I can find it
very much love from us all

Dear David
thank you for sending the books back so quickly. It was noble of you, & most unexpected, I never expect anyone to send back any books,
Its a dank, damp, disgusting day, the house is very dull without your family we really miss them very much – Frances would liven anyone up, I hear her grandmother Edwards thinks she [word deleted] be talking, I don't agree because I think there is far too much talk in the world, & I like the sort of conversation Frances indulges in, its so restful you can answer as you like or not, & need not discuss the subject further than you will or wish to. Its a good thing grandmothers do not meet [deleted] more [/deleted] too often to discuss their ideas on the bringing up of their grandchildren the differences of opinion might prove awkward
[page break]
I can imagine myself & Pa Moloney having terrible arguments.
I went to see Eliza, I thought she looked tired, but William looked fine & very friendly.
I have been trying to compose a 21st birthday letter to Norman, but its such a dank cold day that I feel very uninspired -
I am sorry that they have passed you as fit for service anywhere, I think you had better grow another large crop of boils -
We did enjoy your leave, it was really lovely having all three of you, the bicycles look very forlorn in the basement, without any [deleted] riders [/deleted] hope of any riders.
Very much love

Dearest David
I cannot tell you how pleased & thrilled I was when I arrived home last night & Mrs Masters said she had a message for me, but it was a nice one, and when she told me I was so afraid that she had not got it right, & whether it was a bar to the D.S.O or D.F.C & then the miserable telephone went out of order like it always does at Brambridge & so I could not ring anyone up to tell them.
But I have got hold of tonights Echo & its in there alright, and now all I want to know how does one address a D.F.C. & DSO & Bar, are you really now so grand that I merely put D.S.O etc.? I have been going round looking superciliously at everyone all day
[page break]
& thinking to myself, none of you poor things in the road have got a son who is as grand as mine, the result being that I forgot to hoot going over the bridge here & nearly had [word deleted] a collision with a car coming in the opposite direction - . I have managed to control myself all day and have not told anyone, leaving them all to see it for themselves in the Echo
Papa is up in London & the telephone having recovered I have just rung him up to tell him. He was supposed to be staying at the Goring Hotel, but when he got there they said they had to board him out & sent him on to a place in the Cromwell Rd where he found he had to share a room with a stranger & “there was no lavatory accomadation [sic] so he fled to the Aunts, who as usual acted nobly and took him in, although Eric was already
[page break]
staying there . - He was duly suitably impressed & for once did not disown you & explain you were nothing to do with him, which is what he generally does if he thinks any of his family are distinguishing themselves at all.
I enquired about John Francis engagement & if it was official & ought I to write, her name is Warwick & she comes from Wickham where her father has a small business, do you think she is a relative of Rene's, she used to live at Wickham for years, they had a saddlers shop there ?
Will you thank Joyce very much for ringing me up to tell me about you, I was terribly sorry to miss her, I got caught on y way home by Mrs Heseltinne who took me in to have a drink & she

Dearest David
I enclose Ian & [deleted] Davi [/deleted] Norman's letters, if you could find the energy to send them on to Elizabeth I should be grateful, I am hoping to get another letter soon to hear if Ian has got the job he thinks he may have got & I shall be interested, if when you are telephoning to Joyce at any time you will tell (if you what sort of a job it is likely to be. - . Norman sounds very cheerful, but he never seems to have any leave.
I am staying down here for a week with Nettie, & on the face of it, its like a step back five years, the house is so perfect, so well furnished & so clean, & so warm with steam heating & log fires, but I realise after being here 2 days that Mrs Hunt who looks after us is a slightly harried housewife like the rest of, & her unturned out cupboards weigh on her mind most terribly. Its a darling house with square paned windows & a view over the sea, with ground sloping up & on either side, all [deleted] snow [/deleted] deep snow at
[page break]
present. I am wondering how they are getting on at So'ton & if they are snowed up. I called in on my [inserted] way [/inserted] down here & was greeted by Frances with her usual enthusiasm, she is growing up at a terrific rate with any moment [sic] of superfluous energy to spare, I [deleted] her [/deleted] think Joyce has got her hands full, Its a pity we cannot organize a nursery school at the house, but I'm afraid we should find some difficulty in procuring a miss Blake at the moment - .
I was so sorry to hear from Joyce that Ken Lawson is missing – I have always thought a great deal about him since he flew so much with you, & you went through so many “ops” together, I always felt you must have depended so much on one another, & [deleted] afte [/deleted] since sharing so much experience beyond the imagination of us who stay at home; [deleted] I feel [/deleted] you must feel the news very badly -
very much love

Norman will be thrilled to be a godfather if its a boy, so I hope it will be in spite of your urgent desire for a daughter. He has gone up to London today to see if they will take him into the Intelligence Corps for map reading & interpretation of photographs, He went off looking quite mentally deficient having been curled up in a chair reading for the last fortnight & only having had one bath when he mended the shower & [indecipherable word], I

THE ELMS,
42, PEAR TREE AVENUE,
BITTERNE,
SOUTHAMPTON.
Dearest Ian
the above is the correct address for once, I have been here all afternoon hunting round to see what I could find for Elizabeth in case she wants it & she gets her house. She is coming down here next week to see D Mallinson, for two nights, & Norman is also coming home for seven days leave, I have told you all this in another letter, but I wrote one letter to the first address you gave me, & Daddy forwarded on
[page break]
3 letters to that, & I then sent another Canadian [deleted] address [/deleted] letter to the next address, & also wrote, & sent the photographs (which were very dissapointing [sic]) & then this morning I got your letter with the revised address in, so I hope some of the letters will reach you.
I am sorry you are having such a wet & dreary time in Scotland, I think its either lovely, the most wonderful [inserted] air [/inserted], intoxicating colour & views of the hills & water, or else its quite unutterably dreary, the first time Elizabeth & I went up to Oban it was lovely & the next time Daddy & I went, pouring wet all the time & we walked miserably along
[page break]
the roads all the time with the water squelching out of our shoes – I don't wonder you feel peeved at being called back before the others, I think its wretched, & I feel sorry for your pilot, who must be furious at [character deleted] being dragged away from his wife & family
The weather is good in spots here we've had a day's rain which has cheered up the kitchen garden, & provided some more grass for the cows to eat, so we get a little more milk to drink, & now its stormy today -
I have just rung up the Compton
[page break]
Arms Hotel to see if they could take us for a week as I hear they are taking visitors again, Mrs Ings answered herself, she was in bed full of ills & sorrows, & no staff, she said if I rang up in a weeks time she would see if they could take us for 3 days with the possibility of extending the visit for another 3 days if nothing went wrong in the kitchen – so we may go there for a week, so we have a slender hope of a holiday
Mrs Fudge now has a searchlight [word deleted] close to her house & hears there is to be a large gun as well, so she is feeling very gloomy
[page break]
& nightly expects an aeroplane full of bombs to [inserted] fall & [/inserted] explode on her house; mainly I think because she has just had it repainted all over in green & white. The Gibbards have found a house in Chesil Crescent & are looking forward to giving Mr C notice, so I live in hopes of getting their rooms for Eliza though I shall really miss Brian.
I think I had better look around & find some books for you, something that you can leave behind & not bother to return, I'm thinking you will want some
[page break]
clothes forwarded on; you cannot have enough with you to change into when you get soaked, but I'm making up my mind you are going to stay put where you are, which I suppose you are not.
Theres [sic] been a battle going on all afternoon in the neighbourhood & the combatants are now marching past to the sound of bagpipes,
Everyone is well up to date so I hope you are too.
Very much love
