674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Mrs. Valentine,

Salcombe, S. Devon.
Dear Mrs. Valentine,
re: [underlined] 1251404 Warrant Officer J. Valentine [/underlined]
Thank you for your letter of August 2nd. We hope you will try not to worry about your husband who is a Prisoner of War at Stalag Luft 6. Although we have received no official information to this effect, we feel sure that in view of the rapid advance of the Russian Armies this camp will have been transferred to another part of Germany, but you should continue to send letters to your husband addressing them as before and they will, no doubt, be forwarded.
The first clothing parcel you sent this year did not leave this country until the beginning of February and as parcels at that time were taking quite five months to reach their destination, it is unlikely that your husband could have received it by the time he wrote to you in May. We are sorry that so
P.T.O.
[page break]
[inserted] - 2 - [/inserted]
many of your parcels appear not to have reached your husband and hope that it is only due to his transfer from one camp to another and that the parcels will eventually catch him up.
It must have been very disappointing for your husband to receive the skates which were sent through our Stores Department without the boots, but the boots were despatched in your July parcel and we hope they will soon arrive. Once parcels are despatched from the Packing Centres, they are the charge and responsibility of the Postal authorities and we regret that we can do little to trace them.
We certainly advise you not to send the parcel which you now have ready until a further announcement has been made by the Post Office. They have advised that the next of kin of Prisoners should for the time being refrain from sending parcels owing to the dislocation of transport on the continent.
Yours sincerely,
p.p. E.M. THORNTON [initials]
Director.

14th December, 1944.
Mrs. J. Valentire,
Felmersham,
Bottrells Lane,
Chalfont St. Giles,
Bucks.
Dear Mrs. Valentine,
re: [underlined] 1251404 Warrant Officer J. Valentire [/underlined]
Thank you for your letter, which we received on December 12h. The map of the Prisoner of War camps has already been sent to you and although you will not find Stalag 357 marked on it, it is situated at Oerbke near Fallingbostel, which is in square C.4.
We know that the censorship of all letters for R.A.F. Prisoners of War at Stalag Luft 3 delays their delivery very seriously and think that you can quite well try sending letters to your husband to Stalag 357 omitting Stalag Luft 3 from the address. We cannot, of course, guarantee that they will reach him any more quickly, but you may think it worth the attempt.
P.T.O.

Of the other Prisoners of War referred to in your letter, Flight Lieutenant Langlois is interned at Stalag Luft 111, Prisoner of War No. 653.
Sergeant Copley is at the same address, Prisoner of War No. 24364.
The remaining three Airmen were formerly interned at the Camp de Chambaran, Isere, France, but we understand that all Service personnel have recently been removed from this camp and so far, have not learned their new addresses. We think, until these are known, you can safely send letters addressing them to the Camp de Chambaran, C/o, Agence Centrale des Prisonniers de Guerre, Geneva.
We think that we should have the new addresses before long and if you wish, will let you know.
Yours faithfully,

Dulag Luft,
Germany.
We have been informed by the Air Ministry that your husband has been promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer and that is why we have quoted a new Service number, which must be included in the address until a Prisoner of War number is known.
P.T.O.
[page break]
We enclose herewith our circulars PW/99c/43 and PW/100a/42, which give full information about letters and parcels for Prisoners of War.
The special label which we are sending you, together with an advance of 40 clothing coupons, will enable you to despatch a next of kin parcel of clothing and other personal requirements to your husband. Full instructions as to contents and packing are contained in the leaflets P.1 and the Board of Trade regulations for the use of the coupons are printed on the cover of the coupon book. We should advise you to make as full use as you can of the 40 coupons, as we are permitted to issue only 20 with all subsequent labels.
It is not unlikely that after a short stay at Dulag Luft, which is a transit camp, your husband will be moved to a permanent one and when you learn his change of address, we should be glad if you would notify us. We are assured that letters and parcels will be forwarded should he have been transferred before their arrival at Dulag Luft.
We hope it will not be long before you hear from your husband again giving you his permanent camp address and Prisoner of War number.
Yours sincerely,
p.p. E.M. THORNTON [signature]
Director.

Dear Mrs. Layne,
[underlined] Pilot Officer W. Layne. [/underlined]
We thank you for your letter of the 23rd of February, and are glad to know that you have had a recent postcard from your husband.
We think that the Air Ministry's information that your husband was interned at Stalag 357 was most certainly earlier than the date of the postcard your husband wrote. However, we think that until you hear from your husband again, it would be safer to address your letters to Stalag 357, as it is possible that your husband's move to Stalag Luft 111 did not take place.
In any case, letters and parcels
[page break]
would be forwarded, and as Stalag Luft 111 was in a district which was overrun by the Russians, it is certainly safer to send your letters to Stalag 357.
We hope that you will very soon hear from your husband again, and we should be interested to have whatever information he may send you.
Yours sincerely,
p.p. E.M. Thornton. Director. [signature]

Dear Mrs Layne
[underlined] Pilot officer W. Layne [/underlined]
We thank you for your letter of March 3rd and are glad to hear the good news of the birth or your son. We are sending a cable through the International Red Cross Commitee [sic] at Geneva giving this information to your husband and saying that you are both doing well. We are afraid that this cable will take some time in transit and it is quite possible that if you write yourself using an Air-mail Letter card the news will reach him as quickly as by cable.
We hope that you and your son will continue to progress well and it will not be too long before you hear from your husband telling you he has received your news.
Yours sincerely

We thank you for your letter of May 27th, and the coupons you were kind enough to return.
We are afraid that football shorts, shirts and stockings must be sent in a next-of-kin parcel as they [sic] is no special label issued for the purpose of a “sports” parcel. We hope you will find you have enough space to include these in your next parcel to your husband, and we are glad to know that he is not in need of any clothing at the present time.
Yours sincerely,
