Dear Isabel,
When I arrived here a few days ago I sent you and Mother a cablegram each. Please let me know either in letters or by airgraph when you receive each airgraph. I shall try to send some more but they will not interfere with the letter numbering. This is a grand place and I am thoroughly enjoying myself – plenty of marvellous food and comfortable brick huts. Jack, Clem, and I have managed to keep together so we are happy about that. The 3 of us have a pass for this week end so we are going to the address of Cousin Bill which you gave me, this being 36 miles to the south of here. I shall write to him and perhaps see him later as we shall have more similar passes. J. Prentice must be somewhere in this camp and I hope to trace him. We are not doing any flying here but effect to do so soon in accordance with the [deleted] [/deleted] I sent in my 3RD letter, but you should use this address now. I am looking forward to you first letters and you are in my thoughts as much as ever. Regards to the family especially your Mother hoping she continues to progress.
Yours, Andy.

Dear Isabel,
We have been here more than a week now and we are well settled into the routine of the camp. Everybody is naturally looking forward to their first mail which we hope to get in about a fortnight. I have taken a number of photographs which I shall send on as soon as soon as I can get them developed. Jack, Calem, and I had a grand weekend in Jo’burg last weekend for there are plenty very good facilities for the Services. It only takes us an hour by electric train. I managed to find a Presbyterian Church and attended the morning service which I found very stimulating. Jack and I this week on our late pass night spent it in Pretoria, this being another new experience for us. I have written a letter this week (10) telling you much more about these trips. I have not heard from your cousin yet. I asked him to write to me even though he found himself unable to meet me in Jo’burg. I suppose you will be interested to know that Bodo is not with me now but you will find more details of this also in the letter. I am continuing in the best of health and hope you are doing likewise. Could you let me know how Tommy gets on in his exams? I hope he does well. Yours, Andy.

Dear Isabel,
I am glad to be able to tell you that I managed to get a pass last week end and I met your cousin Bill. I was staying at the Hallidays house and on Saturday evening Dr. Halliday helped me to get in touch with Bill in the barracks officers' mess. We arranged that he would collect me on Sunday when I came out of Church. He did so and we went in his big Chevrolet sedan to meet some friends of his and also paid a visit to big military parade held here in honour of Allied Sunday. Unfortunately he had to be back on duty at 1800 so we had only about 6 hours together. However, I hope to see him again before I leave here. Nora's brother expects to move south to Flying School at the end of next week sometime but he does not know yet where he is going. I have received the 3 Flights posted 28/4 and a letter from mother dated 27/4 so I hope there are some more around from you. I have read the ones I have received over and over again. Bill showed me your 1/5 letter to him so congratulations to Tommy. Very interested in the WAAF situation and your calling up.
Yours, Andy.

Dear Isabel,
This is my new address and I shall be there when I next write to you. Jack is going to East London which is a great disappointment to both of us but we hope to meet there later as I shall have to go there to finish my course. At the moment I am entirely on my own for friends. I received your first cable just [deleted] before [/deleted] after I posted last week's airgraph and your second two days ago but, unlike most other boys I have received no more letters so dear knows what has happened to any written between 13/4/42 and 30/4/42. Perhaps they will turn up, I'll keep hoping. Thanks a lot for the cables, so glad to know you are getting my letters and I presume you also meant airgraphs. I spent last week end at the Halliday's in Joburg again but could not contact Bill. On Monday I received a letter from him saying that he had been posted away to Cape Town. I shall keep in contact with him because I hope to be in Cape Town before I leave this country. I met a Scots couple with a little girl of 12 in Pretoria two nights ago and accepted an invitation to spend last night with them. Very quiet but quite enjoyable. I passed my exams here this week successfully. I continue to keep well and was glad to hear you are doing likewise.
Yours, Andy.

Dear Isabel,
Once again I have to report with a little disappointment that there are no letters from you this week. I know you will have written plenty but they have either been lost or are still on the way. Despite this I have managed to write a number of pages in my weekly letter this week. Life here continues to be very interesting and very enjoyable except for a day or two when I could hardly eat because I had a tooth taken out. Fortunately it does not alter my appearance as it is towards the back but I did not enjoy the experience even though it was painless. I have not been out of camp this week but mainly studying, reading and writing. There is a good camp library and I am keeping at my writing though the time available is getting shorter as the studying increases. There is a good little camp cinema which gives shows twice a week on Wednesdays & Sundays at the modest price of 6' and bring your own cushions. I have now changed into another hut next door beside Harold Armstrong and Jerry Bolter my class mates. Missing you as much as ever.
Yours Andy.

Dear Isabel,
Received your 26, 27, 28, 20 letters this week but 24 and 25 are still missing, therefore I am only vaguely aware of your illness at the end of April. Since your cablegrams were sent later I take it that you are now completely recovered. It seems other people also need to look after themselves! Thanks a million for the letters - they were as good as ever which means they are perfect. I only hope mine give you half as much joy. Glad to hear you have made contact with [deleted] the [/deleted] my hero's Movement and hope that it has impressed you. Sorry to hear your calling up is no nearer and I suggest when it does a cablegram to let me know would be appreciated but I leave it to you. Surprised to hear of T. B. J. at Dufftown. I dont get it! Relieved you came to correct decision about keeping me informed of situation at 40 Bradda even though discouraging - but only really sorry for Nora - trust you will help her if she needs it. Have sent off parcel to Mother, included are [indecipherable word] stockings for you and part of chocolate, trust this is O.K.
Have sent 16 and 17 letters this past week, 16 only enclosure being a short story which I hope reaches you. Everything going on well here. Yours, Andy.

Dear Isabel,
This has been another big week for mail Nos 21, 25, 30, 33, your cable, 2 sets of papers and letter from Mother with N-L. 31 and 32 should be here soon so now only 24 is missing. I have sent an airgraph to Rita Knop with thanks praise and a little criticism. I hardly mentioned my own experiences but said you could supply what you thought fit. Thanks for very capable and perfect handling of Ada and N-L incident. Delighted to let Jimmy get credit (if any.) I still believe he’ll turn up. As far as I am concerned, I prefer you to do as you have done – Watch and say nothing as credit for success due to committee. In my [deleted] letter [/deleted] airgraph to Mother this week (quote) “now had four letters from Isabel but only 2 from fellows who usually write to me so I hope you are passing [underlined] all [/underlined] letters for me to Isabel [underlined] without delay.” [/underlined] (unquote). I hope this will help you. Continue to send cuttings with your letters. If you like sending cables as you say, suggest you acknowledge my letter No 16 with cable. E.F.M. cables [underlined] do [/underlined] have date of dispatch. Shall await developments re Murdo McLeod. [deleted] Presume he is a pilot so by this time he is probably in Rhodesia. [/deleted] Photo of Bill and me already sent, will send another one soon. Everything going along O.K here. Flying getting more frequent but still not a look in on the bike.
Yours, Andy.

Dear Aunt Mary and
Aunt Margaret,
Isabel has been telling me about the thoughtful and very much appreciated wedding present you have given us and suggested I should drop you note to let you know how the boys in RAF blue are getting on.
Well I’m well and fit and thoroughly enjoying myself I am stationed down in Cambridgeshire near Ely and we can see the famous cathedral very clearly for it stands out as a landmark all around this flat country. I haven’t been

there yet but I’ll get around to it sometime.
I am flying I a big 4 – engined plane doing night trips over enemy territory and, though it is hardly what I’d choose for a pastime, I find it exhilarating in a certain measure. I think this is mainly due to the excellent co-operation and infectious high spirits of our crew. There are 7 of us a Welshman, 2 Canadians, 2 Englishman, and 2 Glasgow boys. We all live together in the same billet and eat together and the sense of comradeship is a great help in the air. it doesn’t banish fear but it reduces it to a low minimum.
[page break]

I personally am greatly sustained by the love and kindness I receive from Isabel. I miss her a good deal but she writes me wonderful letters and we are always looking forward to my next leave when we can be together. I am continually grateful for having a wife who is everything I could desire.
I trust everything on the Home Front is under control as far as you are concerned though I’ve no doubt you’ll be as glad as I will to see the end.
Yours sincerely
Andy.

Dear Mr Williamson,
Since last writing I have done my conversion to 4 engined bombers and have for the last three weeks been on an Ops Squadron near Ely in Cambridgeshire. I have done my first few ops and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There is not the tension about life here that I had expected. It is not a hard life by any means, but we do more flying than ever now (for we have our kite to look after) and it is tiring work. We haven’t run into any serious trouble but there is a happy sense of comradeship in the crew and on Ops the the patter over the intercom is bright, amusing, and has a very reassuring effect. We all live eat and sleep together so we just have to get on well. My Flight Engineer is a Glasgow fellow from Linthouse so I’ll have company to travel to and from

leaves.
I am coming home on leave next Wednesday (27th) for 6 days.
Isabel has now been discharged from the Waaf [sic] for medical reasons. Her aunt died some months ago so Isabel is now looking after her Uncle and his little boy at Bishopbriggs. I shall be going there on leave and you should address your letters there in future. Isabel is not out much these days so I might not manage in to see you this time when on leave but I’ll make a point of phoning you and I’ll tell you how things are. Has T.McL. gone out into the world yet? And how is HJB enjoying RAF life now.
Hope you and the family are keeping well. And enjoying Glasgow’s Fair attractions?!
Yours
Andy
