PAPUAN CAMPAIGN IN FINAL STAGES
Last Japs. Face Destruction
Messages from General MacArthur’s headquarters yesterday announced that the campaign in Papua is now in its final stages, with the remnants of the Japanese forces at Sananada facing almost certain destruction, and that Allied bombers are striking at an enemy convoy approaching Lae, the Japanese New Guinea base.
[map depicting the Allied Base in New Guinea/Papua and the proximity to the tip of Australia]
One of the main objects of the campaign in Papua was the elimination of 15,000 Japanese troops under General Horii. With the complete enveloping of Sananada this is practically accomplished and with their destruction Papua will be entirely cleared of the enemy.
In addition, several thousand enemy reinforcements have been drowned or killed in attempts to land.
(Sananada is as well fortified as Gona and Buna and more difficult to approach. At Gona and Buna the Japanese, although outnumbered and cut off from sea aid by Allied predominance in the air, and weakened by disease, defended these positions almost to the last man. That such tenacious troops holding such defensively strong positions should be worn down and overwhelmed, speaks highly not only of the courage and skill of the United States and Australian troops but also of the care and thoroughness with which General MacArthur’s lieutenants prepared and organised the counter-attack.
Bombers Pounding Convoy
Allied aircraft are reported to be repeatedly attacking Japanese transports and escorting warships, totalling ten vessels, attempting to reinforce Lae.
Two large transports laden with troops were sunk with all on board during a night attack, and a 500-pound bomb scored a direct hit on another troopship, which was left in a severely damaged condition. Another was disabled and later sank.
A large number of enemy planes are protecting the convoy, and so far 18 have been shot down and five badly damaged.
The attack is continuing.
[underlined] TUNISIA [/underlined]
ITALIANS ROUTED IN ATTACK
Bad weather has stopped operations on the main fronts.
A French camel corps attacked a position held by 500 Italians and killed or captured 250 of them. The rest fled.
Tunis and Sfax Raided
Tunis was raided by medium and heavy bombers and the electric power station and shipping in the harbour were hit. Three direct hits completely destroyed the power house in a raid on Sfax.
Bomber Command aircraft raided targets in the Ruhr during Thursday night. All planes returned safely.

OUTPOST CAPTURED AFTER THREE DAYS’ BATTLE
Fighting French forces have captured an outpost 65 miles east of Mazouk after three days of land and air battles.
Large supplies and numbers of troops are moving into forward positions for the coming attack against the Axis forces.
AIR ATTACKS ON TRANSPORTS
R.A.F. fighters and bombers made heavy attacks on transports 40 miles from Tripoli. Fighter-bombers made low level attacks on enemy transports on the coastal road and machine-gunned lorries loaded with troops and stores. At least one Me.109 was destroyed and others damaged in air battles.
Palermo Raided
A force of United States bombers attacked Palermo harbour and scored hits on dock installations. In raids on Tunis and Sousse hits were scored on railways and large fires were started at Sousse, where a ship was hit.
DAY RAIDERS OVER BRITAIN
Seven German planes attacked towns on the south-west British coast yesterday afternoon. Bombs were dropped causing some damage and casualties.
The raiders were finally chased out to sea by four Spitfires.
Berlin claims that a new bomb-proof submarine base has been built near Brest.
TWIN DON THRUST CONTINUES
GERMANS IN RETREAT AT ALL POINTS
The Russians are continuing their two-pronged thrust down the lower Don with the Russian armies converging from 80 to 40 miles apart in one day.
Soviet forces are closely pursuing the Germans on the north bank, while on the north bank the Red Army has smashed all attempts to hold up their advance, with Russian tanks over-running German infantry positions and inflicting very heavy losses.
At Nikolyskaya, on the north bank, Soviet forces battered back the Germans with tanks and heavy artillery, and at another point south of the Don, said to be only 70 miles from Rostov, the enemy were completely routed. South-west of Velikie-Luki, the Germans made several fruitless attacks against the Russians.
40 Places Recaptured
Moscow later claimed that in the northern Caucasus the German are now in full retreat and that over 40 more places have been recaptured. The Germans are setting fire to villages and blowing up bridges as they retire.
One tank unit alone killed more than 500 officers and men, and a party of “tommy” gunners killed another 100.
Berlin Admits Reverses
Berlin admitted yesterday that the German armies in Russia were on the defensive on all fronts, and a German radio broadcast explained to the people that their troops were being slowly withdrawn from their present positions in order to shorten their line.
(London military observers note that the Russian offensive may soon, by effectively threatening Rostov, place the Germans in the Caucasus in a critical position.)
ROOSEVELT’S SPEECH PRAISED
President Roosevet’s [sic] address to Congress received endorsement from the entire national press yesterday, states a London message.
The Times describes the speech as one which “breathed a high sense of purpose without once losing the characteristic sense of realities.”
All the morning papers praised the President for a full and frank statement of the war on all fronts.
FAMOUS SUBMARINE RETURNS
A famous British submarine, the Thresher, has returned to a home port after completing thirteen patrols in 18 months. The vessel has two V.C.s and a D.S.O. among the crew.
During the long spell at sea the submarine journeyed near 40,000 miles and sank eleven Axis merchant ships and four supply ships.
RUSSIA-BOUND CONVOY ATTACK BEATEN OFF
The British Admiralty announced yesterday that on December 31 naval vessels escorting a large convoy to Russia were attacked by an enemy force off northern Norway. The British force, comprised a number of destroyers while the German units included one pocket battleship, a large cruiser and several destroyers.
Two Hours Fight
The fight lasted for more than two hours in semi-darkness and falling snow. The destroyers had frustrated four enemy attacks on the convoy when a large force of heavier British ships arrived and the enemy fled.
Two German vessels were sunk or badly damaged and two British ships suffered damage and casualties. The convoy arrived safely at a Russian port without loss or damage carrying large supplies of war material.
The German radio admitted that the U-boats are facing grave difficulties against Allied shipping and that the date was distant when ships sunk by U-boats could not be replaced.
ODDS AND ENDS
CLEARING THE AIR
Recently Stalin gave a banquet for the Red Army general staff and Communist party leaders.
When he arrived, he took his seat on the dais and, raising a glass of vodka, said, “Comrades, I now give a toast to the great Stalin . . . to the wonderful Stalin . . . to Stalin the leader of Russia’s warriors. And I sincerely hope that this is the last I will hear about him at this affair.”
[symbol] Suggested sign for Hitler’s Russia front: “Opened by Mistake.”
SHOCK
A patriotic lady who sent out the following invitation to an officer at a nearby army post: “Mr. and Mrs. Browne request the pleasure of Captain Green’s company at dinner,” was dismayed at the reply she received.
“With the exception of five men on leave and three on sick list,” the reply read, “Captain Green’s company accept with pleasure your invitation to dinner.”
[symbol] “Too bad. He was a window cleaner and stepped back to admire his work.”
TRUTHFUL
The Colonel had insisted to his Negro cook that the turkey be a domestic, corn-fed bird, no wild fowl. He cut into a beautiful done-to-perfection bird, frowned, cut again, then sent for Sam.
“Didn’t I tell you I wanted a domestic turkey?” he thundered. “Yah, suh, dat’s a domestic, corn-fed fowl.”
“What about this shot I’m finding?”
Sam shuffled from one foot to the other. “Dat shot, Colonel suh, were meant fo’ me.”
[symbol] “He was so lit up the air-raid warden had to take him home under an umbrella.”
PREPAREDNESS
“The Fall of a Woman” will be the subject for Sunday evening at the First Baptist Church. Real facts and truths will be revealed. The eleven fans have been reconditioned and will be used to cool the building. – From the COMMERCE (Texas) JOURNAL.

Reaping the Whirlwind
The power of the Royal Air Force has been manifested over the week-end in the greatest air assault ever launched. Attacks on Friday night upon munition works in the Paris suburbs were on a large scale and enormous damage is admitted by the Vichy reports. They were, however, eclipsed by Saturday night’s battering of the factories in the Ruhr and the Rhineland. Over a thousand bombers were employed and the attack makes even the raids on Rostock and Lübeck seem almost minor affairs. The attack was mainly on Cologne. It lasted only an hour and a half, but during that time British aircraft bombed their objectives at intervals of only six seconds. It gives some idea of the scale of the operation to remember that in the biggest of the raids upon Great Britain in 1940 and 1941 the Germans never used more than six hundred aeroplanes; and these, though they had to fly a much shorter distance, carried a much smaller bomb load than the bigger and more modern machines now used by the R.A.F.
The whole attack was most skilfully planned. While the bombers were on their way to Germany large numbers of other bombers and fighters attacked the aerodromes from which night fighters might have been sent to intercept the raiding force on the way out and back. They brought down several enemy aeroplanes, and it was probably due in great measure to them that, in spite of the moonlit night, the losses were light in comparison with the weight of the attack. Great numbers of British aircraft have been sent, and will continue to be sent, to Russia to reinforce our allies in their great struggle on the Eastern front. The R.A.F. in the Middle East has been and is still being steadily increased. Spitfires which have recently arrived are now taking part in the fighting over the Western desert. In spite of all this dispersal, the force of the blows which can be delivered from home bases has grown in a fashion which must inspire trepidation among those against whom they are directed. And this is only the beginning. With the cooperation of American airmen the attacks upon German factories, ports, and railways during the coming summer and autumn will become devastating. MR. CHURCHILL in his congratulations to Bomber Command described the operations of Saturday night as “the herald of “what Germany will receive, city by city, “from now on.”
A German [italics] communiqué [/italics] describes the attack upon Cologne merely as “a terror “raid,” and belittles its effects in much the same way as it belittled the damage done at Rostock and Lübeck. It is safe to say that when the full reports are received the destruction done in Cologne will be found to have been on an even greater scale. The Germans are now learning in their own homes and their own cities, something of the loss and suffering which they have inflicted upon the civilian populations of other lands. Ever since they loosed war upon the world two and a half years ago they have boasted of the havoc wrought by the Luftwaffe and of the terror it inspired. They have gloated over what they did to Warsaw, Rotterdam, and Belgrade. They even made films of some of their greatest crimes for the delectation of patriotic Germans and as a warning to other nations to be careful not to incur the displeasure of the master race. It was part of German diplomacy abroad to exhibit such films in order to terrorize neutral countries into compliance with every German demand. HITLER himself threatened that the cities of England would be “wiped out” if the British people continued to stand up to him. By a long series of terror raids he did his best to carry out his threat, and there is hardly a city in Great Britain which does not bear the marks of his savagery. Now that the striking power is passing from the Luftwaffe to the R.A.F. Germany will begin to realize the folly she committed in entrusting her destinies to him and his comrades in crime.
“REPRISAL” RAID ON CANTERBURY
CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS DESTROYED
The streets of Canterbury were strewn with rubble and filled with fire pumps, many of which were brought from surrounding districts, yesterday after the Germans had made what they described as a “reprisal” raid on Sunday night.
Some 50 enemy aircraft flew overland, about half that number attacking the city. Three were shot down, one over the coast and two over their own aerodromes.
Among the casualties were the town clerk and his wife, who were trapped in their damaged house. Both were extricated, but the town clerk died on the way to hospital, where his wife now lies injured.
The fire services and Civil Defence, helped by neighbouring districts, worked magnificently and the fires were soon under control. Fire caused considerable destruction in a shopping centre and residential property suffered in the indiscriminate bombing. Two churches, a newspaper office, and two schools were among the buildings destroyed.
The Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs. Temple, who were in Canterbury during the raid, are safe. The Archbishop visited people in the town yesterday and inspected the damage.
The Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security report yesterday morning said:-
Shortly after midnight enemy aircraft made a raid on a town in south-eastern England. Most of the damage caused was in a shopping and residential district, in which some fires were started. A number of casualties have been reported.
Three raiders were destroyed during the night, one off our coast and two over enemy aerodromes in occupied territory.

[underlined] A P.O.Ws. MEMORIES [/underlined]
Battle Order:
Briefing room preparations.
The date 12/9/44 – the target FRANKFURT.
398 Lancasters detailed to bomg [sic]
The central station rail lines – last major attack on the war of Frankfurt.
This was our nineteenth operation: there was a philosophy, often proved to be unreliable, which said that on your first operation there was a 1 in 20 possibility of being shot down and after five operations that became a 1in 5 chance, increasing to a 1 in 2 chances after your 10th operation.
Seventeen aircraft lost that night – of the 124 aircrew shot down there were only 10 survivors and five came from our crew.
I’ve already described out being shot down, and the eight days we spent trying to walk out of Germany before being caught on the
[Page Break]
outskirts of Rastatt, north of the Rhine.
On the third day we were moved to a small village jail where we met up with three other P.O.Ws. and eventually moved to Dulag Luft the Luftwaffe’s interrogation centre for airborne prisoners. We only spent two or three days there for Arnheim to take place and there was an influx of prisoners. We were put aboard a train – a corridor train with six to each compartment and were each issued with a Red Cross Food Parcel: here we had met up with two other members of our crew, who had been told we had been killed. Three were still missing and our concen[sic ]was foir[sic] our Rear Gunner who was a Jews, but when we arrived at our Prison Camp “Spag” was in the crowd waiting to greet the new entrants. We learned later that our Pilot and Mid-upper Gunner had been killed.
The train journey was over a few days, sometimes being laid up in sidings for hours at a time. Eventually we arrived at our camp. Stalag Luft VII (Banau) which the Luftwaffe had somewhat
[Page Break]
optimistically built in the middle of the Eastern Front in Silesia. The camp opened in June 1944 but was not yet finished when we arrived; indeed for the first few weeks we slept in small huts (kennels) sleeping six men. There was no electricity and only one water pump for over 800 men. At the end of July 36 POWs were transferred in from the Stalag 383, bringing with them their secret radio, and news of the war’s progress was distributed round the camp each night. Although the Germans new the radio existed they were never able to find it.
The new camp was built in an adjacent compound; the Germans realised that there were a number of POWs that there were a number of POWs that were Army – almost certainly from Arnheim - and the Germans decided that they should work, so they were taken to the new compound and made to help with the construction of the new huts, not realising their work was being sabotaged. The following day another group of men dressed in Army uniform took their places and continued to work in the new compound; at the end of the day when they were leaving to return to the kennel compound
[Page Break]
they slammed the door of the hut on which they had bene working and the roof fell in, No one worked after that!
Another ploy was to disrupt the morning and evening parades by filling in blank files. This resulted in a count of more prisoners than were actually in the camp.
The new compound contained eight barrack blocks, each of fourteen rooms – 12 PoWs to a room, two tiered bunks, a table chairs and a stove. This was luxury. Two ablution blocks, a cookhouse and a large hall with a stage. It was surrounded by a double barbed wire fence sixteen feet high with armed guard towers on every side.

On Friday 27th September 1940, the Luftwaffe carried out extensive daylight raids over London, Bristol and Southern Counties.
Messerschmitt ME 110’s of Erprobungsgruppe 210 attacked the small aircraft factory of Parnall’s at Yate. These were bomb carrying 110’s escorted by fighter 110’s of ZG76.
On their return flight some of the 110’s were intercepted by Hurricanes of 504 and 56 Sqdns, and at approximately 12 midday, one of the bomb carrying 110’s force landed at The Beeches, Preston Hill, Avenue Minster Dorset, as a result of damage sustained.
The aircraft was a “write off” and the crew of two were captured. Feldwebel EBNER sustained slight wounds and Gefreiter ZWICK had severe wounds. The aircraft was coded S9 + DK indicating that it was from the second Staffel of Erprobungsgruppe (experimental group of bomb carrying aircraft) 210; and the werke (Factory) number was 4270. The type was ME110D.
The Luftwaffe lost a total of 39 aircraft on this particular day.
