431 Squadron crashed Lancaster
Description
An account of the resource
A Lancaster that has landed with its wheels up. From information kindly supplied by the donor. 'This picture shows how my tour of ops ended. My tour started with a crash when I went on my 2nd dickey trip & the crew brought back a 500lb bomb that exploded when the a/c landed. The two gunners were killed the remaining crew were literally blown out of the a/c.
The Lancaster shown in the picture was brand new and I had to try landing it on one wheel. We were on the bombing run attacking Duisberg and we were fired on by a Halifax crew. There was considerable damage to the port side and our a/c lost it's hydraulic fluid. When the Halifax crew returned from their trip, they claimed they had shot down an unidentified 'German night fighter'. I think they sent the gunners on an aircraft recognition course!!'

Title
A name given to the resource
44 Squadron and the Wesserling Raid 21/22 June 1944
Description
An account of the resource
Six page document courtesy of the late Allen White - 44 Squadron Historian. Reproduces narratives from three 44 Squadron crews involved in the operation. Overall the operation lost 37 crews from 120 launched against Wesserling oil refinery near Cologne. 44 Squadron dispatched 16 aircraft of which 6 were lost. Germans successfully interfered with Oboe of pathfinder Mosquito aircraft and the operation disintegrated. First narrative recounts experience of Squadron Leader Cockbain who lost control of his aircraft after attack by night fighter. Some crew baled out before he regained control and after a struggle successfully returned to base. Second narrative recounts experience of Cockbain's flight engineer, Walter Faraday. Reports on damage and that rear gunner is stuck in malfunctioned turret. Describes recovery to base and feelings next day. Final account from this crew is from the mid upper gunner Albert Bracegirdle who baled out and awoke in a forest. After evading he hands himself in due to injury and the fact he is deep in Germany. He notes that two other squadrons on the operation lost six crews. He notes that plan was standard 5 Group low level marking technique but bomb on H2S if no markers. However operation bore the brunt of successful night fighter action. An account of the loss of Pilot Officer R Woods aircraft is given by W/O A Sergeant Royal Australian Air Force. This was their second operation and they were hit by night fighter and had to bale out. Recounts crew struggling with parachutes while others are injured or dead. Three crew members survived and were caught the next day. The final account of the operation is from Sergeant F Preston, one of the only three crew to survive from Pilot Officer J W Sholtz crew. He recounts he was blown clear after the aircraft exploded and opened his parachute and landing with some small injuries. He then headed for southern France. The final account is of Ric Green a navigator on 44 Squadron who did not fly on the attack but reported his feelings the next morning on finding so many crews missing from the previous night. There follows a role of honour for six crews lost on the operation. Notes that the first crew on the list, Flying Officer R Wood Royal New Zealand Air Force was the only Bomber Command crew lost that contained members of all three commonwealth air forces plus a representative from the United States Army Air Force.

A Carpenter’s Bungalow with a Military Past
Built by and for the tradesmen of Bankview, this house is a 551 square foot bungalow that has undergone extensive transformation. Today, all that remains of the original house is the cedar siding and the defunct radiant gas fireplace with porcelain bricks.
The bungalow’s first resident was Alex Dunbar, a carpenter who likely built the house. In 1914, Harold Lewis a bricklayer moved in followed by WM Cowie who was in active service during World War I. The house remained vacant throughout the Great War and what became of Mr. Cowie is a mystery. Mr Perry C Allard was a trucker with the CPR and lived in the house for two years until William H Siborne bought it in 1920.
During World War II, the Petts family, Charlotte Maria and John Thomas, lived in this bungalow, likely with their two younger sons, John Russell and Henry Neville. However, this once happy home tells a sad tale of a double tragedy.
On 28 December 1941, Flight Sergeant John Russell Petts, 138th Squadron RCAF, was killed on an operation of special duties at the age of only 21. Flying a Whitley V, he crashed on return to the base. On 26 May 1943, his elder brother, Flying Officer Henry Neville Petts, 100th Squadron, RCAF, suffered a similar fate at age 25. Henry’s Lancaster III was hit by flak and crashed near Vlodrop (Limburg), a village on the Dutch-German border. Separated in death as seldom in life, Russell is buried in England, and Neville in the Netherlands.
Although short on closet space, the home suits the current owners and their two cats well. With a painting studio in the basement ( [blank] ), and a great back deck for parties with neighbors [sic], this carpenter’s bungalow still stands proud on 16 A Street in Bankview.
