'Johnny' was tough as a baby
FOUR STAGES in the life of Wing-Commander J.E. ("Johnny") Johnson, treble D.S.O., double D.F.C., now Britain's top fighter ace with a score of 35 kills. Here is picture No. 1 from the Johnson family album. It was taken in July 1915. "Johnny" already showed signs of the fight[missing letters]g spirit for, says his mother, "at the age of four months [missing letter]e was a tough baby." The future 400 miles per hour flier c[missing letters]d not even crawl a yard in an hour then. When he brou[missing letters]t his score up to 35 recently, Johnson saved the life of one of his pilots, Flight-Lieutenant Copeland. [underlined] The funeral of the English airmen tragically killed in Thyon and Le Bouveret [/underlined]
The funeral of 14 English airmen tragically killed at Le Bouveret and Alpes de Thyon have been celebrated on Thursday[?] 16.30 hours in Vevey British Graveyard. Followed then by a manifestation of compassion in which Vevey’s people have taken part, some lovely wreaths had been sent from every part of Switzerland from all British corporations. It [sic] Of note were those from the British Legation in Berne, Royal Air Force, and the British Legion, English interned people, Greek, Belgian, Dutch, Yugoslavian colonies, from the United States, from Palestinians – S.E., the minster of Great Britain in Berne Sir Clifford Norton, Air Commodore West, Air attache, allied military attaches, the representatives of several legations from several consulates attended; so did Major Boissier, a representative of H.Q., the legations of interned English airmen of La France Combattante, Polish people, Greeks, Hindu, delegations of Swiss airmen, Aga Khan, M.E. Denereaz, Vevey syndic, etc. The crowd was extensive, kept in check by a good body of those responsible for order.
The official suite left Saint Martin’s terrace at 16.20 hours in order to get to the English graveyard where two graves had been dug out for the 14 coffins. A brass band played the Funeral March by Beethoven. Then a religious service was held by Reverends Legg from Vevey, Maywood from Clarens, Middletown from Lausanne and Vicar Kurfurst from Vevey who had already held one twenty five years ago when the first interned British interned were buried in this graveyard. After “God Save the King”, some English and Swiss soldiers lowered the coffins down the grave; blessing and absolution were given. H.E.M. Clifford Norton put the British colours wreaths down the grave, Air Commodore West another, followed by allied military attaches’ wreathes and United States. The brass band beat the tattoo and sounded the reveille. Regular salvoes were shot and official guests withdrew whereas the impressed crowd was queuing up along the graves.

[underlined] Two British Four-Engined Bombers Crash into Valaisan Mountains. [/underlined]
To inform our readers quickly about the events that occurred in the night of Monday, we stuck up the following news on Tuesday morning in Station Avenue on Publicitas offices shop windows:
[underlined] On the slopes of Mount Grammont [/underlined]
The competent territorial district public relation chief announces:-
In the night of July 12th at 00.55 hours an English four-engined plane crashed on the slopes of Mount Grammont at about 500 metres south of Bouveret, 900 metres up. A big detonation was heard and high flames rose up from the plane. The Military major of the district and the chief of the fire brigade got to the place where it could be found at 5 o’clock am. 5 Airmen’s corpses. Two others have not been found yet.
[underlined] On the ridges of Thyon [/underlined]
Sion, during the night of Monday 12/13th July knew a few thrilling moments. For more that[sic] one hour and a half between midnight and 1. am, a lot of British bomber squadrons flew over Berne and Valaisan Alps by using a route right over the town. The flow of the heavy and mighty four-engined machines lasted unendingly at relatively low altitude judging by the intensity of the noise of the propellers.
The time it lasted to fly over our sky is the longest ever. A sultry and threatening atmosphere hung over the town. Many shutters could be seen opening. Observers scanning the sky vainly. Between the clouds rather low, a few stars sparkled now and then, but no planes could be seen. Besides, in order to get their route, several squadrons sent up yellow and red flares. They burst in the same way as short flashes of lightning. Near the end of their passage, when the noise began to fade away, in the dark sky another sound of planes was suddenly heard. It was flying lower than the others and its engine had characteristic misfires. At the very time when this plane flew over Thyon ridges, all of a sudden an enormous yellow glimmer lit up the sky. At the same time an explosion reflected back in the echoes of the valley.
The plane had crashed into a mountain and exploded. Then another reddish glimmer rose up with a second explosion. This tragic drama concluded in the saddest way, the sombre forebodings that had kept inhabitants in suspense through the grim development of the passage of the unnumberable bomber squadrons. With the four-engined bomber that crashed into the slopes of Mount Grammont, south of Bouveret 900 metres up, the British lost two planes in Valais during their air raid.
A military column left during the night to the place of the catastrophe. It was back on Tuesday at 1.pm.

[underlined] EXTRACT FROM:-
THE STAR WEEKLY. TORONTO, MAY 6th, 1944. [/underlined]
[underlined] FOURTH FLIGHT TO BERLIN
by
Frederick Griffin
(Star Weekly Staff Reporter)
By Special Cable to the Star Weekly from London. [/underlined]
That day, having recovered from his wounds, Jack Meek of Vancouver was going back on operations. "How do you feel about it?" I asked him. The tall, ruddy, blond navigator with the unwavering blue eyes answered honestly, and when you wear the coveted C.G.M. ribbon you can afford to be honest. "They say you feel a bit shaky at first, but that once you get the feel of it again you'll be all right".
Jack Meek was rejoining the same R.A.F. crew with whom he had made that fearful trip back from Berlin in January. Not all the same crew. There would be a new wireless operator, for Sergt. Jimmy Hall had been killed that night. And the wounded leg of Sergt. Joe Schwartz of Windsor, Ont., rear gunner, wasn't healed enough yet to let him take his place. But the rest were all crewed up as before, all set for another prang at Berlin, Frankfurt or Nuremberg.
There were P.O. William Breckenridge of Glasgow, the pilot, who won the D.F.C. that night and was now flight lieutenant; W.O. Richard Jack Meek, the navigator, shortly to get his commission, who was given the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal; F.O. Val Poushinsky of Calgary, the bomb aimer; Sergt. Alex. Stephenson from Banffshire, the engineer, and P.O. William Baker, the mid-upper gunner from Surrey, who also got the D.F.C. for that night's work, when they brought their Lancaster Y for Yorker limping back 500 miles to a crash landing. Three Scots, three Canadians and an Englishman – such was the original crew. They had never met until August last, when they were teamed up by fate. And a great team they made.
"He's a rock". Thus Pilot Bill Breckenridge described big red Jack Meek with the sure voice and the steady intelligent eyes. At 35 he was the oldest of the crew, in most cases by a good many years. As a youngster in Vancouver he had been a newspaperman for three years with the Canadian Press. He left this to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and served in the Yukon. He was 12 years with the mounted and the B.C. provincial police. He was a Corporal in the provincials at Prince George when he joined the R.C.A.F. in November, 1941.
They were a well-welded crew when that January evening at dusk they took off for their fourth visit to Berlin. "It was a nice evening, not much cloud", said Meek, "a good night for navigating. I got several accurate winds with their direction and strength down to a T. That meant a lot to us. It came in very important later on. We had no trouble getting to out [sic] target. We saw several combats as we came in from the north but we swung in well on time. Remember I'm quoting from memory.
There was plenty of flak and the low clouds were lit up by searchlights. All of a sudden from the rear I saw tracers going past on each side. They seemed to converge as they whizzed past. The odd point I remember was that I could hear them so loudly with our engines going and all that racket. But when they hit the kite there were terrific bangs.
[page break]
- 2 -
Just then we were attacked again from the port rear, maybe by the same Jerry fighter, maybe by another one. That's when I was hit. The kite was pitching around all over the place as Bill tried to shake if [sic] off. I was crouched down behind him doubled up. I thought we had had it and instinctively reached for my parachute.
Things were happening so fast. We could'nt shake the searchlights and flak was coming up, too. It was kind of a madhouse, the terrific noise of cannon shots exploding against the kite. It's all a bit confused to me, and I guess I must have passed out for some minutes for I don't recall other attacks."
Jack Meek had two wounds. One was in his shoulder. The other was caused by shrapnel which went clean through his middle entering at the right side of his back and emerging at the left front just below his chest. It was with such wounds that he carried on and marvellously navigated back to England without instruments. There were four such attacks altogether in those hellish five minutes over Berlin.
The mid-upper gun turret was smashed and Bill Baker wounded on the side of his face by a shot which tore away his helmet and oxygen mask. The rear gun turret was also holed and Joe Schwartz severely wounded by a piece of exploding shrapnel in his foot. Inter-communication with the after end was broken and those forward did'nt know what was happening aft.
The hydraulic system had been shot up; the bomb doors would'nt close nor, as they found later, would the wheels lower. One gas tank was holed. Three rev. indicators and three boost gauges were useless. So were the direction finder and the gyro compass. The elevators and rudders were damaged. Such was the state of their Lancaster that night over Berlin with one of the crew dead and three of the crew wounded when they emerged from their fourth fighter attack and turned homeward through the blasting dark.
When Jack Meek began to remember again they were down to 15,000 feet and "streaking like hell out of Berlin". Bill Breckenridge, unflurried, was flying that damaged kite as on a cross-country hike. "We found Jimmy Hall the wireless operator slumped over his set. He was warm but unconscious, and we didn't know he was dead. We gave him first aid.
"We had scarcely left Berlin when we discovered smoke aft. So Alex. went back and fought that in the fuselage putting it out. Then later on there was another fire when the electrical circuit broke into a blaze. Everyone was suffering from lack of oxygen. As for the controls, some would work and some would'nt.
"There's one thing I am proud of. Everyone did as they had been trained to do. It showed where our discipline and our training came in. Even when we were being attacked and in that jam over Berlin with tracers screaming past and cannon shot hitting us with the crash and sound of sledgehammers and with Bill flinging us about all over the sky, no one panicked. An [sic] no man showed any fear when we saw the mess we were in. Everyone just carried on as he had been taught by the book."
And what did he, Jack Meek, do during all this long run home in such a state to win himself the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal? For the C.G.M. is not handed out lightly. It is a high award in the R.A.F. and only eight warrant officers and sergeants of the R.C.A.F. have won it so far, Jack Meek being the eighth. It was originally instituted by Queen Victoria in 1874 as an award for warrant officers and N.C.O.'s of the Royal Marines. A few years later it was extended to petty officers of the Royal Navy. It was'nt until 1943 that the R.A.F. adopted it as a special award to warrant officers and N.C.O.'s for outstanding operational service. It rates higher than the D.F.M.
[page break]
- 3 -
Yes, what did Jack Meek do to get it? Remember he had a wound in his shoulder and a hole right through his insides from back to front. I asked him to tell me his part. He told me as simply and unaffectedly as if he were giving evidence about someone else, in that same measured objective unaffected impersonal fashion he had told of the whole affair.
"I had very good winds on the way in", he said. "I mean data. I had to go entirely on these in reverse going back, for all our navigating gear was wrecked. Ant [sic] the trouble was I could'nt hold up the sextant, for my left arm would drop down on me and gradually it went helpless altogether. Fortunately this date must have been accurate, for it took us right back to our track. I also took observation of the landmarks I knew". When he saw searchlights or flak over German territory he would say to Bill Breckenridge, "That's Hanover – go so many minutes in such a direction, then bear so much west."
"When I gave him a bearing, he said, "I would try to give him the next one, too. I tried to figure it out quite a bit ahead for I felt I might pass out any minute – I felt a little light in the head – and I did'nt want to leave them in ignorance of our position".
"Could you manage to move?" I asked. "To some degree, he replied, "I could manage to stand up, look out, and tell the skipper what I saw. I bled quite a bit I know, and I guess that's why I was getting light in the head. But there was no time to be worrying about that. It was a case of trying to darn well get back.
"The open bomb doors were quite a drag and we could'nt get speed, but fortunately we were able to get altitude. About two hours after leaving Berlin, I was able to ascertain our exact position by getting a fix and found we were just three miles of [sic] track. That was all, and it gave me a feeling of relief. We were over the Zuider Zee then".
They lacked oxygen and were chilled through in a badly holed aircraft. They hit England right on the nose. "As we came close", Jack continued, "we sent out a distress signal and in less than a minute the searchlights had started to home us. But we could'nt get the wheels down; the air pressure was blown away and they were locked up in position. The pilot and engineer tried everything they knew to get them down, but they would'nt move. So Bill said to me "Tell the boys to prepare for a crash landing."
"Nevertheless, we made a very successful belly-landing. Bill brought her in like a baby. I could feel the plane land on her tail wheel and run forward on that, her nose still up. Then as she slowed, the open bomb doors hit the ground and snapped closed. We sure got out of her fast. We were afraid of fire, we still had a bay full of incendiaries, but none of them went off".
And so they came back home from their dreadful trip, to find themselves in the hands of R.A.F. medicals, and to learn for the first time that Jimmy Hall was dead. The R.A.F. doctor treated Joe Schwartz first as seemingly the worst wounded, and this calm Meek sat and read his medical books. "I became quite interested", he said. "The whole world seemed to have turned upside down and this weemed [sic] to keep me on an even keel".
Then the doctor stood Meek up, helped him strip and was astonished at his severe wounds. With a mirror he showed him where the shrapnel had entered; he could where it had come out. "So you still feel all right?"2 said the doctor. "Yes", said Jack Meek, and passed out.
He woke up in the hospital.
I asked him, "Tell me what were your thoughts when you found yourself in such a jam over Berlin"?. "Your're intent on your job, subconsciously anyway, said Jack Meek. "And you have the common sense to grap [sic] your parachute. You're all set for whatever may happen, but you carry on. What I mean is I have seen

[underlined] THE DEATH OF FRED BALL [/underlined]
When Fred Ball our R.Gunner was killed, not baling out of our A/C when the wing was on fire, four members of our crew were made to attend his funeral at Birmingham.
Les Bartlet Bomb Aimer )
Reg Payne W/OP ) We were all ordered to attend
Jock Higgins Mid Upper ) his funeral at B.ham.
Michael Beetham Pilot )
Les & Jock came home with me to Kettering, and arranged to meet Michael Beetham on Leicester Station the next morning and the four of us would travel to B.ham on the train the next morning.
At Kettering we only had one bed for the three of us, and I dont [sic] think we had much sleep before the journey to B.ham.
Michael was waiting for us at the Leicester Rail Station and we all travelled to B.ham together.
We had a taxi to Fred Balls house and arrived before lunch time, just in time to stop Freds [sic] family from taking the lid of[sic] Freds [sic] coffin.
After the crash we were all asked if we could identify the four bodies in the crashed aircraft as they were all crushed, not one of us agreed to do this.
The four of us carried the coffin to the coach and to the cemetery I noticed there was four inch’s [sic] of rain water in the bottom of the grave as the coffin was lowerd [sic] into it.
Back to Lincoln Ena was glad to see me again, and then from the death of Fred, I had to visit her on my bike on my own. I think the death of Fred brought us much closer together.
Ena would have never married me whilst I was flying but after another year or so I was taken off flying and we made the day.

Tea on the Tirpitz
TOURIST attraction: the upturned and rusting hull of what was once the apple of Hitler's eye, the battleship Tirpitz, sunk by R.A.F. Lancasters (after an earlier attack by midget submarines and torpedo bombers) in Tromsoe Fjord in 1944.
It is visited by hundreds of people every year.
And now, I hear, the local Norwegian authorities are considering building a small refreshment pavilion on the hull.

As the pilot flew over Swinemunde (right foreground) on his outward trip, he noticed a smoke screen just starting up over the port. Having completed his sortie he returned, again via Swinemunde, and took the above photograph. It shows that the generators have ceased and the cloud formed has drifted. Visible in the distance, more than 100 miles to the south, is the huge cloud of smoke rising from the Erkner Ball Bearing Works on the outskirts of Berlin. These works had been attacked by daylight bombers of U.S. 8th Air Force, and it is interesting to compare the characteristic shape of this cloud of smoke with the one seen on photographs taken in the Erkner area that day. (See E. in C., Vol. 6, No. 13, page 241.)

TSB. 1923,19,1939 I left Bridlington Grammar School eh, then, which I didn’t join the RAF straight away I joined the Air Training Corps, I was in there for about a year and a half. The war had already started after about a year and a half I thought well I’ll volunteer for Aircrew, which I went down to London, passed with flying colours, as I think and after that I was eh. I am trying to think where I went after various placed in the RAF in England. I was in Harrogate, I was in, up at South Shields. Then, I am trying to think of it, dates. That’s 1939 so, in after I had been in the RAF a few months I was posted to South Africa and my first wife and I then decided, ‘shall we get married and save the money until the war’s finished?’ Which, I got married when I was only twenty it was in the February ’43. And eh, the next within a week of being married I was transferred to South Africa where I, where I was on the Ansons, flying in the Ansons. On returning from South Africa about a year afterwards I as posted to LLandwrog in Wales. While in Wales there was quite a lot of flying the Anson again and eh just before my birthday which was 21st of March 1924, 1924 yes my first birthday my I was, my was transferred, I was transferred and posted to Finningley which is now Doncaster Airfield. So, so in February 1923, I was born in ’23, 1943 I was flying to South Africa which I say after South Africa I went to LLandwrog. Getting to Finningley which is on 21st birthday which was 1944 I was travelling from LLandwrog to Finningley with a kit bag over my shoulder, that was my 21st birthday. So consequently I flew from Finningley, I was on the Wellingtons for a short time. Eh, a leaflet trip to Holland dropping leaflets then from Finningley I went to Lindholme just down the road onto Halifax’s. While there I had a leaflet trip again to Holland and then from Lindholme I was posted to Hemswell onto the Lancasters. From Hemswell I was posted to Elsham, that’s where I did my first operation. I am only guessing now, Elsham I should say get to Elsham some time in September which was ’44. Our first operational trip was early I should say early November and I you ask me what that was like I can only answer [unclear] It was absolutely horrendous. The flak and everything else was shocking we were caught in the eh, eh the searchlights. Anyway with a bit of luck we got home safely. I just said to skipper ‘I am pleased were back from that,’ I said ‘ thirty trips like this we will double grave before we get to thirty trips.’ Anyway that was all right, we went into land, as we landed we flew straight off the airfield. The plane went up on its side we were straight off, all flat tyres. so that was the first one. After that most of our trips was over what we call the Happy Valley which was the German Steel places, Essen, most of mine was to Essen. Anyway we flew to Essen, we was very pleased to get back. Anyway we did about another ten trips after that ten or eleven trips after that. A couple of pretty bad ones after that but the biggest majority were what you call very easy. The last one we never made as we were coming on our way back, we had a very easy trip, a very quiet trip. The Rear Gunner said ‘We got a; fighter on our port side Skipper.’ Anyway he tried to do the evasive did a bit of a mm a mm, tried to get rid of him anyway. Consequently after about ten minutes, half an hour. Oh I thought we were on our way home. The next thing I knew was the Pilot saying ‘Abandon aircraft were on fire.’ I said, I was I went off in rotation. Just as I was going I saw, three [unclear] last thing I remember saying to my Skipper ‘I’ll see you down stairs Phil.’ With that I was pulling me ‘chute, just as I was pulling me ‘chute, I just heard on intercom the Rear Gunner say ‘Christ I’ve pulled me ‘chute.’ With that I’d gone, I didn’t know what happened after that. But what happened after that I was, only left on the plane was the Pilot, the Rear Gunner and the Mid Upper both the Gunners were Canadians. The young lad I thought I was the ablest, the youngest twenty one. Eddie was only just turned eight, nineteen for all I know he panicked and wouldn’t jump with the Mid Upper, Canadian, wanted him to jump with him, but he refused to jump. ‘No I’m not jumping.’ So all the Pilot said to Mid Upper ‘Get yourself off I’ll try to land the plane.’ The Mid Upper said, he jumped, as his ‘chute opened, all he saw was the wing dropped off with that the plane went straight into the ground, both killed. I have always said, I have always tried to find out to find out why this time, he was a bit older than me but had got two daughters. His wife had left Jersey, she was living in a hotel. Where ever he went she was living in hotels. So what she was left with was two daughters, no home to go to. I said I’ll, I always said he should have got decorated but he never did. So that is about all that I can say about that. So anyway when we was, when we were shot down we were taken to just a little village near from where we was shot down. They had seen us coming down so we had no chance of escaping. So they put me into a billet a Nissan hut with about thirty young Germans in. As I went in I was the only one of the crew that at the time, they found. I thought ‘well I am going to get knocked about here with all these lads.’ I had been in there about half an hour, one of them sidled up to me ‘there you are,’ gave me a bit of their ersatz bread. I thought it was awful, I put it in me pocket. Anyway about another half hour went by another young lad came, German lad, could speak, he could speak a bit of English. He just said ‘ me was a prisoner of Americans me look after you.’ With that he gave me a couple of blankets for the night. That is about all I could say about them, they were very good. But even today I still think now that would be December 1944 we were shot down. Even today he said, ah that is what he did say to me, ‘We have,’ when I was in this Nissan hut, ‘you have broken our lines we are now going to push you back.’ I never thought anything more about that at all until after the war. It must have been what you called ‘The Battle of the Bulge.’ So automatically now I often think ‘ I wonder if there are any of these young lads still living today?’ That’s all, that’s all I can say about that one. So after that we, we I was posted to eh, I can’t remember the name where was it, posted into Poland and one night, one morning woke up, right evacuating the camp. The Russians were coming very close to where, to where we were, so we had to, as the Russians were advancing we had to march away from them. So we were on, in the middle of winter, we were marching until about one or two in the morning carried on might have been one or two weeks, I don’t know. But there again I was one of the lucky ones, the last morning we were on the walk we’d get into farm, I’d went into the farm I were in the barn. I was one of the last in the barn and this would be one o’clock in the morning. When I woke up, whatever time it was, I don’t know all I can say it was light, it could have been five o’clock in the morning. There I was laid outside where it was twenty degrees below. I went, I couldn’t, me hands were, I couldn’t get me hands together, me feet was frozen, I said ‘ the only thing if the lads lit a fire.’ Got warmed up within two or three hours we were back on the wa,march again. So consequently we marched and again for another week, how long I don’t know. Once again I was very lucky one day they just piled all our section, our section were piled into rail trucks and how many were in the trucks I don’t know how we got on for weeing or whatever I don’t know how we got on about that. All I know before it took us about a day a day and a half on this truck, finished up somewhere near Berlin. That is when the Russians liberated us which was what I gather, I don’t know. I don’t know [unclear] prisoners. Once again I would be guessing but it was sometime in April time, May. I don’t know when the war finished. But once they, I always remember the Russians coming through our camp knocking all the fences down. There were men and women on the tanks, just the same and I must admit at the time I thought ‘well they are just like a pack a bandit these lot.’ We got on well with them, they didn’t bother with us, we didn’t bother with them. They would not, we were there two or three weeks at least, the Americans sent a couple of Troops to move us and they said ‘ you are going when it is out turn, we will let you know when you are going.’ So we got fed up of waiting, one day we set off from the camp ‘we will make our way to the Elbe to get across ourselves.’ So we [unclear] a mile down the road next thing we got, the Russians were in front of us back to the camp ‘ you go when we tell you.’ Consequently eh why I know a bit about the time there eh when they did allow us to go we got to Brussels, we got a bit of money, we got showered and everything, money we had a night out in, in Brussels. Consequently when I got back home my second birthday was May the 23rd 1945, So but, so consequently I didn’t get back for me twenty first, I didn’t get back until after me birthday which would be after the 23rd 1945. Consequently I was one of the last prisoners back so I got indefinite leave. So indefinite leave I was posted, well I was in Bridlington, got posted to Scarborough so I was backwards and forwards from Brid to Scarborough for about three or four months. Finally when the war finished they decided aircrew you could [unclear] aircrew but you could only go as ground crew. I just had to come out, I came out of the forces. So that’s about all I can tell you, that’s about it in a nutshell. That’s about all I could say. My Pilot was one of the last to leave Jersey before the Germans occupied Jersey. He was on the last boat to leave, his wife went with him, a young girl, went with him. They got married before they [unclear] over to England and where ever he was posted, Phil, she was in the hotel somewhere. She followed him around so there she was when he got shot down she was stood there on her own with two kids and that’s why I think he should have got married. The main thing of all so consequently I knew Phil only five months of my life and for seventy odd years I have never forgotten him [appears upset].
MJ. You shouldn’t you don’t have to worry, that’s part of it you see.
TSB. Yeah and all that I can say is that a marvellous lad, man, fellow.
MJ. Do you remember his full name, do you remember his full name, do you remember his name?
TSB. Phillip.
MJ. Do you remember his surname?
TSB. Picot that all it was and consequently I mentioned the two daughters and his three aunties all the rest of the family have all died. But the daughters have married very well they are very happy. Two lovely families two and two and eh three aunties I think they have all lost their husbands. But they are all lovely people, lovely people.
MJ. Went to London for your medical ?. [?].[unclear]
TSB. Yeah I can’t think [unclear] I know I went from Kings Cross [unclear] I walked from Kings Cross I can’t remember where it was now but I nineteen, as I say about eighteen to nineteen I was twenty three ‘40 to 1942 I should think would be when I came in forces, long time [laugh]. But eh no at least I have often said eh you have got your memories haven’t you, they are worth a lot your memories. That is why I get so sentimental with Phil my Pilot because as I say I only knew him five months. We were very friendly, we were very very friendly. Not many days gone bye without I think something about him.
MJ. What made you so friendly, what what ?
TSB. I don’t know, just the crew, I think during the war you you, fact, you you made up as a crew, seven of you and I think they tried to keep that crew as separate as they could. So in other words eh anybody lost they weren’t missed as much, they look after themselves because each crew was more or less, they look after themselves. So whenever we went down to the pub the seven of us went out together eh at least most nights of the week, five or six but we always stuck together all the time we were flying. Your mates, you were what you call mates as simple as that. In other words at the end of the day unless you were lucky, you died together. But eh I say I have these thoughts many a time but I am very happy and [unclear] I have had a marvellous life, marvellous life. As I say one of my old aunties I used to see her ninety five or so, she fell down stairs, I have not forgot she turned round to us and she said ‘Stuart I don’t want anybody to live as long as I have lived,’ she said ‘ I am not ready for going yet’ she lived till ninety seven well I got to ninety two now and she was definitely the eldest of all of my family. If I could get to ninety eight whither I do or not, grace of Gods is that. Eh but if I get to ninety eight I shall finish up as the eldest one in the family that’s it.[laugh]. But she was a right battle axe was my auntie, she taught me a lot and I still think of her at ninety seven anyway I’ve got to ninety two whither I get to ninety five by the grace of God, you don’t know, you don’t know. One thing certain and a betting man and I used to like betting on the horses and that as a betting man one certainty is we all know we have to die sometime. It’s a good job we don’t know when. We do we all know we have got to go sometime. And I say when I talk about luck if I get to a hundred very good but whither I do or not you don’t know. There is a lot of luck in life as well you know some people are born lucky and some are [unclear]. And I don’t know about you, you had an accident didn’t you. Was it motor accident you had then?
MJ. Em I’ll make sure this is on, go on.
TSB. After the war my mother, well during the war my mother got a telegram eh, just missing. So she went berserk, demented, crackers then of course shortly after that, presumed killed. So that she is worse than ever then about a month after that somebody came dashing into mums shop at Hilderthorpe Road End Bridlington saying ‘Nellie, Nellie, Stuarts alive, Stuarts alive.’And how they got to know that, not from the Air Ministry it was given over the news by Lord Haw Haw that Flight Sergeant Boynton is now a prison of war in Germany. That’s the first time my Mother new I was living. And it wasn’t, she didn’t get it from the RAF or the Ministry, Lord Haw Haw made it over the news one night, one day that’s first thing, first time she knew I was living. [laugh] killed presumed dead, it was a totally different thing when she knew I was still living you see.
MJ. On behalf of the International Bomber Command I would like to thank Warrant Officer Stuart Boynton on the date of the 24th of June 2014. Thank you very much my name is Michael Jeffery.

Description
An account of the resource
During 1939 Stuart left grammar school and joined the Air Training Corps. After about half a year he volunteered for air crew and was accepted. He and his girlfriend were married in February 1943. Stuart was posted to South Africa working on Ansons and about a year later was posted to Llandwrog in Wales. His next postings were to RAF Finningley, flying in Wellingtons and to Holland dropping leaflets from a Halifax. From RAF Finningley he went to RAF Lindholme, RAF Hemswell and RAF Elsham Wolds. Stuart described his first operational trip as absolutely horrendous. Most of the crew’s trips were then to the Ruhr and the German steel works in Essen. After that they did another ten or eleven trips. During the last trip the crew had to abandon the aircraft when it was shot down and burst into flames. All but two of the crew (one being the pilot, Phil Picot) baled out before the aircraft hit the ground. Stuart was captured and taken to a hut which housed about 30 Germans, but he was treated well. Stuart was detained in Poland. Their camp had to evacuate during a winter night as the Russians were advancing. They were marching for two or three weeks before being taken to a camp in Berlin by rail. They were liberated and eventually Stuart was posted to RAF Scarborough. He came out of the at the end of the war and said he had had a marvellous life.

[underlined] SPERRY GYRO-PILOT [/underlined]
(Notes for Pilots)
1. [underlined] Introduction [/underlined]
This installation controls the flight of an aircraft automatically and control surfaces are actuated by the push and pull experienced when oil pressure is directed to one end and the other of pistons set in the normal control cable assembly.
The direction of this oil pressure is governed in relay by the movement of two control units--(a) a directional gyro (b) an artificial horizon. Movement of the aircraft [indecipherable words] set altitude of flight through atmosphere disturbances, causes the instruments to deflect. E.g. (if the nose of the aircraft ris[missing letters] the image in the artificial horizon rises also, this automatically supplies pressure to the elevator piston -- the stick is forced forward until the normal altitude is attained and the pressure released -- similarly for aileron and rudder controls.
Manual adjustment of these control [indecipherable word] is provided so that aircraft can be made to fly "one wing down" or say, steady "climb or dive". A further manual adjustment of the directional gyro allows "turns" to be executed automatically or the Gyropilot will steer any selected heading.
2. [underlined] Description of Equipment. [/underlined] (Refer to sketches).
(a) [underlined] Oil Pump [/underlined]
An engine driven of [sic] pump provides the necessary [indecipherable word] and flow of oil for operating the Gyropilot. (Fitted rear of the starboard engine in a Catalina aircraft.)
(b) [underlined] Vacuum Pump [/underlined]
This provides vacuum for spinning the gyro control units and operating the relays which direct the oil pressure to the pistons in the control cable assembly. (In the Catalina two such pumps are fitted -- one to [missing word] engine. [indecipherable word] one can be used -- the selection is given to cover the possibility of one engine failure.)
(c) [underlined] Servo Piston Units [/underlined]
The servo or piston units consist of three cylinders (one for each of the controls) cast en bloc with pistons which are directly connected to each of the central cable assemblies. The oil pressure is allowed to become effective by the "main control" valves which are integral with the servo units and connected to a lever in the pilot's cockpit. In the 'OFF' position oil [indecipherable words] from one side of the piston to the other and manual movement of the control column is unimpeded.
(d) [underlined] Oil Sump or Reservoir Tank [/underlined]
This contains a supply of Sperry Gyro pilot fluid a [indecipherable word] and filler cap. (In the Catalina, this tank is [indecipherable word] the Starboard engine nacelle.)
(e) [underlined] Automatic Auxiliary Oil Pump [/underlined]
This pump is automatic and returns oil from the lowest of the oil pipe line system back to the reservoir tank ([indecipherable word] functioning correctly it is characterised by a noticeable "click-clack".)
(f) [underlined] Directional Gyro Control Unit [/underlined]
This unit contains the directional gyro, ball back indicator, air "pick offs" which relay oil pressure to the servo units, the directional gyro card, the follow-up card, the rudder control knob and the caging knob for the direction gyro. Movement to the left or right of the rudder knob turns the follow up card and after caging [indecipherable words] card be set in a similar manner.
[page break]
The follow up card is directly attached to the "air pick offs" which are at neutral when the reading of the two cards co-incide. Thus, the follow-up card provides the [indecipherable word] set heading to steer, oil pressure will be applied to [indecipherable word] control until aircraft has turned about the gyro [missing word] the cards co-incide.
(g) [underlined] Bank & Climb (Artificial Horizon) Control Unit [/underlined]
This unit is normally attached to the D.I. unit and the two are spring mounted on the instrument panel mid-way between the two pilots.
This unit contains the vertical axis gyro (vacuum driven) which is used for lateral and longitudinal altitude indication and control. It also contains similar "air pick of[missing letters] with an aileron knob and an elevator knob as a manual method of setting these "pick offs" to set a control the attitude of flight. Instead of a follow up card [indecipherable word] pointe[missing letters] are provided to show the relative positions of the "pick [missing word] valves which, once again, are neutral when tabs co-incide. A caging knob is provided for [indecipherable words] horizon -- this knob is turned to the left and right for uncaging or caging the gyro.
The vacuum gauge is self explanatory and the level flight knob is discussed later.
(h) [underlined] Speed Control Valves [/underlined]
The speed valves serve to govern the rate of flow of the main oil preserve supply to the servo pistons. Three knobs are provided, are for each of the controls. When turning these knobs numbers appear in a small sector above each of them. "O" indicates the greatest restri[missing letters] is offered to the supply of oil pressure to the pistons and "6" indicates that the valves are fully open.
NOTE: Low umber setting: automatic pilot will [indecipherable word] aircraft sluggishly.
High number setting: automatic pilot will correct aircraft rapidly.
(j) [underlined] Individual Controls [/underlined]
These are master bypass valves for each of the servo pistons. E.G. if the individual rudder [indecipherable word] is "off", then the rudder can be operated manually.
[page break]
3. [underlined] Using the Gyropilot: [/underlined] – (In a Catalina)
Prior to take off the Gyro pilot must be tested and the following procedure adopted.
(a) [underlined] Check for air in Servos. [/underlined]
Before starting engines, ensure that the reservoir is [missing word] set the aeroplane controls in the central position and turn the gyro main control [underlined] ON [/underlined] (with individual controls Apply light pressure each way to each [indecipherable word]. Controls shoulb [sic] as though locked. If there is a resilient action it is an indication of air bubbles in the servo piston units. Thus air must be removed from the system before take off. Do not mistake springing of the control cable assembly for air in the servo cylinders.
(b) [underlined] Remove air from Servo Cylinders [/underlined]
1. Turn main gyro control [underlined] "OFF". [/underlined]
2. Start both engines.
3. Turn on main oil pressure valve
4. Open speed control valves to read "6".
5. With engines running at approximately 1000 rpm (or more if necessary to comply with taxying programme) on the water).
6. Work elevator, rudder and aileron, holding each control at full lock in both extreme positions for about 30 secs (or more) to allow time for [indecipherable word] air to be forced out of the end of the servo cylinders and carried back to the oil tank.
(c) [underlined] Check Vacuum [/underlined]
Should not be less than 3" of mercury at [indecipherable words] (engine speed) or more than 5" at maximum rpm.
(d) [underlined] Check oil pressure. [/underlined]
Close speed control valves when checking oil pressure with starboard engine running at 1000 rpm (or more) oil pressure should read approximately 100 lbs/square inch.
(e) [underlined] Uncage Bank and Climb Gyro. [/underlined]
If aeroplane is not level, gyro should move slowly towards correct indication of the attitude of the aircraft
(f) [underlined] Uncage Directional Gyro [/underlined]
(g) [underlined] Open Speed Control Valves. [/underlined]
A control will not operate unless its speed control is partially open.
(h) [underlined] Ensure level control is 'OFF' [/underlined]
(i) [underlined] Ensure Individual Controls are "ON" and main oil pressure supply valve is ON. [/underlined]
(j) [underlined] Set Follow-up Indices. [/underlined]
i.e. turn manual rudder control knob until both rudder cards are reading the same (Maintaining a straight taxying path). Line up aileron and [indecipherable words] tabs to co-incide by turning respective manual control knobs. NOTE: Stick and rudder controls should be held still in approximately a central position during this operat[missing letters]
(k) [underlined] Engage main gyro control slowly [/underlined]
Keeping a straight taxy path and holding manual cockpit controls.
(l) [underlined] Test Operation of Gyropilot [/underlined]
by turning Rudder, Aileron and Elevator knobs, noting that controls move both ways, in the correct direction and at approximately equal speed each way. (Up elevator will probably be slower than down elevator due to the weight of the surface.) Slow aileron or rudder one way and fast action the opposite way, or control [indecipherable words] direction only is indicative of maladjustment which [missing word] be corrected in accordance with service instructions [indecipherable word] Trouble Shooting. Set Turn Control successively [missing word] and LEFT to check operation of rudder follow-up card.
[page break]
As soon as line mechanic or pilot has become familiar with above routine he will be able to run a complete ground check [missing word] to three minutes during the run up of engines. A Gyropilot [missing words] form satisfactorily in the air, and, therefore, any malfunction of the apparatus should be corrected before any attempt is [missing words] use it.
[underlined] NOTE: BEFORE TAKE OFF MAIN CONTROL MUST BE 'OFF' [/underlined]
[underlined] Engaging the Gyropilot [/underlined] (in flight (not below [indecipherable word])
Several details should be checked or performed prior to engaging the Gyropilot. These are listed for convenience of the pilot. Familiarity with the Gyropilot will soon reduce this procedure to simple routine.
1. Check vacuum.
Desired vacuum is 4 inches of mercury. It should not be less than 3 inches or more than 5 [missing word]
2. Check oil pressure.
Best [indecipherable words] will have been determined [indecipherable word] original tests.
3. Open Speed Valves. to (1 or 2)
A closed speed valve locks its control in position when pilot is ON. It is, ther[missing letters] important that the valves be [missing word] prior to engaging the Gyropilot.
4. Set level control to OFF
5. Check Directional Gyro setting and be sure both gyros are uncaged.
6. Trim the airplane for "Hands Off" condition.
7. Set follow-up indices to co-incide with gyro indications.
Rudder follow up card should match Direc[missing letters] gyro [indecipherable word] index should [indecipherable word] mark at top of Bank and Climb Gyro [indecipherable words] Climb index should match mark at right end of [missing word] miniature airplane bar.
8. Set Turn Control to OFF
9. [deleted word] Ensure that individual controls are "ON".
10. Engage Gyropilot slowly.
By holding on to the [indecipherable word] as the Gyropilot is engaged the pilot can feel [indecipherable words] Gyropilot is taking [indecipherable words] functioning properly.
