Lancaster over London
The day Nelson was upstaged by a rare glimpse of aviation history
[photograph]
[missing word] LANCASTER bomber flies over [missing letters]falgar Square and provides [missing letters]don’s tourists with a rare- [missing word] –seeing bonus. For once the [missing letters]wds turned a blind eye on [missing letter]elson as the sound of the plane’s four Merlin engines stole the old sea hero’s thunder. It was a sound many had not heard for some 30 years and the under-30s not at all – except in old war movies. The Lancaster, piloted by Squadron Leader ‘Jacko’ Jackson, made its historic flight yesterday when it tracked massed bands marching below. Marchers and flier were part of the 1976 Royal Tournament ceremonial parade – the Tournament opens at Earl’s Court on Wednesday. the bom[missing letters] is the RAF’s only flying Lancas[missing letters] and is part of the Battle of Brita[missing letters] Memorial Flight based at Coningsby, Lincolnshire. But to many Londoners yesterday it was simply ‘one of ours. . . .’

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. Well nearly everything is over now except camp. We set out for Bhawali on the 6th. I did not do to badly in the sports. I came 2nd in the half-mile and got a nice cup. My class won the inter-class relay so I got a medal also and a cup for football. Not at all bad. Steve [deleted] go [/deleted] won a medal for coming 2nd in place kicking. I will get my shooting medals on prize giving day. The sports were a sucess.[sic] We had a fine time during the holidays. Thank goodness it did not

Rain. There was quite a crowd of [indecipherable] boys at Jocksley Hall So we had a fine time. We have learnt a couple of very amusing drawing room jokes. The rink has been refloored and is quite nice now. I also went horse riding. I was still quite at home in the saddle. I did quite well in the last series of tests. I came 9th. That’s gone up two places from the [deleted] la [/deleted] first series. I lost in the boxing to one of my class boys. It was hardly a fight as [deleted] none [/deleted] neither of us went at it. The boxing has been very badly arranged and when boys of the same class come together, especially friends, there is hardly a fight. It has turned very cold these last few

days.
I recieved [sic] a letter from Lall Stoult, one of my old class fellows broke the record in his class for high jump. He did 5ft 3ins. he will most probably do much better in a couple of years as he is still young. Mummy has gone into Bhawali to-day with Doris Lucas and another student. In the end [obscured] person did not turn up at Mrs Hearness but [deleted] is [/deleted] it is much jollier at Jocksley Hall as there are people of our own [indecipherable] there.
Well no more news today
God bless & keep you & Mummy for us with lots of love & kisses from your loving son David.

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and the newspaper cuttings. They are most interesting. Yes thank God the Gowdowns were not burnt. I am glad to hear that there was not much jute[sic] burnt[deleted]d[/deleted]. I arrived safely from camp yesterday, after having a fine time. If we had a month of camp we would all come back strong men. While giving in rifles one of the boys rifles fell straight on my foot so I am not playing games for a few days. It was lucky that I had army [deleted]f[/deleted] boots on. [deleted] I w[/deleted] we saw Mummy today and had a long chat. Steve’s arm does not effect him in the least while playing tennis. In fact he is playing a much harder game now.
[page break]
I won a [indecipherable] in camp in one of the shooting competitions and was done out of one in another. I didn’t half curse the adjutant. Hockey has begun again. The Leslie Tournament (Hockey), Interclass begins on Sunday. I hope my class does something. We have had no more rain but it is turning quite cold now. The water in the morning is awful.
Never mind Dad you won’t be lonely much longer please God, as there are less than 60 days left.
My class played the xth[sic] in cricket this morning. We made less than 50 all out and they are still below us for six wickets. I made a duck. Well no more news today. God bless & keep you both for us.with lots of love & kisses from your loving son.
David.

3rd May 1936
My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. [deleted]In[/deleted] In spite of all the efforts the crop is turning out to be a big one. Will that be good for the firm or bad? Steve is in stonecross with a bad throat but it is nothing to worry about.
I played in the orchestra to-day and managed much better than the last time. If I play in it for a few days I will be O.K. I only missed 2 lessons two week out of 40.
Our “A” team played the Golden Hub in the semifinals. After extra time the match was a draw 2 – 2 so there will be a replay. The refereries[sic] were cheating very badly, we were winning till 15 secs before time up they score an equaliser. The man who shot was right in the goal mouth and Mr. Lewty did not bother to tackle him. Everyone was furious. Our forwards missed 2 easy shots in the first five minutes. However they played an excellent game. The finals of the tournament and the subsidory[sic] one will be played on the same day.
[page break]
Dave – 1936
We have begun swimming. The water is not too cold and we enjoy ourselves. We have also [deleted] at [/deleted] begun sticking in for an hour on Sundays and doing some work on non-study nights. I went out skating on Sunday and then came back to school.
The inspector is up in Naini but he has not been [deleted] to us [/deleted] here yet. Brother Colagne is expected here any day. We saw the [indecipherable] some time ago and had a long chat.
We are both just writing an ordinary letter to Aunty Maisie and Uncle Bob thanking them and saying how we are getting on at school. A number of the boys are going up for the Police. I think the air-force will suit me best. Steve would like to go up for doctoring. Well no more news today, God bless and keep you for us with lots of love and kisses
from your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. Now that Mr. Furguson has come back work will be much easier for you. My height is 5 foot 5 inches and my wt. is 9 stine. I don’t know about Steve. Are you really growing half an inch a month?
While playing football the other day I was accidently tripped and fractured a bone in my hand. I went to Ramsay and had it attended to. It is getting on well. [deleted] but [/deleted] There is nothing to worry about. After a couple of months I will be able to play all games but I will not be able to box for a year or so.
Our “A” team played P.S.C “A” yesterday. We have at last broken our unlucky spell. We beat them 4 – 3. The game was a very fine one. The Command “A” and the Band “A”
[page break]
drew 2 – 2 so we are at present standing first in the league. We still however have to play the two best teams.
I actually passed in the French Test with 42. I came 5th out of 9 boys. The French Mistress had corrected three out of the four of my questions and I had got only 22 and she was bluffing herself that I had failed but in the fourth question Composition I got 20 out of 25. The highest marks were 67. Well no more news to-day, God bless & keep you for us. With lots of love and kisses from your loving son

My own darling Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. We have had a very fine last Saturday and Sunday. I was not in time for the [indecipherable] as I was stuck in for French but afterwards in the evening we went to Vals and had a jolly good time. We had had some good luck at the jack pot machine and won a few rupees to the good. After the dancing Mum wanted to come away without having any more tries at the jack pot, but I said no and Steve & I put in 8 annas each and bought four tokens. With that [deleted] we [/deleted] I got the Jack Pot Rs29 4 annas and gave Steve R7 [deleted] Mum [/deleted] Mum 7 Mavis 7 and I 7. The next day we lost a little of it but are still well to the good.
The match against the Band “A” and the College was magnificent. We beat them 4 – 2, Steve played a fine game. You must have seen his name in the papers as one of the scorers. At half time they were leading [deleted] 3- [/deleted] 2 – 1 and our two [indecipherable] were [indecipherable]. We gave them
[page break]
a good yell and the Band trying to play [deleted] unfl [/deleted] rough set our fellows going and we knocked them all over the show even little Steve and in the end gave them a good hiding. We play the Command “A” in an exhibition match on thursday, having lost the tournament by one point.
We have had heavy rain this month. Thirty inches so far. Mum gets the papers for us every day now, so that we are well in touch with all the news. Brother Connolly likes the Review of Reviews very much and says you could not have given him a book he likes better. My hand is getting on beautifully and the only thing that will put it out now will be if I fall on it again. After a month there should be no fear of that even. Well no more news today, God bless and keep you for us, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son
David.

ST. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE
NAINI TAL
12th October 1936.
My own darling Dad.
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. We have both got back from camp safe and sound and as fit as ever owing to the early morning P.T. and the marching etc. We had a really grand time in camp and were all very sorry to leave.
I went to camp with Rs10 and returned with Rs9. of course I received Rs5 blue lights which enables you to buy stuff from the Canteen and I made Rs5 through – careful speculation!
In the Sports we got 7 cups not 8, but in camp the governor distributed the shooting prizes. I got a cup for .22 shooting I came first in it in all schools and a second for snap shooting and a cup [deleted] for [/deleted] as I was in the Langley cup which we won; So we are bringing home 10 cups this year, [deleted] Qite [/deleted] quite a haul. We won the Langley Cup and the M.P. Shield. Sherwood won the Alison Cup and P.S.C. the Cadet shield. So we have once more come off best. We have won the M.P.
[page break]
shield for the last six years.
Now that the Sports and camp are over I will study my hardest and try and do well in the Lessons. In Camp the doctor had an alsation and a great dane and the [indecipherable] which he had from a pup would do anything he told, to walk on the left of the road, to knock a person down, to jump over the other dog and they even play tug o war. It was terribly cold in camp and we have all got colds.
I have been playing games lately and I am much better for it. Thank God my hand does not hinder me [deleted] a [/deleted] in any way. The Inter-class tournaments are about to begin. Probably the tennis will also be on soon. Steve and I are playing together in the Senior Doubles and will do our best. We stand a sporting chance. Well no more news to-day. God bless and keep you for us. With lots of love and kisses from your
Loving son
David.

My own darling Dad,
Thanks ever so much for your letter and all your news. Did Haik Mack[sic] Tell you what Raymond and Noel were doing? As a matter of fact I shall probably give Raymond a look up one of these days and see what he is doing.
At the moment I am on the waiting of the R.A.F.V.R. (Volunteer Reserve); of course I may be called up under the conscription act Id not know yet. Hitler is a damn nuisance he won’t ever let us wage war in peace, - with his absurd peace proposals which hardly show any signs of compromise at the moment anyway.
Last Wednesday I saw Cecil & Ron off at Paddington, they have gone to Bristol where Kings’ has reopened. I don’t know what Cecil will do as he is also on the R.A.F.V.R. [deleted] Volunteer [/deleted] Ron is not yet so.
On Monday last I saw Steve off at Liverpool Street. He is getting on well at Mancaster. He met Freddie who was at school with us. He also met Charles one the undergrads: who was on the farm with us. I shall write to Charles shortly.
[page break]
I am fed up doing nothing. I [deleted] sa [/deleted] phoned up Bill the other day – Bill was on the boat with us. We went out together. We also went out yesterday. When I was at Jan’s place a few days ago I met Alice a friend of Jan’s. we had dinner at the Marble Arch Corner House. She is quite amusing, though she talks too much.
I see [indecipherable] frequently and one of these days I shall be going to lunch with him, and Helen and Basil.
We are all getting on well. I am now getting black out eyes – I mean I can walk about quite well in the dark. [deleted] I [/deleted]
I am thinking of taking driving lessons. I don’t think I shall need many as I [deleted] should [/deleted] hardly think I have forgotten how to drive. I should like to take flying lessons while I am waiting but there is nothing doing am the moment.
No more today. God bless you. With lots of love and kisses from
your loving son
David.

My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter and all your news. I’m sorry to hear you had such bad luck in the Tennis. It is very hard to pick up after being almost sure of the match you start going the other way.
I am still doing nothing. If I can’t land any sort of a paid job soon I shall have no alternative but to join an A.R.P. Station as an unpaid worker. The only trouble is that you are usually out of pocket yourself if you do this. Still I suppose it is better than hanging around doing nothing. Also as at present there seems to be no developement[sic] in the fighting I dare say I shall have my full period of working.
Ian Dawson was in London for a few days. Ian [indecipherable] us hit the high lights or rather attempted to. We had a very enjoyable evening with Helen & Winnie, [indecipherable] with
[page break]
them was an awful flop.
I bought some very neat torches the other day but unfortunately I broke one. I shall probably take it back to the shop tomorrow and see what can be done.
The other night I went to a flick with Peter. “Hell’s Kitchen” – The Dead end kids were in it. It was an [indecipherable] good film. Peter & I were unaccompanied. This is a second day outing and we thoroughly enjoyed it. After the show we had something at the Corner House. At a table near us were a few young men, well pickled and before we left they had cut off their ties from just below the [deleted][indecipherable][/deleted] knot and when we left were trying to persuade the waiter to do the same.
No more to-day. God bless you. With lots
of love & kisses from
your loving son
David.

My darling Dad.
Thanks for your letter and all your news. Mum is in Hospital as Steve told you, but we had a letter from her this morning saying that on reexamination[sic] she has German Measles not ordinary measles. German measles is not too bad and Mum expects to be back in ten days. So don’t worry at not getting a letter from her. Yesterday I took down some flowers and fruit. Of course I wasn’t allowed to see her as it is infectious.
The Dr. said Mum could remain in the flat but we decided not to risk it, as Steve has his exam in a fortnight and also from the fact that she will get much better attention in a Hospital.
I have sent my name in as an Air Raid Warden (Voluntary). The people at the station are very nice. I expect to start work soon.
[page break]
Yesterday Peter rang up and asked me to Tea. After Tea Peter & his mother & father went to a flick & took me along. They were sorry to hear about Mum. Rosemary, Peter’s sister was in bed with Flu and [indecipherable] the other sister has just got over a painful operation.
In her letter Mum said she was feeling much better & that in a couple of days should be able to manage quite well. It is then that she will benefit from the rest in hospital. I think after she comes out we will insist in her taking a holiday somewhere, as soon as Steve’s exam is over.
The good old British Navy I don’t think the Altmark will get far, even if the Norwegians [deleted] u [/deleted] let her go.
I hope you are getting on well. Don’t worry about Mum as German Measles is very slight. Will let you know how she is getting on.
No more to-day. God bless you.
Love Dave.

My darling Dad,
Thanks for your letters and all your news. I don’t mind you telling me things at all Dad. I have now got into A.R.P. with quite a swing. I have been to lectures and exercises and duty three times a week.
About going back to College, when war broke out both the Radio & papers announced that bots of conscription age should not go back as it would be useless. That would have been so had I decided to join anything other than the R.A.F. of course I could probably have got exemption on the grounds that I have a Colonial Domicile, but I should not have liked to do a thing like that. Raymond can carry on his studies because engineering is a reserved occupation.
I shall try & get a job a little later. I
[page break]
can always get farm work later.
In things like lodge don’t hesitate to spend the loot on the dress as it is both a [indecipherable] and perhaps may be useful.
Aunty Renee stayed a few days with us & then Uncle Ossy came. But you saw the ease of the Domala, there is definitely a certain amount of risk. Mum & I are having lunch with Uncle Ossy & Aunty Renee to-day. Steve is at the hospital doing his last exam: paper. After that he has only practical and a [indecipherable]. The results come out about the 20th.
Last evening I had Tea at Mrs. Kock’s flat. On Sunday we had Gwyneth to Tea at the flat. She was speaking in a debate on divorce and [deleted] was [/deleted] came to consult me! I lent her one of my law books, which gave a short but simple chapter of the legal side of divorce to-day. I met Ronnie who was down from Bristol. They will all be in town for Easter. No more to-day. God bless you. Love Dave.

My darling Dad,
Thanks for your letter. We were very sorry to hear you had been ill & hope you are felling much better now.
When I am going to be called up beats me. It is an awful nuisance hanging around doing nothing. The A.R.P. work is something but it does not take up sufficient of my time. Anyway A.R.P. work is not a young man’s job, well not at the moment.
[deleted] aw [/deleted] I went over to Peter’s place the other day, and a day or so later we went to a [deleted] flick [/deleted]sort of variety show, which was quite amusing. Yesterday someone was over to tea and Peter popped in for a short while. Neville Gaigory was also here the other evening. He is going back to India in a few days. So are the Aratoons. Smells
[page break]
Suspiciously of running away, still that’s their business.
Mrs Barkin spent the week-end at our flat. On Saturday Mrs Kock and Christine, the young war Widow had Tea with us. She is very sweet. On Sunday [deleted] I [/deleted] all of us including Steve, had lunch at Kock’s place. We also had Tea there. I then went to see “The Gual[sic] Waltz” again as the music in it is so lovely.
Steve has gone for his last days practical. He only has a Viva now & he will have finished his exam. I hope he gets through, though he looked very seedy just before & during the written papers. He looks quite allright[sic] now.
No more to-day. God bless you & look after you.
Love Dave.

[inserted in different hand] Re my correction on this page, it puts me in mind of a story of a navigator in training over England. When asked to work out his position he handed the result to his superior officer who burst out Good God son by your reckoning we are in the middle of the Sahara! I thought of Dave then! [indecipherable]
I am sending you all Dave’s letters but should be glad to have the ones to me back again.

22nd May 1940.
My darling Dad,
Many thanks for your letter. I am glad to hear you are getting on well. Just as well you didn’t play in the tournament as it would probably have been a sham.
I am getting on very well in the R.A.F. My set of friends is very nice & we have a good time though at this moment we are doing a lot of preliminary training. I was at Uxbridge for about 16 days. We got our uniforms etc. there. From Uxbridge we came here to [deleted] bri [/deleted] Bridgenorth (it is up north) [inserted in different hand] Nonsense! It is on the border of Wales! West [/inserted in different hand]
We are having marching drilling it’s [indecipherable] of which I have done before. I’ve also had Physical training every day so
[page break]
I should be quite tough at the end of it. We should only be at this place a week. I don’t know yet where we go on to from here.
I had a letter from Peter the other day. He is training for the Navy at one of the training Centres.
Mum Olive and I bought the cigarette case (a silver one with R.A.F. wings) a present from you and Mum, thank you as it is very nice. Everyone likes it. It is pure silver & has inscribed in it [deleted] from Mu [/deleted] “Dave from Mum & Dad 1940”.
I had my photo Taken. It is not a very good one but it is better than nothing. Mum will send it on.
No more to-day. God bless & keep you for us. Love [underlined] Dave. [/underlined]

My darling Dad,
We are more or less used to the routine of the station we are now at. It is an operational station & consequently we have quite an easy time. So far we have had no duties to perform. There are some lovely fighter planes here Spitfires & Hurricanes; Also a couple of trainers. We will probably go up for a flip before we leave and are posted.
We were [deleted] posted [/deleted] payed [sic] the other day & decided to Celebrate in Edinburgh. We went to the Scottish Art Exhibition which was very interesting. There were a couple of Royal Academy paintings hanging up. after that we had some Tea and then went to a variety show which was excellent. We were in the stalls for 1/-. A lady behind us bought the three of us a two penny slab of chocolate each. Awfully decent of her. She had a couple
[page break]
of kids with [deleted] us [/deleted] here [sic]. After the show we went dancing to the local night club for 1/6, and had to leave just when things were livening up.
the B.E.F. for all the battering they got put up a damn good show. I still think we will beat Hell out of Hitler & Co before long, even if Mussolini comes in Though I must say Hitler has done pretty well so far.
It is Sunday to-day & most of us are just lazing around the [indecipherable]. I shall not go out for as couple of days. I am conserving my financial power 2/- a day for the strategic moments. Of course I have had a very liberal allowance from Mum so far. I shan’t need any money or not much when I start drawing 6/6 a day.
No more to-day. God bless & keep you for us.
[underlined] Love Dave [/underlined].

R.A.F. Station Drem
9th June, 1940.
My darling Dad,
Thanks for your post cards, they are very attractive. I hope you enjoyed your holidayand are feeling completely fit again.
I am still at this Station in Scotland as apparently there is no room at the observers training school at the moment.
During our first week here we were given no work of any sort to do. Five days ago we were put on fatigues, cleaning up floors etc. Now however we have quite a nice job – Spotting. Everyone Takes two hour periods at looking out for enemy air-craft. There is also a Lewis Gun
[page break]
attached to the post which the man on duty at the observation post will man. We are going to be taught how to use a lewis gun from tomorrow. We shall also have lectures in the identification of various air-craft. It is a much better job than sweeping floors with a broom. All of us are anxious to get on with our real training. This hanging around is a damn nuisance. I am afraid I cannot see any Reason for it, as everybody is yapping about the terrific war effort.
I have been into
[page break]

Edinburgh a couple of times, & rather like it. It is [underlined] not [/underlined] a patch on London though.
Some of us have also been swimming in the sea nearby. The beach is lovely and we [deleted] ha [/deleted] enjoyed it immensely apart from the fact that it keeps you very fit. Yesterday the observers cleared several fields of hay. It was blazing hot so we stripped to the waist. It was grand fun. We also had great fun in the [indecipherable] on the way there and back to the camp. We made a mass [indecipherable] in all the people we passed. It [indecipherable]

anything the B.B.C. dished up.
Outside the camp there is a café called the Parachute. It is a very nice place & we have good fun with the Scotch girls who run it.
On Friday there is an R.A.F. dance to which all of us are going. It should be quite good fun. Incidentally all my friends from the beginning are at this station with me.
Some of us are going swimming to-day. I am rather looking forward to it. No more to-day. God bless & keep you for us.
Love Dave.

R.A.F. [deleted] Hastings [/deleted]
17th June. 1940.
My darling Dad,
Thanks for your letter and all your news. Many happy returns [deleted] of [/deleted] for your birthday. God bless & keep you for us.
Mum Tells[sic] me that there will be no more Air Mails; it is a pity but under present circumstances there is no help for it.
We lest Scotland on Tuesday and arrived in Hastings next day. As we went via London & had a couple of hours spare I popped home for breakfast. Both Mum & Steve were very surprised. We are in Billets at the moment bang on the sea [deleted] front [/deleted] front. It is rather pleasant. We have a terrific amount of work to do. In the mornings instead of P.T. I go for an early morning dip, which is very enjoyable & certainly wakes me up. we then have breakfast. After this a couple of parades, P.T. and the lectures after which we are free.
[page break]
The days end at 5 or 6. We can then go out but must be by our beds by 10 and lights go out at 10.15
The other day there was a Maths grading list, - all people of the same standard to be put in groups so as to make Teaching[sic] easier. I got 100% as the paper was quite simple. We are also to study navigation in a short Time[sic] & the morse code to-day. It should be rather interesting.
I am off to lunch and will complete this letter after it.
Have done some Maths and the morse code. The latter requires quite a bit of concentration. I am now on orderly duty for 24 hrs. – duties to put lights out etc.
The military situation is Terrible[sic]. God help the French. I hope we fight on, whatever the odds are. If the other Democracies or what is left of them don’t come in they will deserve all they will get later – No more To-day. God bless you.
Love [underlined] Dave. [/underlined]

My darling Dad,
I’m awfully sorry I haven’t written for some Time but we have had another change & are working very hard. We spent twelve days at Hasting. It was very pleasant. We did not like the first two days but then got used to it. The programme there was an early morning dip in the sea. This was followed by Parade. We then had maths & signals – the latter is Morse Code – After this P.T. – On Wednesdays we have organised games such as Tennis water-polo, etc . Also a couple of Antigas lectures are thrown in. we have not yet started Navigation but I don’t think it will be long now. After din [sic] we were free to go out. I have acquired quite a habit now of
[page break]
going in for a swim almost everyday.
We are now at Torquay. It is a very picturesque place. I forgot to mention socially Hastings was quite amusing. I did not do much apart from swimming. The programme here is more or less the same as at Hastings. The only difference here is that the R.A.F. have never been here before. The result is that everyone stares at us when we drill or march to the dining Hall. It is very amusing. There are masses of girls here so as soon as the R.A.F. is payed [sic] we shall have to beat the town up. the bathing here is not very good as it is very shallow for a long way. I hear however that there are some very nice places close by.
The weather here is supposed to be very hot & tropical. We have
[page break]
not noticed it so far as we are not having really good weather at the moment.
The Political news is terrible. I cannot understand the attitude Taken up by the French government. They could easily have fought on from their colonies and Taken the fleet, Air force and all available men & materials. All this will be hopelessly out of date by the Time you receive this letter.
Incidentally Cecil one of my best pals at College was at Hastings under training as a pilot. He is now at Torquay. I met him the other day. As I know where he is I shall be seeing a lot of him.
I am here with most of my friends. Half of us our [sic] in the same room. We are billeted in
[page break]
Hotels, run completely by us of course. Our room faces some Tennis Courts and the bay. The view is lovely.
We work very hard here, and am just about all in at the end of the day. I am looking very fit and well Tanned [sic].
At Hastings we had a couple of Air Raid Warnings at Hastings. The night we slept on the Concrete floor of an Air Raid Shelter. Nothing happened & we didn’t here[sic] anything. Anyway we were too sleepy to worry.
Don’t worry about us & keep your chin up.
No more to-day. God bless & keep you for us.
Love Dave. [hand drawn picture of cap]

I am afraid this will get over weight for the Air Mail if I add a sheet. Dave came in on Saturday the 6 th at 10.p.m. looking absolutely fine. His cap had a white bit in front something like in my attempt at drawing, this is to show they are Air Crew & are they proud of it! We gave him a very happy 18 hours & were glad to have him that long. Steve & his friend John Porace were here for the weekend too. We saw him off at Paddington, 5 minutes from here & met some of his lot. Nice boys. All the little mothers sporting their R.A.F. brooches (winged), & smiled bravely, grateful for the brief glimpse of their boys. Dave took back plenty of luck, 50 cigarettes & my tooth paste! Love Baby. [inserted in different hand]

My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letters, the cable & the £2. It was very sweet of you.
As we got some back flying pay a short while back I bought a few things I need badly such as a decent Khaki shirt a shorts & a pair of shoes. The Khaki shirt & shorts are very well cut indeed. I had no difficulty in [deleted] changing [/deleted] cashing the cheque.
I have had several letters from Mum lately, one from Steve & one from my friend Darnie (in Rhodisia) who wrote to England still thinking I was there. Mum forwarded the letter.
You must not worry if you don’t

hear from any of us sometimes, as very often letters take some time. I received one from Mum the other day which was posted three weeks before one I received a week ago. I am so glad to hear the car you got from head office is so nice.
Please [deleted] congratul [/deleted] give my best wishes to Cynthia on her engagement. I hope she will be very happy. Liza the girl who was in Naini, I expect you remember her has also become engaged to a young Scotsman. She was a very swell girl.
I have done quite a bit of motoring the last three afternoons. I went in a friend’s car, an old tourer buick. It is jolly good. She is something like the dodge we had but of course not in anything as good a condition. Still she is a good bus & we get a kick out of her.
My friends and I went to Mossel Bay for New Year. Just the Tuesday & Wednesday. We put up at a hotel. I had a very enjoyable time. As there

was no room in any of the hotels we had two ghastly rooms at the back. we called it the Ritzy Rooms but it didn’t interfere with our fun.
I thought of the three of you at midnight. D.V. there will be better days ahead soon.
On the Wednesday I did some surf riding. It was great fun. You hold the surf board a sort of thin plank and wait till an enormous breaker comes along. As it hits you on the back side you leap forward on to the surf board pressing it hard against the body. If successful you then shoot off towards the shore & are taken right up. incidentally during the whole operation you are never out of your depth.

In the later afternoon we swam again this time at a sheltered inlet known as the point. We had a jolly good time and came back that evening looking as brown as [deleted] t [/deleted] berries.
I took a number of photographs while we were there. I ordered a whole heap of copies to-day & will send them on to you in a couple of days. At the latest in a week. I hope you received the last lot. I sent. They were sent by Air Mail so shouldn’t have taken long. They are fine snaps and you will like them. All three I am sending you shortly are also fine photographs. I at first regretted having bought the camera as the first spools were all utter failures. Since then however I have taken another four spools & they are all excellent. Actually all that really was the matter was that I hadn’t quite got the hang of the various shutter speeds etc. on the camera.
I am getting on with the flying. We know quite a bit of navigation now. We have also started photography from the air & should be night flying shortly.

The flying is interesting, though you get so used to it that one gets quite bored sometimes especially when you are not flying the machine yourself. Still I enjoy it.
The weather lately has been the damned limit. Four days ago the temperature was 1060 in the shade & about 1300 in the sun. we were absolutely grilled. This continued for three days. Great clouds accumulated, the heat was intense. Everything was quiet & then the storm came. There was torrential rain (just as in India) and a terrific wind. One of the lecture rooms had its roof blown off. All the charts etc were ruined (in that room) also One of the [deleted][indecipherable][/deleted] billets last its roof. But everything ended happily. It became much

cooler & to-day we have all felt chilly as the temperature this morning was 590.
Quite a considerable drop.
Mum mentioned that Phil [indecipherable] had sent me a birthday card. Please thank him for me & give him my love.
Lately we have been to a couple of films. The other night we saw “Mr Smith goes to Washington.” I had seen it before in London with Mum & Steve. It is a jolly good show.
At first we were not having too good a time here but now all know a number of people we have had a really good time for Xmas & the New Year. At the moment however most of our friends have gone to Mossel Bay for the holidays. They should be coming back shortly.
I had a game of Tennis before Xmas. The players were rotten at Tennis but very nice people. Take things easy Dad & don’t go injuring yourself through being over zealous at Tennis or anything like that.
No more now, will send the snaps & write in a couple of days. God bless you.
Your loving son Dave.

No 41 AIR SCHOOL.
EAST LONDON.
15th May. 1941.
My darling Dad,
Thanks ever so much for your letter. I am so pleased to hear you liked the wallet. It has not only sentimental value as a present but also value as a S. African Curio.
You should find the Lewis gun most interesting & find fun to fire.
At long last I am a fully trained man. I feel very proud with my Brevet up – the gunners half-wing with A.G. in front. You will see what it looks like from a photograph I shall send shortly. It really feels good being fully qualified. All of us passed thank goodness & our friends in East London are very pleased. Thanks for the cable congratulating me. Also for sending the cash. It was sweet of you Dad.
[page break]
Now that the course is done with we are having a rollicking time. The S. African boys have gone on to their new station but the six of us have remained here, at the moment free of all duties.
I did very well in morse code. The six R.A.F. only had to receive morse at Ten words per minute. I decided to have a shot with the S. African boys. I got 100% at Ten words per minute& 95 1/2% at eighteen words per minute. Not bad considering we only did at the most [deleted] ei [/deleted] six to eight words at home.
We had a qualifying course binge. All the officers turned up and we got cracking. By the end of the evening we were all quite tight. We had some fun, breaking into the officers mess at 4 in the morning & then being tipped out of bed at 5 by some of the fellows including the officer in charge of us. He is one of the whitest men I ever met.
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
There were speeches at the party. I was asked to speak on behalf of the six R.A.F. attached to the course. My speech was short & sweet. Mentioning we did not think much of them at first but having got to know them were damn sorry to be separated from them. It went down well. They are a damn fine crowd of blokes & I was genuinely sorry to be parting from them as we made some good friends.
At the moment I am just about completing a week’s local leave. A friend in town has put me up – He (Desmond) is a grand chap. He has a small sports car which is at my disposal whenever he is not using it. As he goes out with my girls sister it amounts to almost all the time. He has really been damn decent to me. You should see me shooting around in his sports car, its great fun. I have just had the
[page break]
most terrific week. Desmond has six months leave from the Army for business reasons. All his friends (a fine crowd of fellows) are down here on leave & we have been hitting the high spots. – In a big way too. – We are only young once This is properly[sic] the last chance I will get of dashing around as we should be in action before very long so I am making the most of my time. I have a lovely little girl friend here. We have had two terrific quarrels but otherwise we have got on very well indeed. I shall send you a photo of her shortly.
Desmond & my programme at the moment is as follows. Five sets of Tennis every morning a quiet afternoon & then out with our girl friends in the evening. In the evening we usually go to a dance or for a drink somewhere. The S. Africans have really given us a square deal
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
both as regards work & play. This girl friend of mine is really lovely Dad. I am sure you would like her. She is the second girl I have liked in this country. That is nearly [deleted] [indecipherable] [/deleted] 8 months. Not too bad considering we have been to four places. I am very particular these days.
The other morning I played golf for the second time. I was helped this time & got on famously. It is amazing what a difference it makes if someone tells you what to do.
Some of the photographs I have taken really are wizard. A number of them are exposures taken at night. They are incredibly good. I shall send you some as soon as possible.
I get on very well with some of Desmonds friends who are
[page break]
down here this week. They take me swimming & all over the place. Some of the parties we have had have been really grand fun.
My girl friends’ name is baby & we do awfully well together at dancing. You ought to see us.
At the moment we are awaiting posting. If you don’t hear from me for some time you will know I am on the move again. It’s funny I hate moving once I get settled in a place but one gets used to anything these days.
The weather has been ideal. Perfect for Tennis, golf & swimming. These latter keep me fit dispite the late nights.
No more to-day, Dad darling. I will write again in a couple of days & try & send some snaps.
God bless you. Lots of love
from your ever loving son
Dave.

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
I hope you are all well. I am quite well and happy and so is Stevie. Thank you very much for the two letters. Thank you very much for the parcel also all the things in it. Yes I can write with the huge pencils. Yes, I would like to play the Piano. I am not having the party on Saturday I am having it on Friday because Mrs Cox is going out, but I am getting the presents on Saturday. I am writing a letter on Sunday with the huge pencil. I have still got some of the old Swan-ink. I am learning 12times table now. I will try to write a long letter. Next month it is the Pujas. The boys play marbles alot [sic] now. We still play hockey. I play with my own stick but Stevie’s stick is broken. It rains nearly every day.
[page break]
[circled 2]
