Interview with Maria Domanovszky
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Maria Domanovszky (b. 1937) recounts how she threw herself into a swampy ditch when under fire and how she lay down praying and hoping to get back home safely. Describes German soldiers with torn and dirty uniforms escaping from a burning forest. Tells memories of the first encounter with black American soldiers: they were friendly, looked well-dressed and threw chocolate to a crowd of village children. When the adults standing nearby realised that the soldiers were no cause of alarm, they asked for chocolate as well.

Interview with Marialuigia Buffadossi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Marialuigia Buffadossi remembers her wartime life in the Lombardy region. Born in a low-class neighbourhood with poor-quality housing, she first worked as shorthand clerk for a solicitor, and then was employed by a major bank. Remembers her employer’s wife, who had San Marino citizenship and was, therefore, able to obtain un-rationed supplies. Describes her evacuee life in Cernobbio, stressing her handsome salary and enjoyable social life in various resorts on the shores of Lake Como. Remembers how she was troubled by not knowing the fate of her relatives still in Milan. Describes taking shelter inside the bank vault, where she passed the time studying for a teaching qualification. Recalls Pippo and maintains that it was the name of the pilot. Describes the bombing of a church and the subsequent fire. Mentions different attitudes toward bombing: her father, a warden, was fearful and timid; her mother took a resolute and fearless approach, to the point of avoiding the shelter in the basement. Affirms that having been an evacuee greatly increased her resilience, and also strengthen her desire to lead an independent life.

Interview with Marisa Bianchi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Marisa Bianchi remembers her wartime years at Sesso, a rural hamlet in the Reggio Emilia province. Stresses the abundance of locally farmed food and emphasises how billeted German troops were friendly and supportive, even if she and her family had to work for them. Recalls "Pippo" coming over every day at the same time. Curses it for the fear it caused and describes two episodes connected with its menacing presence: being machine-gunned while working and the sight of her house under attack, an incident in which a relative died as the consequence of emotional shock. Explains her revulsion of Fascists, feared for their brutality and recollects the killing of her cousin on the last day of war. Describes wartime episodes: Fascists executing four partisans and torturing suspects; Germans shooting people on the Crostolo bank; a young worker being shot by mistake for carrying a bundle mistaken for a bomb. Recalls providing accommodation to evacuees from Reggio Emilia and the widespread enthusiasm at the end of the war.

Interview with Maurizio Ghiretti
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Maurizio Ghiretti describes his early life at Monticelli Terme, a small town near Parma. He remembers various episodes of wartime hardships: food shortages, a tree taken down at night for firewood, men hiding in concealed rooms to avoid roundups, and how his father and other men escaped capture because they were forewarned by a German soldier. Describes how they ran for shelter in a nearby ditch covered by bushes, and how they passed the time there. Explains the perception of bombings among civilians, stressing how they were generally seen as the price to pay for being liberated. Mentions the effects of different operations on various cities in the Po river valley and describes bright target indicators descending on nearby bridges. Recounts hearing a siren which, in his uncle’s words, sounded like a donkey braying. Recounts of Jewish women and children being guarded in a hotel before being sent to the Fossoli concentration camp. Remembers various anecdotes of Allied prisoners of war, some working as farmhands, others building the first sewage system. Stresses how his parents never kept him in the dark about the war situation and he was always abreast of what was going on, to the point that even the children took political sides. Describes the fall of the fascist regime mentioning propaganda murals being desecrated with faeces. Recounts the end of the war when cheering crowds welcomed the Allies by waving hawthorn brushes at them, which reminded him of Palm Sunday. Mentions briefly the post-war political situation.

Tells of how they met at school and always kept in touch through the war, until they married on October 7th, 1944. She remembers working at the Bristol telephone exchange on D-Day. Arthur took on various jobs before volunteering for the RAF in 1941. He initially went to America to train as a fighter pilot, but then was moved on to bombers. He was stationed at RAF Pocklington on 102 Squadron, with which he flew thirty-nine operations. Remembers when Arthur and his crew had to abort what was to be their last operation and land at RAF Manston because of a widespread oil leak. From 25 September to 7 October, Arthur and his crew dropped fuel canisters over Brussels to supply the British army with petrol. Tells of when a bee got stuck in the instrument panel, jamming it. Towards the end of the war, from February 1945 to August 1946, Arthur was posted to Transport Command, flying Dakotas to the Middle East and the Far East, in preparation for Operation Tiger. Mentions him being awarded the DFC by post and the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air. Arthur left the RAF in 1946, went back to civilian life for ten years and then joined the Guinea police air wing.

Interview with Neil Harris
Neil Harris wanted to join the RAF because he was looking for an exciting life experience and an opportunity for further education. He started as a flight mechanic before training as a pilot. Remembers being trained in different locations across the country, from Brighton to Kinloss, in Scotland. Mentions a particular night, when they took off late and had to catch up with the bomber stream. Flew with 48 and 578 Squadron. Shares his memories of D-Day, when he was targeting a gun battery in Northern France. Remembers his life after the war, when he was sent to Indonesia in the 60s during the Borneo confrontation.

Interview with Osvaldo Gramegna
Osvaldo Gramegna (b. 1937) remembers the bombings of Turin. Mentions civilians initially fleeing along the railway during alarms and explains how, in hindsight, it was foolish behaviour. Anecdotes of his evacuee life at Casalgrasso: ineffective civil defence practices; how Germans planned to set the town ablaze, and the enormous value of a sowing machine, which his mother considered 'even better than a husband'. Provides an account of the bombing of the Lingotto marshalling yard (4 June 1944) mentioning its poor accuracy and the technical reasons for that.

Paolo Ferroni (b. 1937) remembers the bombings of Rome stressing the ubiquitous noise of sirens wailing and the psychological distress associated with it. Contrasts night bombings, when civilians dashed to improvised dugouts nearby and day attacks during which they headed to the overcrowded San Giovanni Basilica, hoping that its religious status would afford some degree of protection. Describes passers-by being strafed and mentions hospitals marked with red crosses on the roof.

Interview with Peter Parker
Peter Parker grew up in Gainsborough. He had hoped to be a pilot but was unsuccessful, however as he had taught himself Morse code in his shed at home he trained as a wireless operator and became an instructor. He was posted to RAF Yatesbury and trained hundreds of wireless operators during his posting. After the war he returned to work in Gainsborough for Jackson Shipley, a builder’s merchants company, while also being a Civil Defence Instructor.

Interview with Philip Peel
Mike Peel was a Lancaster pilot and served on two squadrons before becoming a prisoner of war late in 1944. He was an active sportsman and played tennis in his eighties but unfortunately is no longer with us. Using his logbook, letters, and recollecting his father’s anecdotes, Mike’s son Phillip gives a detailed account of his RAF career. He describes Mike’s amusement at being awarded a scholarship from the RAF to study navigation, but when he enlisted, he somehow ended up as a pilot. Phillip describes the path taken from gaining his “wings”, to operational training, before finally joining 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron in September 1944, and then onto 227 Squadron. Various operations are described, including one in which his crew was mistakenly declared lost. As they were returning to the station a thump was felt throughout the aircraft, as a bomb had failed to drop and was rolling around the bomb bay. Air Traffic Control instructed them to return to the North Sea to drop the bomb, however, no one told the squadron, and upon landing they discovered they had been removed from the squadron boards. Eventually, Mike’s aircraft was shot down. He evaded capture for several days and headed for Switzerland. Unable to swim across the Rhine river because of the cold temperature, he was captured when he tried to cross via a bridge. Interrogation was followed by transportation to Stalag Luft 1, where he remained until the arrival of the Russian army. Letters describe first hand the brutal and barbaric behaviour of the Russians, which was far worse than anything the Germans had undertaken.

Bombing, Aerial
Pietro Cosma (b. 1927) remembers the bombings of Milan and recollects two wartime anecdotes: the execution of a man in front of his home and Benito Mussolini’s corpse on public display in Piazzale Loreto. Describes wartime hardships: losses; food shortages; sleeping in a roofless house under the rain. Comments on the difference between the received narrative on the resistance and what he eye-witnessed, stresses the number of eleventh-hour partisans, describes the shift in perception after the end of the conflict, and mentions the ambiguous attitude towards war remembrance. Interview with Pietro Varesi
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Pietro Varesi describes wartime life in Pavia, focussing on the Borgo neighbourhood. He mentions the Ticino bridges as primary targets for bombers; recalls bent shop shutters and debris on the streets; stresses the limited accuracy of bombing and the damage to civilian buildings. Describes how ineffectual anti-aircraft fire was and remembers playing on anti-aircraft guns when the gunners were eating and drinking at a nearby country inn. Contrasts the reaction of adults being frightened and alarmed, with the care-free attitudes of youngsters. Mentions street urchins involved in dangerous games often with disastrous consequences. Criticises makeshift shelters, deemed tantamount to death traps. Recalls various wartime episodes: being a member of fascist organisations while his father was an opponent of the fascist regime, deserters, repression of partisan activities, corpses hidden in a church, 'Pippo' flying at night, disrupted communications, improvised footbridges, rationing, the black market, and food pilfering. Describes men quickly exchanging fascist uniforms with red handkerchiefs at the end of the war. Reflects on the bombing war and stresses the duality of liberators / tormentors.

Interview with Renate Rothaler
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Renate Rothaler (b. 1937) recounts her wartime experiences in Gotha, where she lived with her mother and sister while her father was drafted. Mentions a bombing in spring 1944 when she watched ‘silver birds’ that soon started to drop bombs, a sight that prompted her mother to rush the whole family down to the cellar. Mentions the Easter 1944 bombing of their school - which was then used as a hospital - and explains how a bomb hit the staircase without causing harm. Explains that when the bombing war grew in intensity, her mother packed every day a picnic basket and caught the train to the Thuringian Forest. They spent their time playing and reading the books of the local novelist Gustav Freytag, works which gave Renate a basic historical knowledge.

Interview with Renato Cardarelli
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Renato Cardarelli (b. 1923) remembers his youth as an altar boy and then sexton at the church of San Paolo in Rome. He mentions his decision to enter the seminary at 18, where he spent two years, and explains how he was deemed temporarily unfit for military service. He describes the bombing of the San Lorenzo neighbourhood in Rome while working for the land registry office. He remembers seeing Pope Pius XII blessing the crowd. He emphasised how the scenes of devastation still haunt him and mentions the fate of relatives who were trapped under a collapsed building.

Interview with Renato Maldarelli
Renato Maldarelli (b. 1937) describes the 1943 bombing of Naples. Remembers being woken up by the alarm, his mother wrapping him in a blanket and going down to a cold shelter. Doesn’t recall the fear of being buried alive under his collapsed home, a prospect which much troubled his mother. Recalls a lawyer who never used the shelter because he enjoyed watching searchlights trying to cone aircraft, and describes how he did so until was hit by a shell splinter and almost died. Mentions a house hit by German artillery and a fire exchange between Germans and partisans in the Capodimonte e Materdei neighbourhoods.

Interview with Richard Suchenwirth
Richard Suchenwirth recalls his wartime memories as a Flakhelfer in Pasing, a district of Munich. He tells of his father who was the author of three books on the Luftwaffe, the founder of the Austrian Nazi Party, a political orator and initial supporter of Hitler’s idea of creating a single German state. He remembers being drafted as a Flakhelfer in February 1943 and the pride he took in defending the city even though anti-aircraft fire was ineffective. He mentions the high death toll of the March 1943 bombing raid, in which his house was destroyed, and tells how Russian forced labourers were deployed at his unit. He recollects being liberated by the Americans, with kind black troops handing out chocolate and his father spending three years as a prisoner of war but being treated humanely. He mentions various episodes of his father’s life: having a bust of Hitler which his father used to slap in moments of rage when he would call Hitler a ‘carpet chewer’. He mentions various wartime anecdotes; two aunts who died in different bombing raids; the capture and attempted lynching of an American pilot; food rationing; bartering cigarettes for a typewriter; an incendiary device hitting his house. Richard Suchenwirth describes how his brother, a Wehrmacht soldier on the Eastern front, was taken prisoner by the Americans and then handed over to the Russians.

Interview with Robert Boocock
Robert Boocock spent three and a half years in Japanese prisoner of war camps. As a young boy, he had a part time job in delivering ladies’ hats. He was conscripted into the Air Force and initially trained to become a wireless operator. After completing his training, he was posted to 242 Squadron on Hurricanes. He then was sent on a ship from Scotland to Java on the 7th of December 1941. Three weeks after getting to Java, he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and sent to a POW camp. From Java he was then sent to Changi and from there to a coal mine in Japan, where he stayed until the end of the war. He was then taken by train from there to near Nagasaki, on the day the bomb was dropped, and evacuated on an American troopship. He gives a detailed account of his experience. Recalls harsh punishment inflicted by the guards and food shortage. Remembers reading a book to the other prisoners in the camp. After the war, he worked for a chemical company before starting his own business.
