Interview with Angelo Cassia
Angelo Cassia (b. 1926) gives an account of the bombing of Turin in the summer of 1943. Mentions the use of a shelter in the basement until it became clear that it wouldn’t withstand a blast wave, therefore trapping the occupants inside. Describes how they resorted to an unfinished sewer that afforded a greater deal of protection. Mentions a underground reinforced concrete shelter beneath a local fascist headquarters, explaining how it was deserted after the fall of the fascist regime in July 1943 and was used by locals until the armistice of 8 September 1943, when they were forced to vacate them.

Explains how the aircraft missed the train station and hit the nearby town centre; maintains that the pilot was drunk. Describes three bombs falling into the courtyard of the elementary school where her father worked as caretaker. Explains how the explosions didn't wake him up at first whereas his father, who served in the First World War, was immediately aware of what had happened. Describes the damage done by the bombs and points out how lucky they were for escaping unharmed just 15 meters away from the crater.

Interview with Vittorio Finauri
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Vittorio Finauri (b. 1931) remembers the first bombing of Foligno on 22 November 1943. Explains that it was completely unexpected and people were caught unprepared, so bombs aimed at nearby barracks resulted in a heavy death toll. Describes how some friends were accidentally killed while playing with a hand grenade left in a house previously occupied by British soldiers, stresses that he survived by pure chance and mentions how the act prompted him to reflect on his faith. Remembers his mixed feelings towards the Allies at the end of the war and explains how he had hoped the conflict would have ended differently.

Interview with Angelo Bencina
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Angelo Bencina recalls wartime memories in Monfalcone: a cave being modified as a shelter; the descent of bright red and white target indicators at night; a bomb which nearly missed him and didn’t explode; Window radio counter-measures being dropped. Describes how incendiaries hit his parents’ house, which suffered heavy damage and explains that he has kept a spent fragment as a keepsake ever since. Retells the story of his mother being caught-up in a bombing attack with a friend and how they survived by hiding behind a large tree. Remembers American soldiers giving chocolate to him which was difficult to chew. Describes how he and his friends used to salvage shell cases and military equipment for their scrap value and with the money they would buy cinema tickets and ice creams. Stresses his anti-Italian sentiments and his appreciation for German culture, a position compounded by his admiration for the Hapsburg Empire and a keen interest in the history of the First World War. Mentions how he avoids talking of war memories with his relatives, who are avid pacifists.

Interview with Santina Colombo
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Santina Colombo describes her early life in a family of farmers, her father a fervent socialist. She mentions the start of the war announced on the radio and gives a detailed account of civilian life in wartime Milan: scarce food, growing vegetables on small plots, home rearing of geese, and the constant fear for the fate of enlisted relatives. Describes bombings and the rush for safety in a nearby basement, men and women praying together during the alarm, and hugging each other after the all-clear signal. Recalls the constant fear that her home would be destroyed and the trauma of seeing corpses on the road. Mentions the Cascina Bellaria killing and describes how her husband, a partisan, narrowly escaped death. Describes fascist violence, leading to acts of revenge after the war. Mentions her aunt and cousin living with the Germans, the latter to become pregnant. Speaks of aircrew as odious and detestable, and scorns on Mussolini and Hitler.

Interview with Pietro Cosma
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Pietro Cosma (b. 1927) remembers the bombings of Milan and recollects two wartime anecdotes: the execution of a man in front of his home and Benito Mussolini’s corpse on public display in Piazzale Loreto. Describes wartime hardships: losses; food shortages; sleeping in a roofless house under the rain. Comments on the difference between the received narrative on the resistance and what he eye-witnessed, stresses the number of eleventh-hour partisans, describes the shift in perception after the end of the conflict, and mentions the ambiguous attitude towards war remembrance. Recalls being accused by his fellow workers of being a fascist.

Interview with Maurizio Ghiretti
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Maurizio Ghiretti describes his early life at Monticelli Terme, a small town near Parma. He remembers various episodes of wartime hardships: food shortages, a tree taken down at night for firewood, men hiding in concealed rooms to avoid roundups, and how his father and other men escaped capture because they were forewarned by a German soldier. Describes how they ran for shelter in a nearby ditch covered by bushes, and how they passed the time there. Explains the perception of bombings among civilians, stressing how they were generally seen as the price to pay for being liberated. Mentions the effects of different operations on various cities in the Po river valley and describes bright target indicators descending on nearby bridges. Recounts hearing a siren which, in his uncle’s words, sounded like a donkey braying. Recounts of Jewish women and children being guarded in a hotel before being sent to the Fossoli concentration camp. Remembers various anecdotes of Allied prisoners of war, some working as farmhands, others building the first sewage system. Stresses how his parents never kept him in the dark about the war situation and he was always abreast of what was going on, to the point that even the children took political sides. Describes the fall of the fascist regime mentioning propaganda murals being desecrated with faeces. Recounts the end of the war when cheering crowds welcomed the Allies by waving hawthorn brushes at them, which reminded him of Palm Sunday. Mentions briefly the post-war political situation.
