Interview with Pietro Cosma
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Pietro Cosma (b. 1927) remembers the bombings of Milan and recollects two wartime anecdotes: the execution of a man in front of his home and Benito Mussolini’s corpse on public display in Piazzale Loreto. Describes wartime hardships: losses; food shortages; sleeping in a roofless house under the rain. Comments on the difference between the received narrative on the resistance and what he eye-witnessed, stresses the number of eleventh-hour partisans, describes the shift in perception after the end of the conflict, and mentions the ambiguous attitude towards war remembrance. Recalls being accused by his fellow workers of being a fascist.

Interview with Tino Luparia
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Tino Luparia (b. 1930) chronicles the first daylight bombing of Turin which was aimed at the SPA industries, then a defence contractor. Describes the effects of a massive unexploded bomb which pierced all floors of a building and stopped immediately before reaching the shelter. Mentions the sight of half a horse carcass, which was immediately taken away and then used as food. Contrasts daytime precision bombing with night bombing, which targets indiscriminately over a large area.

World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Vittorio Finauri (b. 1931) remembers the first bombing of Foligno on 22 November 1943. Explains that it was completely unexpected and people were caught unprepared, so bombs aimed at nearby barracks resulted in a heavy death toll. Describes how some friends were accidentally killed while playing with a hand grenade left in a house previously occupied by British soldiers, stresses that he survived by pure chance and mentions how the act prompted him to reflect on his faith. Remembers his mixed feelings towards the Allies at the end of the war and explains how he had hoped the conflict would have ended differently.

Osvaldo Gramegna (b. 1937) remembers the bombings of Turin. Mentions civilians initially fleeing along the railway during alarms and explains how, in hindsight, it was foolish behaviour. Anecdotes of his evacuee life at Casalgrasso: ineffective civil defence practices; how Germans planned to set the town ablaze, and the enormous value of a sowing machine, which his mother considered 'even better than a husband'. World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Aldo Magnaghi (b. 1927) remembers the bombings of Milan and explains how his house was not directly hit but rather heavily damaged by blast waves. He describes phosphorus loaded incendiaries, their effects on wooden structures, and how civilians easily put them out by using sand. He emphasises how 70% of all the houses in Milan were damaged and remembers how his neighbourhood was surrounded by countryside at that time. He mentions the August 1943 bombings of Lambrate and Greco marshalling yards and alludes to the bombing of the primary school at Gorla, the latter resulting in a heavy death toll.

Interview with Umberto Veroli
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Umberto Veroli (b. 1933) recollects wartime memories when his father was an electrical engineer: living close to power substations; a kitten killed by an electric arc; Germans forcing workers to remove transformers and smash meters. He describes how his father was tasked with repairing a main transmission line running along the Adriatic coast which had been damaged by heavy bombing. He reminisces on the image of him seated on top of unexploded bombs in order to to persuade the repair team that they must not be feared.

Gianfranco Nardi (b. 1933) recalls the first bombing of Cesenatico in 1944, a night action carried out by 'Pippo'. Explains how the aircraft missed the train station and hit the nearby town centre; maintains that the pilot was drunk. Describes three bombs falling into the courtyard of the elementary school where her father worked as caretaker. Explains how the explosions didn't wake him up at first whereas his father, who served in the First World War, was immediately aware of what had happened. Tells how they stayed at the neighbours house that night, a family that had their own reinforced concrete shelter. Describes the damage done by the bombs and points out how lucky they were for escaping unharmed just 15 meters away from the crater.

Interview with Alessandro Novellini
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Alessandro Novellini (b. 1932) remembers the bombings of Turin and mentions different shelters in the city: the one in the basement of his house and the much bigger one at Piazza Risorgimento, built in 1943 when the tide of war was turning in favour of the Allies. Chronicles the bombing of 13 July 1943, when almost one thousand people were killed. Mentions the sky turned red by the fires and the effects of a blast wave. Talks of the Piazza Risorgimento shelter, deemed much safer it being a reinforced concrete underground structure. Explains how the first shelters were those in public offices and in the town hall, intended for Fascist top brass, when others had to fend for themselves. Remembers seeing formations of 30 to 50 aircraft dropping bombs over the city.

Interview with Günter Lucks
World War (1939-1945)
Bombing, Aerial
Günter Lucks (b. 1925) describes how he was forced to join the Hitler Youth in 1939, an event that caused a great deal of disturbance in a family of strong communist background. When his parents moved out because of his father’s job as aircraft engineer, he and his brother stayed with his aunt in Hamburg. There he was caught in the 27 July 1943 bombing, when ‘the term Firestorm was born’. Describes high capacity bombs and mentions incendiaries loaded with sticky substances and phosphorus; mentions the desperate but futile attempts to extinguish the flames in the attic of their house and recounts how his brother went off to search for their aunt, only to meet his death in the firestorm. Explains how he fled from the burning building and describes the time he spent in derelict air shelters, begging for bread; his search for his brother among the dead bodies and the encounter with a Wehrmacht search and rescue team which accused him of looting corpses. Narrates how he reached the university, where he received some food and a ticket to Czechoslovakia, where he eventually reunited with his parents. Mentions his mother’s trip back to Hamburg searching for his brother.
