My own darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter and all your news. This is the first real chance I have had of writing as Steve & I cycled back for the weekend. Steve to stay. We were sorry to hear you had [deleted fragment] an attack of flu and are relieved to hear you are much better.
The international situation does not look very bright. I am going to volunteer for the R.A.F. in the event of war breaking out. I shall go to the recruiting depot to-day and ask them to notify me if I can get with the R.A.F. as a pilot in the event of war being declared. London seems to be well prepared this time at any rate in comparison with the last crisis.
We are both looking and feeling very fit. We are also well tanned and have hardened a lot [deleted] from [/deleted] through roughing it as we have done, the past few weeks. I shall only go back for a very short time now. The work is not too hard. We have lately been picking plums and will do so for a little while now. We are paying for half the price of our bikes, so for my 21st you & Mum are
[page break]
giving me a good cigarette [inserted] case [/inserted] as it is a thing that will last for a good deal of years, whereas a bike will not.
We have some photos which we will send to you when they are developed. Also some postcard photos of Steve, Cecil & I standing with our bikes at Clacton. – The bikes save us 80 each time we come to London for the week-end and 20 each time we go to Clacton for the from the farm.
Peter was over to see me on Saturday after I had phoned him and let him know I was in town. I am going after lunch to see Mr Moore my old tutor. He seemed very pleased when I phoned him.
No more to-day. God bless & keep you and bring you back safely to us. Look after yourself
With lots of love & kisses from your
loving son
[underlined] David [/underlined].

My own darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter and all your news.
Soon after the exam Ronnie and I applied for jobs on a farm as I told you. Our applications have been accepted. We leave town tomorrow. We get 34/6 a week. Board & lodging costs approximately 25/- a week so that leaves 10/-. Still it will be a novel experience, and will build our bodies up. Also we will spend much less money on pleasure than we would in town. The place we are going to is Ipswich about 70 miles from London. [deleted fragment] I am glad we got the jobs, as Steve will also be away off and on and it will mean Mummy will have a long rest, which is just what she needs.
Yes Dad keep your chin up, please God we will all be together again soon. Things (I mean as regards our careers) should be much clearer in about a year.
I played Peter in tennis the other day
[page break]
and we enjoyed it. Day before yesterday, I went to a sherry party at Peter’s place and we had a very nice time. Cecil also went and a few others [deleted] so [/deleted] I knew.
Yesterday I went to the Harvey’s and Helen, Basil, Winnie, Freddie, Dora and I went to a play “While Parents Sleep” at a place in Edgeware Road. It was absolutely marvellous. We then went back to their place and had an amusing party. I went over and said goodbye to them this afternoon. I also went with them and Steve to Mrs Dawsons to say goodbye. Steve went off to the flicks, Mum is still at Mrs Dawsons and I am about to go to a flick.
John left for India the other day. I think he enjoyed staying with us. He thanked Mum warmly for the way in which she looked after him.
The results will be out in about 11 or 12 days. D.V. I have passed. No more to-day. God bless & keep you and bring you back safely to us. With lots of love & kisses, from your loving son

My own darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter and all your news.
I don’t smoke because I think it is manly or anything like that. Anyway I am a very light smoker. When I am not pipe-smoking I only smoke about four or five cigarettes a day. When I smoke a pipe I hardly smoke any cigarettes and a pipe does not harm your mind. Yes my main trouble is I lack concentration, I must really make a greater effort in future. As for drinking the only time I drink is when I go to a party & that is not very often.
A friend of mine was at a [deleted] su [/deleted] dinner the other night & the Vice-dean of Laws was there. He asked this boy if he knew anyone in Laws & Buf (my friend) said he knew Boldy. So this Vice dean said, Oh! David Boldy, a good fellow, he does everything, plays all games. A jolly chap. Buf then asked if he thought I would pass the exam. and Mr Phillips, the Vice Dean said I should get through. I am working steadily and will do my best to pass.
[page break]
On Wednesday I played tennis for the 2nd [indecipherable word]. We lost to University College, five matches to four. Peter & I were 2nd [indecipherable word] and we won two out of three matches, our first & 3rd [indecipherable word] winning only one each. [deleted] To [/deleted] On Wednesday I am playing in the 2nd again at Redding [sic] v Redding University [sic] – I am Captain of the 2nd [indecipherable word] this week.
Mum will not be writing for a day or two as Uncle Bob & Norman are here with us. They are going to see the panda at the zoo tomorrow and the day after are going down to Mrs [indecipherable name beginning May-] where Aunty Maisie is at present. You know the people we met at Aunty Maisie’s at Coronation time, Raechel [sic] & Kaykay etc.
I am expecting my 3rd [indecipherable word] instructions for the Evening News, any time now. I have drawn a horse in the Kemsing Derby Sweep. Romeo II. If he comes 1st 2nd or 3rd I stand to win £3, £2 or £1 respectively. Baby Norman has also drawn a horse, Fox Cub. So listen well.
I hope Mrs Joseph’s & Aunty Polly’s operations will be successful. No more to-day.
God bless & keep you and bring you back safely to us. With lots of love & kisses from your loving son [underlined] Dave [/underlined].

My own darling Dad,
Thank you very much for your letter and all your news. I am glad to hear the dogs are getting on O.K. & hope Prince’s mange gets O.K. soon.
We got our Criminal Law marks to-day and you will be glad to hear I came third with 55 the highest mark being 60. So now I have got through in Roman Law, Criminal law and English legal system with 46%, 55% and 58% respectively which is jolly good. There is only Constitutional law left & I think I have failed in that. I shall work it up. I am now working steadily. Everybody, I mean all my friends are surprised at my results.
I now smoke a pipe, very manly! We went to Aunty Maisie’s on Sunday and had a pleasant day. It was only the third day I had had my pipe, but I was smoking it so expertly that Aunty Maisie thought I had had it for a long time.
I suppose Mum must have told you [deleted] about [/deleted] that Aunty Maisie and Uncle Bob would probably sell up Bosky Dell.
Yesterday I went to Mitcham for the heats. I did not come anywhere in the 100 yds. I scratched from
[page break]
the rest of the events because I slipped in the 100 yds (at a false start) and pulled a muscle slightly and furthermore I had done no training so it was not worth straining myself.
I am playing singles tomorrow with Cecil, my partner in the “Evening News” doubles. On Sunday Cecil, Peter, Ronnie & I are playing doubles.
I am going to Helen’s birthday party tomorrow night. Helen is Dora’s sister. It will be my first real outing since I came back from Folkestone, almost a month.
You will also be glad to hear that the first batch of Conscripts are to be called up on June 30th, just after my exams so it won’t interfere with my studies.
Laws table tennis is getting on fine. Our Champion [indecipherable word] is back. His leg is still bad but he plays a bit and if his leg does not give way we should pull off the finals on Thursday.
No more to-day. Love to Mrs Joseph. God bless & keep you and bring you back safely to us. With lots of love & kisses from your loving son
[underlined] David [/underlined].

My own darling Dad,
Thank you very much for your letter and all your news. I have settled down now and am working steadily. The test is on Thursday.
I hope the poor driver can get another job. But there was nothing else for it. As if you save the car expenses that will probably cover your [underlined] fair [/underlined] [inserted] fare [/inserted] here. (this [indecipherable word]!)
I [deleted] sent in the entries for the “Evening News” tennis this evening. Singles and doubles. In the doubles I am not playing with [indecipherable name] as I mentioned in my last letter but with another friend of mine Cecil King. The table tennis faculty final is to be played off sometime next week.
On Sunday, Mum, Steve & I went to the flicks and saw “Café Society” & “The Ware Case”. Both of them were very good indeed. The best [deleted] performance [/deleted] programme we have seen for a long time. Last evening Uncle Martin gave us a look up, but did not stay long. [symbol] College has reopened and what with lectures etc we are kept very busy now thank goodness.
It has become much colder these last few days and we have had a spot of rain. But on the whole
[inserted] [symbol] What nonsense! [indecipherable word] came in about 7.30 for supper to which Martin stayed. He was here from 5 to 9 o’clock! [/inserted]
[page break]
the weather is still good.
The European situation is not very bright, though I should not think there will be a war in the near future as I don’t think Hitler & Mussolini will risk war to get what they want if they cannot get it by mere threats.
I believe King’s are having three hard courts made, which will be a godsend as the present grass courts are the last word. I think they are much worse than the ones we had in [indecipherable place name]. If I play at Mitcham (King’s grounds) it works out so much cheaper as the courts are free.
No more to-day. Love to Mrs Joseph. God bless & keep you and bring you back safely to us. With lots of love & kisses from your loving son
[underlined] David [/underlined].

My own darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter and all [deleted] your [/deleted] the news. Thanks for your good wishes Dad, if it comes off it will be a God-send, if not I will have lost nothing. To-day one of our lecturers gave us some advice. “The intermediate is passed during the “Easter Vacation”. I shall take the advice & work very hard for this 4 or 5 weeks vacation.
You will be very pleased to hear that I have got my colours for Hockey. We had a game on Wednesday against University College. We lost 2-1. They had one or two regulars missing, not their best. We had two of our best forwards and Dennis the right back not [deleted] miss [/deleted] playing. I think we did very well.
Laws played [indecipherable word] in table tennis the other day. We won 13-12. We were down 12-8 and we won the last five games. It was a splendid effort. We are now in the finals. which are to be played off first thing next term. We [deleted] shall p [/deleted] shall probably have our best players playing next term. I must say the laws faculty has bucked up no end.
I went and so [sic] my tutor to-day. I discussed
[page break]
my work with him then we had quite a friendly chat. He is awfully nice.
We listened in to Chamberlain’s speech tonight and were bucked no end to note the firm line it took. I think Hitler’s occupation of Czecho-Slovakia [sic] is the damned limit. Hitler will bump up against something hard one of these days.
The Law term ended to-day. On Thursday we are going to the end of term dance. It is in dress. I am probably taking Dora. I phoned her up this [deleted] morning [/deleted] evening and will probably take her out tomorrow evening. She is very sweet. I will send you a snap of the two of us walking along Piccadilly at half-past ten at night taken by one of those street photographers. Considering the circumstances the snap is quite good.
We have had quite a mild winter excepting that dreadful [indecipherable word] during Xmas.
Aunty Renee left yesterday after quite an enjoyable stay. Molly was here [deleted] [indecipherable fragment] [/deleted] yesterday for supper.
No more to-day. Love to Mrs Joseph. God bless & keep you and bring you back safely to us.
With lots of love & kisses from your loving son

My darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter and all your news. The two attractive girls didn’t turn up. Still since then I have been making headway in other directions.
In the first Round Cup match a week ago we beat Battersea Polytechnic 4-2. This Wednesday we meet Imperial College in the 2nd Round & if we beat them we go to the semi-final. Last Wednesday we played against Westminster College who have not been beaten this season. We were leading 2-0 when the game was [deleted] stop [/deleted] abandoned owing to bad weather. Yesterday in the morning I played [indecipherable word] hockey. King’s won 11-4. I was playing goal-keeper back & dribbled the whole field and scored a goal. In the afternoon we played the [indecipherable word] 1st match against Staines I who we beat 2-1. Since the Team has been reorganised and Prince & I (both from India) have played backs with the exception of the first game in which we played we have not lost a game.
After the hockey I came home, had dinner and
[page break]
went in to the informal dance at [indecipherable name] Square. I had a lovely time. Some other law students from King’s were there and also one of two girls doing law with us.
On Thursday I went for a fitting of my tails. The man remarked that it looked as if it was going to be a good fit. It certainly fitted well. I go for a second fitting on Wednesday.
We have had a stroke of luck. As students were wanted for the filming of “Good Bye Mr Chips” [sic] Steve got in with some Mary’s fellows and so did I. We went to Denham on Friday and tried on various clothes. It took us the whole day but was worth it as we received £1 10 each salary [deleted] as extras [/deleted] As we are extras i.e. take part in the crowd scenes etc. I don’t know when we go again. If it is this Monday or Wednesday, I shan’t go as it clashes with two hockey cup matches, otherwise I shall. We may probably make about £10 each out of this.
No more to-day. Love to Mrs Joseph. God bless & keep you & bring you back safely soon to us,
With lots of love & kisses
from your loving son

My own darling Dad,
Thanks very much for your letter, cable and all your news. The Peace news is a relief but I still think the [deleted] dem [/deleted] Democracies have once more given way to the Dictators. Hitler’s next aim is probably Scotland! He’ll get that too if he tries hard enough! Chamberlain says he has brought Peace with honour. I agree with the peace part but fail entirely to see where the honour comes in.
I got a letter yesterday from the Dean saying that owing to the uncertainty of the international situation College will open a week late.
These last few days we have been viewing flats and going to the flicks. We have seen, “In Old Chickago” [sic] which was very good, “Frou Frou” Louise [sic] Rainer which was also very good and a couple of others. I am at last feeling much better and have practically got over the effects of the exam.
When the situation was serious I
[page break]
went to Gloucester Road, and saw Mr [indecipherable name]. I asked him if he would act as a referee [deleted] in [/deleted] for me if war broke out and I joined. He said he would be only too pleased and said he always knew I was the right stuff. He also held the view that this continental pandering to the Dictator would lead to disastrous results a little later.
It was thoughtful of you not to have written about the leave before my exam. It is however, best that you do not approach them. Firstly you are only due leave every three years, secondly the firm might tell you to take permanent leave once you had landed here and then we would all be in a terrible mess. As it is the money may not last out for my articles.
As long as I get my LL.B it will be allright [sic] for I can then get a job, or join the short Service Commission or something like that. It would be a very good idea to get rid of the car, as it [deleted] costs [/deleted] [inserted] saves [/inserted] [indecipherable fragment] 50 a month apart from the price you would get for it. Well no more to-day. Love to Mrs Joseph. God bless & keep you & bring you back safely to us,
With lots of love & kisses

My own darling Daddy,
Thank you for your letter and all your news. Mrs Lawton does only a little of the ironing the [inserted] vast [/inserted] majority of it is done by Mum, who deserves a medal for all the hard work she does. It is really tough on her as the amount of washing ironing is colossal. Some of the fellows wear dirty shirts & socks for ages, & we are jolly lucky not to be in a similar position.
I am glad to hear you are feeling better. This evening I went to the flicks with Mummy to Tussaud’s Cinema, (within the custelage of Madame Tussauds, [deleted] my [/deleted] the legal side of my nature is bursting forth!).
I haven’t played any games lately, but have done a good deal of work. Yesterday I worked at King’s in the morning then went with another boy to the British Museum. When I got home I did some more work. We listened in [deleted] fragment of word [/deleted] [deleted] to [/deleted] to the commentary on the tennis at Wimbledon yesterday & as it was very exciting we thoroughly enjoyed it.
[page break]
I have not grown at all though Steve has and is [underlined] now [/underlined] only about an inch, if that much, shorter than I am.
Those coloured snaps I mentioned, have come out very well indeed. They are two snaps of Dave and I together in Queen Mary’s Gardens in Regents’ Park, the rest of the roll was taken at Kemsing when Mum went there for the week end a short time ago.
I heard from the hockey secretary that I shall probably be playing left [indecipherable] for the 1st this season. I shall probably play though I would rather play centre-half & left-back. Should I have any trouble & if I am just into the 2nd I won’t play for King’s but will for Faraday [indecipherable] 1st.
If you show eagerness at play, it does not seem to appreciated, but if you are indifferent, from what I have seen, apparently you are in great demand. No more to-day. Love to Mrs Joseph. God bless & keep you, & bring you back safely to us. With lots of love & kisses
from your loving son
