ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL,
JALAPAHAR,
DARJEELING,
9.7.33.
My darling Daddy,
Thanks for your letter. I did not do very well in Divinity I got 44, but in Chemistry I came 2nd with 70. the 1st Boy getting 75. We are playing St. Josephs on Wednesday 1st XI match and on Saterday [sic] 2nd XI match. I have torn up the notes of the speech I gave, but I remember what [deleted] to [/deleted] I said so at the end of the letter I will write out the notes. Four of my form boys spoke including me, and the Rector said that the four best speeches of the day was given by my form the fourth form. We did not see poor Mummy yesterday and today because she is not well and does not want us to catch a throat from her. She very kindly asked Mrs. Apcar to take us out instead. Many happy returns of the day Daddy, [deleted] [indecipherable] [/deleted] God bless and keep us all. So sorry for wishing
[page break]
you so late. On Wednessday [sic] we went to Jalapahar and saw a concert. It was very good indeed.
All the forms are giving a concert very shortly. My form is acting “Shivering Shocks”, but we are changing the name to the “Secret of the Formula” or the “Hughes Murder Case.” I am the murderer, and I have an awful lot to learn.
Notes on Debate.
Motion. That the Expedition to Mt. Everest is a waste of Money [sic], lives, and Time [sic].
I am against the motion.
[Underlined] My Notes. [/underlined]
[underlined] Brave Men, the good Conquering Spirit. Courage. [/underlined] People say they are mad, what about when the areoplane [sic] was thought of as mad. A Scientist while inventing something is killed. The Expidition [sic] failed people laugh at the brave men who went up but he who laughs last laughs longest.
I made enlargements on these notes.
With lots of love and kisses your loving son [underlined] David. [/underlined]

My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter, and the pamflits [sic], some of them were very good ones. The under 15 XI played St. Josephs and they beat us 4-1 duly to the falt [sic] of our goal keep. Stevie played centreforward [sic] and I played right back. Our forwards could not break through their backs so this wednessday [sic] I am going forwards. Lets [sic] hope we win this time. We should have easily won the game. The first 15 minutes of the game the ball only came on our half once. Last night we saw a piece call [sic] “Head Winds”, it was shown with the school machine, and we enjoyed it. We saw Mummy yesterday and today and had a good time. I have come 5th this month. I know my dorm masters report. It is Jo in charge of the Dorm, and maintains

good discipline. Jo a good lad in himself, and my conduct is very good quite good those two arent [sic] they? Have the trees grown much bigger? We went [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] riding today and enjoyed ourselves. [deleted] At [/deleted]
At present the points for the Rectors Cup between St. Josephs [sic] and us are St. Josephs [sic] 7. St. Pauls [sic] 3. The total number of points amounts to 20 points. 6 marks for each of the two 1st XI matches and 4 marks for each of the two 2nd XI matches.
I am ending now with lots of love and kisses from your loving son.

My darling Daddy.
Thanks for your letter.
The 2nd XI played St Josephs [sic] again and this time we beat them 2-1. That made the points 7-7. The [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] 2nd XI went to the pictures and we got a whole holiday. Stevie and I both played forwards this time. But yesterday our 1st XI lost against them 2-0 and they won the cup again. The rain spoilt the game for us. I go [sic] 78 in English and came 3rd.
We saw Mummy yesterday and today and had a good time. Yes we will take care of Mummy and not let her get ill again. We went for a ride today, and are getting nearly as good as jockeys now, I can control any horse in the stables

now. The weather is very bad at present and it does nothing but rain the whole day long. We are starting tomorrow, and the football houses matches will take place at the end of the year. I am glad to hear everything is alright at home. With lots of love and Kisses from your loving son [deleted] Da [/deleted]

My darling Daddy.
Thank you for your letter. I got 45 marks in Physics, [sic] and from 4th that put [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] me down to 6th. One boy beat me by 4, and another by 14. I came 2nd in Latin with 57. It is the first exam of a new month. I did not go out and see Mummy yesterday, because I had to have a rehearsal for out concert. I asked Mummy to come and see my form concert, last night, and she thouroghly [sic] enjoyed it. I was Head [sic] crook. We [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] went out to Mummy today and had a good time. We also went for a ride. We have got 100 pamphlits [sic] now. We have played three matches this week. We lost 5-1 against the police
[page break]
We won 10-0 against some people from Government house, 5 ladies played, so are [sic] boys took it easy and did not play their hardest. We also played against the Sporting Union and beat them 6-2.
We have saved up Rs10/4 and today my lock was broken and Rs8 stolen. I have reported the matter to Mrs. Cox. I think its [sic] disgraceful, whoever took it, must have no conscience. I am giving all our saved money to Mummy now. It will be safe with her.
There was a drawing exam yesterday and I was in Division 3. It is a London Exam. Haven’t I written a [deleted] n [/deleted] nice long letter? I am ending now with lots of love and Kisses from your loving son David.

DARJEELING.
15th October 1933
My darling Daddy,
Thanks for your letter.
I got a pair of spikes charged in the bill. I hope you don’t mind, there was no time to write to you so I asked Mummy. I payed [sic] Rs.11 for them. I got it for 1-8 less than the real price. It is a very good pair. Mummy saw them yesterday.
We had our fair yesterday it was a thourough [sic] sucess [sic]. We thouroughly [sic] enjoyed ourselves. I saw Sylvia and with our gang of friends took her round the place. I introduced her to Mummy. [deleted] We had a s [/deleted] Queenshill came, the [undecipherable] were not allowed. After the fair there was a show by a man & his daughters, the dancing was marvellous. Forbes & myself & Sylvia’s brother sat with her at the concert. We had a good time. I got 43 in Physics, I think I came 6th.
[page break]
There was a horse race in the fair yesterday. Really I was first but they said everyone cut [deleted] the [/deleted] [inserted] one of the [/inserted] corners except one boy but that was wrong, even Mummy thinks so. I rode like a jockey with short stirrups. Mummy & Forbes mother were very frightened because a dog came on the field and all the horses ran of [sic] the course. We got them on again though. It was a very exciting race. I did not go out today because my leave is stopped. I had a row with the gym instructor & he told the rector. After my leave was taken away I went to the instructors [sic] room and gave him something to think about. Cheer up Daddy only [deleted] [indecipherable] [/deleted] a few more days left, and you will have Mummy to entertain you. We went to Tiger Hill today and saw the sun rise & Mt Everest. The colouring & scenery was marvellous. No more news today with lots of love & kisses
from your loving son David.

My darling Daddy,
Thanks for your letter. Only a month left now. Mr Shelverton might give me one of his Gordon Setter pups. They are Rs. 250 each. He can’t sell any more so he said if it will get a good home he will see about giving me one. They are thouroughbred [sic]. The mother cost Rs. 1,000 to bring from Scotland and [deleted] his [/deleted] [inserted] the [/inserted] father is a champion. I got 50 marks in Divinity. My leave was stopped for talking in Prep. Mummy came and saw me today. I am getting on very well in tennis, (Singles & Doubles) [sic]. Mrs Pelly gave a party yesterday. Some of the Dio & Queenshill came. We drew for partners & by luck I drew Sylvia even if I hadn’t I would have changed for her. The evening was a thorough sucess [sic]. Mr. Bean ran the show & [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] had a

My darling Daddy.
Thanks for your letter. It is getting very cold now. We went out to Mummy yesterday and today. I got my leave back for speaking well in the debate. I had to make my speech up in two minutes. We went for a ride yesterday & today. I rode a racehorse today and controlled it well. Mummy saw me on it. The whole school is going to the pictures this Saturday to see “All quiet on the Western Front.” It is supposed to be very good. The new Rector Mr. Goddard

My darling Daddy.
Thanks for the letter & Rs 5. We bought Mummy’s present before the Rs 5 came, out of some Money we had saved. We bought a bottle of scent in a box shaped like a shoe. Mummy say the scent is good stuff. We saw Sylvia off on Thursday at Ghoom. We went riding there. We went in the Train up to Ghoom with our batch. We are having glorious days now. Mummy came to our prize giving on [deleted] thurs [/deleted] Wednesday. It was a poor show. Stevie got the class prize. We are sleeping up in the hospital, and have meals at the Rectory. We went out to Mummy Yesterday & the day before. Mummy gave us some money on her birthday. Riding leave is now completely stopped, because yesterday
[page break]
one of the boys was caught galloping and taken to the Thana. I have absolutely nothing to do now while the Cambridge boys are in class. If I had riding leave I could go riding with Ms Bean. Stevie fell off his horse yesterday but did not hurt himself. The horse tripped. Day before yesterday fifteen of us went riding. There were no horses left in the stable. I have taken three books from the Library and will pass my time reading. One is by Gunby Hadath, A school story, one is by Rafael Sabatini “Romances of the Sea and the other is Great Ghost Stories. No more news today.
With love from your loving son
[underlined] David. [/underlined]
[underlined] P.S. [/underlined] We play Bridge at night with the Rector. We went to the pictures with Mummy on Saturday

R.A.F.
7th June, 1941.
My darling Dad,
Thanks awfully for your letter which I received about two days before we sailed. It was sent on to Cape town from East London.
I hope you didn’t mind my cabling you to send Shirley Versfeld three pounds. We were all pretty short of cash as we had so many things to buy so I borrowed £3 from Shirley who was damn decent about it & wanted to let me have some more. If you remember she was the girl I was friendly with when I was in Cape Town for three weeks some time ago. I think I sent you a photograph of her.
It will be lovely seeing Mum & Steve again it’s a shame you won’t be with us. As you see I am homeward bound so I will not be able to cable you for your birthday. This letter may get you [sic] in time with luck. Many happy returns of the day Dad. God bless you. I shall send you a nice present as soon as we get home.
It is a nice feeling going home, but I must admit I was terribly sorry to leave S. Africa. The people were really good to us it is a damn fine country. I was very upset at having to leave Babe, she
[page break]
is the girl I am in love with. Any way we had a lovely time together but the parting was rotten. I bought her a little pair of gold R.A.F. wings. It was a beautifully finished job & she [deleted] was [/deleted] thought them terrific. We have a lot of nice things to remember. I shall definitely try & return to S. Africa after the war.
We had about ten days in [deleted] East London [/deleted] Cape Town after leaving East London. Ajan my pal, & I had an enjoyable but quiet time for a change. The last time we were there it was one long party. However it was different this time, I missed Babe a lot so didn’t go out much, accompanied that is. We usually went to a flick or had a few drinks. A girl I met in [indecipherable], a nurse was damn nice to us & we had her car every day, we were there. It was jolly good fun. I phoned Babe from Cape Town a couple of times. She was very pleased about it. She is a jolly sweet kid.
There isn’t a lot to do on board but we are quite comfortable & the food is reasonably good. The only work we do, if it can be called work is half an hours P.T. every morning. Two hours aircraft spotting a week & an occasional day of duty as orderly sergent [sic]. Not too bad on the whole. There are only R.A.F. on board & all in cabins so it isn’t too bad at all. This boat is not a patch on the Cape Town Castle, the ship we came out on.
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined]
our main problems here are the heat & no fresh water baths. The heat indoors is terrific & we all sweat like blazes most of the day. In conjunction with the lack of fresh water baths it makes things quite uncomfortable. Every body is getting acclimatised daily though, so everything is under control. We spend most of our time, writing letters, reading books, drinking beer & playing cards.
The friends we made in East London were really jolly decent to us. The fortnight which followed the end of the course was terrific. Tennis in the morning a couple of drinks in the afternoon & a party in the evening. Babe & I always went out together. I suppose all good things must come to an end sometime though we only knew each other for six weeks.
I shall probably be at home by the time you receive this letter. About four days before we sailed some English mail came in but as it hadn’t been assorted [sic] we missed it. We shall probably get the letters when we go home. Awful shame. Still it doesn’t matter actually & we should be home in a few weeks.
I shall write again as soon as possible Dad. I want to write several more letters & post them before we get to our [deleted] next [/deleted] first port of call.
No more to-day. God bless you. Lots of love from your ever loving [sic] son [underlined David. [/underlined]

7th July. [inserted] 1941 [/inserted]
My darling Dad,
We are very near the end of a long trip. By the time we get home it will have taken us just over six weeks, more than double the trip out.
The voyage at the beginning was very comfortable but later on we picked up a lot of evacuees, consequently we lost our cabins etc things became very crowded. Anyway we are nearly home now so it doesn’t matter.
Though it has been rather boring on the whole we have had a fairly amusing time. We called at Gibralter [sic], a most unusual direction from the normal route whatever that may be. Gib was very interesting I bought a few things there for Mum. I was able to cable for your birthday after all & drop the short air-mail letter also. Shall post this letter as soon as we get home. Will also send you a birthday present when we set foot on terra firma once again.
I shall miss my little girlfriend, Babe, but it can’t be helped.
The first part of the trip we spent in playing cards, reading & drinking, the second in reading
[page break]
and fixing my photograph album. It is nearly complete now and looks awfully nice. I have stuck the photos in, then drawn a white pattern round the snaps & have written appropriate explainations [sic] opposite the snaps. It looks jolly snappy too. I shall have finished it before I get home.
At Gibralter [sic] we hired a kind of [two indecipherable words] & went to the frontier. It was most interesting. Not knowing the place at all, at one stage of the journey we thought we had passed the frontier into Spain, did we panic. It was only imagination on our part. We were allowed ashore every other day & after going ashore a few times, & buying all the necessaries I did not go ashore any more. A couple of us went swimming in the sea near the ship ever day. It was grand fun & we are as brown as berries now. – Sorry my ink has run out.
We had a spot of bother a couple of days ago. A couple of enemy aircraft dropped a couple of bombs which missed by a fair margin then dashed off. We still have spotting duties every day now instead of once a week as formerly.
To-day for the first time it has not been calm. There is a biggish swell though I am not feeling sea-sick, I am certainly not feeling terrific.
Mum will be awfully pleased with the stuff I am taking home. Have bought some
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined]
good cigarettes for Steve & will get him a 21st birthday present as soon as I get my back pay as a Sergeant. That well be within a short time of getting home.
When I have time to get organised at home, shall send you a lot of the snaps I took in East London. A couple of Babe also, taken at night. They are very nice.
Every evening in the lounge there is a sing-song & amusing stories are told. One fellow who is returning home for leave after over-sea’s service is terrific. He is very versatile & keep [sic] us all in fits of laughter. He taught us all a native song called Bongo-Bongo. It is really good & quite the hit of the moment on this ship.
Some R.A.F. Aircrews on board who have been in action have told us what to expect etc. What further training we shall have [one deleted indecipherable word] & other useful information. They are jolly interesting.
May add a line before we get home. Will write more from home. No more to-day. God bless you Dad.
Lots of love from
Your ever-loving son
[underlined] David. [/underlined]
Just arrived home have cabled you. With Mum & Steve at the moment. Writing again soon.
Love David

31st July 1941.
My darling Dad,
Just a line to let you know how I am getting on. Came back to the camp after our leave & got cracking on work right away. We are doing further training for a couple of months – It is called operational training. – It is really most interesting. I am enjoying it thoroughly. We got lots of shooting practice & playing around in turrets. Great fun. We start flying in a couple of days. The planes we are on are bombers. Beautiful planes. Gave me quite a thrill looking over it. They are colossal things. Our work so far has been on the ground. Firing practice, & lectures on various subjects all most interesting.
The town near this place isn’t up to much. Especially after S. Africa it is awfully boring. Still I feel like doing a spot of work. When we got back from leave we went out the next day to a flick it was lousy. After the show it rained like fury. It took us three hours to get back to our billet. After two & a half hours searching & standing around we managed to locate a taxi. That was quite enough for us. Tonight is the third night in succession that we have stayed in Quite enjoyed it in fact. Alongside our billet we have a canteen where we can get tea, rolls & beer. So we are quite well off. We miss the hectic life
[page break]
we had in S.Africa. Sorry I spent all that money Dad, but going back to 2/6 a day was pretty awful Also one is only young once & in these days that applies more so than ever.
I hope to manage a week-end up to London sometime if we are not flying. Our flying clothing is absolutely terrific. Will try & send you some snap [sic] soon. Also some of the latest ones I took in S.Africa. Photography was the chief cause of my extravagance. Everybody is very impressed with my photograph album. It certainly looks damn good.
No more to-day Dad will write again soon.
God bless you. Lots of love
Your loving son
Dave.

10th Dec. 1941
My darling Dad,
Thanks awfully for your letter. Sorry to hear about Dan Joseph. Hope he recovers soon.
Have had a fairly hectic time here for the first time since we have returned from S.Africa. Though it is difficult to get out of this camp we do manage to somehow. Nottingham about 16 miles from the camp is a jolly fine place & full of fun. Ajan & I are friendly with two young married girls who we go dancing with. The mother in law of one of them usually puts us up for the night. She is very nice. My partner is a rather neat little blonde, though a bit spoilt & rather shallow. Quite good fun to go dancing with.
[page break]
I am going up to London in a couple of days for 48hrs. It is better than nothing. I am due some leave in a month.
We had rather a hectic trip a couple of nights ago. A fighter intercepted us & at that moment my turret – [sic] stopped functioning but we came home safely. Haven’t operated much lately. Still the hours are piling up slowly.
No more to-day Dad.
God bless you.
Lots of love
Dave.

My darling Dad,
Thanks awfully for your letters & all the news. Very pleased to hear you got in some good tennis at the club. Glad to hear all about the business too.
Yes those damn [deleted] Japs are coming closer. Anyway Dad you’ve got the right spirit, give them a really warm reception if they suceed [sic] in getting through. We did a lot of raids last month but have been slack this month. Just one night raid on Brest & a daylight on the Scharnhorst & the Gneisenau.
A daylight is much more thrilling & yet in some ways a less strain than night bombing.
My crew had 48hrs leave over
[page break]
the week-end. As I had a very bad throat & was grounded for a couple of days I managed to get away earlier. Returned to camp this morning almost quite fit & refreshed. Had a marvellous time. Last night Steve, Ajan & I & three girls one of them Ajan’s sister went to the Trocadero where we danced & had dinner. It was a really grand party. Only cost 7/- a head including drinks. It was a jolly good week-end all together. We get our crew leave in a fortnight’s time. We get a week for crew leave. Looking forward to it.
Ajan (my gunner pal) & I are staying in this evening recuperating from the hectic week-end. We have a lovely fire on in the room & the radio on. Getting off quite a bit of my outstanding mail. Will write again soon.
God bless you Dad. Look after yourself.
Lots of love
Dave.

My darling Dad,
Just a line to say hullo[sic]. Had a short leave in London, since I last wrote. Just 48 hours but it’s better than nothing. Spent it fairly quietly. Had a quick drink with someone one evening & went to a flick the other.
Haven’t done much operating lately. The other night we went on a raid for the first time after over three weeks. Had to turn back as one of engines gave trouble & looked like catching fire. Have been on 16 raids so far.
Have been out with boys a couple of times recently. We just went out to a flick & then came back to camp after a meal. Used to live at quite a speed six months ago but have toned down
[page break]
temporarily.
Yesterday we had a stand down. That means no flying at all & we are free after lunch. So Ajan, my second pilot & I went to Leicester in Ken’s car (Ken is the second pilot on our crew). Saw a flick “The Chocolate Soldier” it was rather disappointing. After that we went to a dance hall but only had one dance as the crowd was very dull.
Hope to get some leave soon & go home. Don’t let the Japs get you down Dad. The filthy swine should be exterminated.
Am getting on very well. Have applied to change over to a pilot. Hope it comes through. If it does, even so the changeover won’t occur for at least six months to nine.
More later. God bless you Dad.
Lots of love

20th December.
My own darling Mum, Dad & Steve.
Thanks ever so much for your letters. I am so sorry to have missed the phone call, but I was having a hair cut [sic]. I hope you got my wire. We came into Howrah at 9.30 because we were put on to another train due to the Viceroy. Then we had to wait an hour and a half at Howrah because the gates were shut. Marcus went to Assansole [?] on work and has not yet been home. I have aranged [sic] to see Anderson at 3 o’clock monday [sic], and will try and leave the same night. I will have to have my teeth seen to when I am coming back with Steve. I bought a racket for Rs 15, he gave it to me at half price. I hope you dont [sic] mind. It is a terrible nuisance having to do everything yourself, it is plain sailing when someone else does it. I think I have got through, as a matter of fact I am almost sure I have. I dont [sic] think I have got an “A” cert. I will do all the things you said , [deleted] so [/deleted] but I dont [sic] think much money will be left for our travelling fares. We had
[page break]
a lovely time on the way down. We saw two pictures at Bavell. The Wellesely girls were near us and I knew one who was Evelyn’s friend. I went and looked in for a lark and the teacher in charge invited me in. In next to no time we were as thick as thieves, the other boys joined in and we had a really fine time.
I saw Romeo and Juliet yesterday, the end was terrible. Well all of you, no more to-day as I have much to do. God bless & keep you, with lots of love & kisses from the “He” man of the family
[underlined] Dave [/underlined]
[underlined] Steve. [/underlined] Thanks for your letters during Camb week, they were very wellcome, [sic]

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks awfully for your letters. We went for our Cambridge picnic today and had a jolly good time. There was only one bad thing and that was going in the bus, I got terribly sick; that’s very funny as I do not usually get sick. We had the prize distribution today, and Steve got a nice cup for the [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] cricket. We will not write to Calcutta as Daddy may have gone back when the letter reaches. I am glad to hear that you [deleted] can [/deleted] are staying with Aunty [deleted] indecipherable letter [/deleted] Phyl. It will be so much better than being alone. [deleted] Their [/deleted] There is no time to finish the tennis tournaments so I don’t know what will happen. We are taking the Billi [?] vaccine and tomorrow will be our last day. We will send you that list at Cambridge week time as Steve can look up what we need. We will buy all our clothes and rackets by ourselves our matron will get us all sorts of siezes [sic]. I will
[page break]
write to Daddy as you say he does not know when he will return. I think P.D.C is higher than St. Pauls, isn’t it? No Mum I won’t be a bit cocksure. Fancy finding an egg like that. How foolish of the bird not to lay it in a more convenient place. I am glad to hear the dogs are getting on nicely. I am sorry to hear that those wretched dogs won’t make up. We are dying to come home and see the dogs and cinders as she is a new addition to the family, and everybody else. How the days have flown only a fortnight and we go home. Shall we travel under age from Calcutta? I think we might. I got a pair of boots made by the College Moche [?] as I needed a pair. No more news today with lots of love and kisses, God bless and keep you both for us your loving son

Thanks awfully for your letter. I made a mistake about the football. My class lost against the XB 3-1, and the XB beat Steve’s class 1-0. Please let us know wether [sic] to send you a list or not. We have been having Mechanics papers the last two days and tonight we will do the July paper. I will let you [deleted] indecipherable word [/deleted] know what I get. I am getting on well in music now. I have learnt four pieces and am on my fifth and I have learnt four duets. I am revising everything now so you need not worry about my working. There are only ten days left for the exam. The cambridge picnic is on the 31st of [deleted] this [/deleted] [inserted] next [/inserted] month. It is not very cold now. Certainly nothing like Darjeeling. The winter line is beautifully clear now a days [sic]. Do you remember seeing it when you were here? It is a big circular horizon [deleted] [undecipherable] [/deleted] below which [deleted] in [/deleted] everything is a dark blue hue.

Is there still water on the tennis court? I hope not as it will need some time to get into shape. I am playing for my class in the Individual championship. Two boys from each class enter for singles and two pairs of doubles. I am playing in both. I play one of Steve’s chums. He is very good indeed. But I will play my hardest against him. There are cups for the winners. What a shame that creeper was spoilt. I hope the Garden turns out as good as usual. Especially the sweet peas, [underlined] and ordinary peas [/underlined]. No more news today, with lots of love and kisses God bless and keep you both for us
your loving son [underlined] David [/underlined].

My darling Mummy and Daddy.
Thanks ever so much for your letter. Now that we know we are staying at Calcutta for two days and buy the things we need it makes us feel much happier. The only disapointing [sic] thing is that you won’t be there. It will teach us to fend for ourselves and it is time we learnt to. Yes there are other boys coming down with us. Some are big, the S.C boys. There is no need to worry as it is the same every here, and the boys are quite allright [sic] alone. Do we travell [sic] 2.nd class by train and 1.st class by steamer, from Calcutta? I think you will need a small trunk as we will not be able to fit the things we buy as well as our own kit. We won’t by [sic] suits going down but coming up, as I think our suits will do for the holidays. How many [deleted] hanckerch [/deleted] hankerchiefs [sic] shall we buy? Please thank Ally for her wishes and send our love to her. We had an Arithmetic [sic] test today, this years [sic] July paper. It was easy as nuts, I have not got my marks yet. I don’t think I got under 60, by comparing answers. Lall wrote again he is going to Calcutta for a time this year, so if we have any spare time we will look him up. Cox wrote

a nice long letter today. He is in school [deleted] there [/deleted] in England, and won the Tennis Championship in the school. He is in the B for cricket. He says [deleted] he [/deleted] they had a pleasant voyage and thouroghly [sic] enjoyed themselves. One of the S.C. boys go [sic] pneumonia very badly and then suddenly after two days became normal and is getting much better. I think he will be able to sit for the exam. The lantern lecture that Brother Allen gave us was very fine indeed. The colouring in some of the slides was gorgeous, and it was most interesting too. The Cambridge boys get extra [inserted] food [/inserted] in a few days. I hope you got the letter wishing you for your birthday. This is my fourth letter to you this week, that is Sunday to Sunday, so no more news today, with lots of love and kisses from your loving son
