work from Eashing to Francombe. The training has taken up all week-ends so that the time left for work etc. has been remarkably little. Today (Monday) is what is generally known as the”pseudo-exeat” - to wit, a whole holiday in which one can do practically anything except go in a bus or train. They reckon are[sic] journeys would not be really necessary. We disagree.
Any chance of seeing you [character deleted] next holidays?

Dearest David
I had a letter from Elizabeth this morning which I was overjoyed to get as it was the first news we had has of anyone for a fortnight, we don't lead exactly what you would call a very exciting life here - but I was very sorry to hear that you had got the measles, also that Alastair-Pharoah was no more having been run over by a motor, I was very sorry to hear both these sad items of news being very attached to A.P & dreadfully sorry to hear that he had come to such a sad end.
Elizabeth says you have got the measles in a mild form & that Eric has been in communication with your doctor, and that she had had a note from Thrmo [?] to say that you had felt rather wretched on Tuesday as the rash was out, I hope by the time you get this you will will [sic] be feeling much better, & that I shall not come home & find you a nervous wreck, I cannot bear to think that the only one of my .children who so far has had the measles should have it whilst I am in foreign lands, so go on having it slightly – once its over it will be a very good thing to have had it, & a very good time to have had it, being summer time & very tactful of you to have got it over before the holidays -
JOHN I. THORNYCROFT & CO., LIMITED, SOUTHAMPTON. [see comments]

but I do wish I could come over and see you – Daddy and I are leading a very monotonous and absolutely clockwork life, nobody seems very anxious to have much to say to us, so we amuse ourselves the best we can, Bathe in the morning – sleep in the afternoon, wander round the golfcourse in the [deleted] afternoon [/deleted] [inserted] evening [/inserted] , [inserted] me [/inserted] following Daddy who hits golf balls in every direction, curses and swears because they are not perfect, & a small Poruguese[sic] caddie about the size of Norman (& looking rather like Norman as to size and figure, especially as his clothes are much the same colour & style as Ns old grey pyjamas) manages to find all the balls in the most amazing way – then we come home eat our dinner and go to bed & so we go on day after day, Daddy goes in to Lisbon every morning to see if there is anything doing, we are out here trying to get an order for two sloops & I gather Daddy will be terribly surprised if he gets it, but he dare not go as there is just a chance that he might, a very very remote one, so here we sit & as I said before nobody wants us – there is one other English couple in the Hotel, a baronet and his wife, very affectionate and rather haughty, she wears an eyeglass & smokes cigars, they represent he aristocracy, we are in the middle class, & the next middle class down is represented by a Scotch couple from Glasgow, who are very Scotch and very talkative, he is [sic] great ideas as to how wives should behave to their husbands they do not coincide with mine at all; we see almost too

much of them, then there's an Austrian, 2 Danes, 6 Portuguese & one or two other oddments I don't quite know what they are, but as you can see conversation is rather restricted, unfortunately I made friends with the Portuguese last night, & I dare not go out & sit on the Terrace today because I shall have to go on trying to make conversation with them, & its a terrible effort.
The sea is lovely here I generally have a sun bath before & after my bathe, but my skin has got so tickly in spite of masses of olive oil rubbed in until I feel like a sardine, that I contented myself with only bathing this morning, you can spend as much of the day as you like in a bathing dress of the briefest description, the Scotchman here was telling me that you can never be quite sure [inserted] in foreign parts [/inserted] what does constitute indecent behaviour, that a friend of his somewhere in Italy went down to the beach in shorts and he was had up by a policeman for not being properly dressed & he had to stand under the eye of the policeman whilst his friend went up to his hotel & fetched his trousers & then he had to change then and there under the eye of the policeman, the Scotchman swears that here were people sunbathing [inserted] in scanty bathing dress [/inserted] all round him which I find hard to believe – but its a pity you can't come here & sun bathe, you'd be a lovely colour.
I gather from Elizabeth that Sol is doing his best to get on with Julian, so far neither has eaten the other & so I hope all is well – is there any chance of your being sent home when you are out of quarantine for measles? We don't know when we shall be home, at present Daddy seems to think we might get away about July 18th which would get us home about July 22, but

1. I intend drawing up some sort of programme for armistice celebrations on the camp and I would like your views on the subject and any suggestions you have to offer. Although a few people may celebrate the armistice away from the camp the great majority of personnel will still be here so that all our arrangements should cater for the full complement of personnel, which is in the neighbourhood of 253 officers, 500 N.C.O.s and 1,382 other ranks.
2. As you can see from these numbers, any organised festivities are going to be difficult to arrange and will probably mean that two or three items will have to take place at the same time.
3. I have in mind the following proposals :-
(i) 100% church thanksgiving service, either open air or in the hangars
(ii) two all ranks dances at the same time
(iii) programme of sport
(iv) some sort of open air festival – outdoor dancing, if weather permits
(v) community singing
(vi) interchange of visits between the sergeants' and officers' in their respective messes
(vii) as many liberty coaches to Norwich as possible.

WORCS. 6/6/44.
Wg./Cdr C.DV. Willis, DSO, DFC,
RAF Foulsham, Norfolk.
Sir:
I am taking the liberty of writing you this letter to express the appreciation of myself and crew of having had the privilege to complete the largest part of a tour of operations under your command, our only regret is not to have been able to finish the tour with you.
Instruction is very monotonous and tiring, even more so than expected, coupled with long hours and a rather starched atmosphere it makes one wish to be back with the Squadron, in fact ['s' deleted] ops would no doubt prove to be a rest.
Miller is now a F/O and well established as I/C his favorite [sic] navigational aids in Elgin and justly proud of himself.
Miller and myself were first posted to Lossiemouth where we were recognised by the Group Captain
[page break]

who enquired after your health. [inserted] 2 [/inserted] He had heard you had gone missing in a Beaufighter. He still takes kindly toward 192 personnel.
I hope I am right in assuming you [underlined] will [/underlined] be coming back to Foulsham as Station Commander or perhaps to some position in the old group. If this is the case, both Miller and myself still wish a tour in Mosquitoes and should you ever require the services of either one of us we will welcome the chance to get back. The outlook of fifteen months of this doesn't appeal to me and perhaps a request for an experienced? pilot in your work would be well received by this group, number 91.
I close now wishing yourself, Mrs Willis and family the best of health.
Yours faithfully,
IMR Leask F/O

Dear Mr. Donaldson,
My name is Douglas Worrad and in the first place I wish to offer you and your family my deepest sympathy on the loss of your father, a truly great and admirable gentleman.
During the war I served as a pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force and after some additional training in England, with my crew of five English chaps and one other Australian, I was extremely fortunate to be posted to the RAF Squadron 192 in Foulsham, in Norfolk, and of which your father was the Commanding Officer. I was twenty one at that time and I thought your father was much older. Now I realise he was only twenty nine! One evening in the mess, it was about seven o'clock, and I had just taken a sip from a glass of beer, and he came up to me and said, “Are you flying tomorrow, Worrad?”. I said “Yes, Sir.” and he left me to it. I put the nearly full glass back on the bar and went straight to my room and bed. That was part of his style. He made his point, firmly, but without any embarrassment. An outstanding officer and very fine gentleman. I am very proud to have known him.
Shortly after completing a “tour of operations” with 192 Squadron and some leave in the U.K., I was posted back to Australia and the Pacific where the Japanese were still active. Shortly before I left England I married an English Wren. She is still putting up with me.
I have only hard some snippets of your father's career after the war, not necessarily accurate, and I would greatly appreciate it if you could find the time to fill me in. Did he stay on in the RAF for some time after the war, reaching the rank of Air Commodore? Was he elevated to a peerage? Was he widowed a long time? I am not going to write a book about him but I would like to know what happened to him “afterwards”.
Kindest regards,
Doug Worrad.
PS It was one of my old crew, the “bomb aimer”, who sent me a copy of the notice of your father's passing.

Golbey, 19th Sept. 1945
My dear Madame,
I am writing this letter to let you know that I duly received your letter in which you thank me for the details I have been able to give you on the subject of the passing of your dear son.
Believe me dear madame that I have done my utmost to give you satisfaction and permit a mother’s heart to be assured of the fate of a Being doubly dear.
I ask you to excuse me for addressing you in French, but I have lost the services of a kind interpreter He has left this vicinity, and I am now obliged to write you in my mother tongue.
Believe me however that my words are no less sincere. In the course of the War 1939 – 40 I lived in a sector with British soldiers, and learned to appreciate their true value, and I express to them my personal satisfaction with their attitude and conduct which was always correct in my poor country of France.
It is one of the things in my existence which I shall never forget. It is graven in my memory, and be persuaded that I shall [word deleted] look to the entire British nation with the most profound gratitude.
You ask me in your letter how you can thank me. May I be so bold as to make a suggestion? During my stay with your soldiers I appreciated many, many times the aroma and delicacy of your light tobacco. Will it be too much to ask you to send me a small parcel of that cherished tobacco. You will certainly think it is very bold of me, and the only excuse I can offer is that I am a desperate smoker and tobacco in France is rare. I shall be very grateful to you.
From my side, it will be a great pleasure to [deleted] meet [/deleted] [inserted] receive [/inserted] you at my house, if one day in the course of a journey to France to see the tomb of your dear son you will do me the honour to visit me.
As requested, I am sending you the negatives of the photos taken at Aiglemont. The negative marked with a cross indicates the tomb where reposes your son in his eternal sleep.
My best wishes, etc etc.

FROM
THE BISHOP OF DOVER
ST MARTINS PRIORY,
CANTERBURY.
3rd April, 1941.
Dear Edwards,
Of course I would be delighted to take the wedding. Tell your daughter so with my love. I know you will give me what notice you can, and I shall look forward to coming.
I have for years made a rule, whenever I marry a couple, that I see them beforehand, take them through the marriage service, and rub in the implications of Christian marriage and the solemnity of the promises. I find it well worth doing because, quite apart from satisfying one's own conscience [inserted] that [/inserted] one is not allowing them to marry with their eyes shut, it also means that they understand the service when they get to it. But in this case I am sure I can leave all that to you. You can probably do it better than I can.
Yours sincerely,
[underlined] Alfred Dover [/underlined]

Royal Air Force,
Bicester,
Oxon.
6th June, 1944.
Dear W/C. Cheshire,
Herewith the lecture of which I spoke.
If you have any comments I should be grateful for them. As you will see we have what amounts to three models which viewed from 6 yards standing up represents 1200ft at 1200 yards, 450 ft and 450 yards and 150 ft and 150 yards, the last being a bit optimistic, but when we asked for the model at the beginning we didn't know much about the very low point. However, fortuitously it has turned out the right size since it covers really both flares and very low work without an extra model. These distances are judged on the worst viewing angle from the Mosquito, since we like to teach in such a way that the synthetic is worse than the real.
A point which still worries me, from the instruction point of view, is how to know you are at 300ft or so. I'm never happy about altimeters when they get over 50 miles away from base, and the Radar type would be impossible to get for our quantity even if they had no limitations. Is here any crew work that one could standardise from the teaching standpoint? I have been unavoidably vague in the script – one watch the horizon and one the ground etc. (“if you can, this kind of thing”).
A scheme which might interest you has been tried lately by Mr Thomas of Leamington Spa (made the models Bomber Command use. He makes rapid artist scetches[sic] of any target as seen from any height, time (night or day), bearing, from a vertical photograph. I introduced him to 2 Group but don't know how far they have got. He may be of some help to you. I have not mentioned you to him. You may, of course, know him. Leamington Spa 2190, Ministry of Home Security – Camouflage.
Thanking you for your help.

Dear Mr. Cheshire,
I am writing you again, hoping you may be able to tell me a little something more concerning my son Sgt. Harold Barbour Moore who lost his life on March 2nd 1943.
I have learned that F/O Sauter[?]-Smith is safe as well as Sgt. [name indecipherable] and P/O Blackmore. I still can't feel that Harold wont come back yet I know I have so little to base my hope on. Those connected with the crew have been so wonderful to write to me and I do appreciate their kindness. I have been advised to enquire about Harolds insurance. I know so little of the ways in which the R.A.F. And R.C.A.F. Work I shall appreciate any information in any way you may give me.
A friend of Harold's with whom he spent leaves has been so nice
(over)
[page break]
to write to me and she sent me “Tail Gunner” also wrote me about “Bomber Pilot” and it may interest you to know I am trying now to get it.
I liked the book “Tail Gunner”. I felt a little closer to Harold after I read it.
I again wish you to know that I appreciate the way you spoke of my son and shall appreciate any information you may be able to give me.
With kindest wishes to you and those with you.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Lillie B. Moore

Dear Wing Commander Cheshire
I would so much like to try and tell you how your letter has helped me, it was so very kind of you to write when I know how busy you are – I know the expression perfect husband has often been used, but Tommie was perfect – It comforts me to know he died with his boys, he thought the world of them, and only in his last letter he told me how happy he was – Will you please

29th December, 1943.
Group Captain L. Cheshire,
R.A.A.F. Base Station,
[underlined] MARTON MOOR. YORK. ENGLAND. [/underlined]
Dear G/C.,
Your letter of the 10th October arrived just on Christmas Eve, and it was to us a happy omen that you could find time to write to us.
I was glad to hear that you had been able to find a suitable Pewter Mug in memory of “son” and actually the idea came from two very great friends of mine in the Air Force, G/C Brown and Wing Commander Broadbent.
They are two chaps that a fellow who writes the letters that you do should some day meet and know.
Since last writing you we have has another kick in the pants in that my daughter's Fiance [sic], a lad named Bruce Davies who was an air gunner on a Lancaster in England has lost his life.
We received the cable informing us of this on the day that my daughter was called up in the Air Force in what we call here the Waafs.
At the tender age of eighteen she

decided to fill son's uniform although at that time she was a Journalist on the afternoon paper here which is a protected industry (God knows why). The C.O. of her station graciously offered her a week's leave to recover from the shock, but being a Campbell, who already stabbed the MacDonalds in the back at Glencoe, she said ”No thank you, Sir” and carried on as if nothing had happened.
This letter will probably take some months to get to you, but, even if it is late, we wish you and yours all the best for 1944 and the hope that we might even meet you in that year.
With all the best wishes from the Campbell Family,
Yours very sincerely,

Dear Wing Commander Cheshire,
It was most kind of you to write when my brother W.O.2 Brian de Courcy O'Grady was reported missing. I apologise for not thanking you before this, but the thought that I might hear good news at any time, if I were just to ignore the first report, has kept me from writing.
I have not by any means

given up hope that he is safe somewhere, and shall continue to look forward to hearing further news from you.
In the meantime, thank you again for your very kind note.
Sincerely.

My Dear Leonard,
Just a line to congratulate you most heartily on your very well earned V.C. It was a mighty fine effort and has received universal praise, more it is a great Show for 617.
I didn’t know whether this will ever get you but don’t reply anyway as you will get a lot of these.
See you out there.
Yours Ever.

FARNBOROUGH, HANTS.
5th June, 1944
Wing Commander Cheshire, D.S.O., D.F.C,
617 Squadron,
Royal Air Force,
Woodhall Spa,
Lincolnshire.
Dear Cheshire,
I am writing to confirm that Thursday morning this morning of this week will be convenient for Mr. Perring to meet you. I understand that you will ring me up that morning to let me know whether you can come or not. If you are unable to come Mr Perring will probably be able to see you on Friday afternoon if that is convenient to you.
In discussing instrument troubles with F/L Scarrett and others at your Squadron at Coningsby, I found that there were quite a number of detailed points, particularly in connection with navigation equipment, for
[crest National Scheme for Disabled Men]

example, D.R. Compass, A.P.I., etc. on which I think we could help you. I am therefore arranging for my navigation people to get into touch with Scarrett with a view to sending up Sergeant Jones who has been attached to us for a long time and who can effectively deal with all the points in question.
I have got someone looking up exhibition copies of some of he photographs which you said you would particularly like to have. I will send these to you as soon as they are available.
I must thank you for treating me so well during my recent visit when I was particularly interested to meet you and your people and to discuss so much of interest to us both.
Yours sincerely,
