Junkers JU 52/3.
The original JU 52 was a single engined civil transport, the later three engined version being designated the JU 52/3m. Both these versions appeared as 15-17 passenger transports in 1930-1932, but from 1934-1935 the aircraft was produced as a bomber for the Luftwaffe. Later it was put into production as a military transport, in which category it served throughout the European War. It first saw action in the Spanish Civil War & was known as ‘Iron Annie’ due to its corrugated fuselage. Altogether about 3500 were built powered by three BMW radial engines with a top speed of 180 mph.

Junkers JU 86.
This aircraft first saw service as a passenger plane with South West Africa Airways. Brought into use as a medium bomber during the Spanish Civil War, it was found to be inadequately armed when faced with modern fighters. In 1939 the Ju 86 was produced as a photo-reconnaisance [sic] machine operating at a maximum height of 41,000 feet, 9000 feet better than a Spitfire could reach.

Junkers JU 87.
A two-seat dive bomber. Known as the Stuka, the JU 87 first saw action in the Spanish Civil War. Later it took a prominent part in the invasion of Poland, the French Campaign, the Battle of Britain & the invasion of Russia. The Stuka fared very badly in the Battle of Britain, the R.A.F. shooting them down with ease, & as a result their activities in Western Europe almost ceased. The Stuka, with its distinctive ‘Gull’ wings had sirens attached to the undercarriage legs which created a demoralising scream when in a dive. As a dive bomber the Stuka carried 4000lb of bombs & was armed with four machine guns. Later developments included the heavily armoured JU 87D3 & 87D4 with underwing gun packs for ground attack, & the JU 87G a specialist tank buster.

[Letterhead]
7 BELGRAVE SQUARE,
LONDON, S.W.1
S/LR. RAF/C.7289
22nd.July.1943.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
We very much regret to have to tell you that no information has come through regarding your husband Sergeant I.A. Wynn. No.1024298, although full enquiries are being made on your behalf.
We feel it is only right, however, that you should be informed of the grievous report which has reached us through the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva, concerning the crew of which your husband was a member, for although the information which this contains can but add most deeply to your already great anxiety, we believe that you would not wish it to be withheld.
A telegram from the organisation at Geneva reports that according to the official German Authorities, Pilot Officer G. Russell and Pilot Officer H.N. Petts lost their lives on May 26th. 1943, and also one member of the crew whose identity it had not yet been possible to establish. On receipt of this tragic news the Air Ministry has posted the two airmen whose names are given as "Missing, believed Killed in Action" but since the crew consisted of seven men you will understand that until further information is forthcoming the remaining five members must still be classified as 'missing'.
We realise what this report will mean to you, and we wish you to know that every effort is being made in order to
cont'd...............

clarify this distressing situation. Please understand that whenever further information comes to light you will be notified immediately, and we ask you to accept meanwhile our sympathy in your suspense.

Governor’s camp,
Bihar.
Men and Women of Bihar,
This is a day of rejoicing and of hope: of rejoicing because victory is at last accomplished over the evil power of Nazi Germany: of hope because great Allied forces from the West can now be sent against the Japanese who attacked this country from the East, and an early end to the troubles caused to you by the war is in sight.
In Africa, Europe and in Asia, the men of the Indian Forces have fought gallantly and many have paid the supreme sacrifice to save India from the terrors and cruelties of war.
In the difficult days to come let us all try to be worthy of that sacrifice.
T.G. Rutherford
Governor of Bihar.

Dearest,
Just a line or two while I am waiting for a line from you. I have not heard since Friday. I was hoping for one today.
Well what do you think of his news now. I bet Pop is pleased. I hope we can keep it up now. Although if we get them out of Africa without opening up a second front It will release a lot of his Airforce to Bomb us, but that will be after they have recuperated their losses in Egypt which have been tremendous. Of course their powers of recuperation will be getting less & less now.
I am still as busy as hell now still I am enjoying the Course. It is the barrack life that is so upsetting I get awfully depressed if I stick around too much. I can understand Chaps continually going on the beer & getting hectic when They get away from their Camp, and those chaps going mad when they come off the Submarines.
By the way have you heard anything from Grandad? Did you write him about those coupons. Oh. would you send to Ipswich? or oblige me if you
[page break]
dont want to send from there as I have had a letter Again & I cant do anything myself for a fortnight anyway. Well I must close now & turn into my little narrow bed. so Good night darling. I wish I were actually saying that dont you?.

D[missing letters]r Auntie Amy & Uncle Bob,
Under the circumstances there is really very little I can say, but believe me, you both have my deepest sympathy. Waiting for news – both good or bad – is awful, but I do hope & pray that when that news comes, it will be good news for you.
Don't give up hope, Hedley may be safe somewhere. There's still a

chance.
May you all get good news about Hedley very soon.

Dear Willy
As you have probably heard I am still sitting on my bottom [deleted] he [/deleted] at home, a state of affairs which I hope will continue for a long time. I went over and saw your wife & daughter on Thursday. They both entertained me very industriously & I enjoyed myself, though I failed to count to more than six teeth & I can claim to be very practical in tooth hunting these days as Pa did his usual trick of depositing his on the towing path just before August Bank holiday & we have been searching spasmodically since. [deleted word]
Norman & Elizabeth have both been over, the latter seeming very well & busy house hunting like you without any real success as yet. I gather Brian isn’t definitely posted to Farnborough as yet, only attached, but I suppose he will be shortly. Norman was very full of the joys of being an officer & a gentleman, the newness of the contrast not having yet worn off. He hadn’t got his uniform when he came over. He said when he left Medmenham [deleted word] all the S.P at the gate laughed at him, but promised they would
[page break]
be good & salute him when he returned.
Apparently he very shortly has to learn to ride a motor bike, there doesn’t seem to be much instruction given so I only hope there won’t be another casualty in the Intelligence Corps
Ma & Pa are both pretty well having had a weeks holiday here. Emma unfortunately went on Thursday & now Mrs Fudge is back very eager to find any fault she can with what Emma did there seeming to be a certain rivalry between the two. Ma with my assistance & criticisms has just produced a fine mixed grill.
I have been trying to make a will so you will have to be an executor I hope you don’t mind.
I hope you are well & your house hunting has been successful; [deleted] you [/deleted] I couldn’t quite gather what the position is at the moment.
Love from Ma Pa & Self
Ian.

(Casualty Branch)
73-77, OXFORD STREET,
W.1.
Your Ref. P. 418816/1/P.4./P.W./B.5.
23 September, 1944.
Sir,
I am directed to refer to the telegram sent from this Department on 21st September, 1944, and to inform you that the following letter written by your son, Flying Officer Geoffrey Howard Packham, was read over the German wireless on 20th September, 1944:- [inserted] (LORD HAW HAW!) [/inserted]
"Dear Mum, Dad and Pete,
I have now arrived in a permanent camp, and you can write to me here. You can write as often as you wish and, believe me, those letters will be welcome. You must consult the local Red Cross branch for all details. I can write letters - three letters - and four postcards each month to you, so would you spread the gen when they do arrive, and I can send them all to you. I am not wounded at all, and due to the magnificent Red Cross our stay here will not be so bad. There are just two things I should like to say: first, has my kit arrived at home ? You can use any of it that you wish, Pete. [inserted] TRIUMPH MOTOR BIKE [/inserted]
Was (? "The Times") sent along too? I'll be needing that soon - I hope. Anyway, that is all for now. Space is short, so will you give my regards and west [sic] wishes to all my friends for me? One thing more - please do not send any parcels, but letters in their millions are the staff of life to me for the present. So cheerio, and bags of love.
Ever yours, GEOFF "
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,

Dear Sir & Madam
In accordance with Air Ministry instructions, the personal effects of the above named as enumerated on the enclosed inventory, have been despatched to you by passenger train.
When the effects reach you, kindly sign and return the inventory, for which purpose a prepaid addressed label is enclosed herewith.
In this connection I would bring to your notice that in the event of your wishing to dispose of the uniform included among the personal effects, you should do so only to a person well-known to you as entitled to wear the uniform, or by sale to a reputable firm of tailors. On the other hand, you might like to know that Mrs. Mary Mathews of Officers' Kit Replacements, 72 South Audley Street, London, W.1., which is a charitable organisation instituted for the purpose of replacing the uniform of officers in cases of hardship, will probably be glad to have it.

My dear Mrs. Madgett,
Words are so futile at a time like this, but I felt I wanted you to know that my thoughts are with you.
I'm so awfully glad I met Hedley, in fact was proud to meet him. I have no children & am therefore so very grateful
[page break]
to you "Mothers & Boys" who are doing the job for us.
But, dear, don't give up hope. There are so many cases where parents have heard from their sons after quite a long interval. So much could have happened. There will be many of us who will hope & pray with you.
My sincere & loving thoughts & wishes,
Yours very sincerely,
O.W. Burnard.

Dear Mrs Madgett,
I didn't write to you before, because I though letters [deleted] like [/deleted] like these would be very harrowing to you, but as I see in the local paper you have acknowledged others, may I just tell you that you have been continually in my thought, with sincerest sympathy ever since we first heard that Hedly [sic] was missing
Am sure that all your [missing letters]iends hope with you that good news is still to come. Keep a stout heart, brave little mother, & remember only that your boy is one of Englands heroes
With love from
Isabel. Q. Pead.
