Description
Richard Wensley’s Royal Air Force Flying Log Book as Flight Engineer from 27th June 1943 until 28th September 1946. Posted to 1657 Conversion Unit and then 214 Squadron for operations. In November 1943 posted back to 1657 Conversion Unit. Operational posting to 90 Squadron. On the 5th March 1944 his aircraft was shot down, crash landing near Abbeville, but he survived.
In February 1945 flying with 242 Squadron, Transport Command and then 46 Squadron in November. In April 1946 back to 242 Squadron.
Served at RAF Stradishall, RAF Chedburgh, RAF Tuddenham, RAF Stoney Cross, RAF Merryfield.
Aircraft flown were Stirling, York.
Carried out 12 night bombing and mine-laying operations with 214 Squadron to Nuremberg, Turin, Peenemunde, Berlin, Montlucon, Modane, Hannover, Baltic Sea, Frankfurt and Bremen. His pilot was Pilot Officer Welch.
With 90 Squadron he flew 11 night bombing and mine-laying operations to The Frisian Islands, the Gironde, Cherbourg, Kiel Bay, the Kattegat. He also flew 2 special duties operations at night to the South of France. It was n the last of these that he was shot down. His pilot was Warrant Officer Edinborough.
