Description

Describes enlisting in the aircraft apprentice scheme, recruitment and training. He flew 23 operations, one as wireless operator/air gunner, 12 as navigator/bomb aimer and ten as pilot. Pilots were Squadron Leader Allen, Sergeant Stretton, Pilot Officer Campbell and Pilot Officer Parker. Operations were to Frankfurt, Heligoland, Charleville, Kiel, Fargniers, Dollbergen, Bohmte, Diepholz, Wismar, Schiphol Aerodrome, Rotterdam, Dortmund, Travemunde, Duisburg, Oslo fjord, Kattegut, Dortmund-Ems-Canal, Bordeaux, Pauillac, Essen, Emden and Magdeburg. Includes the awarding of the first Victoria Cross to a member of Roly's squadron and the circumstances leading to Roly's death in a flying accident. A map of the operations Roly to took part in, him in uniform with sergeant's insignia and civilian clothes, aircraft in flight, the crest of 49 Squadron and the headstone marking Roly's grave are included.
