Alan Gwilliam’s Flying Log Book from 23rd December 1938 until 29th September 1943. Joined RAF Volunteer Reserve. Initial pilot training at No. 8 Elementary and Reserve Flying Training School, No. 4 Initial Training Wing, No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School, RAF College Flying Training School.
Further training at 15 Operational Training Unit and then operational posting to 214 Squadron as pilot. In October 1941 posted to No. 2 Central Flying School to train as a flying instructor. After training posted to No. 3 Service Flying training School as an instructor.
In May 1942 posted to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) with No. 23 Service Flying training School. Posted to No. 21 Service Flying Training School.
Served at RAF Woodley, RAF Brough, RAF Cranwell, RAF Hampstead Norris, RAF Harwell, RAF Stradishall, RAF Honington, RAF Church Lawford, RAF South Cerney, RAF Heany, RAF Kumalo.
Aircraft flown were Magister, DH83 Fox Moth, Miles M.2X Hawk Trainer, Blackburn B.2, Oxford, Wellington, Avro Tutor.
Alan Gwilliam flew 31 night bombing operations with 214 Squadron to Emden, Kiel, Brest (Scharnhorst & Gneisenau), Cologne, Hamburg, Mannheim, Düsseldorf, Boulogne, Bremen, Münster, Osnabrück, Hannover, Frankfurt.
His pilots for his first 16 operations were Sergeant Leeke and Flying Officer MacGillivray.
On the 5 July 1941 his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire.
