Title

Le Courrier de l'Air, 24 Novembre 1942

Description

[Page 1]
The publication refers to the complex operation [Torch] drawn up during a visit of the American General Marshall and Admiral King to London in July 1942.
The importance of the joint operations of the navy and RAF Bomber and Coastal Command is described, preventing Rommel’s reinforcements and supplies, as well as protecting troops.
The preliminary phase involved landings in French North Africa on 7th and 8th November with the use of 500 ships, resulting in the fall of Algiers, Oran and Casablanca. By 11th November there was no further resistance and the local population offered assistance.
The second phase was the expulsion of the Axis from Africa’s Mediterranean coastline with French troops under General Giraud. The Germans had left Tunisia towards Tripoli. The British Army under General Anderson crossed the Tunisian border towards Bizerte and allied aircraft have bombed aerodromes in Tunis and Bizerte.

[Pages 2 and 3]
The various steps are described of the allied offensive in the desert. The Eighth Army under Lieutenant General Montgomery and General Alexander fought the Axis army under Marshal Rommel at the Qattara Depression. By early November, the Allies had isolated El Alamein, defeating Rommel’s armed forces, which retreated along the front. They evacuated Benghazi on 20th November.
The RAF destroyed military targets at Genoa and Turin with photographic evidence.
Stalin’s positive reactions to the allies’ North Africa campaign are described in an interview in Moscow by the Associated Press.

[Page 4]
The military operation is said to have transformed the war strategy with minimum loss of life.
President Roosevelt’s statement of 17th November 1942 is reproduced, explaining why he accepted General Eisenhower’s temporary political North and West Africa arrangements with Admiral Darlan. He notes that these were expedient and saved lives, but it will ultimately be up to France to decide its future.
There is a chronological list of events between 8th and 18th November, which show that Pétain has dismissed Darlan.
