Norman Mackie’s Pilots Flying Log Book from 4th April 1950 until 31st August 1956.
Posted to 12 Squadron as a pilot. On 22 October 1950 took part in a commemorative poppy drop over the El Alamein Cemetery as recorded in newspaper clippings.
On 12 December 1950 Squadron Leader Mackie’s aircraft crashed and was written off carrying out a 3 engined emergency overshoot. There were no injuries.
In June 1953 posted to No. 8 Advanced Flying Training School followed by 209 Advanced Flying School to pilot jets.
Attended 231 Operational Conversion Unit in summer 1954 for light bomber and photo reconnaissance courses. In October posted to 69 (Photo Reconnaissance) Squadron in Germany as Commanding Officer.
During early 1956 a detachment to of 69 Squadron was based in Malta.
Served at RAF Binbrook, RAF Shallufa, RAF Dalcross, RAF Bassingbourn, RAF Gutersloh, RAF Laarbruch, RAF Luqa, RAF Weston Zoyland.
Aircraft flown were Lincoln, Tiger Moth, Proctor, Canberra, Anson, Washington, Chipmunk, Varsity, Oxford, Gloster Meteor, Prentice.
Includes various newspaper clippings of the poppy drop, and Squadron Leader Mackie as Officer Commanding 69 Squadron. The latter includes a hand written note that the photograph purporting to be Mackie receiving his DFC was of the wrong person!
