Description
Norman Mackie’s Flying Log Book 1 as a pilot from 26 July 1940 until 27 September 1942. Initial training with 13 EFTS, RAF College FTS, No. 2 School of Air Navigation, 14 OTU. Posted to 83 Squadron for operations in May 1941. Further training with 14 OTU, No. 1518 Beam Approach Flight, 24 OTU, 14 OTU and 29 OTU including some operations.
Served at RAF White Waltham, RAF College Cranwell, RAF Cranage, RAF Cottesmore, RAF Scampton, RAF Honeybourne, RAF North Luffenham, RAF Upavon.
Aircraft flown were DH82A Tiger Moth, Oxford, Anson, Hampden, Manchester, Whitley, Lancaster, Wellington, Boston.
With 83 Squadron he flew 35 bombing and mine laying operations (1 day and 34 night). His pilots were Pilot Officer Sells (15 operations) and Flight Lieutenant Cook (1 operation). He was pilot for the remainder. Targets included Cologne, Brest (Scharnhorst battlecruiser), Soest, Bremen, Kiel (Gneisanau battlecruiser) , Osnabruck, Hamm, Hamburg, Frisian Islands, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Langeoog, Hürth, Düsseldorf, Stavanger, Essen, Gironde River.
He flew 3 night operations with 29 OTU as pilot. Targets included Bremen, Hamburg and Düsseldorf.
