Description

Donald Gray’s Flying Log Book as Flight Engineer from 1st February 1944 to 3rd October 1945. Completed training at 1662 Conversion Unit and No. 1 Lancaster Finishing School. Posted to 460 Squadron for operations in March 1944. After completing his first tour spent time with flying control for 150 and 170 Squadrons before being posted to No. 1 Glider Pick-up Unit in April 1945 as winch operator. Posted to 194 Squadron in Burma (now Myanmar) in July 1945 as Flight Engineer delivering supplies until the Japanese surrender in August.

Served at RAF Blyton, RAF Hemswell, RAF Binbrook, RAF Ibsley, RAF Mingaladon. Aircraft flown were Halifax, Lancaster and Dakota.

Carried out 34 Operations with 460 Squadron (16 day and 18 night). His targets included Villeneuve-St. Georges Paris, Aulnoye, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Essen, Friedrichshafen, Boulogne, Domleger, Reims, Forges Les Eaux, Crecy, Vaires, Siracourt, Vierzon, Oisemont, Orleans, Dijon, Foret du Croc, Caen, Stuttgart, Foret de Nieppe, Chateau Bernapre, Trossy St. Maximin, Pauillac, Aire, Douai, Brunswick, Falaise, Volkel, Stettin, Calais, Cape Gris Nez.

His pilots on 460 Squadron operations were Flying Officer Cullen, Flight Lieutenant Roberts and Flying Officer Gundelach.

With 194 Squadron he flew 30 day supply operations, sometimes up to three in a day. He flew from Akyab (Sittwe) to Myingyan, Toungoo and Meiktila. On these supply operations his pilot was Flying Officer C L Smith.

Includes DFM medal ribbon. Wounded 28 April 1944.
