Description
There is announcement about the allied landings on the morning of 6 June 1944, on the northern coast of Franch. There is a further statement from General Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force. He states the landings were agreed by the United Nations with their Russian allies. Everyone has a role to play, and they are encouraged to exert caution and follow instructions. France will be able to choose its officials and government after liberation. It is the start of the campaign for Western Europe.
The Germans have been blindsided by this audacious operation.
There are photographs of Stirling transport aircraft and paratroopers, as well as several photographs showing infantrymen landing and bringing their equipment ashore. There is shelling from the warships. A photograph shows some of the 4,000 ships and landing craft.
The French are encouraged to keep listening to the BBC and the America Broadcasting Station in Europe. They will be told how to co-operate with the liberation forces.
The date for the landings was agreed by Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt in Tehran. Statements are also included from Eisenhower, Montgomery and De Gaulle, expressing confidence in the outcome and urging support.
The allied troops in Italy have taken Rome and are advancing. Russian allies are resuming their Eastern offensive. There are photographs from Italy, including tanks in front of the Colosseum in Rome.
