Sir,
I am directed to refer to the letter dated 5th October, 1944, from the Department confirming that your son, No. 1204048 Flight Sergeant Phillip Marcus Matthews, Royal Air Force, was reported missing as the result of air operations on the 23rd September, 1944, and to inform you, that although no news of him has come to hand, the next of kin of Sergeant W. F. Ravenhill has received a letter stating that he (Sergeant Ravenhill) has been captured.
I am to add an expression of the Department’s sympathy with you in your anxiety, and to assure you that you will be informed of any further news received.
