EXCERPT: Sunday Companion.
It is interesting to know that whatever our task or vocation, wherever our duty takes us, in whatsoever circumstances we toil, we can still appropriate this psalm. For seafaring men Captain Roberts has arranged a nautical version, which he calls “The Pilot Psalm”.
Here it is:-
“The Lord is my Pilot;
I shall not drift.
He lighteth me across the dark waters;
He steereth me in the deep channels.
He guideth me by the Star of Holiness for His name's sake.
Yea, though I sail mid the thunders and tempests of life
I shall dread no danger, for Thou art near me.
Thy love and care they shelter me.
Thou preparest a Harbour before me in the Homeland of Eternity.
Thou anointest the waves with oil, my ship rideth calmly.
Surely sunlight and starlight shall favour me on the voyage I take;
And I will rest in the port of my God for ever”.
And so that those heroic and daring men in the air should also have the consciousness of the reality and the beauty of this Twenty-third Psalm, the Rev. Fred Stafford, of Wellingborough, has written “An Airman's Psalm”, with which we can fittingly close this meditation.
“The Lord is my Pilot; I shall not fail.
He guideth me through the clouds;
He beareth me into lofty regions.
He exalteth my spirit:
He inspireth me by His presence and His fearlessness.
Yea, though 'flak' engulf me and death draw nigh,
I will never be afraid whilst Thou art with me-my strength and my Confidence.
Thou dost preserve me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou speakest quiet words, and I am content.
Surely sun and star shall guide me
And save me throughout each flight;
And I will trust in the help of my God for ever”.
