Pilot’s flying log book for Horace Coombes covering the period from 1 November 1941 to 6 July 1951. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as pilot. He was stationed at USAAF A.C.T Det Lakeland Florida, USAAF A.C.T DET Gunter Field Alabama, USAAF A.C.T DET Elgin Field Florida, RAF Montrose (2 FIS), RAF Shawbury (11 PAFU), RAF Cark (1 SPTU), RAF Watchfield (1 BAS), RAF Northolt (140 Squadron), RAF Finningley (18 OTU), RAF Lindholme (1656 HCU), RAF Hemswell (1 LFS), RAF Wickenby (626 Squadron), RAF Warboys (PFNTU), RAF Little Staughton (582 Squadron), RAF Colerne (218 MU Test Flight), RAF Castle Bromwich (5 RFS), RAF Hooton Park (19 RFS), RAF South Cerney (CFS); Detailing his operations flown as Pilot from November 1944 to July 1945. Aircraft flown in were Stearman PT17, Vultee BT13, Harvard, Magister, Oxford, Anson, Mosquito III, Proctor, Wellington, Halifax II, Lancaster, Spitfire, Dakota, York, Lancastrian, Tiger Moth, Chipmunk and Prentice. He flew seven operations with 626 Squadron and eight with 582 Squadron plus two Operation Manna food drops on Holland, two Operation Exodus prisoner of war repatriations and one Operation Dodge flight. Targets were Wanne-Eickel, Fribourg, Dortmund, Essen, Ludwigshaven, Ulm, Coblenz, Bottrop, Bohlen, Mainz, Cologne, Herne, Hagen, Hanau, Paderborn, Lützkendorf, Plauen and Kiel. His pilot for his first 'second dickie' operation was Flying Officer Tierney. Contains stamp and note from Medical Officer RAF Rednal that Coombes has passed a test in a decompression chamber for high altitude flight.
