The 22,000lb bomb was the heaviest conventional weapon
Dropped by any air force in world war II. It was designed
By Sir Barnes Wallis as a deep penetration weapon
And was first flown on trials from Boscombe Down
In Lancaster PB 592/G in October 1944. It was first
Dropped operationally by 617 (“Dambuster”) squadron
On the Bielefeld Viaduct on 14 March 1945.
