My dear Douglas.
Each day now I am hoping you have got my first letter & I do hope it will find you well & happy as circumstances will allow. We just keep on thinking of you & looking forward to the days of peace & reunion again. I have just written a little note of thanks to the Red Cross in W.C.2. They have been getting information for me about sending papers, etc. but it seems I am not allowed to send them to you so I will put the money that Auntie Una sent away with the rest. Dad is now unable to buy razor blades, so it looks as tho’ you are not the only member of the family to grow a beard. How is it going on now, or isn’t it? Yesterday we had a very nice surprise when Hildred came to see us. She looked very sweet & pretty as usual. We had quite a busy time, as Mr & Mrs Ellwood paid their usual visit to see Peggy. Mr Ellwood is a very big man & Mrs is about the build of your old friend Mrs Lancombe so our not very

large dining room looked well occupied especially as it was a bitterly cold day & we all wanted to sit as close to the grand fire as possible. I was thinking of you so much as I knew you would [inserted] have [/inserted] so much enjoyed the cheery company. It is almost 3 weeks since your last letter arrived & I am looking eagerly forward to the next one. Well, love, we don’t seem able to put very much into these letters of ours & there is so much we would like to say if there were no censor. Did I tell you I had a long letter from Marjorie with a pretty photo of Diana Marion who is now about 7 months old? Also did I tell you that we offered her a home with us in September when Jerry became too attentive in her part of the world? What a good thing she didn’t come to Manchester! She is very much better where she is. David is being kept very busy with foot & mouth disease & is often away from home for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. Auntie Maud goes back to Mollie again about the 16th. It does seem rather a “fuss”, to us, but Auntie, as you know, always likes to be in a “fuss” Now Goodnight again & all our love to you from Mother & Dad.

Hoping that their first letter has arrived with him. Wrote thanking Red Cross for their help but noted that they had said that it was not allowed to send newspapers. Comments that razor blades are no longer available. Tells of visitor and catches up on family/friends news and gossip. Looking forward to his next letter. Apologises for lack of content of letters, concerned about the censor. Continues with other news of friends/family.
