It was opened in 1935 and in September 1939 75 Squadron and 148 Squadron were pool training units at the station with Ansons and Wellingtons before being renamed 15 Operational Training Unit (OTU) in April 1940. 215 Squadron with Wellingtons was briefly based at the station in spring 1942. In March 1944 RAF Harwell was reallocated to the Airborne Forces using Albermarles and Stirlings to tow Horsa gliders for the Normandy campaign. 13 OTU moved to RAF Harwell in late 1944 with B-25s, Bostons and Mosquitos.
