An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Darling one, I had a lovely long letter from you this morning acknowledging the lighter & telling me about your climb up Snaefell. How I wish I could have been with you! However I am going to mountaineer up North End Rd this afternoon to visit Jean Serpell & that will probably be quite enough for me with the pram.
Yesterday Betty Hughes & her friend Phyllis came in to play cards, it was quite enjoyable though I’m not specially keen on either of them. However Phyllis said she had more currants than she

knew what to do with & would let me have some, so you will probably be receiving another cake fairly soon. Since you like the other fellows in the digs I should like to send you cakes now & then to share with them (or not as you like.) By the way, does Rowan bring his lady friends to the billets?? I’m looking forward to reading your book on agriculture. Did you ever read my Left Book Club volume by Lord Addison? Of course it deals more with a policy for agriculture from the point of view of the Government, still it is interesting & I will send it to you

if you would care to read it. Let me know, would you?
Mrs Howie said that the photo taken of her did not come out well – that she would send one later, & when I write I will keep her up to that. They are away on holiday at the moment. I hope my films will be ready soon & that there will be a decent one of Frances for me to send to her. Your daughter is really the most adorable person I know except her father, I’m looking forwards to making Jean jealous this afternoon!!
Unfortunately it keeps raining on & off so it

won’t be too pleasant walking over. However Mrs Stengel may arrive more often any time, so I don’t want to put the visit off. I had a pic from Barbara this morning, she seems to be enjoying herself thoroughly.
I am having the gas fire removed from our bedroom to the back room for Mrs Stengal in case she ever wants to withdraw up here, - we hardly ever use it anyway, & the nursery must have one & I like to warm Ba’s room too when she comes home from night duty in the cold weather.
With all my love to you, dearest. I’m hoping your next letter will say you are a GB again. Has your taste come back yet & do your eyes still hurt?
Yours always Ursula.
