Dearest Joyce.
I was so thrilled to see about your baby in the Times. I've been wondering for ages how you were getting on. I do hope you & it {she, I mean) are doing well. You must be just thrilled to bits about it. Heartiest congratulations.
It's ages since I had any news of you I wrote to you at Cambridge but didn't get a chance to visit there until after you left. As you will see by the address I'm at Fighter Command now. I was attached for a week in Sept & then posted. Its a simply marvelous [sic] job but a bit hair raising. S/L Daly was sent off overseas somewhere about a month before I went. which made taking over a bit difficult. Still it will all turn out alright I hope.
Last week I spent one night at Reading. The Wingco (?) and Mary Gardner were away so there was hardly a familiar face except for Chloe who is exactly the same as ever & Jane & Ann. It is a nice place. I did realise how nice until I was thrown on the world. Doodah invited me to Goodrest for drinks which was quite fun. Did you hear about, poor old
[page break]
Frankie Wright? He was very, very ill& had just finished recuperating in Torquay & was on the point of leaving when it was bombed & he was badly hurt. It does seem bad luck.
The Bird is still in Alex & in true Bird fashion has rented an enormous villa on the sea front which she shares with two others. She says it is simply heavenly and has it filled with the most exotic flowers. Actually she is still awfully homesick & not really very happy.
Tomorrow I'm having lunch with Wingco (?) Woodland. I haven't seen her since I came back to civilisation so it will be quite fun.
Do take care of yourself and please don't bother to reply to this because I'm sure you have your hands full. I just wanted you to know how glad I am about it.
Love to David & lots for yourself & the baby

Jeanine
