An account of the resource
529 items. Collection concerns Pilot Officer James Douglas Hudson, DFC (755052 Royal Air Force) who joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in June 1939 and trained as an observer. While on route to Malta in August 1940 his Blenheim crashed in Tunisia and he was subsequently interned for two and a half years by Vichy French in Tunisia and Algeria. After being freed he returned to Great Britain and after navigator retraining completed a tour of 30 operations on 100 Squadron. The collection contains letters to and from his parents and from French penfriends while interned in Tunisia and Algeria, newspaper cuttings of various events, logbooks and lists of operations, official documents and photographs. A further 23 items are in two sub-collections with details of navigator examinations and postcards of Laghouat Algeria.<br /><br />The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Elizabeth Smith and Yvonne Puncher and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.<br />
<p>This collection also contains items concerning Louis Murray and Harry Bowers. Vous voilà revenu d'Alger vous connaissez la capitale de l'Algérie. Comment trouvez-vous celle que l'on dénommé “Alger la Blanche”? il y a n'est-ce pas une grande différence entre elle et notre petit Médéa; ce n'est pas du tout même chose Alger est la grande ville, Médéa le gros village avec tous ses commérages et ses petits histoires, mais malgré tous il n'est pas si déplaisant que ça, j'y vis depuis 15 ans et je l'aime bien.

Vous trouvez que vous ne parlez bien le français? ce n'est pas mon avis, je pense vous dire en tous sincérité que vous le parler et l'écrivez assez correctement, et que je ne serai jamais capable de parler et d'écrire l'anglais aussi bien, mais cela n'est qu'un détail.
Andrée regrette elle aussi que votre ami ne connaisse votre langue e qu'elle ne puisse parler l'anglais, mais je suppose qu'ils se comprennent tout de même, et puis malgré tous vous êtes là pour faire l’interprète. N'avez-vous pas fait aujourd'hui votre promenade quotidienne, n'êtes vous pas allé à Dormiette[?] il me semble vous avoir vu passer.
