Initially used for Polish prisoners of war the camp became one of the largest in Germany. By the end of the war over 300,000 prisoners had passed through it from over 40 countries; 3,000 Soviet prisoners died there. Some RAF non-commissioned aircrews were held there from August 1943 onwards. When it was liberated by the Russians in April 1945 the camp held 30,000 prisoners of whom 7,250 were British.
