Operational posting to 49 Squadron as a wireless operator in July 1941. In June 1942 posted to 24 Operational Training Unit. Served at RAF West Freugh, RAF Cottesmore, RAF Scampton, RAF Honeybourne, RAF Long Marston. Aircraft flown were Battle, Anson, Hampden, Hereford, Manchester, Whitley, Lysander, Walrus. With 49 Squadron he flew 29 bombing and mine laying operations (1 day, 28 night) to Kiel, Magdeburg, Braunschweig, Bremen, Cologne, Berlin, Kiel Bay, Hamburg, Borkum, Duisburg, Mannheim, Lorient, Wilhelmshaven, Hüls, Rennes, Brest, Helgoland Bight, Essen, Wittmund, Dortmund. His pilots on these operations were Pilot Officer Cook, Flight Lieutenant Fisher, Sergeants Flint, Latty, Bow and Burton. On 5 January 1942 his aircraft crashed on take-off due to an engine failure. No injuries. He also flew one night bombing operation with 24 Operational Training Unit to Bremen as part of a 1000 aircraft operation. His pilot was Flight Sergeant Silva.
