Dear Marie,
I think I’ve a couple of letters of yours since last I wrote. Incidentally I am now stationed in Herts about 3 miles from the village of Royston, which is about 2/3 the size of Driffield. We are only 2 hours from London on the train. So far I’m not too impressed , as the Yanks left this place in rather a mess, & the tucker & …. …also poor compared to Driff. However our Aussie Group Commander arrived today & no doubt he’ll again throw his weight about(…. …. …. …. ) to see that things are brought up to scratch for us. …. …. …. Scottie. Junior officers at the moment are definitely kicking …. …. …. Another squadron arrived here the other day & we did …. …. …. Our crew has a little pre war …. …. …. Quarters…. ….have housemaids hence (or knees) getting …. …. In. We have no batwomen yet.
Before leaving Yorkshire last weekend I was lucky enough to see the Aussie cricketers in action against a fairly strong English team at Scarborough. Our lads hit up 500 in a day. Pepper got 168 but Miller failed miserably only getting 71 in the 30 mins he was at the wicket. The Pongoes were out for 250 odd & 140 the only one to get … was Fishlock with 95 &35. Hutton made 42 & 0. Ellis had them completely tied up getting 10 wickets in all. Pepper and Pettiford also bowled well. You had better send me Flegg & Sons address again. I’ve often thought of them in London, but their telephone address is down in Surrey somewhere.
The only eatables we need here now I think is tinned butter for toast making in the winter. I have a little electric stove. I hardly see myself home for Christmas. Don’t worry about it if they are unproanable ? unprobable, but other blokes get films just in parcels in ordinary cake tins without any special wrapping at all. The address of the Colletts is - 17 Prospect Terrace, Allerton, Bradford, Yorks.
I didn’t know Leo Francis had made the grade at North. Glad to hear of the release of Pat Cross, Alec Breen etc.
We are now on Liberators & I hope to be on the India run within a month or so. We may … get as far as Singapore to collect …. …. …. ….
Re Dad’s queries …. …. …. …. …. Life forbids the …. …. …. ….enough to do …. …. ….It’s pretty grim …. …. ….down eventually. …. …. ….is impossible at present. Is Dan talking of going home yet? Bert Evatt is over now & is really brilliant I think. What a gig he makes Chifley look. Ford also looks a fool beside him. At least Evatt seems to be the only one with any clues at all on the Japs. He released Justice Weller’s list of atrocities yesterday to the papers & it rather rocked them.
Hope you are all well.
Love to all
Pat</text>

His aircraft was landed on fire at a German occupied airfield in Antwerp in August 1941. He was the first airman to escape back to England via the Comète escape line. The rest of his crew were captured and made prisoners of war. The collection contains accounts of his escape, letters of research from Belgium helper, other official correspondence from the Red Cross and the Royal Air Force, photographs of places and people, newspaper cuttings propaganda leaflets and maps of airfield and escape route. In addition there is an interview with Jack Newton about his experiences in the wartime RAF.

Dear F. Sgt Newton,
Thank you very much for your letter dated 17th April, 1942. I really must congratulate you on your escape and I only wish I could see you to hear first-hand details of what is probably a most interesting story.
I have written in the enclosed envelope to Wing Commander Gillman a short letter of recommendation in respect off your prospective commission and have, as you see, addressed it so that in the event of you having been posted, or at any rate, in the event of you having a new commanding officer by the time you receive this letter, you can still avail yourself of it.
I expect you will be having a fairly easy time of things these days, which is more than can be said of what the chaps are doing out here, where we are pretty well as much occupied one way or another as they were in the Battle of Britain.
Yours Sincerely

Dear Vic,

Sorry I didn't have time to see you before I left, old man, but I had to dash off to catch the 1.40 bus into Banbury, and I don't think you had landed by the time I left.

Anyway, thanks for posting on the two letters, and there's the full address above should any more arrive during

About the bike, old lad, I clean forgot to enquire the cost of rail transportation at the station, so I still don't know how much it will be. Anyway, if you will bung it on as soon as you can to Royston, and drop me a line enclosing bill for same etc. etc., I'll send [deleted] it [/deleted] off the sheckles by return post. Oh, and don't forget the pump.

Believe me, you [deleted letter] need a bloody bike in this place. We [underlined] pupils [/underlined] live in dirty great private house just over a mile from the camp, and there is – naturally – no transport. I'm absolutely brassed already with walking to and from the bloody camp day after day. So for Christ's sake, Vic, sling that bike along before I die of

I got myself a 48 as soon as I arrived here – and pissed off for three days (using Chipping [indecipherable word] Anson FLT. methods). Actually, I wish I'd stayed away a bit longer now, as I've done sweet F.A. since I arrived back. From what I can see they don't seem to care a damn what you do here.

When I first came, the C.G.l. informed me that I was going straight into a pupil crew just finishing the course and piss, more or less, straight off on ops. [underlined] Me [/underlined] ! with a sprog crew, mind you! I put a stop to those bloody ideas straight away. There are a couple of

S/LDR's here on a conversion course – bags of experience etc, so I told the C.G.I. that I'd fly with one of those or nobody at all. That shook him I can tell you. Anyway the outcome of it was that he agreed to it, so that's how it is – I'm flying with a S/LDR. when I fly that is. I've done F.A. so far and I'm not likely to for a week or so. Strikes me I shall be seeing quite a bit of the girl for the next couple of weeks! They'll probably collar me for a bit of screening work which I'm here to

Tell Possy and Smithy that I've seen Red McKnight. Had a tete-a-tete etc. Quite a decent bloke – one of the lads.

Incidentally, apologise to Possy for me, old man, for not seeing him before I left, but the same reason applies as it did to you. Not forgetting old Grinder of course.
