Official information has been received that Sergt. Geoffrey Beckett, of the R.A.F., youngest son of the late Mr. E.F. Beckett and Mrs. Beckett formerly of Midland Bank House, Market Place, Heanor, is missing from a recent operational flight.

Sergt. Beckett has many friends in Heanor district, and hopes are entertained that he may have survived and that better news may soon be heard of him.

GERMANY RAIDED: 18 LOST

Targets in North-West Germany were attacked by Bomber Command planes – [underlined] 18 of which are missing – on Thursday night. [/underlined] Mines were also laid in enemy waters.

Results could not be seen because of low cloud.

It was the third night attack on the Reich this month. The first on December 2nd on Frankfurt, and the second four nights later on South-West Germany, were both made in bad weather.

There have been two daylight raids on Germany so far this month.

Lottie May Beckett also cut out a poem, written as part of a newspaper National Savings campaign, which is poignantly entitled, ‘I wonder where he is now? The accompanying picture, shows a young mother looking up out of her child’s bedroom window at the out bound bombers, which reminds me that Geoff thought that he should be the one to go to war, being the only unmarried son and also that Flying Officer McNamara and Sgt. Read were both married members of the missing crew.

On December the 6th “Ma Shippo” wrote a letter to Geoffs mother, as did many other people.

My Dear Mrs Beckett.
Thanks for P.C. So sorry to hear that Geoff is missing, I feel grieved for you. But don’t give up hope, he may have bailed out same as Dick Daft – he has been missing since May last and nothing heard for months. Now he is at home in Heanor and I know if Geoff got in a tight corner he would do the same. We all hope and pray for his return …….
Yours sincerely E.A. Shipley.

The empty ‘A’ flight pans in the wet, cold grey dawn, reflected the lonely melancholy felt by the ground crews and then by all the R.A.F. Waddington personnel, was to be shared again by the author in the twenty-first century.
I have researched Geoff’s life over several years and discovered so much about him and his world. It was a military world that I followed him into, in the peacetime that he had helped preserve,

I felt a growing sense of unhappiness as I wrote up the last missions; I was losing the uncle I had found. Fate had decreed that December 17th 1942 was his date with eternity. Fortunately, young cheerful Geoff Beckett did not know that when he climbed aboard ‘B – Beer’ that night. He might have had misgivings about the weather, or the nature of such a low level mission, but he would have kept them to himself as he completed his pre-flight checks.
The crew of KM-B W4126 were now listed, ‘Missing’, or FTR, that dreadful term “failed to return”. Within a short time the crew’s lockers and beds would have had all their personal effects removed before anyone had time to dwell on their occupants untimely fate. Those nearest would shrug and quietly pass on to others that, “McNamara’s ‘B – Beer’s got the chop.”
Their epitaph spoken, they were gone.

The telegrams were sent and received with dread. Letters followed from the Squadron Commander and the uncertainty for the families began. Some relatives were informed quite quickly as to whether their loved one was a prisoner of war, or dead, but for others the worry of not knowing went on for months or years.

The ‘Sheffield Daly Telegraph’ on Saturday 19th of December 1942, carried a small article entitled,
‘GERMANY RAIDED: 18 LOST’. Targets in North West Germany were attacked by Bomber Command planes – 18 of which are missing – on Thursday night. Mines were also laid in enemy waters.
Results could not be seen because of low cloud.

Lancaster. B1. A photo of KM-B. W4126, newly delivered to R.A.F. Waddington. 44 Squadron, (the first Lancaster sqdn). From the July – November 1942 production batch. Originally coded KM-G in July ’42 then became KM-B (number 3) when R5508 left the squadron, having been the Lancaster that S/Ldr Nettleton won his V.C. on the 28/4/42 Augsburg raid. L7538 was the original KM-B.

MINOR OPERATIONS

27 Lancasters of 5 Group were sent on raids to 8 small German towns and 16 Stirlings and 6 Wellingtons of 3 Group attempted to attack the Opel works at Fallersleben. This type of limited operation proved to be a costly failure. 9 of the 27 Lancasters were lost and, at Fallersleben, only 3 aircraft bombed the target, in cloud conditions, and 6 Stirlings and 2 Wellingtons were lost from this part of the night’s operations. 75 (New Zealand) Squadron, based at Newmarket, lost 4 out of the 5 Stirlings sent on the Fallersleben raid, including the aircraft of its commanding officer, Wing Commander V. Mitchell, whose name is on the Runnymede Memorial to the Missing.
50 aircraft were dispatched to lay mines from Denmark to southern Biscay – 1 Lancaster was lost – and there were 5 O.T.U. sorties to France.

[underlined] APPENDIX [/underlined]

[underlined] The last moments of W4126, at 6.47 pm 17.12.42 [/underlined]

[hand drawn diagram of aircraft showing positions of the individuals on board at the time of the crash]

[underlined] Sgt. Jones. [/underlined] It is most likely that he was dead or injured in rear turret, hit by flak.
Photograph of crashed a/c does appear to show some flak damage)

The crew had “resolved to have a pact, that the two married crew members, F/O McNamara and Sgt Read, should get out first”…..
(Sgt. Read’s testimony)

[underlined] F/O Loree [/underlined] was not at his bomb aimer’s position, although this was where his parachute was stowed. He was not seen by Sgt. Read, so was behind the flaming inferno in the fuselage. He died in the plane. Perhaps he tried to fight the fire.
(Note written in War Graves handbook, Mothers writing, Based on Texel civil authorities testimony. 1945)

Sgt Read did not see [underlined] Sgt McLeod, [/underlined] the W/OP He was not at his front turret station, so was in the vicinity of his radio. His parachute was stowed by the main spar leading edge He was behind the flames in the fuselage, either dead, overcome by the blazing inferno, or unable to reach his parachute. Perhaps he tried to fight the fire.

[underlined] F/O McCleery [/underlined] was seen to be dead, lying slumped across his nav’ table, hit by flak.
(Sgt Read’s testimony and confirmed by a written note in the War Graves handbook, written by mother and based on the Texel civil authorities testimony)

On receipt of the “bail out” order, [underlined] Sgt Beckett [/underlined] left his turret, put on his parachute and bailed out from the rear exit on the starboard side, only to be hit and killed by enemy fire during his descent.
(Mothers note, written in 1945, as told by Texel civil authority.)

[underlined] F/O McNamara, [/underlined] gave ‘bail out’ order over Texel then roused Sgt. Read who was hit. At the last moment, he left his pilot’s seat and kicked Sgt. Read out of the front hatch. He had been sat on his parachute, but was too low to escape from the doomed aircraft as it went into a vertical dive.
(Sgt. Read’s testimony)

Once [underlined] Sgt. Read [/underlined] opened the front escape hatch, this would inevitably have intensified the flames burning from the cockpit, back down the fuselage.

[underlined] Sgt. Read [/underlined] did not know if any other crew were still aboard, other than F/O McCleery who was dead and F/O McNamara, whose shoes he saw on his shoulders, kicking him out of the front hatch.
(Verbal testimony) Sgt Read survived. POW.

The Pathfinders succeeded in illuminating the Dummer See, a large lake north-east of the target which was used as a run-in point. The town of Osnabruck was then found and marked. The bombing was well concentrated, with most of the attack falling in the centre and the southern parts of the target. Osnabruck’s report shows that 149 houses were destroyed, 530 were seriously damaged and 2,784 lightly damaged. 6 industrial premises were destroyed and 14 damaged. Other places hit were 6 public buildings, 5 churches, 4 schools, 1 hospital and the local gasworks. 65 people were killed – 45 civilians, 16 policemen or servicemen and 4 foreign workers – and 151 were injured.

The bombers encountered cloud and icing and winds which had not been forecast. No clear identification or marking of Hamburg was made. 150 crews reported bombing, 133 believing themselves to be in the Hamburg area, 17 claiming attacks in other places. Hamburg reports thick cloud and heavy rain and says that many bombs fell in the Elbe or in open country. There were, however, 26 fires in Hamburg of which 3 were large ones. Casualties were 3 people killed and 16 injured. 1 bomber crashed in the city’s main cemetery, in the Ohlsdorf district; this is where many R.A.F. men who died while raiding this part of Germany are buried in a Commonwealth War Graves Commission section.

A thin layer of cloud and some ground haze concealed Stuttgart and the Pathfinders were not able to identify the centre of the city. Heavy bombing developed to the south-west and south and the outlying residential districts of Vaihingen, Rohr, Mohringen and Plieningen, all about 5 miles from the centre, were hit. 88 houses were destroyed and 334 seriously damaged; 28 people were killed and 71 injured. The Stuttgart report says that 2 bombers attacked the centre of the city at low level and dropped bombs on to the main railway station which caused severe damage to the wooden platforms and some trains in the station.

The Pathfinders illuminated the target well and bombing was very accurate. Residential and industrial areas were both extensively damaged. “On December 8, (5 Group (ours)) was detailed to attack Turin (with 138 aircraft). Bad weather over England, flak and cloud over France, the Alps the same as usual. (Diary: “Low cloud over France and great concentration of searchlights on French coast, but slipped through. Someone flashed ‘V for Victory’ in Morse at us as we crossed the Alps. All towns in mountains well lit by street and house lights.”) And there was Turin – brilliantly lit by flares on the plain far below. Red and blue streams of tracers coming up to 10,000 feet, heavy flak bursts above it, a few searchlights, and our aircraft everywhere in the sky.

“It was the shortest, most concentrated, and accurate blitz I have seen. The loads were incendiaries and 4,000-pounders. We bombed among the first, then flew around for twenty minutes watching the fireworks. The incendiaries were laid down in mile-long strips that looked as though someone had flung down a bucketful of glittering jewelry. [sic] Their brilliant glow outlined the buildings sharply, and the patterns, from our height, made Xs, Ns, Ts, and so forth, on the town. The 4,000-pounders made terrific geysers and gaping black holes among the bands of incendiaries. A very pretty sight, scientifically, of course. Even when I see buildings blowing up and in flames, I can’t imagine people in them. It’s like looking at a picture on a screen. And so back to base. Photos showed first blazing merrily.

[underlined] OCTOBER. 6TH/7TH. [/underlined]

Made my first trip tonight to [underlined] Osnabruck. [/underlined] I first heard that I was on a night flying test (N.F.T.) at 1515 & at 1555 was told it was an op. We took off at 19.29 – I had given Sgt. Bell (924) a few instructions just in case - & we reached the target early on [inserted] (9.20 pm.) [/inserted] We stooged around over it and bombed at 9.33, 4000 lb made a mess! We saw other a/c bombing and nipped back, keeping careful lookout for night fighters. Nothing seen & landed 12.20 a.m. Jolly good first trip. Bed at 2.45 a.m.

[underlined] November. Genoa. [/underlined] [inserted] 6/7 [/inserted] First trip as a crew. Easy trip we certainly helped flatten it out. Nearly lost on return, wireless U/S. Circled for 1 1/2 hrs. round Swindon & finally managed

to land at Harwell at [deleted] 6 [/deleted] 7.50 am. 10 hrs. 20 mins. in the air! Left there 11.45 & landed base 2 pm. Dead tired.

NOV. [inserted] 7/8 SAT [/inserted] [underlined] Genoa [/underlined] again. Much the same as before though this time landed Tangmere due to weather. Bombs burst right on target. Re-landed next day at Yankee ‘drome back by transport.

[underlined] Nov. [/underlined] [inserted] 9/10 [/inserted] [underlined] HAMBURG! [/underlined] Did we quake. Quite eventful though not too successful. 10/10 Cloud. Short 5 hrs trip.

[underlined] NOV. [/underlined] [inserted] 20/21 [/inserted] [underlined] TURIN. [/underlined] Quite hot reception. Low attack & seen by machine gunner up on mountain sides, firing [underlined] DOWN [/underlined] on us! Damned hot while it lasted. Very successful attack.

[underlined] NOV. [/underlined] [inserted] 22/23 [/inserted] [underlined] STUTTGART. [/underlined] Quite a long trip & successful attack made. Saw bags of other kites. No night fighters seen.
