Detailing his flying training, operations flown and post war flying duties with Radio Warfare Establishment. He was stationed at RAF Madley, RAF Llandwrog, RAF Chipping Warden, RAF Foulsham, RAF Watton and RAF Mildenhall. Recently, after 60 years, the sprightly English lady and her husband visited the place where her brother, 23 year old Flight Sergeant Peter Raeburn Jenkinson, was killed whilst a member of a seven man Lancaster bomber crew. During a heavy air attack by the Royal Air Force over Stuttgart on 28 January 1945 the four- engined machine was shot down by a German fighter and broke up in the forest near the parish of Michelbach in Neckar Odenwald district, The dead airmen were interred in the Michelbach cemetery. A memorial to the occurrence has been erected in the area. Only many years later did the family learn where and under what circumstances the young Flight Sergeant had been killed. In 1983 they got in contact with the Augsburg air historian Hans Grimminger, and the Payne family travelled to Germany. At the centre of interest is also the fate of another of Evelyn Payne's brothers, that of Philip Jenkinson. His Halifax was shot down over the estate of the Waldhor family in Allgau. He and his crew were able to get out and set off on a nine day Odyssey. Since then a deep friendship has developed between the two families. "The one good thing that came from the war was that we have found friends in Germany", says Evelyn Payne. Transcription Text transcribed from audio recording or document “The tale of a WHITE FEATHER” Peter Jenkinson’s story has to commence from the age of 13 when he arrived home from school during the day and collapsed when his mother opened the door to him. From this, he ended up in hospital with double pneumonia and had to have an empyema, This meant he had to have 5 inches of rib removed from the back of his chest to drain off the fluid from his lungs. No Penicillin in those days. so what was known the crisis time, when the lines had reached its peak and he would either live or die. The usual medication in those days was to feed the patient on champayne. [sic] The cheerful feeling gave them a better chance to live. A terrible few days for mother and so a tremendous relief for her when she returned from visiting him and said “he will live, he has come through the crisis”. We are not sure what his age was when he had his next illness (this was in his teens). He had an appendicitis with an absess [sic] which caused peritonitis, all his intestines became septic. Again he nearly died. Only to have a year or so later yet another serious illness. This time it was bovine TB. Mother said it was due to milk from one of our neighbour’s cows. This was when mother bought a cow, being the only way to enable her to give him all the milk he had to drink. She used to milk the cow just outside the garden in front of the garage at “Penforder”. the cottage where we lived at St Breward, in North Cornwall. This was why each time Peter was ill he went to hospital at Bodmin. No National Health in those days, so all the fees to be paid for hospital treatment came from the 1p a week hospital fund! In about 1937 Peter joined the Bristol aircraft Company as an apprentice engineer but with the outbreak of war he immediately volunteered for RAF aircrew. Much to his disappointment he was declared medically unfit, obviously as a result of his previous serious illness. He continued to work as an aircraft engineer with the Bristol Aircraft Company but he was determined to serve as aircrew and volunteered twice more but both times was found to be medically unfit. Following his failure to pass a medical to join the RAF as Aircrew for the third time Peter continued working for the Bristol Aircraft Company as an Engineer. Sometime in 1942 he was sent down to RAF Predannack in Cornwall to carry out a modification to the tail planes of Beaufighters, whilst there he went to a local dance one evening, we are not sure where this was, it could have been at the RAF Station or in Helston. At the end of the evening he was approached by a young lady who gave him an envelope which he thought might contain her address or telephone number but it came as a great shock to find it was a white feather! indicating that he was a coward for not being a member of the fighting services. On his return to Bristol he found a sports shop and bought a football bladder. His idea was to use the bladder as a means of improving his lung capacity in the hope that he might be able to volunteer once more for Aircrew duties and pass the necessary medical by blowing up the column of mercury to the required height and hold it there for the necessary 30 seconds!. This he was able to do and he was at last accepted for training to become a Flight Engineer. Following Initial Training he went [page break] to RAF St Athen where he finally passed out as a Flight Engineer on Lancaster Aircraft and joined No 166 Squadron at RAF Kirmington in Lincolnshire for Operations. During August and September he took part in thirteen raids on enemy territory. Early in October 1944 he was one of twenty seven crews to transfer to join 153 Squadron at RAF Scampton. From October 44 until January 45 Peter took part in a further sixteen attacks deep into the heart of German territory. It is now know that he had a very tough time but he never discussed any of his operational experiences with his family. On the 2 [number obscured] of January 1945 he was the first Flight Engineer of 153 Squadron to be awarded the DFM for heroic deeds. In his last letter to his parents he said he had something special to tell them but he did not say what it was. The [deleted] following [/deleted] night [inserted] of [/inserted] the 28th of January Peter and his crew took off for an attack on Stuttgart. They failed to return and it was subsequently learned that their aircraft had been shot down by an enemy fighter and his whole crew had lost their lives. The story of Peter does not finish here. Nearly 20 years later in October 1974, the family received the news that the seven members of Peter’s crew were to be honoured by the German community of Michelback a small village south of Heidelberg. A local sculptor and locksmith had erected a large sand stone memorial at a place where their aircraft had crashed. Unfortunately the family received the news too late to enable them to attend the unveiling ceremony on the 13th of October 1974. They learned that the ceremony had been attended by Air Commodore L.G.P. Martin, British Air Attache German Air Force and many of the local dignitaries and inhabitants. It was not until 1983 that Peter’s brother and sister were able to visit the memorial. It has to be said that they were amazed by the friendliness and hospitality of the local people. They were met by the Bergomaster [sic] and the sculptor together with a contingent of local dignitaries. The Memorial is a large block of red sandstone weighing 3 tons or more. On it is a large metal plaque which has the words (in German) “On January 28 1945 a Four-engined English bombing plane crashed at this place; seven airmen were killed; Also, fixed to the stone is what was described as the Airmans sign, an emblem depicting the earth, the water and the sun, and, in the middle of the stone is a large fragment of one of the jettisoned bombs (thought by the sculptor to be a piece of the aircraft). The stone is encompassed by a wrought iron fence which incorporates two eternal flames, a cross for each member of the crew. The crew were initially buried in the local churchyard and given a large granite headstone with the crews names embossed on it. We were told that they were buried with full military honours on the insistance [sic] of the Bergomaster [sic] who had served as a pilot in WW1. The crew now rest in the war graves cemetary [sic] at Bad Tolz, south of Munich, but their original head-stone remains in the churchyard at Michalbach. Peter’s DFM was subsequently awarded to his brother, Philip Jenkinson, at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 1946. Transcription Text transcribed from audio recording or document [underlined] EPILOGUE [/underlined] As recorded in paragraph 59b, F/O Jones and his crew, flying Lancaster PB638(‘O’-Oboe) failed to return from a raid on Stuttgart on 28th Jan. 1945. Following an attack by a German night-fighter, ‘Oboe’ crashed at Michelbach, Aglasterhausen, (about 12 miles south-east of Heidelberg) with the loss of all lives. The crew were given a christian burial in the local churchyard; they were later re-interred in the Imperial War Graves Cemetery located at Bad Tölz (approx 25 miles due south of Munich). However, an original headstone remains in the churchyard at Michelbach. Some years after the war, a Michelbach resident, Herr Karl Frauhammer, himself a refugee who had been left severely disabled as a result of war wounds and therefore unable to fully follow his profession of blacksmith, designed and created a war memorial to honour the memory of the dead crew. A large block of sandstone incorporates a piece of the aircraft wreckage and bears a wrought iron motif and commemorative plaque. Standing before the sandstone is a low gateway fo decorative wrought ironwork; inset are seven gilt crosses and a symbolic four-engined aircraft (unfortunately it looks more like a Flying Fortress than a Lancaster - but does not detract from the obvious sincerity of the creator’s intentions). The commemorative plaque, freely translated, reads:- “On 28th January 1945, a four-engined British bomber aircraft crashed at this spot, killing all seven members of its crew”. The memorial, which is set alongside a well-known scenic walk in a peaceful woodland on the outskirts of Michelbach, was unveiled on Sunday, 13th Oct. 1074 in a ceremony attended by the British Air Attache, Bonn; the British Consul-General, Stuttgart; the local German Air Force commander; and local dignitaries including the Burgomeister and heads of all community services. Also present were the parents of the crew’s Wireless Operator (F/Sgt John Wilson Milburn) together with contingents representing the RAF, the German Air Force and the Fire Services. The ceremony did not pass unnoticed. The Daily Telegraph of 14th October 1974 reported:- “In an unusual, or even unique ceremony, a small German village paid tribute to the memory of seven British airmen of No. 153 Squadron, who died there in 1945”. Similar reports appeared in various British and German provincial papers, and in RAF News. [underlined] ACKNOWLEDGEMENT [/underlined] The foregoing information was provided by Phillip Jenkinson - brother of the crew’s Flight Engineer, F/Sgt Peter Jenkinson, DFM. Phillip was himself a Halifax mid-upper gunner with No. 10 Squadron, when shot down in 1943; his pilot and rear gunner were killed - the rest survived. (By an amazing coincidence, although he died 300 miles away and some 18 months later, Peter’s final grave at Durnbach lies directly alongside those of Phillip’s old crew-mates). Transcription Text transcribed from audio recording or document [RAF Crest] ROYAL AIR FORCE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE NEWS RELEASE 105/74 October 11, 1974 GERMANS HONOUR LANCASTER CREW The seven members of a Lancaster bomber who died in an attack in 1945 are to be honoured by the German community of Michelbach, near Heidleberg, at a ceremony beside a new memorial to their memory. The crew - a flying officer and six flight sergeants of No 153 Squadron - perished in an attack on Stuttgart on January 28, 1945. Their aircraft crashed at Michelbach and after the war they were reinterred in the military cemetery at Durnbach. Now a local sculptor has erected a sandstone memorial at the point where the Lancaster crashed. An official remembrance ceremony is to be held at the memorial on Sunday (October 13). Air Commodore L G P Martin, British Air Attache in Bonn, will attend the ceremony at which contingents of the RAF and the Federal German Air Force will also be present. As part of the simple ceremony, Air Commodore Martin will lay a wreath “from the Royal Air Force” on the spot. Others will be laid by the burgomeister of Aglasterhausen, by the local German Air Force Commander and by the British Consul in Stuttgart, Mr H E J Hale. Transcription Text transcribed from audio recording or document 1 Recollections of the navigator of one of the Lancasters which took part in the attack of Dresden on 13th/14th February 1945. One of the Lancasters which bombed Dresden was “P” Peter which was one of the fifteen aircraft from 153 Squadron which was based at Scampton, Lincolnshire. The crew of “P” Peter was made up of a South African, Donald Legg who was the pilot, a Canadian Russell Rawlings, the wireless operator, a Welshman from Liverpool, Dave Jones, who was the bomb aimer, an Englishman Andy Andrews, the upper gunner and three [page break] 2. Scots, Ian Henderson, the navigator Jack Ross the flight engineer and Jock Beat the rear gunner. Donald Legg, the South African was 32 and much older than the other members of the crew who were in their early twenties. The Lancaster “P” Peter was the second one of that name which this crew had had. Their first one had been destroyed a few weeks earlier when after a bombing operation on the Urft dam the first “P” Peter had been hit by flak which had started a fire in the port engine. The fire could not be extinguished but the pilot had been able to fly as far as Brussells [sic] and to land there. Brussells [sic] was at that time in the hands of the Allies. [page break] 3. At the briefing before the operation the crews were advised that the target was to be Dresden and that the Russians had particularly asked that the RAF carry out the attack to help them. The Russians had believed that there was a build up of German troops and armour in Dresden preparing to make a counter attack on them. To the crews involved it was simply another operation, the principal difference between it and the others being that it was for a longer distance than the average operation and that they would be under possible attack from enemy fighters and flak for a longer period of time. [page break] 4. There was a strong wind from the west blowing when “P” Peter took off at 21.22 pm. After climbing to 10,000 feet it joined the main bomber force at Reading and then headed south east on a course of 148° crossing the English coast near Eastbourne and the French coast near Abbeyville. It then altered course to 109° until 0053 am when at a point 20 miles from Darmstadt it altered course to 086° and flew on it for 14 minutes for about 65 miles heading in the direction of Nurnberg. It then altered course again to 081° and flew towards a point to the north of Nurnberg. [page break] 5. At 0107 am it altered course to 045° and flew towards Leipzig. When about 35 miles south of Leipzig it made its last change of course to 082° direct to Dresden which it reached at 0138. It had now flown 843 miles in 4 hours and 16 minutes and was at a height of 18000 feet. The temperature was minus 23c. and the speed of the wind was 82 miles per hour. The bomb aimer Dave Jones then directed the pilot to the target which was a factory on the south bank of the Elbe and released the bomb load accurately on the target at 1.40 am. [page break] 6. Immediately after the bombs were released the navigator gave the pilot a new couse [sic] to fly south east from Dresden for 14 miles. At 146 am the pilot was asked to change his course to 243° ie to the south west and to fly to a point 25 miles south of Chemnitz (which incidentally the crew returned to on another operation the following night) After flying 62 miles on this course the aircraft again changed course to 226° and flew to a point about 20 miles south east of Nurnberg “P” Peter then flew the next 111 miles on a course of 248° to a point about 20 miles south of Stuttgart which it reached at 3.28 am. At that point the navigator asked the pilot to change course to 268° and to fly on that course for 110 miles to a point 25 miles south of Strasbourg which was reached at 4.13 am. “P” Peter was still flying at 18,000 feet into a westerly head wind which had increased to 90 mph. The pilot then realised that there was not enough petrol in the tanks to get home if the last dog leg on the flight plan was followed and that it was essential to fly on a straight course back to Scampton. He therefore asked the navigator to work out a new course direct to Base and was given a course of 305%[sic]. He reduced height from 18,000 feet [page break] 8. to 10,000 feet at which height the speed of the wind fell from 90 mph to 45 mph. At the lower height the temperature rose from minus 23c to minus 8c. There were still 460 miles to fly to base. “P” Peter crossed the French coast near Dunkirk at 6.21 am and reached Scampton at 7.36 am with its fuel tanks almost empty. Due to diversionary tactics which confused the Germans no enemy fighters were encountered on this operation but this was very exceptional and there had been no sign of the Luftwaffe being any less strong or active previous to or after the Dresden operation. In the previous week “P” Peter had taken part in a raid of Politz near Stellin and had being [sic] damaged after being hit in the port [page break] 9. engine. On the following night, the 14th of February “P” Peter and its crew were detailed to fly on another long flight to Chemnitz which was 35 miles west of Dresden when the aircraft was hit 5 times. Most of the Dresden crews were given time to rest after the long Dresden flight and the writer cannot remember why his crew were asked to fly on two very long flights on two nights running. In the following week on 21st February when “P” Peter and its crew took part in a raid on Duisburg the flight engineer Jack Ross counted 5 Lancasters going down in flames after being hit by enemy fighters or anti aircraft fire. The personal views of the navigator about the attack on Dresden are that at the time it was just one other operation which was intended to give assistance to the Russian allies and be a further step in defeating the enemy which had still a powerful war machine in operation and was quite capable of carrying on the war long enough to develop and use the more powerful weapons which they were working on namely guided rockets and the atom bomb. He firmly believes that the devastating destruction caused to Dresden, which was contributed to by an exceptionally strong wind that night, was such a psychological blow to the Germans that it resulted in the war ending [page break] 11. many months earlier than it would otherwise have done and so saved probably hundreds of thousands of lives of death camp prisoners, British and American servicemen and British civilians. At this stage of the war Germany still occupied much of Europe including Yugoslavia, Greece and the Channel Islands. Jews were still being murdered and the gas chambers were still operating in the concentration camps. The Germans had developed a new weapon, the V2, and were attacking London with these rockets. There was no clear indication of when the war which was in its fifth year would end. The orders to bomber crews were to hit only military targets and this they endeavoured to do despite the heavy enemy defences. “P” Peter seldom returned from raids over Germany with scaring.
