Trained at No. 7 Air Observers School, 14 Operational Training Unit, 1660 Heavy Conversion Unit and No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School. In August 1944 posted to 9 Squadron for operations. In September 1945, posted to 106 Squadron. Served at RAF Bishops Court, RAF Market Harborough, RAF Swinderby, RAF Bardney, RAF Waddington, RAF Metheringham. Aircraft flown were Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster. Bill Shutler flew 29 operations with 9 Squadron (13 day and 14 night bombing, 2 day Cook's Tours) His targets were Munster, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Flushing, Trondheim, Munich, Urft Dam, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Bergen, Leuna, Brux, Bohlen, Altenbeken, Ladbergen, Sassnitz, Harburg, Essen, Dortmund, Arnsberg, Wurzburg, Molbis, Lützkendorf , Prinz Eugen at Swinemünde, Pilsen, Helgoland, Berchtesgaden. With 106 Squadron he flew 8 Operation Dodge to Bari and Pomigliano and 2 Operation Spasms (Berlin). His pilots were Flight Lieutenant Buckley and Flying Officer Anderson. His aircraft was scheduled to fly operations against the Tirpitz but were cancelled due to weather. On 1st January 1945 his aircraft crashed on take-off and was written off. On two operations his aircraft was attacked by Junkers Ju 88 and Focke-Wulf FW 190 aircraft. This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. During this time trained as a flight engineer at No. 4 School of Technical Training. Further training at No. 1 Engine Control and Demonstration Unit, 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit, No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School before an operational posting to 9 Squadron in July 1944. In January 1945 posted with 9 Squadron to India returning to the UK in April 1946. Served at RAF St Athan, RAF Worksop, RAF Winthorpe, RAF Syerston, RAF Bardney, RAF Waddington, RAF Salbani (India), RAF Binbrook, RAF Lindholme. His bombing targets were Joigny-la-Roche, Mont Candon, Bois de Cassan, Trossy, Etaples, Lorient, La Pallice, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Karlsruhe, the Sorpe Dam, Nuremberg, the Tirpitz, Munich, the Urft Dam, Munich, Gdynia, Horten in the Oslo Fjord, Bergen, Brux, Ijmuiden, Sassnitz, Harburg, Arnsberg, Vlotho, Nienburg, Bremen, Pilsen, Helgoland, Berchtesgaden. On the 11th September 1944, his aircraft was ferrying Tallboy bombs to Russia for an operation against the Tirpitz. His aircraft crash landed at Vescover [Veshchevo?] in Russia. The crew returned to the UK on the 12th September after being transferred via a Polikarpov U-2 aircraft via Vladivostok. On 1st March 1946 whilst rehearsing for an air display in India, a vulture flew through the aircraft’s windscreen knocking the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Laws, unconscious. Harrison kept the aircraft flying until the pilot regained consciousness and could take back control, landing safely. This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. An earlier procession of Lancasters had bombed Munich and objectives in Western Germany before daybreak. Early this morning when it was still dark a force of Lancasters of R.A.F. THE death-roll [sic] in the R.A.F. depot explosion near here yesterday is expected to exceed 160. Tonight more than 100 men were estimated to be buried in the ammunition store, from which 23 bodies have been recovered. Thirty-one bodies remain under the wreckage of a plaster works nearby. Rescue parties worked through last night and today, often in extreme difficulties. Many deaths were caused by gas and some of the rescuers could work only for two-minute spells, although equipped with respirators. The casualties include Service men, civilians and Italian collaborators. A village near the scene of the main explosion, and the open country above the depot, today looked as if it had been pattern-bombed. Great craters are everywhere, and the face of the countryside over an area of several square miles has been completely changed. Buried under mud There were two explosions in different parts of the depot. The first was in a gallery which, with the administration buildings above it, was wrecked. The other was at a bomb dump 70ft. underground. Between 50 and 60 men were at work at the site of the first explosion, but some escaped by an air shaft. Mr. Charles Gibbs was one of those unhurt. Man after man he carried to safety on his back, and he gave in only when he collapsed through being gassed; he was himself carried home by R.A.F. men. Blast wrecked a reservoir and an avalanche of mud swept through and over the administration offices. Men are believed to be buried under the mud. At the bomb dump there were at least 75 men at work. Farm disappears Two farms near the dump were among the wrecked buildings. One has practically disappeared into a crater 100 yards deep and 300 yards wide. There is no trace of a farmer and his wife and three farm hands. At intervals throughout today there have been minor explosions, attributed to the bursting of incendiary bombs. A large number of girls and women employed in a filling shed had extraordinary escapes. The building was wrecked and many of the women were blown through the roof. Yet except for minor injuries and scratches none of them was hurt. A woman farmer living over two miles from the scene of the disaster was injured by flying debris. Her garden is filled with the fragments of shattered houses and there is a huge crater, believed to have been caused by blast.
