During this time trained as a flight engineer at No. 4 School of Technical Training. On the 11th September 1944, his aircraft was ferrying Tallboy bombs to Russia for an operation against the Tirpitz. His aircraft crash landed at Vescover [Veshchevo?] in Russia. The crew returned to the UK on the 12th September after being transferred via a Polikarpov U-2 aircraft via Vladivostok. On 1st March 1946 whilst rehearsing for an air display in India, a vulture flew through the aircraft’s windscreen knocking the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Laws, unconscious. Harrison kept the aircraft flying until the pilot regained consciousness and could take back control, landing safely. This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. The recollections of Henry Sturrock of his time flying in the Halifax with No 640 Squadron at RAF Leconfield. He flew his first operation on 12 September 1944 and his last on 2 March 1945, he flew on 35 operations in total. He also recounts his experience in the RAF after his flying career while awaiting demobilisation. There are also crew photographs and a list of the operations that Henry carried out. Description An account of the resource Norman Mackie’s Flying Log Book 2 as a pilot from 29 September 1942 until 12 December 1944. Continued in 29 OTU and 83 Squadron for operations until March 1943 when shot down by a Messerschmidt 110. Baled out at 1500 feet. Captured but escaped. Return to England in January 1944 via Switzerland, Spain and Gibraltar. Posted to Pathfinder Force Navigation Training Unit (PFF NTU) and 1655 Mosquito Training Unit (MTU), thence to 571 Squadron for operations. December 1944 saw a posting to Empire Central Flying School and then 29 OTU where he finished his wartime service. Continued in the RAF until 1957. Bill found he could not land and took 9 attempts. Bill then kicked everyone else out expect the flight engineer and after checking the landing gear went straight back up and made a number of landings to get his nerve back. Completed training at 1662 Conversion Unit and No. 1 Lancaster Finishing School. Posted to 460 Squadron for operations in March 1944. After completing his first tour spent time with flying control for 150 and 170 Squadrons before being posted to No. 1 Glider Pick-up Unit in April 1945 as winch operator. Posted to 194 Squadron in Burma (now Myanmar) in July 1945 as Flight Engineer delivering supplies until the Japanese surrender in August. Served at RAF Blyton, RAF Hemswell, RAF Binbrook, RAF Ibsley, RAF Mingaladon. Aircraft flown were Halifax, Lancaster and Dakota. Carried out 34 Operations with 460 Squadron (16 day and 18 night). His pilots on 460 Squadron operations were Flying Officer Cullen, Flight Lieutenant Roberts and Flying Officer Gundelach. With 194 Squadron he flew 30 day supply operations, sometimes up to three in a day. He flew from Akyab (Sittwe) to Myingyan, Toungoo and Meiktila.
