A LONG AND STEADY PULL DOES IT
CHESHAM AND DISTRICT BEAT THEIR “WINGS” TARGET
AN ALL ROUND EFFORT ENDS A BUSY AND PLEASANT WEEK
Of the three National Savings efforts, Chesham and District people will look back with most pleasure upon the third, the Wings for Victory Week. The greater pleasure will not only be because the target was handsomely exceeded and over £160,000 gathered in when the set target was £150,000. But also because of the enthusiasm shown; the general nature of the contributions, in which the small savers played a large part; and the week of happy events which kept the town and district alive. The thoughtful and complete arrangements made for business and pleasure by the Executive Committee reflects the highest credit upon them; the enthusiasm and generosity of the public reflects credit upon them. Due credit must also be given to the numerous organisations which gave unstinted help, a totality of effort which was needed to make this thing “go,” and included in this should be the various individuals and units of the R.A.F. which gave such valuable help. It is gratifying, in view of the help that the R.A.F. gave, that their Benevolent Fund will benefit by the sum of £500 or more. A happy issue out of all the efforts. Good!

The final total is £163,688 8/10d., which includes a sum of £500 to be invested in the name of the Trustees of the R.A.F. Benevolent Fund. When all expenses have been paid it is anticipated that a further sum will be available for the Benevolent Fund.

A BIG CROWD AND FINE FUN.
The closing event of Wings Week will live in pleasant memory for the fun, the enthusiasm, and the generosity shown. Once more the Park was utilised, and in fine but coldish weather a huge crowd gathered inside and outside the enclosure. The enthusiasm was immense when Mr. F.G. Plummer announced that the target had been “smashed” – £160,000 instead of £150,000. The fun was fast and furious, and it was provided by an R.A.F. Concert Party from Halton, a merry lot of lads, with one lassie, who enabled people to spend a joyous ninety minutes with music, and story, and song, and sketch, and by-play, and patter. Full speed: quick turns: clever business: George Carter at the piano had little rest. Appropriate chorus, “Save Everybody Save.” Wallie Buckland [break] twice appeared with piano–accordion, and set the people singing. A funny sketch guyed “R.A.F. Efficiency,” and was a clever skit. An operatic tenor singer, Joe Gotleib, with a fine voice, sang such delightful things as: “On with the Motley,” “Because,” “You are my heart’s delight,” and “For you alone,” Harry Illingworth and “Crew” put on a very clever double ventriloquial act – he operated two figures effectively, and they sang and talked and acted. Wallie Okin and Henry Howard were an irrepressible pair with gags, stories, sketches, songs, patter, as a pair and singly: the Hyde Park “orator” and the street vendor (blood-oranges!) impersonations by Okin were funny and very skilfully arranged and put across. Diana Maile, the one lady in the company, sang delightfully, and her choice of songs was good: “Lover, come back to me,” “Cashmir Love Song,” “My Hero,” etc. “The Great Gabbo Act” was cleverly worked – the mind reader trick, where the blindfolded performer told what articles supplied by the audience were held up for inspection – it looked all very nice until at the end another man appeared from under the table, a place where he had acted as observer and communicated news to the blindfolded man. Jimmy Cumming as the parson was funny. Conrad Vince not only kept things alive as compere, but also sang well, “When the Sergeant Major’s on Parade.” George Carter, the capable pianist-accompanist, contributed a pianoforte solo.
The R.A.F. – rendered splendid all-round assistance during the week, and it was therefore very gratifying to hear the news put over by Mr. Plummer that a minimum of £500 would go to the R.A.F. Benevolent Fund as a result of the week’s efforts.

He flew a total of 10 night-time and 1 daylight operation (total 11) with 199 Squadron, targets were Stuttgart, Metz, Verviers, Leeuwarden, Eindhoven, Liege, Trier, Krefeld. His pilots on operations were Flying officer Thompson, Flight Lieutenant Lind and Flight Lieutenant Corcut.

An account of the resource
Jack Wakefield’s Royal New Zealand Air Force Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book from 16th May 1940 until 27th July 1944.
Initial training at No. 1 Air Observers School, RNZAF, followed by 5 Operational Training Unit. Posted to 75 (New Zealand) Squadron for operations as an air gunner. June 1941 saw a posting to 23 Operational Training Unit as an air gunner instructor. Further posting to 15 Operational Training Unit in August 1942 and then Ferry Flight.
Second operational posting to 38 Squadron as rear gunner in October 1942 in the Middle East. May 1943 saw a posting to 5 Middle East Torpedo (Training) School before returning to 38 Squadron. Returned to England in August 1943 for posting to 7 Operational Training Unit as an air gunner instructor. Returned to New Zealand in May 1944 to Ground Training School.
Served at RNZAF Ohakea, RAF Aston Down, RAF Feltwell, RAF Pershore, RAF Hampstead Norris, RAF Harwell, RAF Shallufa, RAF Berca (Benghazi), RAF Limavady, RNZAF Delta.
Aircraft flown were Vickers Vincent, Defiant, Blenheim, Wellington, Fairy Gordon, C-47 Dakota, Hudson, Oxford.
He flew 30 night bombing operations with 75 Squadron. Targets included Hamburg, Cologne, Paris, Bremen, Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, Wilhelmshaven, Hannover, Boulogne, Lorient, Kiel, Dusseldorf, Brest, Mannheim. His pilots for these operations were Pilot Officers Pownall, Lockwood, Mathieson, Squadron Leader Widdowson and Sergeant Fotheringham,
With 23 OTU he flew 3 operations to Cologne, Essen and Bremen. He was piloted by Pilot Officer Saunders, Squadron Leader Mansfield and Pilot Officer Munroe.
He flew 27 bombing, mine-laying, shipping strike, anti-submarine convoy escort and offensive reconnaissance operations with 38 Squadron (1 day and 26 night). His targets were in the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea, Tripoli, Candia Harbour in Crete. His pilots were Flight Lieutenant Wiggins, Sergeant Sismey, Sergeant Gaylord, Pilot Officer Moderwell, Flying Officer Green, Flying Officer Collins, Pilot Officer Thompson and Sergeant Sayer.
On 25th October 1942 his aircraft had a forced landing.

Thanks for your letter of Tuesday night which I received on Thursday, and don’t apologise about the delay in your replying when I can quite understand you’ve still got quite a few things to do around and about. I congratulate on putting the “spuds” in right, Bill, but don’t let them pull your leg about it. I can imagine them doing it when they all get together – the female species, I mean – but if they do, you can refer them to me and I’ll personally deal with one for you. I may get more back than I bargain for, but its [sic] worth trying!

where you live, but no doubt you were glad to know it was all a mistake. I’ve been told, too, that I won’t be given leave to get married in the middle of the course, but I’m hoping to be able to work round that

I had a good laugh to myself about Joan and her curls, and I wish I could have seen her! I’d have had her crying if it was at all possible with teasing her!
It seems that your tongue did work overtime to get your working hours cut down, but honestly I don’t blame you in the least. Lots of people have told me you seem to be getting thinner all the time, and I think you will admit [indecipherable word] lost some weight doing a double job, so I’m glad you have got Dr Lambert certificate for that.

Well, Mary, there’s only one point left – about Jim Leavesby, and I must say I didn’t even know he’d gone out East. Still, he’s a prisoner and that’s for the better than being unaccounted for, isn’t it?
The only news I have for you is about exams we’ve had this week They’ve been concerned solely with the Wellington aircraft from the point of view of the pilot, but I’ve

not had any trouble with them. The other day we had to do a blindfold check in the cockpit, going through all the various actions as though actually flying, and today we had a 2 hr paper on pretty well everything connected with flying Wimpy’s. [sic]

I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your husband, Acting Flight Lieutenant Alastair Grant Lang D.F.C., Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on the night of 4th May, 1943, when a Lancaster aircraft in which he was flying as captain set out to bomb Dortmund and was not heard from again. this does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he should be able to communicate with you in due course. Meanwhile enquiries are being made through the International Red Cross Committee, and as soon as any definite news is received you will be at once informed.
If any information regarding your husband is received by you from any source you are requested to be kind enough to communicate it immediately to the Air Ministry.
The Air Council desire me to convey to you their sympathy in your present anxiety.

In November 1943, a letter arrived at May Beckett’s, for forwarding to Sgt G Beckett. Written in blissful ignorance of the fact that he had now been missing for almost a year, the letter, from a girl he had known, is a poignant reminder of what a popular and fun loving young man Geoff was and how life and the war were moving on, without him.

Dear Geoff.
I expect you will be surprised to hear from me after such a long time, but I often wonder how you are getting on these days, so I thought I would write to you. I think it was last Christmas-time when you wrote and wished me a merry Christmas, so I think it’s my turn this year to write to you. Well Geoff, I’m afraid I don’t know where on earth you are stationed now, so I shall send this letter to your home address and hope it will be forwarded on to you.
How is life treating you these days? I think it’s about two years since you were at Wittering, or should I say left Wittering, although it does’nt [sic] seem as long as that!!
How is Peter getting on now? The last I heard was that he was training to be an ‘observer’ in Canada, but I expect he is back in England now, is’nt [sic] he? We all had some very good times together did’nt [sic] we Geoff?
Did you know that Mary is out of the Waaf now? She is keeping house for her dad and brother. Her mother died about 6 months ago, after a very long illness and Mary came out of the Waaf soon after. She has just started back at ‘B and Co’ again, on part – time work in the telephone exchange. I’m still on the same job too.
I often see the McCarthy girl and often Mary and I would like to ask her if she knows how you are, but she looks at us so disdainfully that neither I, or Mary with all her cheek, have ever plucked up the courage to.
You would’nt [sic] find Stamford altered a great deal since you were here. By the way Geoff, have you been here lately? There are’nt [sic] many R.A.F. left at Witt’ now, it all seems to be Yanks and now and again you see a few sailors. (I hope I’m not giving away vital information)

Now and again we go down to the dance at Blackstones on Friday nights, but now we are getting older (!) they don’t seem to bother me as much. Let me see now, you must be nearly 23, getting old Geoff!
Actually, I don’t really know whether I am writing to a married man or not now, because I think you said you were engaged last time you wrote. Anyway, I haven’t put anything bad in this letter, have I?
I don’t think you would recognise either Mary or I now, at least I should say you might recognise us, but I feel much older and sensible now, than in the days when we knew you before. Remember the number of times we used to ring you up when you were on duty – it makes me blush to think of it!
Well Geoff, I think I’ll close now and if you can find the time to drop me a line I would very much like to hear from you.

It is not hard to imagine poor Peggy’s shock and grief, when she read the reply that Geoff’s mother will have sent her, or the sadness with which May herself felt, as she put pen to paper.
The following month, on the 17th December 1943, Sergeant G. Beckett’s Flying Log was officially annotated, ‘Death Presumed’ 17.12.43.
The word ‘MISSING’ had been written against the last target, NIENBURG, this signed by S/Ldr G. Haywood. O.C. ‘B’ Flight and dated 5/6/43.
The final acknowledgement of Geoff’s presumed death was the signature of Wing Commander W.A. Williamson. O.C. 44 Sqdn.
Geoff’s mother May Beckett, did not accept that her son was dead, until her daughters Barbara and Jean, made her face this very unpalatable truth. Geoff was not coming back. They did not know where or how he died, or if he had a known grave. They were not to know until nineteen fortyfive.
