Wed. noon. 1/4/42
My dear Douglas.
I was just starting my letter to you last night when Miss Chester popped in so of course had to postpone it until now. I have just finished my light lunch & when my letter is written must sally forth in search of food. I think I told you in my last letter that my butcher prophesied 8 penny worth per week per head in the near future, in which case it will cost me nearly as much in fare as the price of the meat. But I do go out, [deleted] where [/deleted] [inserted] when [/inserted] I should be pottering about inside, if I were not obliged to collect my meat, & I love the walk through the park. The crocuses were so pretty last week & there was promise of hundreds of daffodils. When we got up this morning it was a beautiful Spring morning with blue sky & grand sunshine. By eleven o clock the rain & sleet were pouring down & [deleted] the [/deleted] now again a bitter wind is blowing a gale. Dad & I were delighted to have 6 letters from you last week dates from Dec. 9. 18. 26. January 2. 6. 9. We were glad to know that in spite of unusual circumstances you were able to make merry at the festive season & I must express a very belated thank you for all your kind wishes for us. It was such a relief to learn that you did get some of the things from the Red X parcels.
[page break]
It is difficult to imagine a [deleted] most [/deleted] [inserted] more [/inserted] despicable action, than stealing food destined for prisoners of War. My cable was rather later this time. I waited in the hope that I may receive the one returned to Laghouat for revision, but I have not got it yet. I wonder if you could “get” the message of my cable. It was the answer to your enquiry. I was afraid you would be very disappointed. As I explained in a previous letter difficulties have been many these past eighteen months but we are hoping for slight improvement now. If only Dad can hang on!! Believe me I am very anxious. It is foolish to worry at all, in present conditions but it seems inevitable. We are looking forward to seeing Uncle & Auntie [deleted] A [/deleted] Una on Friday & will give them your message.
Here is my cabled message in case there is any inaccuracy. “Delighted six letters December nine to January nine. Whitworth Street account eighty one hoping slight improvement Easter greetings all love Hudson”. I thought it rather a coincidence that your [inserted] last [/inserted] letter should tell of an inaccurate cable too. No doubt the foreign language makes difficulties at both ends but we are so thankful for the privilege. Your letter of Jan. 6th had a paper clip attached but nothing clipped. As I have not received the note from Tony (please thank him for me) I wondered if it were in that letter & not allowed through. End of the page again. So Goodbye & happy Easter greetings. All love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.

My dear Douglas.
It is a week ago tonight since I last wrote to you but that does not mean that you are not remembered. Although you are so far away there are times when you feel very near to me & there are so many memories that almost every day brings some special reminder. We have not had any more letters since the last week in March when it was a great joy to us to have six with dates from Dec. 9th to Jan. 9th. It was good to read of your festivities & a great relief to know that they were possible during the extraordinary conditions. It was also good to know that you have enough warm clothing & food. I have felt very anxious about that during the very severe winter. Spring moves forward here in typical English fashion – a day of bright skies & warm sunshine followed by rain & bitter wind. Still the gay procession of English Spring passes on. The crocuses have been a joy but the harsh winds have battered them & many look sad & draggled. But the daffodils nod brave bright heads in the breeze & in about another week I am going to enjoy hundreds of them growing wild in the Park. It is such a pleasure to me to walk through there, but it does not seem to have much appeal to the residents of this small industrial town. They seem to
[page break]
find most pleasure in “brass” with which to buy finery. The girls here are very pretty generally & they compare well with [inserted] girls in [/inserted] the bigger towns for smartness. Uncle & Auntie agree to that too. We had a nice holiday with them in spite of typical Easter [deleted] wh [/deleted] weather. On Saturday night we all went to the Grand Cinema to see Deanna Durbin in the picture “It started with Eve.” Charles Laughton was there in the picture too & it was really enjoyable. Uncle said it was the best Deanna picture he had seen & they both appreciated the fact that we could ride from door to door. Auntie was not too well after Sunday – another of her bilious attacks so we just spent the rest of the time resting. You will imagine that suited Dad very well. He is not a pictures fan. I do hope you understood the cabled message of March 31st. I was delighted to have the reply yesterday dated Laghouat 7th which meant news from you in less than 24 hour. It is a great joy. The postman has just been & there is a letter from Auntie Dorothy to say that Grandad will be pleased to come next Tuesday for two weeks. I told you I had asked him, in my Easter letter didn’t I? The menu will be a bit of a problem, as so many foods are rationed now but we shall manage somehow. I do hope it will be warmer than this morning. We have heavy rain & bitter wind. So now Goodbye love for a day or two. All our love & thoughts are ever with you God keep you always is my constant prayer. Mother & Dad.

Friday p.m. 10/4/42
My dear Douglas.
Dad has just gone out again so here’s my little talk with you. It was only yesterday morning that I wrote my last letter to you but as I did not write at all during Easter I feel I must make up arrears. There is not much news to tell you. I told you yesterday that Grandad is coming on Tuesday to stay with us for two weeks so I hope the weather will improve a little. Today has been better but still a bitter wind makes out-of-doors conditions unpleasant. This evening has been bright & beautiful with the lovely sunset that brings you very near to me. I always wonder if it is like that with you & if circumstances permit you to enjoy it as I do. I am always so happy to have your letters but soon the days begin to drag again as each one passes without news from you. It seems that I shall have to get used to the long delays as the mails, ever since you have been at Laghouat, have been very long delayed. I told you what joy your cable of April 7th brought to us. It is two weeks today since my sad journey to Skipton to attend Mrs Holmes’ funeral & to visit Mr & Mrs Hole & try to cheer & encourage them in their time of great anxiety. There is still no further news of Ted, reported missing in Malaya, but we just keep on praying for his safety & well-being. My correspondence has been
[page break]
very neglected since Christmas. I really must try to wipe off some arrears. I wrote to Mrs Clayton at 7-30 this morning. Last night we had a few minutes broadcast by an officer from an Octu school & I was thinking much about John & wondering if it might be his school.
Did you receive the book that Mrs Clayton said she sent for you? If so will you tell me the title. Mrs Clayton said it was by John Buchan but she could not remember the title. I was excited today to find one tiny pink bud on my apple tree It has looked so dead that I had fears for it’s recovery, but am now more hopeful. I try to picture the country around you in these days of Spring & wonder what the blossoms of lemon & fig & date trees look like. It is easy for me to visualize your courtyard after the rain – with the pools of sand & water. I’m so glad to have read the story of Laghouat. There was a splendid picture of the Barracks which helps me [inserted] to [/inserted] capture a little of the “atmosphere” of your abode. The letter received from Grandad yesterday is stamped with five Victoria halfpenny stamps – three [deleted] black [/deleted] blue & two pinks. They near quite distinct post-marks 1942 & I wonder if in future they might have some financial value. Anyhow I will put them away to your collection. Yes love I have kept every one of your letters since November 10th/39 so there is a good variety of stamps on them too. Now once again the page is used so I must say Goodnight.
All our love & thoughts & prayers are ever with you.
Mother & Dad.
