Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. The position seems to be as follows:- Mother (or Daddy, as it actually is) get £400 a year interest on her provident fund investment, which she understood was tax free. She also has £160 p.a. overseas pay. Out of this £560 she pays £420 to us in allowances (£35 a month) & the rest covers taxes, insurances, rates etc. The snag now in that her investment is [underlined] not [/underlined] tax free, at least it is taxed at source & then she gets it back as rebate months later. SO while she is standing out of [page break] the income tax she only gets £200 from it, & this means that she is about £100 overdrawn. Just at the moment she has been paid her rebate & so is in funds. It seems to me a pretty poor show that she should be regularly overdrawn at the bank while my allowance is piling up in Nat. Sav. Certs. & seems to me that the best thing would be for me to pay the rates & taxes out of the said allowance & the insurance premiums too as far as I can. What do you think about it? Mother was afraid that perhaps she was being charged income tax, in spite of the original assurances to the contrary, because she was now paying rates on Lido & might therefore rank as a [page break] householder in this country, or something of that sort. But the man at Grindlays assured me that she has to pay tax in any case but gets it refunded eventually. Do you think Mother’s hypothesis could be correct? Of course in the end it balances out alright, her income from her investment & overseas pay will cover all her commitments here, but only at the cost of being heavily overdrawn for a large part of the year. Apparently they charge 5% for overdrafts, so its not crushing. Do you think I had better return my allowance to them, or shall I pay the rates out of it? Or what? Of course we can go on as we are, & then she gets a nice little lump sum when she arrives home. Do tell me what I ought to do. Collection concerns Pilot Officer James Douglas Hudson, DFC (755052 Royal Air Force) who joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in June 1939 and trained as an observer. While on route to Malta in August 1940 his Blenheim crashed in Tunisia and he was subsequently interned for two and a half years by Vichy French in Tunisia and Algeria. After being freed he returned to Great Britain and after navigator retraining completed a tour of 30 operations on 100 Squadron. The collection contains letters to and from his parents and from French penfriends while interned in Tunisia and Algeria, newspaper cuttings of various events, logbooks and lists of operations, official documents and photographs. On Aug. 18th I received your letters dated July 14th & 29th & one from E.W.7. dated July 7th. On Aug. 21st one from Ted Hole dated July 27th, & on Aug. 22nd & 23rd yours dated July 18th & 27th in that order, each enclosing two snapshots bringing the total I have been so very pleased to receive to eight. These photos are very good indeed and I am surprised to notice so little change in either of you. Perhaps Mother looks greyer (it may be camera) but that is all I can detect from the snaps. The cable definitely says July 16th 24th & 29th. I have completed one year in Africa and wonder every day just how much longer I am to stay here. Existence never felt to be so futile as it does these days. Inactivity & patience do not necessarily go towards making an ideal life. The former requires very much of the latter & you know my temperament. Thanks to many small things I think we shall emerge sane enough. The first four months proved very unbalancing without any news of you at all, but the present [inserted] exchange of [/inserted] correspondence is encouraging. As I have said before we have books, & we play bridge a lot & some of the company is interesting. The time has arrived when we have practically completed the sorting of the companionable & others. Summer is nearly through & we shall expect a gradual decrease in temperature. August has been a very oppressive month, the worst of the year. I have been pushing the old whiskers again for ten days & cannot decide whether to continue, having existed clean shaven for about ten months it is rather uncomfortable. Several chaps have had their hair cropped to the scalp. A stupid craze to promote a bigger & better growth in later years. I prefer to court premature baldness & enjoy my locks while I have them, & especially now when my front wave is better than ever. Collection concerns Pilot Officer James Douglas Hudson, DFC (755052 Royal Air Force) who joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in June 1939 and trained as an observer. While on route to Malta in August 1940 his Blenheim crashed in Tunisia and he was subsequently interned for two and a half years by Vichy French in Tunisia and Algeria. After being freed he returned to Great Britain and after navigator retraining completed a tour of 30 operations on 100 Squadron. Both are very scarce commodities here & eggs are rationed tho’ we have not quite made out yet what the ration should be. One a week each my neighbours get & we hear of some people who have not had one for 4 weeks. Reverting to the art of jam making. Last evening I gathered rasps from the garden & made 1 1/2 lbs of lovely looking jam. You will imagine how thrilled I am as our ration of jam or marmalade is 2 ozs each per week 1 lb jar a month for 2 people. Don’t think I’m grumbling, love. We really have nothing to grumble about & are very very thankful for very many blessings. We’ve had marvellous summer weather & you know just how much I love the sunshine. Our garden has been a joy & at present there are thousands of rose buds just bursting into bloom. Tomorrow is the anniversary of our wedding day. Collection concerns Flying Officer George Arthur Cook who flew operations as a wireless operator on Hampden with 49 Squadron. Subsequently, retrained as wireless operator mechanic, he completed a further tour on Catalina with 205 Squadron in Ceylon. Collection consists of his flying log book, an oral history interview transcript, photographs and a certificate. The collection was licensed to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Dr Steve Bond and catalogued by Nigel Huckins. This collection was provided, in digital form, by a third-party organisation which used technical specifications and operational protocols that may differ from those used by the IBCC Digital Archive. During this time trained as a wireless operator and air gunner. Initial training at No. 1 Electrical and Wireless School and No. 4 Bombing and Gunnery School. After further training posted to 49 Squadron form operations in January 1941. January 1942 saw a posting to the Staff Flying Pool, Training Wing and then No. 10 Radio School in March 1943. May 1943 was posted to Coastal Operational Training Unit and then 302 Ferry Training Unit in November. Joined 205 Squadron for operations in the Far East. Returned to the UK in August/September 1945. Served at RAF Cranwell, RAF West Freugh, RAF Upper Heyford, RAF Scampton, RAF Cottesmore, RAF Carew Cheriton, RAF Alness, RAF Oban, RAF Koggala. He flew 30 bombing and mine laying operations (3 day, 27 night) with 49 Squadron. His target included Hannover, Homberg, Berlin, Bremen, Brest, Kiel, Mannheim, Cologne, Lorient, Helgoland, Hamburg, Aachen, Frankfurt, Kiel Bay, Karlsruhe, Essen, Brunswick, Duisburg, Wilhelmshaven. His pilots on these operations were Flying Officer Fisher, Pilot Officers Mervin-Jones, Kerridge, Scorer, Pratt, Sergeants Eshelby, Merralls, Flint, Latty, Watt, and Wing Commander Stubbs. He flew 2 night bombing operations when posted to Training Wing to Cologne and Essen piloted by Pilot Officer Glenn. With 205 Squadron he flew 68 operations (19 day, 49 night). These included bombing, anti-ship and anti-submarine sweeps, convoy escort and meteorological flights. These were all in the Indian Ocean. His pilots were Squadron Leaders Melville-Jackson, Beckingsale, Wing Commander McClelland, Flight Lieutenants Hoare, Risk, and Lowden. On the 28th August 1941 we was wounded in the hand by anti-aircraft fire. His plane was attacked by a night-fighter on the night of 1st/2nd June 1942.
