Collection concerns Pilot Officer James Douglas Hudson, DFC (755052 Royal Air Force) who joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in June 1939 and trained as an observer. While on route to Malta in August 1940 his Blenheim crashed in Tunisia and he was subsequently interned for two and a half years by Vichy French in Tunisia and Algeria. After being freed he returned to Great Britain and after navigator retraining completed a tour of 30 operations on 100 Squadron. The collection contains letters to and from his parents and from French penfriends while interned in Tunisia and Algeria, newspaper cuttings of various events, logbooks and lists of operations, official documents and photographs. A further 23 items are in two sub-collections with details of navigator examinations and postcards of Laghouat Algeria.

The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Elizabeth Smith and Yvonne Puncher and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.
Dear Bill and other friends (Ha-Ha).
Many thanks for the parcel of fags and insulting letters. Mr. Hunt has I see at last, left his sick bed and his missive or missile came as a welcome shock in these dreary days of total was. His wonder at the bomb-aiming at public houses would of course be natural. They Nazis know the pubs that sell good beer and leave them up for when the invasion starts. As for Jacks promise to start knocking things off as soon as he gets here, if he doesn’t do it, he’ll be very short of kit. Thank the spotters for returning my photo, I might have known that once a photo fell into their thieving hands I’d lose my hat and tunic and finish up naked. With so many crooks about I wonder you do not start a RAF of your own. This letter coming so soon on the heels of the last has not the war news the others have contained. Here has been a district lull in operations the last few days. The NCO’s are licking their wounds after the big do, and the squads generally are maintaining a defensive

attitude and waiting for the full fury of the onslaught. This week normally is a black time as it is pay week and iron op war gets into your soul until Saturday, when every-thing will again be unk. I will not spoil the next general communique before its time and regale you with slight tit-bits but just thank everybody for their wishes – letters and parcel, and shall send a fuller account when operations again stride forward. Thanks for the enquiry bill, the wife and family are doing alright, the old man is not doing so bad either. Will write shortly and give you first hand information
Thanks a lot.
Pete.
P.S. tell Eddy there is only one pub here due to be knocked down so I shall be perfectly safe, as he will be glad to know.
P.
P.P.S. I’m acting for a corporal this week, he’s stationed at Folkestone, but his wife’s here.
