An account of the resource
Jack Wakefield’s Royal New Zealand Air Force Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book from 16th May 1940 until 27th July 1944.
Initial training at No. 1 Air Observers School, RNZAF, followed by 5 Operational Training Unit. Posted to 75 (New Zealand) Squadron for operations as an air gunner. June 1941 saw a posting to 23 Operational Training Unit as an air gunner instructor. Further posting to 15 Operational Training Unit in August 1942 and then Ferry Flight.
Second operational posting to 38 Squadron as rear gunner in October 1942 in the Middle East. May 1943 saw a posting to 5 Middle East Torpedo (Training) School before returning to 38 Squadron. Returned to England in August 1943 for posting to 7 Operational Training Unit as an air gunner instructor. Returned to New Zealand in May 1944 to Ground Training School.
Served at RNZAF Ohakea, RAF Aston Down, RAF Feltwell, RAF Pershore, RAF Hampstead Norris, RAF Harwell, RAF Shallufa, RAF Berca (Benghazi), RAF Limavady, RNZAF Delta.
Aircraft flown were Vickers Vincent, Defiant, Blenheim, Wellington, Fairy Gordon, C-47 Dakota, Hudson, Oxford.
He flew 30 night bombing operations with 75 Squadron. Targets included Hamburg, Cologne, Paris, Bremen, Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, Wilhelmshaven, Hannover, Boulogne, Lorient, Kiel, Dusseldorf, Brest, Mannheim. His pilots for these operations were Pilot Officers Pownall, Lockwood, Mathieson, Squadron Leader Widdowson and Sergeant Fotheringham,
With 23 OTU he flew 3 operations to Cologne, Essen and Bremen. He was piloted by Pilot Officer Saunders, Squadron Leader Mansfield and Pilot Officer Munroe.
He flew 27 bombing, mine-laying, shipping strike, anti-submarine convoy escort and offensive reconnaissance operations with 38 Squadron (1 day and 26 night). His targets were in the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea, Tripoli, Candia Harbour in Crete. His pilots were Flight Lieutenant Wiggins, Sergeant Sismey, Sergeant Gaylord, Pilot Officer Moderwell, Flying Officer Green, Flying Officer Collins, Pilot Officer Thompson and Sergeant Sayer.
On 25th October 1942 his aircraft had a forced landing.

L Pickford’s Observer’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 17 October 1938 to 17 May 1947, detailing his flying training and operations flown as Wireless Operator/ Air Gunner. He was stationed at RAF Bassingbourn (104 Squadron), RAF West Raynham (101 Squadron), RAF Wyton (139 Squadron), RAF Horsham St Faith (139 Squadron), RAF Betheniville (139 Squadron), RAF Plivot (139 Squadron), RAF Upwood (17 OTU), RAF Gibraltar (139 Squadron), RAF Luqa (139 Squadron), RAF Yatesbury (2 Radio School), RAF Nuneaton (105 OTU), RAF Netheravon (53 Squadron) and RAF Changi (48 Squadron). Aircraft flown in Valentia, Wallace, Wapiti, Blenheim, Anson, Dakota, Dominie, Proctor, Wellington, York and Viking. He flew on one night operation and 47 day operations with 139 Squadron, total 48. Targets were Texel, Schipol, Calais, Soesterberg, Deurne, Caen, Guernsey, Cap Gris Nez, Gilze-Rijen, Ghent, Dunkirk, Zeebrugge, Den Helder, Le Havre, Sylt, Brest, Borkum, Ijmuiden, Leiden, Flakkee, Vlieland, Zandvoort, Algiers, sea sweeps Malta, sea sweep Pantelleria, Sfax, Pantelleria and unspecified. He was shot down on 3 June 1941 in attack on Pantelleria and next entry is November 1944 for flight back to UK. He then flew as a Radio Officer with BOAC and BEA until February 1947 when he re-joined the RAF and flew in transport aircraft in the Far East until 17 May 1947.

12 items. The collection concerns Flying Officer Ernest William Smith DFC (174520, Royal Air Force). It contains three log books and service materials, photographs of aircrew, a letter of appreciation regarding the return to England of a battle damaged aircraft and material associated with the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He completed a tour of operations as a pilot with 12 Squadron from RAF Wickenby and also served with 144 Squadron, 16 Operational Training Unit, and Flying Training School.
The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Lorraine Smith and catalogued by Trevor Hardcastle.

An account of the resource
Pilot’s flying log book for Flight Sergeant Ernest Smith from 11 February 1939 to 31 March 1943, detailing his pilot training and 20 operations with 144 Squadron on the following targets in Belgium, France and Germany: Aachen, Antwerp, Brest, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frisian Islands (Nectarine), Hamburg, Kiel, and Mannheim. He served at RAF Rochester, RAF Ternhill, RAF Upper Heyford, RAF Hemswell, RAF North Luffenham, RAF Babdown and RAF Hixon. Aircraft flown were Tutor, Magister, Anson, Hampden, Hereford, Oxford and Wellington. Includes annotations including 'baled out' and 'crashed' (twice). Another note reads: 'SEP 3rd 1939 WAR DECLARED ON GERMANY'. He was assessed as a pilot 'above the average' several times, and later served as a flying instructor. He records his participation in the first 1000 bomber operation to Cologne whilst serving with 16 Operational Training Unit.

Pilots flying log book for Stephen Dawson, covering the period from 11 June 1939 to 30 March 1942. Detailing his flying training, operations and instructor duties. He was stationed at RAF Southampton, RAF Hastings, RAF Hatfield, RAF Little Rissington, RAF St Athan, RAF Cottesmore, RAF Finningly, RAF Lindholme, RAF Swinderby, RAF Upwood and RAF Swanton Morley. Aircraft flown were, Cadet, Tiger Moth, Anson, Hampden and Oxford. He flew a total of 31 night operations with 50 Squadron. Targets were Düsseldorf, Hannover, Bordeaux, Brest, Berlin, Kiel, Lorient, La Rochelle, Copenhagen, Duisburg, Soest, Cologne, Bremen, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Magdeburg and Frankfurt.
