<text>"The Story of King George and His Minister"
Once upon a time, there was a great king named George. From his small island, he controlled strange peoples and possessed warships and massive armies.
False Propaganda
And this King had a minister called Churchill, who was famous for lying and hypocrisy and for consuming alcohol (whiskey).
And when (the King and his minister) thought that time was smiling upon them, they grew bold and declared war on another peaceful people who had nothing before them but work and diligence.
Norway Dunkirk Greece Crete Island Malaya Singapore
However, this people demonstrated supreme strength, and they slaughtered King George's soldiers, casting them into the deep abysses of the sea.
Then the submarines and aircraft of this mighty people sank most of the ships of this arrogant king, whether they were warships or commercial vessels.
Food supplies on the island began to run dry and decrease until the King and his minister were forced to tighten (the belts of) their wide bellies. This was because food ration cards alone were not enough to quiet the hunger...
To London
In addition to this hardship, a significant number of kings and ministers from other kingdoms arrived, having lost their countries and peoples due to the war, and became guests of King George.
However, they grew tired of this life due to a lack of work and began to bicker among themselves, so King George decided to entertain them by performing a play in which they all participated.
“From Steadfastness to Steadfastness!!”
And thus all the King's guests participated in acting out this play; they crowned their heads with imaginary crowns, sat on alleged thrones, and believed that under their command were massive armies answering their every call.
And while they were thus occupied with their play, two other peoples of great power and might joined the enemies of King George.
Harsh blows began to rain down on the King's soldiers, and they started losing one country after another.
And suddenly, the King and his minister asked their guests to stop their theatrical performance and join them in this fierce war. However, the guests refused to comply with this insulting request.
So King George was forced, while in this critical predicament, to send his minister to his mischievous friend Roosevelt, who lived in the far lands of America.
However, this (man) Roosevelt had declared war, and his opponent's final blows began to descend upon him until he was no longer able to send even a single warship or a single one of his soldiers.
The King and his minister were left with only one means, which was to clothe themselves in the garb of the innocent. They fell to their knees and began chanting spiritual songs day and night.
However, the Almighty Lord knew their hypocrisy and lies, and the woes they brought upon the world."
And so what was bound to happen did happen; Roosevelt plundered all the wealth and lands of King George, leaving him with nothing but his island, and completely ignored his pleas for help.
The King's soldiers returned to their island in a state of extreme exhaustion and hunger from the effects of the blows that fell upon their heads. The King was forced to cease fighting, so he dismissed his minister, intending to lead a life of asceticism and renunciation in this world.
And with that, all the enslaved peoples became free. And here you see them, having breathed a sigh of relief, going to their jobs to earn their daily bread.
Churchill could not bear to see the world at peace, so he fell dead on the ground, and his impure soul departed, heading to hell.

<text>674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. Sub-collections contain family photographs, prisoner of war photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings of events from 1942 to 1945.
He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.

The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Frances Zagni and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.</text>

              <text>Lido Thursday 16th Jan
My own Johnnie, I am most awfully sorry that you have been left for so long without news from me. One long letter I sent in your parcel of socks, cigarettes, tea-cloth, rubber, which was perhaps foolish as parcels always take a bit longer. I posted another this morning in the NS&N (written in pencil I'm afraid) full of questions about the garden, which, as I said over the phone, I should like to have your opinion on by next Tuesday if poss. when the gardener comes again.
[page break]
2.
I hope the earlier letters will turn up, I can't remember them individually but I know I haven't omitted to write for as long as a week ever (nor ever will!).
Tuesday started off badly, first Miss Kerr phoned to say she couldn't come over with my Spencer in the morning, so I had to arrange to get back from town early to suit her this afternoon. Then Mrs Neal phoned to say Bridget said she couldn't come & work here either today or tomorrow but might oblige on Saturday. I'm getting fed up!
However, we went up to town as arranged, first to Grindlay's to fix up about their paying for the pram for Mother, & for them to pay our allowances into Ba's & my banking accounts.
[page break]
3.
That seems to me the simplest plan, since I have already arranged to be able to draw out of my account at Aberystwyth up to £5 a day. Then we went to Liberty's who are having a sale & I got a lovely piece of linen to make into a smock for mornings, a spare to the green shantung one I have just finished. I hope to get this cut out & prepared & will bring it with me to sew up at Aber. (I'm going to have plenty to do up there!) Of course Mrs O'Donovan's promised smocks never turned up, & for mornings I have at present only the one I have made & one borrowed from Ba. Then we had lunch & proceeded to Restcots
[page break]
4.
to get the pram, chose a simple but very elegant one, an Osnath if that conveys anything to you, in navy, cream inside with an extension to take a child up to 3 years lying full length. It is a very nice one, but no means the most expensive but still without purchase tax. It was £10.15.0 & the mattress to fit brings it up to £11.8.6, so it is a very great help indeed if Mother presents us with that. I'm sure she would approve of it. I also got several other things, to wit: a really good quality rug for the pram, blue check one side & camel-hair the other, reduce in sale to 10/6. an eiderdown for the cot,
[page break]
5.
also reduced, for 10/-. It is pink at present & later on I shall doubtless want to recover it to match the nursery, but the main thing is to get a real down quilt while they are still going, & I think 10/- is cheap.
I also got a brush & comb & soap box & powder box, all for 3/6 (they have mickey mouse on them, who is, I suppose, now considered out of date, but I didn't think that mattered awfully much). Then I also got 3 face towels & 2 bath towels, made of very fine gauzy materials, such as a baby is supposed to have.[the purchases above are here reproduced in table form]
[page break]
6.
Then I dashed back home for Miss Kerr who duly appeared with my corset into which I am now severely strapped, & it certainly is a great relief & comfort, & supports me beautifully. I don't think I shall get nearly so tired now, as the weight , instead of coming on the small of the back, is spread about & mostly supported on the hip-bones. All very scientific, but very comforting anyway. That set me back £4, which I paid out of sundries a/c thus taking the whole of January's allocation. However, I have managed to buy all these other oddments for the baby out of housekeeping & my birthday present, so we're not doing too badly.
I'm particularly sorry you haven't had my letter as this means you
[page break]

haven't been able to get any further as regards digs. As I said over the phone, I can if necessary dispose of Jane for 5/- a week down in Gloucestershire to Miss Clift, so she need not be an insuperable difficulty. In a way, it might be the most sensible thing to do, tho' an added expense & of course I should miss her company. I do hope you have booked up at the Maternity Home , or will now do so without more delay. I'm terrified lest they can't take me after all. That would put the lid on everything!
[page break]

I'm quite determined to come up & be with you for as long as possible, I simply must have you to love me & make a fuss of me, so do try to get it all taped as soon as poss. I do realise how difficult it is for you when your time is so fully booked up, but of course I can't help there; things aren't too easy for either of us just now. I'm longing to be able to relax & do nothing but work for the baby & enjoy myself with you. I wonder if I could mug up enough morse to be able to tap it out for you to read – of course it's much more difficult to read so it might be some help. Do tell me what the Maternity Home is like. Is it modern or old, cheerful? Apparently well run? Sunny?
Lots of love to you , darling, Ursula.

My Darling Ursula, I am afraid that this will be a very short note for tonight I am absolutely dead beat. Last night I had to clear out about 20 fires, all of them still burning. It was a foul job for we got covered with fine ash & almost asphyxiated by the fumes of the large dustbin of glowing coals that we accumulated. When it was over & it occupied most of the evening the three of us felt as if we had had a dirty Turkish bath fully clad. I had no respite for I had to retire to my room in order to get all shaving, washing, boot cleaning & button polishing done before I went to bed. This morning I had to get up on the stroke of six, wash hurriedly, fold up my blankets, make my bed in the approved manner, sweep my share of the room, rush down for breakfast & tear up again after it in order to get down to washing out a bath, cleaning 3 lavatories, 2 wash basins & the floors of two rooms devoted to the use of such fixtures. All this had to be done before we started our days work. This included 1 hours drill, 1 hour PT, 2 hours Maths Exam, 1 hour Gas Exam, 1 hour Law & 2 hours Signals. Following all this I have spent over an hour writing up some notes so that by now I am dying to go to bed. The trouble is that most of the fellows in the room kick up a hell of a row by conversing long after the official 'lights out' at 10.30.
My darling, what has happened to you. If I receive a letter tomorrow it will be 5 days after the last. I hope this break in your correspondence doesn't mean bad news. Do try to let me hear from you fairly frequently just now especially. When you come down here you needn't bother to write nearly so often to me, I am longing for you to be here. We are still having perfect weather – such a pity that you are missing it all. I had a letter from Dundee today expressing (inter alia) appreciation of the gifts you sent for Xmas. I'll enclose it, if I remember. Our Maths went off quite smoothly this morning. The papers are sent to the air Ministry Examining Board for marking & we ought to get our results in a week's time. The Gas paper is marked here but I don't know when we shall hear how we fared. I thought it was easy though.
We have no more exams until the end of our course now. Do hurry here to help me to learn all about my subjects. If you give me a date before the week end, I will make an effort to book digs on Sunday. Too tired to keep going any longer dearest – I long for you – All my love, John
Thursday 16/1/41 Dearest Ursula Just a few more lines scribbled in the last few minutes before my 'retiral'!! It was lovely to hear your voice again tonight & to be re-assured about your safety & general well being. My last letter from you came on Saturday, so that even if the next comes tomorrow there will be an interval of 6 days. My apprehension has grown daily & I tried to argue with myself that no news meant good news. I knew however that no news might mean bad news at the present day if by some act of God Lido & its occupants were entirely wiped out. However I was very relieved to hear your cheery voice. My anxiety over you is another sign of how much you mean to me although I would rather not have that sign too often for it is not very pleasant.
I am looking forward terribly to your coming here although I am a little apprehensive about the finding of digs. My circumstances make the job so difficult. However tomorrow is our games afternoon & I might get off an hour or so earlier, depending upon the types of sport allotted. I have two small requests, dear, first is for a spot of cash. 2/6 will do me this time. The second arises from the soreness of my face after shaving, probably as a result of the bitter winds that whistle past us when we have drill & PT on the front. Could you send me a very small quantity of as masculine a type of cream as you can get. I don't want your 'Quickies' or any of Elizabeth Arden's preparations. I told you about today's new experience – PT by moonlight. We paraded at our appointed hour 7.45 & after a roll call we were told to go back & undress for PT. It was still night time with a most brilliant moon thick frost & a keen wind. Did we like the idea! We are not allowed to say 'no' & so we perforce obeyed, but the instructor kept us on the move all the time so that it wasn't so bad.
I am still taking your jellied eels & am feeling quite fit nowadays. My cough has almost gone & except for being so tired in the evenings I am in good form. This new programme is a real sweat, but on the whole I am enjoying the life here – except for the fact that we are separated. Nothing can ever compensate for that deficiency – I wish to Heaven I could see an end to this awful war so that you & I could settle down to a really happy & progressive married life doing what we want to do in our own way & at our own convenience. I have next to no rights now. I am bound to serve in a very rigid manner & get nothing for doing my duty, but a hell of a lot of punishment if I don't. You have to live an awful sort of life, you have no home of your own, when you most want it, are separated from me when I ought to be giving you of my best in the way of loving care & attention & shortly you will provide a new born babe with the most marvellous mother that any child could possibly have & you are compelled to journey into a bleak hilly land whose people speak a foreign tongue & go to Church on Sunday.
I have remembered another want of mine – a bar of soap - at your convenience – no hurry for a day or two. I am to have my first night out on Saturday since I came here I have offered to be a steward at a RAF boxing tournament. My reasons for volunteering are twofold, because it will be a change & because it costs nothing. I have a funny story to tell you about a method of proving the immortality of man but it is too naughty to put into black & white. Remind me about it when you come here & I will think again about the desirability or otherwise of passing it on to you.
I really must stop, my darling, with lots of love – as ever - John
